Excellent! Absolutely faultless. The concept of teaching a trade and skill to category D prisoners makes so much sense. Prisoners are taught the skills required to prepare, cook and serve good food restaurant style.Everyone we came into contact with was extremely polite and friendly. The restaurant is clean and spacious. We booked in advance. This meant that your table was laid with table cloths and cutlery in advance. There was a good choice of food at an extremely reasonable price.£6.00 for a main course. We were a party of 4. Two of us had beef and onion pie.1 had chicken curry .1 had quiche and salad. We had cooked deserts. Really good sized portions. Followed by tea and coffee. For the 4 of us the total bill was £46.00! Open Monday to Friday. Also there is a plant shop next door that sells plants grown in the prison gardens. All plants are in a good condition. The staff working here are very keen that visitors return. We will certainly do so and will encourage others to do so. Brilliant work everyone does here.

Excellent value for money, great service and the most delicious food. Would recommend, kids loved it. The homemade cakes were so good!

I took my Triumph Street Triple 675R out on Monday for a 100 mile round trip for lunch with an old biking buddy (he’s now 79) and he turned up on his Triumph Thruxton. Beautiful machine. But to get to the point, lunch was at the Secret Diner attached to Sudbury open prison and, I'm told, run by trustees. Nice lads cooking and serving, great food and the bill for mains, puddings and drinks came to just under £20 for the pair of us! Love a bargain.

Another fabulous visit that never disappoints. Very good service from very friendly staff and lovely food that's just excellent value for money.

I have been here several times in the past but for some unknown reason it was terrible,no bacon,no sausage,no ham ,the toasted sandwich was very poor tere did not seem to care about the food , whether it because they was having a lot of work at the prison.

Great little find at Sudbury prison. Good food at excellent prices and great service. There was a choice of 5 main courses priced at £5 then lots of sandwiches, baked potatoes, omelettes etc as well. I think it's only open 11:30 - 1:30 Monday to Friday.

A great place for food at a sensational price. It is a great program at the prison and is very well run. Very attentive staff who are all friendly and well mannered. Would I go again you bet I would.

Visited here with my brother as he lives local. Was very impressed at this program at the prison for the inmates and I applaud it. We had lunch there which was nice food but not quite hot enough for me. Was served by an inmate, don’t really like using this term but I suppose it is the right one, who was very polite. The prices were very good. Went next door to the garden centre and of course we bought some plants at a very reasonable price. The two gentlemen who run it also inmates I suppose were very knowledgeable about the plants and very helpful. I must say though that if I did live local I would frequent this place more often. The prison has to commend itself for this program and getting these people back into society. Brilliant

We came across this diner whilst travelling with our caravan. What a find! The venue, food, staff and atmosphere were all excellent as were the portions and the price. Cooking and service was undertaken by supervised prisoners who excelled in both the cooking and presentation of the meals. What a wonderful way of providing a purpose and rehabilitation. We visited the Garden Centre too. First class.

Been trying to visit for 3 years, but due to pandemic couldn't. Finally got there this week, and I have to say it was worth the wait. Food hot, freshly cooked and rasty. Not an extensive menu, but definitely enough. Service is good. Nothing is too much trouble. Don't let this restaurants location put you off.

After meaning to visit for years I eventually made it and was very impressed. The service was second to none. There was a good choice of food at very reasonable prices. I had panini, salad and chips at £3.50 served on a wooden platter, I couldn't fault it. There is a range of cooked meals and a menu of light bites. The venue gets very busy due to its fab reputation and very reasonable prices. Toilets were modern and very clean. The staff took such pride in their work and have obviously been trained to a high standard. The chef comes round and asks if you're enjoying your food. He explained how he is gaining his NVQs in catering. I will certainly will be returning. Make sure you visit their garden centre next door. Equally fab value and a great project too.

Sudbury's Secret Diner is a real gem. It is just outside the gate of Sudbury Prison and is run by a team that includes prison staff and their charges. We arrived to a warm welcome and were seated very quickly at our reserved table. Straight away, warm rolls arrived quickly followed by starters. I had mushroon soup which was excellent. Thick with a spicy accent.As an old traditionalist, my Christmas dinner has to involve turkey. Although my wife easnt wild about the brussels, I loved them. The veg was all well cooked, the turkey melted in my mouth. Around our table, we also had pork and Sea Basx, both of which were reportedly as good as my turkey.On to pudding. Of course i had Christmas pud. Very tasty with lashings of sauce -brandy, i think. Home made mince pies and cofee finished a wonderful meal.The venue was busy and that made it rather noisy.For me, the standout part of our experience was the fantastically high quality of the service. I would put the service on a par with almost any establishment in the centre of Nottingham.It was a 50 mile round trip for us to get together with family, but the service and the meal made it well woth while.I'm only sorry I didn't get a photo to share with this.

Visited for the first time today, lovely freshly made food and a good price. Had the vegetable lasagna and chips, couldn’t fault it. Staff friendly and attentive. Defo recommend.

Came here today with friends and we all enjoyed the food, we had beef and potato pie and friends had macaroni cheese, all with vegetables and choice of potatoes. Pastry on the pie was delicious, not too thick with plenty of filling. We were even tempted into a pudding which was lovely. Prices were very good and all the staff went out of their way to help us as we hadn't been there before. Visited the shop next door and viewed all the slate pictures, very impressive, and the bird boxes etc, will look at the plants on a dry day next time. We shall definitely visit again and bring others with us. It's good to see an enterprise like this which may help prisoners get a job on their release.

What a hidden gem this place is: great food and great value. The staff are very friendly and helpful. What more could anyone ask for? We’ll definitely visit here again.

Meal for two on the mid week menu, very good value for money, staff very attentative and friendly, food lovely again and we will be back for more, can't understand why we haven't been here before.

I have visited the secret diner a few times with the cycling chaps for a coffee and a snack. The good lady heard about our secret visits and insisted I take her for lunch. It was the first time that I had been for lunch and was not disappointed. Don't expect a romantic setting with a la carte menu, what you get is a good value meal in pleasant surroundings. I was tempted with the Chicken and Broccoli Pie, my partner had the roast pork. Both meals were good and they even tempted me with a crumble desert. Together with a coffee and a diet coke the bill came to just over £12. Excellent value. And full credit to to polite and courteous staff.

The outside of the building is unprepossessing - looks a bit like a postwar 'temporary' school canteen - though the outside was tidy and,.once inside, the warmth and bustle indicates that there is something special about this place. When we visited around lunchtime, it was very busy (usually a good sign); There was quite a large group at one table, but our small group was greeted warmly despite the pressures and we were soon choosing our meal. Given the size of the enterprise. the range of choice was very good and the names given to various dishes, indicated the individual approach being given to some standard menu items. We thoroughly enjoyed our food and the unusual ambiance. Well worth a visit.

Met friends for lunch, and really pleasantly suprised, lovely location, nice place and friendly staff. Food was very, very good, great choice and served beautifully, will certainly return.

Arrived to meet family members for lunch here. Before going into the diner we bought some flowers and a bird box from the shop. The food was delicious. Nothing extravagant but that’s the best thing about it. Simple hearty grub cooked by the prisoners who are doing catering qualifications. The prices are very cheap too. The prison staff are very kind and attentive. They even pulled out the stops to cook some brunches which had stopped being served earlier on. We left very full, very satisfied and not out of pocket. I highly recommend this place and will be visiting again soon.

Went with some friends after being recommended to this gem of a place. From our arrival and greeting, everyone we met was both polite and courteous, and very welcoming. The starter and pudding were served to us at our table, and the main course we went to the server. There was a choice of main dishes, with either / or veg. salad or rice. The whole meal was very tasteful, well cooked & big portions! We had coffee afterwards before going into the garden & craft shop. We all thoroughly enjoyed our visit and meal here and will certainly go again. But do note the restaurant is only open from 11.30-13.00.

Went for lunch after visiting the secret garden to pick up some bargain plants. Very welcoming greeting and a lovely friendly atmosphere. The food was top notch and such a reasonable price. The service is excellent without being obtrusive. We took a guest who remarked that had she not been aware that she was in a prison she would never have known.

First visit today with friends. We arrived around 11:45 and were welcomed in where we were told of the dining choices available then showed to a table.

First the good bit. We arrived around 12.00 and, being made very welcome by the staff, we were showed to our table. The starter & sweet were served to us at our table but, the main course you get yourself. Throughout our visit the staff could not have been more polite or helpful; they seemed eager to please at all time. Whilst the ambience was welcoming & clean, the furnishings were those of a typical canteen without any of the frills (possibly to be expected as this is, after all, a prison).

Our group of 39 folks from the Eastwood Memory Cafe went along to the Secret Diner today. We were very warmly welcomed on arrival and received the very best of service with quality food, extremely good value and enormous portions! We are looking to have our Christmas party here as we were so impressed. After lunch we then moved onto the garden and shop area, brilliant! An amazing initiative, well done to all involved, can't wait to return!

Lunched out here for the first time with friends who had been before and highly recommended it.Wow!! What a find.We had a lovely lunch in a lovely restaurant with a great friendly atmosphere.The food was lovely and very reasonably priced and it was served by very polite and helpful staff.Added bonus was the garden centre next door.Will very definitely be visiting both the restaurant and the garden centre again.

My mother has been coming here for quite awhile bringing family and friends and this time it was my turn to experience this unusual diner.

The secret diner at Sudbury prison is a real ‘secret ‘ gem. Get there early though as favourites sell out quickly. The staff were very helpful and it is fantastic value for money. 3 courses and coffee for under a tenner.

This diner is on the edge of Sudbury open prison and is run by the establishment, and manned by prisoners. It is clean and welcoming and the food was lovely and the staff were polite.

The Vernon Arms being closed, hopefully temporarily, we looked for lunch at the other worthy contender on Trio Advisor before visiting the Hall. We ate well for £18: mains, hearty hot puddings and a good cup of tea. Plus, I had the mushroom soup to start which got nearly top marks for taste and authenticity from this self proclaimed connoisseur.

We were recommended by friends to visit the Secret Diner. We were so impressed the first time we went again a week later. Friendly efficient staff and the food was well cooked,tasty and excellent value for money.

Cold Sunday morning car drive, we came across this place. It was quiet. We were met with the most polite young lad and an eager cook to tell us what he can cook us. Food was absolutely fine. Poached egg on toast x2. I can't speak highly enough of the attitude and persona of the two lads working this morning. You both made this visit exceptional. WELL DONE.

Went with friends today for the xmas lunch, it was well worth the money 3 course coffee& mince pies after all for £12. The people that work there where very pleasant nothing was too much trouble.Really enjoyed it.

We called here after being told about it by some locals and were very pleased we did. The place was busy but we found a table easily and thought the atmosphere was quite pleasant. The meals were very good value for money and very generous portions. The staff were all very helpful and polite but some could do with being a bit more tidily dressed. All in all, a very pleasant experience.

food and value for money always gets top marks, the cafe is always very clean. i'm sure when i first started to use the secret Diner there was a dress code, everyone used to wear white and looked smart, today it just seemed like a free for all, wearing anything they wanted which just did not look right. hence only the 4 stars rating.

They have great service, menu choices, and portions (maybe too large). I had shepherds pie, and cherry pie with cream. (5GBP)

Although there is a great choice of daily specials - the Burger and Chips are to die for. Massive credit to the staff and inmates for the quality of food and service - an inspiration to us all. Keep up the good work guys

found this place by chance, now i keep going back every week, 50 mile round trip for me by bike, great service great prices. you got to try the Breakfast or the Panini Plater. Costa coffee only £1

Really enjoyed my meal here, love the mixture of self service and table service. Helped myself to the generous sides on offer. All staff very friendly and helpful, they couldn't do enough. Would definitely come back & bring my family next time.

A group of friends enjoyed an excellent lunch, with good service. Very reasonably priced. Our only complaint was that we had to eat rather early, and the portions were huge, but those are very minor criticisms.

One star speaks for itself... so disappointing after reading the rave reviews. My friend thought it was just an off day and will try again. But I won't be going with her. Sorry.

I visited the "Officers' Mess" in April this year with friends. It was brilliant. Very impressed with the attitude of the staff.

I joined friends for Christmas Lunch. Starter of smoked salmon was very good. Main course of Turkey Dinner was very good value , the Veg. was cooked to perfection. Desserts Christmas Pudd. very good, Sherry Trifle excellent and a very good selection of cheese on cheese board. Only criticism - pastry on mince pies, this was not short at all, needs to be reviewed. In addition the service was brilliant, the guys were very attentive.

Yet again15 of us had a fantastic Lunch at Sudbury Secret Diner - Great Value for Christmas Dinner - beautifully presented excellent food and so well served and looked after. 15 of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Well done all of you Fantastic.

Helpful staff, great selection of well cooked food, nothing too much trouble. Inexpensive, 3 courses and coffee for under £10. Can't fault the restaurant, only downside is the limited parking.

I had heard this was worth a visit, so......we found a clean dining room, fairly limited menu BUT really excellent quality. The parsnip soup was the best I ever had. Main course I had vegetable samosa with Bombay potato. Excellent!! With generous portions we struggled with the sweet - but were so glad we did. The coffee and walnut sponge was superb.When it came time to pay, we had to do a double take.....we had heard it was good value but it cost less than half what we would have considered to be fantastic value.My only complaint was that I overindulged and spent the afternoon dozing!! Well done to everyone involved in the project and thank you.I've rated this as cheap eats but don't think it's a snack or fast food joint - proper meals using proper fresh ingredients at extremely cheap prices.

This was our first visit to the secret diner although we had heard good reports about it. 3 of us went. Dining room was spotless and beautifully relaxing. We had 1 fish and chips, 1 sweet chilli chicken wrap ( which was gorgeous) and 1 pizza. We had to stop them putting too many chips on our plates. Food was piping hot and delicious and service was good. The pudding were also excellent with generous portions. The restaurant manager was justifiably proud of all of the staff. The only suggestion I would make would be to discourage staff from clearing plates until all the party finished eating but the young man who waited our table seemed very new and nervous. He did an excellent job though. Just needs to relax a bit. It was refreshing to see how well trained everyone was and hopefully they will get good careers out of it when they leave the prison. Thank you for a lovely lunch. Oh and around £15 including squash was excellent

Visited Sudbury best kept secret canteen today. It's basic cooking in a no frills eating hall the prison staff eat here It gives a choice of 2 starters 3 mains and a large selection of sweets. The main dishes are served from a servery and the vegetables are self service giving you the opportunity to take what you won't The portions are man size. So are the pudding this is a cheep and cheerful place to eat two mains and two sweets cost less then ten pounds. But the staff who serve need to be made aware that eating food should not be done even though they had plastic gloves on at serving points. Other wise a O/K visit

Wonderful food and fantastic service. Blossom on the trees and a sunny day in May. I had the leek and potato soup, pork Normandy and a chocolate and orange sponge with ice cream. The food was superb and the people were so kind and gracious. I would heartily recommend this place. We were a group of fifteen and everyone was given great customer service. These chefs are really talented. The table was set out beautifully for us. Loved it. Thank you so much!

This is Sudbury's best kept secret. Apparently. I don't think it's exactly a secret when bus loads of folk arrive daily to eat here. The food is reasonable for a really reasonable price. Under £4 for a hot meal? Don't mind if I do. Thing to remember is most of the lads here are training & gaining qualifications, so this is like a training diner, if you will. Be polite & patient & they will bend over backwards to please. Cash only, but meals (omelettes, sandwiches, pano is, burgers etc) can be made to order if you can wait otherwise chose from a few on the hot plate. I highly suggest the cheese cake - it's the best I've ever tasted!Parking can be difficult when busy as the few spaces fill up fast & the people start parking on the driveway causing chaos. Well worth a visit.

Good food, good price, good atmosphere and lovely staff. All went out of their way to make sure our visit was a good one. If you want nicely cooked food at value prices instead of fancy overpriced food then this is the place to go.

If you want good old fashioned scoff in a pleasant canteen at VERY REASONABLE PRICES this is the place for you. A choice of four main dishes, a variety of good old fashioned puddings, veg and salad and generous helpings, and it will set you back less than five quid. No alcohol (it is a prison after all) but they do make good coffee. If you need to wash this all down a jug of juice costs 20p. Best get there early, when it's gone it's gone but they will always rustle something up[ for you. And you do get a bit of satisfaction from helping Her Majesty's involuntary guests at HM Prison Sudbury.

Another visit to the Secret Diner and once again Adrian and his staff produced a superb meal, beautifully cooked with lots of choice at a cost everyone can afford.Thank you lads keep up the good work it really is appreciated. We'll be back.

Our Group have been 4 times recently and always had an excellent meal - the recent Christmas dinner- superb and what good value! Our ladies range from 70-100 and we are looked after so well by everyone - certainly a place we would recommend to all and well worth a visit.

We were very impressed with the food quality and price. I had cod moray which was beautiful! My husband had a double burger with chips & salad and our little one had cauliflower cheese. All of the meals were delicious and for under £10 for three meals we would thoughroughly recommend it!

I was planning to go out with my friend as they were visiting me, someone told me about Navaa but I was worried about if we needed to book a table. We went there and without booking a table they welcomed us which made me happy! there service was amazing and there food was delicious especially the Nepalese dish and the staff r really generous. After moffered us a complementary liquor and this was really rare as other Resturants don't do this offer

After reading all of the Tripadvisor reviews on this place I was really excited to try it. After driving 1 hour each way for the "experience," I have to say I was hugely disappointed. Based on the reviews, I was expecting table service, wait-staff and high calibre food. Instead I got food and service which can be found at any superstore cafeteria in the country. £6.20 for 3 courses sounds like an amazing deal, but I can assure you that you get what you pay for. The carrot & coriander soup was excellent. However, the orange tarragon chicken didn't taste like orange or tarragon and there was hardly any meat on the bone. My "accompaniments" were rice or chips and 2 kinds of vegetables boiled beyond recognition. The ketchup was a light pink colour - it looked like sweet & sour sauce but tasted ok. I was excited to try one of the eleven desserts, but my apple & blackberry crumble had about 1 inch of crumble and so little fruit I actually had to double check that they had brought me the correct item. There were no napkins to be found anywhere and while some tables had water on them, we had no idea how to get some. I totally support what Sudbury prison is trying to do, just make sure your expectations are in line. The place was packed with a busload full of seniors, so maybe I am not part of the diner's target demographic.

brilliant service i visited with the local stroke club as most members was unable to go to the servery they was happy to serve us at the table very polite and helpful will be visiting again very good value for money

Visited this restaurent with a coach party from the over 60s club in my area well we had a excellent 3 coarse meal and a brilliant cup of Coffee which is hard to find these days I was so amazed at the food considering it only costed less than £6.00 the service was excellent and the staff were very helpfull and polite and everything was so well arranged I shall definatly be going back ther to eat the next chance I get

My wife and I heard about the Secret Diner from a friend and we have been promising to call in for some food for ages, today was the day! There was actually 3 of us and we had a main course each and two cups of coffee which cost the princely sum of £11ish. The choice of food is quite extensive although there is a choice of 4 main course but other items such as jacket potatoes and burgers are readily available. The quality is very good and the diner is extensive and I would imagine would seat around a hundred. It is very conveniently placed very close to the village of Sudbury and Sudbury Hall, a National Trust property with the excellent museum of childhood. It is well worth trying and I'm sure will not disappoint. I'm sure coach parties would be welcome, by prior arrangement, too.

Ate at this restaurant yesterday and had the special burger - Wow - the presentation of this meal is fantastic. It is a credit to the artistic flair of the teacher.Just to explain, I believe the restaurant is part of the education dept. and is run as a teaching facility.

Absolutely amazed at this little gem.Halfway between my friend and myself and just stunned.£9.20 for 2 x chicken stir fry, 2 x tea, a Latte and fruit crumble and custard and to be fair, it was stunning.Hot and tasty food, served with patience and a smile.Really really impressed and will be going back, especially after having a few car issues before leaving and being offered by numerous people who worked in the cafe if they could help.Pleasantly surprised with normal misconceptions expected and totally destroyed.Will be returning .

its the sort of meal you would have got years ago. No fancy fripperies. Just good basic food. Tasty and fresh. I don't know if the produce is grown on the premises but the pork we had was fabulous! Loads of crackling. Every bit of the meal was served with a smile and a bit of a chat. Really refreshing. You have to have a pudding as they have a great selection of old school puds.

I am told that some people abscond from Sudbury Open Prison. I am thinking of absconding IN the food is that good ! 24 of us turned up for our Cycling Christmas Lunch. Service was excellent , great choice of menu, very generous helpings. Despite having last minute changes to number of diners and their preferences, this was just met with a friendly smile. And the value for money is outstanding. I wanted to award this place just 1 star to deter others from going and packing the place out leaving no room for us, but honesty prevailed. And if you don't fancy 3 courses, then there is a wide range of offerings from a sandwich or piece of cake upwards.

We went on recommendation and what a good call. Two main meals and two puddings, all for £9.60! Well cooked and tasty. A very popular diner, so go early. We will be back.

Something different just off the A50 easy parking next to the "hut", no need to book as loads of tables but you need to get there 12- 12.30 ideally for best choice. friendly helpful staff.4 mains , 2 cans of pop and a delicious home made crumble and custard for a touch over £15 !!!!No frills but tasty superb value food

A very inexpensive lunch - excellent portions - friendly staff. An excellent training facility, Adrian the Tutor ensures that standards are maintained. An excellent place for lunch if your on a budget, but fancy a meal out. 3 courses for around a Fiver.

Most enjoyable experience. The food was very good and there was plenty of it. The staff were very pleasant and polite and the restaurant itself was very clean, light and airy. We will definitely make a return visit. It makes you wonder how they make a profit at the prices they charge. All in all one of the best restaurant meals I have had in a long time.

The clue is in the restaurant's title. The restaurant is a training facility within H.M. Prison, Sudbury, situated between Ashbourne, Derby & Burton Upon Trent.Selected inmates are supervised and trained by Mr Adrian Hill in the craft of food preparation and engaging with customers. A trained chef himself, Adrian ensures that customers experience very high quality cooking for a range of 'homely' dishes.What sets this little gem apart is the amazingly low prices which appear to just cover the cost of ingredients. The ambiance is, of course, a little different as the restaurant is a large Nissan-type hut within the prison grounds but, don't let this put you off as the interior is more than pleasant. At around £5 for a three course meal of a very high standard, how can one go wrong?Customer parking is right outside the restaurant which is open for lunchtime only. Bookings may be taken which may be advisable for large parties.In summary, lovely, fresh, wholesome food at a fraction of the cost of a burger joint.
