Travelled over from the south bank for an early dinner, having read glowing reviews, and was extremely disappointed. Food was mediocre at best, and the Pad Thai was probably the worst I've ever had, though I put it down to personal preference. My husband's red thai curry was tasty, though not worth the £19.50 charged when adding rice. The real kicker was the early bird offer clearly advertised on their website is apparently not available on a Saturday, though the offer clearly states that it is. Staff were not willing to honour this despite being shown it on their own website, and our visit falling within the advertised timeframe. Overall a really disappointing experience - we will NOT be back.

We’ve used this takeaway fairly frequently and thought we would try the restaurant expecting a different quality of food. Essentially the food was average no different to the takeaway and quite disappointing. It was an expensive evening as well. The staff could not be faulted, polite, pleasant and helpful.

Always a delicious meal and I love that they have Ramune (Japanese soda) too. Service is excellent, highly recommend this place.

2nd time my partner and I have visited Sumo and both times we have had a very pleasurable experience. The food selection is brilliant - I’m vegetarian and was expecting to have a limited choice but they have multiple options for veggies and vegans; all dishes I’ve tried are very flavourful and delicious, the portions are also sizeable - you definitely get your moneys worth. Service is consistently great and friendly. We came at a very quiet time but it soon filled up, the staff were attentive to everyone and wait times for food/drink were very short. Drinks are quite strong, but very well worth it! Note that there is a 10% tip included in your bill.

We ate at this Hessle venue and had mixed starter, beef bento box and chicken bento box. We had a soda water each. Went early for early bird discount. Place empty. Constant pinging of microwave. My son said lady was poking food in microwave with ungloved hand all the time. Left half the starter. Rice was only just warm. Beef and blackbean flavourless and lukewarm. Left most of food and then realised no early bird 10% discount offered. It was more than £70 for this rubbish.

Oue first baby free date in 6 months had to be here, amazing food as always , such a gem to have this place in Hessle

Nice food, different for the area would come back for this. Pleasent and helpful staff make it enjoyable. Main door has a loud bang when it slams, needs sorting. Off putting and startling. Pointless and terrible 10% tip included. Terrible way of doing things, use opt in not out. Or include service in your prices from the start and get rid of the tip if you are selling it too cheap.

Been here a few times and always impresses me. We went for starters of fish cakes and satay skewers,all very tasty. For mains we had Katsu curry and a pork bento box with a side of skin on chips. Again all very good, good service and atmosphere. So just a couple of annoying things, the skin on chips have changed to McCain oven chips and at £3.50 for around 20 chips I thought was poor,we asked the waitress why have they not given us skin type (only had them 2 weeks ago and they were lovely) but she didn’t know. The bill arrived and the bento box had gone up in price within an hour since we arrived compared to the menu price when we ordered,also an automatic service charge was added,I always tip so this was annoying. Things are more expensive now I know but don’t take advantage by sly add ons onto the bill at the end . Great food but walked out with a bad taste in my mouth from other things.

Food was lovely! Very nice ramen and the starter for 2 was exquisite! The atmosphere was nice and the staff very friendly. Had to wait a bit longer for my cocktail it it was quite busy on a Saturday night.

Went with the family for a Birthday treat. Considering there was 16 of us, staff were amazing, super service. Food was really fresh and tasty just very nice. Have to say a big thankyou to Kaylie the manager for sorting everything for my family, nothing to much trouble. Will definetley be going again.

Always a great variety of food, with something for everyone. On the pricier side for what it is but well worth it for the taste!

Visited tonight for a family birthday meal after lots of recommendations to visit. What a disappointment! Food tasteless and extremely overpriced. We went home and had to order a take away from another establishment. Will not be visiting again. Staff friendly only positive

I have order twice on an delivery app and had my order canceled. Pointless having on the app as either they are closed or your order gets canceled. But will say this whebni acually did get my order it was good food.

This place in Hessle is a must. A little authentic jewel. It was a spare of the moment decision, and what a fabulous choice we picked. I will rave about this place to all my friends. Polite, attentive, fast service, and the food really tickles your taste buds. Delicious 😋 The menu has a variety of starters, mains, sides, and a small selection of deserts. We will be returning to try some more delights 😊

Our first but definitely not our last visit. Service was perfect. Relaxed but still felt like an occasion. We chose from the £10 lunch menu. Both dishes were delicious and portions were generous.

Went tonight for the first time. I have a health condition which means eating out is difficult. However they went out of their way to ensure the food I received was tailored to me. Nothing was too much trouble and the food was amazing. The Manager was so lovely and the Chef even checked what I’d ordered and offered an alternative which was delicious. Will be back!

So I’ve been a big advocate for this place but I have to say after last night…. Sumo is now a no go for me! I ordered my normal, sweet and sour chicken and jasmine rice. First bite, I crunched into something that I thought wasn’t very nice? I then looked and inspected the chucked which was dark grey at best, I then removed a horrible piece of dark bone and some type of cartilage - that was it, enough to put me off my meal. On inspecting the other pieces of chicken I wasn’t very impressed. My partner orders the duck boa bun, there was duck but literally nothing else, no copper spring onion or anything else - they just have ran out. I rang up to complain, the person I spoke to said he’d ring the owner and get back to me - but they didn’t. Plenty more places to try but that’s us done coming here. Unfortunately my experience then put everyone off their food so it all ended up in the bin!

Amazing food, great staff, beautiful place

Lovely food as was when last visited but the menus need updating as the main meals seem to have gone up £4 extra since last time visited as prices are on receipt and when asked if we wanted to pay gratitude we declined but you took it anyway…..a lot more expensive than expected! If I’d of seen the bill I would if queried it as it’s false advertisement.

My partner and I had a fantastic meal at sumo. The manageress was great, she recommended her favourite dishes, which we ordered and we were not disappointed! Great portion sizes, deliciously food and attentive staff. We will definitely be back soon. Thank you sumo!

The staff were as lovely as the food. So glad we heard about this intimate little restaurant. The staff were welcoming and friendly and didn't laugh too much at our pronunciation of some of the dishes. The food was served quickly despite a full restaurant and were very very tasty. Some of the dishes are very generous portions. Would recommend a bento box for a taster.

We visited Saturday lunch time. Firstly, our server was lovely and even though it was her first day, she was able to answer our questions about the menu and make recommendations with regards to the spiciness of the dishes. We had the tofu and vegetables in curry sauce and a portion of egg fried rich which was excellent. The sauce was nice and spicy, the tofu was very well cooked (not everywhere cooks tofu well) and the veggies were crunchy and fresh and the portion size was good. And we had the chicken Bento box which was huge, loads of chicken and all of the dishes in it were also lovely. The service was good, all of the staff were super friendly, the restaurant itself was nice and the meal was good value. There is a fabulous choice for vegetarians and I hope to be working my way through these choices in the future.

The food was delicious, there were 6 of us eating, We started with a cocktail or two (my favourite a pornstar martini). The starters were gorgeous and very big portions. I had the sweet and sour chicken and it was excellent . Would highly recommend

Nice eating environment. Large menu which led me to wonder how much is cooked fresh. Starter of prawns was nice, but two of the three arrived with quite a long pause before the third. Irritating. As the last morsel passed my lips the plates were whisked away. Main courses arrived, again with quite a long pause before the third came, and the waitress started to take orders from another table before bringing our side dishes. Two people finished and I was still eating when the waitress started to clear. I asked her to stop. The food was OK but nothing to write home about and instead of a glossy translucent sauce on my Sweet and Sour it was floury and thick. The bill arrived with a 10% service charge already added bringing it to well over £40 pp with only one drink, two courses. . If they’re going to charge like that they need to train their waiting staff more thoroughly. Won’t be going back.

We eat here today and would like to thank the staff for a great experience. Kayleigh took care of us, and she went above and beyond. She decorated the table as when I booked I mentioned it was for a special occasion. We ordered from the main menu and had 3 courses, the Singapore Chow Mein was brilliant. We will eat here again.

Sumo is a small restaurant in Hessle, we went for a meal with 10 friends for Tom n Tinas birthday and what night. The staff were very welcoming, the food was very authentic, excellent and very tasty. Starters and mains came together and the Manageress Kayleigh was brilliant and really knew her role and with her staff made it a great experience. Defininitely goto eat in or have a take away for great food. Well done to the whole team, will go again

food was 10/10, quickly served and super delicious. ramen was fantastic and a wide range of tasty starters. only issue was the staff was not attentive at all - did not get asked if everything was okay didn’t really get spoken to at all to be honest, and then was slapped with a service charge! dont get me wrong i will almost always tip, but if it isn’t deserve but slapped on the bill it grinds my gears. so requested this to be removed. but service aside as said food was amazing, and the place itself is gorgeous.

Have been twice in the last month with my daughter and her partner and love it. The manageress is very attentive and helpful and goes out of her way to make sure every thing is perfect. we went for New Years Eve and they were very busy and had one or two hiccups but it is to be expected. The food is amazing and presented so well, can't recommend this restaurant highly enough. Really enjoyed it.

Great atmosphere and very well decorated place with such a cool theme. The party I went with thoroughly enjoyed it and the staff are friendly and lovely. The service was quite quick although we went at a busy time so it was quick for the time we went at which was great, and most of the food came out at the same time which was perfect. Although the entrance was quite difficult to find at first but it was a lovely atmosphere.

We normally love their food. But this is the first time I had their king prawn Ramen. Unfortunately, the noodles were undercooked. And the fried squid had too much salt. I wonder if they have got a new chef! Ambience was great as usual.

Food was fantastic and tasty, I have previously had takeaway from their place in Beverley which has always been fantastic. The venue at Hessle is great, however finding the door was a challenge, it could do with a sign to make it look less like a flats door. The choice of meals on the menu was huge and the quality of the salt and pepper squid started and Thai red curry was absolutely fantastic, so tasty and full of flavour. Unfortunately there was a delay before we got our mains with no explanation from staff and in general the fantastic food was let down by the service.

Service was rubbish at dinner... very rude...

First time we've tried the lunchtime £10 menu and it did not disappoint! Fantastic value and same size portions as evening menu! Great cocktails as usual! Will definitely make this a regular lunchtime treat! 👍❤

Very disappointing.. after reading the reviews i was expecting good quality food. After a 2 hr wait the food was not good and the seats were so uncomfortable.. you need to invest in some pads for those awful wooden chairs!. We had pad thai chicken (not good) , katsu chicken curry , chicken sweet and sour (awful) and other starters/ sides and there was nothing i would want again. The drinks/ cocktails and service were also very poor. The restaurant was very cold were we was sat and there was no atmosphere/ music.. wont be back.

For the price I've had much much better we arrived at 7 and received our meal at 9 which was way to long to wait I appreciate it was a Saturday night but still way to long to wait and then they had the audacity to charge a 10% service charge on a £130 bill won't be visiting again

Sumo Pan Asian in Hessle, is a fantastic small restaurant on the main pedestrian thoroughfare in Hessle. Serving a variety of Asian-inspired dishes, it was difficult choosing what to have. The only disappointment was, that the Thai prawn crackers only arrived as we were all finishing our main meal. We’ve been here several times already and the food is fantastic.

I have eaten here a couple of times and also had takeaways and I can not fault any of the food. I lived in London for 15 years and the food is on a par with some of the high end restaurants. Amazing food/staff and delivery service. ALSO PEOPLE MOANING ABOUT 10% SERVICE CHARGE. YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY THIS. I HAVE EATEN AT RESTAURANTS IN AMERICA AND THEY PUT 25% ON SO??

Came with a friend and was met by a lovely warm atmosphere! Staff were friendly, and the food (and cocktails!!) was delicious. Would definitely recommend and most definitely will be returning.

Terrible food and a bad service which they charge you 10% for! The absolute cheek! Our server hadn't a clue on anything on the menu and all the other services where chatting around the corner! ... The phad Thai was burnt I think it was May with yaki sauce but tbh it was sooooo burnt and so gross....and the tofu.... Jesus.... Talk about a slab of greasy shoe leather 🤮

Lovely range of vegan options, we especially love the sweet potato korroke curry, the Korean spicy chips and the edamame spring rolls, but there hasn't been a single thing we haven't enjoyed. We usually takeaway, but we have sat in previously and it has a lovely atmosphere and friendly service staff. Food is always hot, is ready quickly and is consistently delicious. Can't fault them, keep up the brilliant work!

Very poor service . Two couples came in after us and got drinks and food before us. Had to go to the bar 3 times to ask for more drinks and our food. Large table opposite had to ask for menus and they forgot their drinks. And they had the cheek to add nearly £10 service charge Will not go there again !!

Awesome, gratuity charge of 10% is a bit rude though really. I would usually tip, but I didn't when asked and then they just put into card machine without asking. It is optional so please state it! Other then that the food is 1st class.

Service really let the place down. First of all I have to stress that the food was great. We had the salt and pepper squid and satay chicken for starters and they were amazing. The Yaki Udon and Singapore noodles were some of the best Asian food I’ve eaten, can’t fault it! However, the service ruined the experience for us to the point where we won’t be visiting again. Most of the FOH staff were cold and seemed to have attitude and just generally created a hostile environment. Both me and my partner felt uncomfortable for the whole time we were there. We almost left before our mains came out but since the starters were great, the food was probably going to be worth the bad service. When we received food it was pretty much thrown on the table and we felt like we couldn’t ask for things such as drinks, cutlery or napkins (good job we know how to use chopsticks). Even if we did feel comfortable asking we couldn’t get anyones attention despite the restaurant only being half full. Drinks wise, we ordered two cocktails with only one arriving. However, we were quite relieved that the other didn’t arrive as the one that we did receive wasn’t good and tasted nothing like it was meant to. Great beer selection though. Maybe we just caught them at a bad day and it’s not to say all the staff were like this, but overall we really weren’t happy and couldn’t wait to leave.

Nice food but check your Bill! I visited this evening with 2 friends and was greeted by very welcoming members of staff. The food was great but left feeling very disappointed. I had to get the bill changed twice before it reflected correctly.. or so I thought. When ordering drinks we queried the price of the mocktails. The waitress told us that they were 2 for £7. When the bill arrived they had been charged at £6 each. We took this as an error but continued to check the rest of the bill. There were also crackers on there that we ordered, but never received. Both these things we accepted as mistakes and we were happy. At the bottom of the bill there was also a charge of £1.50. We couldn’t figure out where this had come from so questioned it. The waitress then disappeared to find out. It turned out that it was a charge for the extra hoisin sauce I had asked for with my starter. I think this charge is an absolute cheek! £1.50 for a teaspoon of extra hoisin sauce I needed is a joke. To charge customers for extra sauce is a step too far, I actually find it an insult as a customer, especially for one who has visited for years in both Hessle and Beverley. The final point I feel I need to point out is the gratuity that is added onto the bill without been asked. It is automatically applied to the bill which again I do not agree with. It is pressuring customers who wouldn’t feel confident requesting to have it removed from the bill. The initial bill came to nearly £110. By the time it had been checked and edited it was £90! As I’ve already said, I have been a customer for many years, including supporting with takeaways during lockdowns. The fact that, as petty as it sounds, I have been charged for extra sauce and I had to have the bill changed twice has caused me to lose faith in visiting again. I’m sorry to say that I will not be taken advantage of, so will not be dining here again

Real gem of a place. Good selection of cuisine from across the continent. I had pork yaki soba which tasted pretty authentic. Really nice decor and friendly staff too.
