The food and service were great.

Lovely meal on Friday early evening. Very good menu with excellent staff. Great food, reasonably priced. Thoroughly recommend.

Another Halifax restaurant that is only accessible via a steep flight of stairs. However, it is commended by yheir friendly attentive staff. The food was of a very good standard on our visit and reasonably priced. Starters, main course and a drink came in at just over £20 per head. My only downside really was that saucers were provided to eat our poppadoms off of, which seemed rather strange. Overall a very good experience and therefore recommended.

Good food. Fresh and tasty. We had poppadoms and pickles, followed by Sheesh kebab and onion bhajis. Main course was chicken dopiaza and chicken laziz, plain pilau, mushroom pilau and garlic naan. Quick and polite service. Will happily use again.

Rang and ordered my meal.asked how much it would be.he said erm may be £15/£16.so I said a may be no good for me.i will get the manager to call you.i was still waiting 1hour 22mins later.when my food arrived.rang back up.spoke to the "manager " he tried to sat about people being off sick.i work in hospility so I know how it works. He did say what did I want.said nothing from you.i will not be back again.certainly gone down hill since the old owners left

Regular visitors here about every other week, always a warm welcome. The food is excellent served very promptly, the staff are always friendly and courteous. In my opinion it is also value for money. Best curry house in Halifax.

The worst curry that I've ever had and by some distance. Honestly I still can't believe how bad this place was. Creating a curry with zero flavour, spice or taste takes some doing. Then again when looking at other recent reviews it seems to be a house specialty. You could not pay me to eat here again. Completely and utterly dreadful. No wonder it was dead on a Friday night. Maybe at one time it was good but definitely not now. I could have gone to Spoons and had a far better curry. Please, please, please do not eat here unless you don't like any flavour or spice. This was probably the worst meal that I've ever had in my life.

Quite simply unbelievably bad. The worst curry that I have ever had and by a considerable distance. Totally and utterly bland with no flavour or spice whatsoever. I can't remember the last time that I had such a poor meal. I could have gone to Wetherspoons and had a far better curry. I could have randomly picked a jar from a supermarket and made myself a better curry. Do yourself a favour and never eat here I promise that you will regret it.

Shocking… the ‘peshwari’ naan was a naan bread with only sugar on it!! the chicken dansak was just terrible… would not recommend . Avoid..

Visited Halifax for a concert which was memorable, Also memorable was the worst meal I have ever had in a restaurant. Avoid the place.

We were the only people in there and it's easy to see why. One has when we sat down because it was dirty, service was terrible, worst naan I've ever had, decor that hasn't been maintained or updated in about 40 years, unclean, and worst of all they played the same 5 pop songs (intercut with adverts) on repeat over abysmal speakers

Very good service in the Sultan with all the staff being very friendly and polite the food was as allways fantastic.

Visited here just before a gig at the Piece Hall. Food has been going down over the last few months and it was not great. Won’t be back I’m afraid as found somewhere much better 5 mins walk away.

After a great day out with friends we visited on a Monday night , only place we could find open due to Eid . Worst decision ever . Got to be the worst curry I’ve ever had , cheap mince full of fat and gristle . Only managed one spoon full . Didn’t finish starter either . When member of staff asked if everything was ok I told him and he just turned round and walked off

Worst curry ever meat was just grizzly and fatty.told the waiter he wasnt interested at all ....later that evening has the worse stomach upset ever will not frequent the place ever again if I could give no stars it would have been more appropriate

Missed items from the order. We got a refund for the missing items, but the rest of the meal was a little disappointing. Portion sizes were tiny. The chips were nice, but there were only a handful to a portion. There were about 4 small pieces of lamb in one of the curries and the rest was thin and weak sauce. The peshwari naan were basically burned coconut on the thinnest bread possible. Nice inclusion of some poppadoms, but it’s a bit of a hollow gesture when the paid for stuff wasn’t good.

The food was so delicious! I had the lamb Rogan Josh with lemon pilau rice - strongly recommend trying it out :D. Will definitely order again.

Went last weekend with friends order chicken Korma with Pashwari naan the was the great meal ever I had and the staff was friendly we will be back sultan

Firstly, the order was late, we ordered at 19:00 and the order arrived at 20:35. When the order arrived the food was cold and some of the order was missing (however, this was rectified as they brought the rest of the order quickly and gave us some extras to say sorry, which I did appreciate). This place has been getting slowly worse and worse, I’ve been giving them benefit of doubt for good few months now, but enough is enough. Normally amazing. Ordered today and it took 1h 45 to arrive. Ordered Vegetable korma which was cold and filled with mushrooms and nothing else (they have a mushroom option but I don’t order this as I don’t like them). Chicken korma was covered in a layer of oil, all the sauce was separated and again cold. Rice was freezing. Had to microwave everything. Girlfriend introduced me to here when we got together. Beautiful curries, i always get garlic chilli balti. Every now and again theres slight issues. But overall this place has got me into loving curries. My only niggles are, portion sizes could be bigger, I’ve started getting chapattis instead of naans as that pretty much what their naans are anyway but other than that, we order multiple. It’s addictive!

It was a lovely place, friendly helpful staff and the food was excellent! (the rose wine was good as well!) It was very good value as well! We will be going again when we next go to the Victoria theatre. (my only minor complaint was there was no lime pickle with the pickle tray, I would gladly pay extra for this as I am not keen on the other dips) It won't stop us from going back though!

I ordered 3 portions of vegetable samosas all 3 contained meat, not nice when 2 of the 3 people are vegetarians! I’ve always ordered from Sultan Mahal but unfortunately they’ve now lost our business.

sent wrong stuff - I only ordered vegetarian starters but received a meat samosa. also just ordered onion bhajis & mix pakora but got a mix starter, including mushroom pakora (not a fan) and that meat samosa that I def did not want

Superb food as always and delivered quickly and hot.

Awful takeaway. Chicken looked felt and tasted like the pre cooked and sliced chicken you can buy at a supermarket. Sauce watery and tasteless, a madras should have a kick to it, this tasted of nothing!

Disgusting food!! How do they even get away with selling the rubbish that they do? Example, biriyani is just boiled rice mixed up with the curry gravy base and a few pieces of boiled chicken. A child could make better. No taste or flavour. Looks vile. Tastes even worse. People who dine there please don’t waste your money

Went on A Saturday at 6.45pm with 5 friends and it was fairly quiet. Still waiting at 8.45pm for food. No apologies, no explanation just excuses. People were getting up and leaving as no food was being served. All the food was going out as takeaway. Absolutely disgusting. Plus they had the cheek to charge us over £20 for 4 small bottles of lager. They need to shut the restaurant and just concentrate on takeaways. Appalling.

Come on Sultan what's happened to excellent service and good food?tonight was appalling. Two hour wait for poor cold starters ,side salads missing or minus tomatoes etc,prawn biriyani more like shrivelled up shrimps and no sauce to go with it.Two tables walked out while we were there so not us being fussy.

I nipped in here for a quick curry on a Sunday early evening. I had an excellent Butter chicken and the paratha was excellent. I don't recognise the bad reviews, it was excellent service and the meal was lovely. I'll go back.

Paid £8.90 for a house special, kofta. It arrived and was a seekh kebab chopped up inside the sauce and not the usual meatballs. The chips where undercooked, the rice was burnt and had a tainted smell and taste and the poppadoms were soft! Iv been getting curry’s here for almost 9 years now and I can safely say I won’t be coming back again. The curry’s have got progressively worse over the past few months and this was inedible! £30 for something that was most inedible!

One of the most disappointing dining experiences in all of Halifax can be found at this restaurant. We had made a reservation for six people through their website and arrived 10 minutes before our booked time. The receptionist seemed completely disorganized, stating, "we don't know, we have many bookings today." To make matters worse, their very next question was about when we planned to leave. This was quite baffling, as we hadn't even been seated yet. Despite the restaurant being nearly empty, with only three occupied tables, they made us wait for 15 minutes in their tiny reception area, even though we had a toddler with us. The waitstaff displayed rudeness and stubbornness, claiming that we were obstructing their path, which was unavoidable given the small reception area and their unnecessary delay. After this frustrating wait, we were finally seated, only to observe other guests arriving and being seated immediately, without any wait like ours. The most frustrating part came when it was time to pay our bill. They informed us that their card machine was not functioning and insisted we find an ATM nearby for cash. This added more unnecessary inconvenience, especially with a baby in tow. Interestingly, we noticed some British patrons successfully using their cards to settle their bills, leading us to question the inconsistency in their explanations. With numerous dining options available for the weekend, I strongly recommend avoiding this establishment due to their unprofessional and discourteous service.

Pakoras were dry and mixed with huge pieces of potato, the jalfrezi had no taste, naan was dry, mushroom rice was pilau with a sliced mushroom on top, usually so good but this one went in the bin

I used to live in Halifax and on a rare visit back decided to take my wife for the Sultan Muhal experience I remembered from years past, good food, excellent service and a pleasant experience. After tonight's visit I'm probably heading for a divorce. What has happened to the place? The pickle tray was disgusting, which should have been my first clue things had changed and not for the better, we should have walked then. We were starving though and things couldn't get worse, could they? How wrong was I The onion bhajis were both undercooked and burnt, quite a feat and consequently inedible. The chicken was possibly not chicken, my best guess some form of road kill scooped up earlier in the day and drowned in oil. Consequently inedible. The rice, I suspect chef has forgotten to remove the plastic covering before popping it in the microwave. Consequently inedible. The whole place looked like it needed a deep clean, especially the grease covered menus. We daren't visit the toilets as by this point we just wanted to escape via the restaurant's best feature, the exit door. Something has gone seriously wrong here, the owners either can't or don't care about their responsibility to provide a clean environment and safe, edible food to the public. Needless to say we'll not be back and unless things drastically improve this business will cease trading very soon. What a shame it used to be so good.

Lovely curry nice staff but the bottled beer was not cold. Decent prices also. A bit quiet but 8 pm on a Sunday probably explained it.
