We've just moved to Yarm and on our first visit, of what will now be many, we had a great experience. Toasties, one with chicken and avocado and one with brie and cranberry and a toddler nibble plate! Delicious

We visited the cafe having purchased some cards in the main shop. It had been years since we had been to the cafe so thought we’d give it a try. The location itself looks nice; the seats we had were quite comfortable and it was reasonably busy. We ordered 2 bacon sandwiches, an americano and a Diet Coke, which came to about £25 - extortionate prices to say the least. The bacon sandwiches were average - bacon that had a thick bit of white fat rather than being nice and crispy. The sandwiches came with butter on the side, which meant we had to butter the bread ourselves; I’ve never seen that done before in any other cafe. There are lots of other nice places to eat around Yarm, so I’d probably recommend going elsewhere instead

Gorgeous cup of latte and melt in the mouth Banana Bread, which had much more flavour than anticipated. Twix Tiffin was also lovely. Friendly staff, and of course a fab shop to mooch around.

Visited Yarm last week with my Elderly mother we visited this cafe they were understaffed and very busy,The prices are through the roof! It put us off ordering any food ,the food portions are quite small and we were shocked at the expensive prices. We only had a latte each and that cost £8.77 ! Highway robbery! Won't visit again.Yarm itself is quite nice though and later we visited Cafe Nero there and that is Vastly better!

Found this place by chance having looked around the adjoining shops. The welcome was warm and genuine, the staff full of smiles, made us feel as ease straight away. We only called for a quick coffee (great quality coffee!) but couldn’t resist a scone and chocolate traybake, both were delicious. Without a doubt, next time we’re in the area this will be a first stop, blackboard specials sounded great, plus plenty more treats and cakes to try!!

Stumbled across this lovely cafe by chance , set in an amazing building, next to “Boots” just off the Main Street in Yarm. The staff were very courteous, after being offered a seat, it was 3.50pm we were advised as they closed at 4.30pm, they only items in the display cabinet available to order. There was still plenty of cakes and desserts to choose from though. We both had coffee, one of us opting for a treacle tart, the other rocky road, we weren’t disappointed. Great service from staff, who offered fresh water for our two dogs once they’d taken our order. Bonus points!!! ++++ Would highly recommend this place if you happen to be in Yarm.

Came in with my mother for coffee and food. We were served quickly by a lady called Karen who recommended the poached eggs to my mother, I had the fruit scone. Both were beautiful, as was the coffee which was made by a young man behind the counter (loved the chocolate lettering on the cappuccino) . Overall, I couldn't fault anything and would definitely recommend it. Keep up the good work, guys

Customers are able to bring their dogs into the restaurant /cafe. While this sadly seems to be more common in cafes these days I dont agree with the pets being allowed on seats and able to put ther paws on the tables as we witnessed while we were in for a coffee. I wouldnt like to be the following customer using the table and chairs they had just used. Coffee and cake we had were fine but nothing special We probably wouldnt use this cafe again.

Did my research and narrowed down my lunch venue options in Yarm to 3, including this eatery. Sadly disappointed I went…reading other recent reviews, it would appear they have made a decision to down size their portions…so I paid near £ 10 for one slice of sourdough topped with a paltry scatter of a few mushrooms, spinach and poached egg. Felt HUGELY underwhelmed and dissatisfied (and left really hungry!) Staff were ok…nowt against their service per se…but the portion sizes were shocking. Decided to speak to the staff and the supervisor’s words were as follows “…I’d like to say you were the first person to say just this, but…”…fill in the blanks. held on to speak with the Manager who had popped out (probably for a hopefully more economical and filling lunch!).

I have lived in Yarm for many years and have been a customer of S&H on and off during that time. The cafe does great cheeses scones but they are sooo expensive along with most of the items on the menu. I realise that prices of raw materials have increased recently but the prices here have a whiff of profiteering about them given the quality and tastiness of the food in general. The staff are hit and miss depending on who serves you, a couple of the older female staff come across as a bit abrupt at times. Overall I think given the prices, visiting for a coffee is ok but the food is way too expensive given other options on the high street.

Popped in for coffee and cake, and honestly wish I hadn't bothered. The staff were so engrossed in socialising and chatting to each other,it took them ages to notice us! As others have mentioned there were tables needing to be cleared and it was rather unpleasant sitting amongst them. Instead of chatting the staff needed to up there game . The coffee was OK and scone average, quite pricey too. Used to come in years ago when it first started to do lunches, great then ,not so now, needs a good manager to sort staff out.

Visited the cute, quirky cafe at the back of the shop today, it was so idillic and amazing service on arrival… we were greeted by a gentleman who seated us very swiftly and once seated our order was pleasantly taken. They had a beautiful menu selection and some amazing yummy cakes to experience. Also there was an ample amount of homemade produce to eat in and takeaway. The lady who took our order was so informative and patient with us. And the lady who delivered our food and beverages was also amazing, going above and beyond to make our visit friendly, comfortable and really great. Definitely would recommend and visit again. We decided to have a late breakfast here one day. We ate out the back in the little garden which was quite charming (and the reason I gave it two points). However, the breakfast was horrible. My husband had beans on toast and found the beans watery and sweet. They should try using some decent beans like Branston which are in a thick sauce and savoury tasting. So he just ate the toast. I had an English breakfast and it was horrible, cold and dry. The worst bit was the eggs. It nauseates me when they are not cooked properly. They had a thick layer of clear mucus wobbling around on top, revolting. The bacon was dried up and had a very odd taste but I didn't really eat any of it anyway, as my appetite went after navigating the big globs of snotty uncooked eggs all over the edge of my plate where I'd attempted to scrape it off. Definitely wouldn't come back. The gift shop bit is quite nice though.

After visiting Yarm each Thursday we have had lunch at Stricklands Cafe. The cafe itself is very cosy and welcoming but the food is very mediochre. Each time we visited over the last 5 Thursdays we came away feeling disappointed in the food. We continued to visit because we could always get a seat, and in the hope that we would discover a meal that was more enjoyable. Last Thursday rather than our usual salmon salad, wensleydale and cheese toastie or crayfish and chilly sandwhich, we ordered the sausage, mushroom and onion pie with potato wedges. The pie was tasty but really salty which spoiled it. The wedges were so salty that they were totally inedible. Also on my last two visits I had to alert the staff that there was no loo roll in one of the ladies lavatories. We have tried to give this place the benefit of the doubt, but last Thursday's visit was the last straw.

I ordered the Strickies full English breakfast and after a fifteen minute wait was presented with a rectangular plate of food. The only really good thing on it was the black pudding, that was amazing but sadly the rest was a disaster. The baked beans although tasty were so dry as all the sauce had been cooked away leaving a thick residue and mushed up beans the texture was unpleasant. The bacon was akin in my leather belt and the sausage had obviously been cooked for some time and kept warm as one side was really nice and tender and the other tough, chewy and not good at all. The tomatoes, although fresh had been poorly presented with one half a bit smushed up but they were hot and tasted okay. The portobello mushroom, aka the rubbery thing, aka the disc of doom, was totally yuk, no taste with a horrid texture. The poached eggs were pretty good if a little overcooked but were let down by not being drained enough as there was a lot of water on the plate. Finally the toast, I had to ask for butter which was unexpected and could only eat one slice as the other was burnt. I can't fault the bread only the way it was toasted. In conclusion was it worth nearly seven pounds, probably not. Would I have it again, no as there were too many issues but I would come for something else as the environment and atmosphere is second to none.

We decided to go shopping in Yarm and have our lunch here. We picked a nice table at the rear of the restaurant and then ordered our food. My wife and I decided to have a prawn open sandwich each with tea and coffee. When the food arrived the prawn open sandwiches were served with coleslaw and a salad. The presentation looked great but I was shocked to find that the food was served on wooden serving platters. I started to eat the food which was delicious, but noticed two large cracks in the wooden board where some of the prawn dressing had soaked down into. This made me think that germs could be lurking in those cracks if the wooden boards had not been boiled at a high temperature before the food was served. I decided to go back to the desk and ask for a plate. I then moved all of my food off the wooden board onto the plate. I ate all of my food and thought it was delicious.A young lady came to our table to clear away our plates etc. so I mentioned my concerns about the food being served on wooden boards and the possibility of contamination. She said that she would mention it to the kitchen. I was hoping that the kitchen manager would come over to allay my concerns but that did not happen. A little bit disappointing really.

Had a delicious afternoon tea today at Strickland and Holt. The table was set ready for us and ample tea served in lovely china was available on arrival. The staff were very pleasant, attentive without being fussy. The afternoon tea was delicious and served very nicely. At under £10 a head, we will certainly return. Thank you.

The shop and café have been revamped over the years. The café is no longer upstairs. The café is not as good as it was in the past. However, I have had lunch/cakes here a few times and enjoyed it. The shop stocks a variety of gifts and the pocket money section is excellent.

This place is relaxed. You order your food and pay for it at the counter. Huge blackboards are informative. Staff friendly and obliging. Food - really good and tasty! It seems that care is taken in this wood floored eclectically furnished coffee/lunch/cakes to die for emporium. I had a beautifully presented contemporary shaped bowl of home made spicy parsnip soup alongside a pile of fresh brown bread with butter. It was delicious! I ordered cappuccino and one of their pecan nutty, caramel, thick chocolate shortbread slices. Heavenly! All of this served pleasantly and efficiently. Oh yes! I'll be back!

Been here a few times and always enjoyed the food. They serve good tea and coffees and large slices of cake which are delicious. I've also eaten their sandwiches which were equally good. Not cheap but good value, plus the added bonus of being able to stroll through the attached shop which is number one for old fashioned "pocket money toys" plus cards and gifts of all descriptions and price.

I was a visitor to Yarm and spent the day window shopping, having coffee and I asked locals where I should go for light lunch. Everyone I asked mentioned this place. It is great fun. A huge shop full of delightful gifts and a big restaurant at the rear. It was really busy but great food and a lots of choice. Great for anyone.

The cafe at Strickland and Holt is packed every time we have visited Yarm. The shop itself is a treasure trove of finds for gifts and at xmas is really evocative in the shop.On this trip we visited both for coffee and cake on one day and for a family lunch on another. The cakes seem to be home baked and the quiche for lunch was delicious. It is busy and it does get noisy, but if you plan your timing it is worth while.

Just popped in for a look in the shop, fab products, there's a bit of everything in here. He café is at the back of the shop. Ordered a sausage sarnie with onions and tomato sauce, and a peppermint tea.Initially the wifi wasn't working but there were engineers working on it and it was back up and running after half an hour.Friendly, efficient and chatty staff, nice, relaxed ambience and feel to the place. Will be more adventurous with my food order on my next visit.Keep up the fab work!!!

My mum got gift vouchers for afternoon tea for her birthday so she took me as a treat! I love going out for afternoon tea but this one was my favourite that I have had! Everything was very tasty but the scones were the best part! Would recommend to anyone but it is well worth popping in for a scone or a cake when in yarm.

We often go to Yarm to do some shopping or have a walk around the river. This time we did a walk around a section of the Teesdale Way. Afterwards we decided to have a light lunch at the cafe. It was great! They have a good varied menu for a light lunch and the surroundings are very interesting. The coffee and the lunch was lovely and the service by the young ladies was first class. The have extended the cafe at the rear and it is very light and airy. After lunch we had a walk around the shop and bought a few presents for our family. We really enjoyed Strickland and Holt and will definitely return again. It's a great place to have a light lunch or a coffee.

Called in late morning and the place was heaving. We got one of the last tables on the cafe. I think the bit we sat in was an overflow as there were all sorts of kitchen utensils for sale in the shelves next to us !?Anyway that didn't spoil from the experience. I would recommend a visit anytime.

Booked in advance and we arrived in a large group. Our tables were together and reserved. The afternoon tea was excellent with more than enough to go round. A lovely experience! Have been again, just as good!

We had afternoon tea today and it was absolutely lovely. Our waitress Libby was very attentive and made it a very pleasurable experience. Nothing was too much trouble and the setting was perfect.

I used to love this place, the food is good and the staff have always been and generally still are excellent with the exception of the new lady who is very unprofessional and rude and made me feel very uncomfortable when I went in recently. Being around while she spoke to staff and customers the way she did wasn't pleasant, and she clearly has no idea what she's doing. It's very chaotic in there recently, not at all the relaxing atmosphere I used to go in for. Given the rising costs I understand changes being made but putting up the price of milkshakes and cutting the quality is just cheeky, when you buy "speciality" you expect good quality.

Visited last night for our wedding anniversary hoping for something a bit special. Lovely decor and ambiance but we were really disappointed with the food. I ordered the stake with chimichurri. It arrived with peppercorn sauce (I assumed they must have ran out of chimichurri but it wasn’t mentioned). Stake was really fatty and chewy and difficult to cut through. It was served with fries which were just frozen McDonald’s type fries. I expected something more home cooked. My husband ordered a coffee after the meal and was told the machine was broken. He then ordered a whiskey and the server had no idea what he was asking for despite it being on their very limited drinks menu. We then waited 20 minutes for the drinks before being told they couldn’t find the whiskey. He ordered an alternative scotch and it was served with ice. My husband had to send it back and ask for another. When the bill came the peppercorn sauce mentioned earlier was charged as an extra despite this not being my choice. The meal cost us £200 and an additional £45 for taxis back and forth. It really was not worth the price! Staff seemed nice if a little neglectful ( had to ask them to take away empty glasses that were sat there for the whole meal on our small table) and inexperienced. They knew nothing about the menu and drinks available despite the menu being very small. I wouldn’t return.

Our 2nd visit to this Excellent pub, they do 2 for £15 even on a Friday night where lots of pubs are Monday to Thursday only. They have 3 or 4 flavour thatchers on draught that I can't find anywhere else. Warm and welcoming. As a party of 4 we sat in the corner out the way and ordered food and a couple of drinks.... Very reasonable prices. The lad came over 20mins ahead of time to let us know the child in the group had to leave so no rushing about. Definitely somewhere we will be returning to. I would say the car park seems small for the size of the pub and you would expect parking issues but we have never had a problem getting parked.
