Sussex Fish Bar in City of London, Westminster

We liked the place. The staff was nice. The fish and chips were hot and delicious. The burgers were also simple and delicious. My husband would have drunk beer, it was brought to him from the place next door, because it is the same owner.

We stayed in 2023 and 2025 because for me it's the best fish & chips I've tried (I've tried some in London and Edinburgh). The quality of the food is excellent, the place is clean, prices are average for London and the staff are friendly. Be careful not to stand near the door if you are cold because it does not close well.

A small restaurant near Paddington station. My 6-year-old son and I had dinner there. Portions were large, food was good. I ate Pie and it was lovely and Greek salad tasted like in Greece. Good atmosphere and the restaurant is run by a family. They serve simple dishes, but the food was good and hot and we were full. Recommended.

The gentleman was attentive, friendly, we are Spanish and with a smile the next day we returned for dinner, he remembered and tried to tell us things in Spanish. Generous and delicious portions. Thanks for the treatment!!!

We went as a group of eight people to the establishment. When we sat down, we informed the gentleman who served us that we wanted to split the bill. He seemed upset by the request and said he could only divide the bill into two. We explained that we were three groups (as we were going to pay with cards from different countries, not cash). He then told us we would need to pay at the till, and we agreed. He wrote down the order in his notebook, and I took the responsibility of explaining which group ordered each meal. However, instead of keeping the orders separate on paper or adding three different orders in his system, he put everything into one single order. When we went to pay, we were treated poorly. He yelled at us and at the employee he called to assist him. He said, "This is why I don’t want to split the bill, because my system is very complicated" (even though we had told him we would pay separately). He also said, "This is not common in the UK" (I have lived in the UK for almost 10 years and have never had an issue splitting the bill). In the end, the food wasn’t good either – it was oily and tasteless. Also, the menu said the fish came with chips and mushy peas, but he didn’t bring the mushy peas. When we asked about this, he only brought four and made a big deal about it, as if he was giving them to us for free! So, it really wasn’t worth the visit.

Parecía molesto por la solicitud y dijo que solo podía dividir el proyecto de ley en dos. Explicamos que éramos tres grupos (ya que íbamos a pagar con tarjetas de diferentes países, no en efectivo). Luego nos dijo que necesitaríamos pagar en la caja, y acordamos. Anotó el pedido en su cuaderno, y yo asumí la responsabilidad de explicar qué grupo había pedido cada comida. Sin embargo, en lugar de mantener las órdenes separadas en papel o agregar tres órdenes diferentes en su sistema, puso todo en una sola orden. Cuando fuimos a pagar, nos trataron mal. Nos gritó a nosotros y al empleado al que llamó para que le asistiera. Él dijo: "Por eso no quiero dividir la factura, porque mi sistema es muy complicado" (aunque le habíamos dicho que pagaríamos por separado). También dijo: "Esto no es común en el Reino Unido" (he vivido en el Reino Unido durante casi 10 años y nunca he tenido un problema para dividir la factura). Al final, la comida tampoco era buena, era aceitosa e insípida. Además, el menú decía que el pescado venía con papas fritas y guisantes tiernos, pero él no traía los guisantes tiernos. Cuando preguntamos sobre esto, solo trajo cuatro e hizo un gran negocio al respecto, ¡como si nos los estuviera dando gratis! Por lo tanto, realmente no valió la pena la visita.

Chips were nice but pie was cold in the middle which was very disappointing.

The man who served me was very friendly, from what I saw his specialty is fish and chips, I ordered a hamburger with fries and Coca-Cola for about 10 pounds, it didn't arrive, and they served me super fast

I recently visited this restaurant and was excited to try the chicken dish listed on the menu. However, when I placed my order, I was informed that it would take 15 minutes to prepare, as it seemed they didn't have it available at the time. I patiently waited for 20 minutes, but it appeared that they may have gone to the KFC across the street to buy the chicken and then served it to me as if it had been freshly made in-house. While I appreciate the overall ambiance and service, I was a bit disappointed that they thought I wouldn't notice the difference. I hope they can improve their menu availability in the future. Thank you!

Live locally and not been for years - will now be a regular. Fish freshly cooked and a great range to choose from - haven’t had Rock for years and it was yummy. Great mushy peas, good chips. Staff lovely and place clean. Did takeaway but will eat in next time.

Very good food, the fish was great, not too much batter which I find great, the chips look a bit bland but theyre as great as the fish. The staff was very friendly and comforting to be around. The ambience was okayish, it felt more like if I was in a hospital rather than a restaurant because of the cold lights and the white tiles. Summary: Exceedengly good food if youre not willing to pay a fortune for some fish n chips. Would visit again 9/10

I visited Sussex Fish Bar on the 14th of October 2024. We arrived at around 1pm for lunch and were greeted and offered a table. We were passed menus and my friends commented that it appeared some of the prices were more expensive to dine in than it was to take away nonetheless we decided to proceed. The place was quiet but clean and the dine in menu had plenty of options. After ordering and receiving our food we tucked in. The food was great with good quality ingredients. Overall we had a very pleasant experience at Sussex Fish bar and if I'm in the area will attend again.

We went there because it was recommended to us by the hotel and I don't regret it at all, quantities of food according to the price of 10, speed and quality of 10 as well and in general a good experience, I recommend it.

We were here this weekend as a family and we wanted to try the typical Fish and Chips. We loved everything, the great price for London, a lot of kindness and the delicious fish and potatoes, oh and a lot of quantity. We were delighted!!

‼️TLDR: Do NOT eat here. Not transparent about pricing, unethical. Sat inside and was not greeted, so we went over to the counter to order. We asked if the price difference (*points to menu above head*) between small/medium/large was for the fish or the chips. We were told that the difference is in‼️BOTH fish AND chips. Our order: Medium fish with a canned drink x2 After we ate and was paying, the total bill quoted was £28+, which to us was ???? When we calculated from the above menu, it only came up to £17.4 💀 LOL that was when we were told there was another menu meant for dine-in with different charges. And yet, we were NOT ❌️ shown the menu at any point of time before/during ordering. It was also now told to us that chips and drinks were charged SEPARATELY 🤡 from the fish. Only after much debate did they agree to charge us for takeaway price. Even then, we were charged EXTRA for the fish hahha go at your own risk 💀 if u notice, the medium fish takeaway charges on receipt is also NOT corresponding to the one stated on 'takeaway' menu above our head Also, did I mention that there was another couple ordering dine-in from the same menu above our heads (they were explicitly pointing at it and ordering) but was not shown the dine-in menu too 🤔

We spent our last evening here and it was great the fish and ships was super good and I was even wrong I had asked for another fish than the traditional fish and ships because I didn't understand from the menu in Brief English, the gentleman immediately sent the plate back and served me a traditional fish and ships and it was really really good. In addition, the server is really very, very nice! I recommend 👍👍

It's a very good place to eat fish&chips. We had fish&chips medium for 10£ with a drink included (per person). The food was very good. The staff was very friendly and the service was quick. It's worth a visit.

The waiters were very helpful in taking our order despite our low level of English. The fish choices are varied and you can choose the size of the fish. If you don't like fish, there are salads or chicken. We enjoyed ourselves and had a great time.

NOT Was around my Hotel corner, looked nice and clean. First of all prices on board/window are some sort of folklore and not the actual/real price. Secondly after paying the real price (13 squid for fish and chips that's it, nothing else) I instantly thought this is not ok for just over the counter food in some more or less dubious food shack, I should have rather gone to a proper pub instead. The food itself precooked, kept warm for God knows how long, no seasoning, fish consisted mainly of breading. Outside seating other people smoked while eating, gave me some sort of hillbilly vibe, not very British at all, no one cares that it is illegal (no, it was not designated for smoking as this would also doesn't make any sense in this set up). Anyways. Overall unpleasant experience, overpriced mediocre food, won´t recommend. Try one the pubs around for a classic fish and chips proper meal with an Ale and get the real deal.

Don’t recommend. - The price on the door £6 for a small one, £10 for a large, BUT in reality they charge £8 and £12 respectively. What is written on the door is just has nothing to do with reality. - The door is open and the delivery man is smoking outside with all the smells inside. - The waiter teased my child pretending he is not going to giving the food and asked my child stupid and non-related questions. The conversation to my child started without my permission. - We waited for the food for ages. - They have canned drinks only. No tea, no juices. - You are supposed to pay at the end, so don’t forget. As you’ve been to the counter at the beginning you are getting a false impression the things are sorted. + But the food itself was good.

Visit mid-February 2024 Fish and chips I always wanted to try when I came to the UK! This store is run by a witty and kind grandfather and a kind young man. The reviews were good, and I visited because it was close to my accommodation. We ordered Cod and Chips, packed them up, and ate them at the hotel! Actually, I bought it to have as a snack after dinner, but I was so full that I ate it after it had cooled down. But when I tried it, I thought, if it tastes this good even when it's cold, how delicious it must be when it's warm. What's disappointing is that the whole time I was eating it, I wanted to dip it in ketchup...😅 But I still remember it and it's a taste I want to eat again🤤

Il pesce veramente buono e abbastanza ‘carico’ rispetto ad altri fish and chips provati che sono risultati più delicati anche nel gusto. Patate di contorno buone ma non eccezionali. Avoid this chippy. Batter was not crispy, chips were soft and mushy... I was headed to a chippy that required a ride in the Tube but got lazy due to transiting for 2+ days and just went across the street from the Stylotel. Easily the worst meal of my entire 1 month RTW trip.

I ordered food worth £46.00 at 20:00. At 21:00 my order had not been received. I called Sussex Fish Bar at 21:00 they said the driver wasn’t here and they don’t know when they’re coming. They told me to call JustEat. There was no contact number for JustEat. My food arrived after 1 hour 45 minutes. This is unacceptable and it was not right for the restaurant to tell me to call JustEat looking for the driver. Fue nuestra primera cena en Londres. Llegamos muy cansados y buscamos un lugar cerca de nuestro hotel. Se ubica a pocas cuadras de la Estación Paddington. Pedimos un pescado acompañado con papas fritas. Nos gustó mucho, estaba espectacular, crujiente y sabroso. Los precios bastante accesibles. La única desventaja es que no sirven bebidas con alcohol, por lo tanto tuvimos que cenar sin poder tomar una copa de vino.
