We had afternoon tea today and it was absolutely lovely. Our waitress Libby was very attentive and made it a very pleasurable experience. Nothing was too much trouble and the setting was perfect.

We were a party of 7 on a busy Saturday afternoon. However service was qick and efficent and friendly. Plenty of tea and coffee was available throughout our time. The food was well present, finger sandwiches with choice of fillings. Fruit and pain scones a plenty with jam and dishes of clotted cream. Small cakes on top layer if you could manage them. We brought lots home. We were asked frequently if all was okay and did we need more tea or coffee. Was an enjoyable afternoon and not rushed to leave either. Xx

I can't remember exactly what month we visited, however it was one of the months during the lockdown period where afternoon was permitted (in spaced out seats). The first thing we noticed was that it was very difficult to get anyone's attention. The staff remained right at the entrance chatting (possibly for Covid reasons ?) but weren't checking if anyone needed anything - and didn't tell you how to get their attention if you did - given how far away they were. Sereval times we were left waving our arms in the air trying to get someone to come over. At one point I gave up and had to walk over to where they were chatting. The food itself was good as always, apart form the fact that the scone flavours available were cheese and fruit. One of us didn't like cheese and one didn't like fruit. I asked if it was possible to just have plain scones. Or even plain and fruit. Usually here you get one plain and one fruit each, so for us, one has the plain and one has the fruit ones. I was told no problem. I assumed this meant that either they had some already made for others who didn't like fruit / cheese, or they were kindly going to make some for us as per their normal scone selection (we weremore than happy to wait). Unfortunately, when they arrived it was clear that what we actually had been given were scones that were several days old and VERY hard. We couldn't eat them. This was the first of our arm waving episodes The second being for the same issue - and the third for a tea refill. Anyway after eventually getting someone's attention the lady looked at them, confirmed they were inedible, apologised and said it would be sorted. The scones were then seemingly microwaved and brought back. For the first 30 seconds we had lovely warm scones, however they quickly cooled and went back to the same hard scones we'd had a few minutes earlier. I'm not sure why they changed the menu. And yes for some reason plain scones were suddenly no longer on it - and yes it was nice of them to offer to "provide" some. However had they told us that they were 2 or 3 days old, we would have just taken what was on offer and took the scones home for someone else to eat - rather than being given microwaved stale ones. We love the fresh scones we usually get here (it's our favourite part of the afternoon tea), so we were really disappointed. I hope they have gone back to offering plain for those who prefer them that way. Other than that - the food was lovely. One point to note though is that in our numerous visits, no one has EVER explained to us what the desserts are. OR what's in the vegetarian sandwiches. This is standard in most places.

Wonderful visit to Wynyard for afternoon tea. The first since lockdown. Impressed by the precautions in place and how pleased the staff were to welcome us back. The afternoon tea was excellent as usual. My partner had the gentleman's afternoon tea and I had the regular one. I do think it might be time to change the name of the "Gentlemans"to the "savoury" afternoon tea. Lots of ladies prefer a savoury meal over a sweet one. Service was a little slow but we were out for a relaxing afternoon so it wasn't an issue. Social distancing was in place throughout the Hall.

Just returned from having afternoon tea which we were given as a gift. We were shown to the Library, a beautiful room to enjoy the experience. This was made even better by having a table next to the window to enjoy the view of the parkland Service was first class and unobtrusive, The tea did'nt include the normal sandwiches but had a small Goats Cheese and Butternut Squash tart, a slice of sausage roll, small brioche roll with roasted salmon and Flatbread with coronation checken, all delicious.3 small but perfect scones and clotted cream and a lovely selection of sweet treats. We were given a choice of teas to accompany our food. We had a lovely relaxed couple of hours on such a dreary day Thank you Wynyard

We were looking forward to our repeat visit on Boxing Day so had high expectations of tasty delicacies to tanterlise our tastebuds. We were directed to a comfortable sofa and armchair in the centre of the sumptuously decorated room. The background music was opera and it was too loud so felt intrusive. We ordered both the Traditional (£24.50) and Gentleman's (£27.50) afternoon teas. Coffee was limited to a single cup whilst tea was served in a pot. The food arrived but did not look tempting. We searched for the turkey, stuffing & cranberry on flatbread but could only find coronation chicken which had been substituted without comment nor apology; it tasted as if bought from an inferior supermarket. Unfortunately, this was the theme for the afternoon. We tried a small bite from all that was on offer as that's all that was needed to determine the lack of taste and inferior texture. When we were ready to made an early departure, we waved at the staff who were busy chatting by the bar only to be ignored until the third attempt. We now understand why there were so few people in the room - word must have spread of the terrible quality coupled with extortionate prices. There are many country houses offering afternoon tea so we won't be returning to Wynard Hall where we were ripped off.

Went for Christmas afternoon tea this afternoon. Setting superb and lovely table. Requested gluten free afternoon tea and when it arrived I was very excited by the choice . However ...the scones both fruit and cheese were inedible. I think they had been frozen and reheated in microwave as was a cake on top tier . They were so dry and hard we couldn’t eat them . I did mention it when I paid the bill . I am just disappointed for the price charged when I have had afternoon tea at small cafes locally and had fantastic fresh scones and cakes. Also. Being coeliac make most of my cakes and pastry’s myself and bake better. Would now think twice about returning .... But in a positive note the two people with me who are not gluten free said their afternoon tea was fabulous and their scones amazing

The atmosphere of the dining room was very nice, the tea was delicious but it was so cold in the room. The draught coming from the unlit fires was so dreadful we asked to be moved further into the room. Apparently the fireplaces cannot be used as the chimneys smoke too much so may I suggest the hotel block up the chimneys to stop the wind whistling down and place an electric fire there. The chill spoilt a an otherwise lovely afternoon.

Enjoyed a combination of savoury & sweet (ordered 2 x gentleman, & 1 x traditional) all very tasty, & more than sufficient for 3 people.Only criticism would be Wynyard’s refusal to swap the whisky (included with the gent’s) for Prosecco, charging £6 per glass (despite us declining the whisky), even though we were paying full price for the visit, unlike others who had discount vouchers. This does nothing for customers goodwill, or their reputation!

We came here as 3 adults with a 19 month old following their Garden Plant Fayre. We were greeted by a very cheerful young lady who showed us to our seats in the library. The library is just beautiful. It can outrival a few afternoon tea settings ive been to in London. The view outside when the sun is out shining is just exquisite. We decided to try the silver needle and milk rooibos and loved the subtle taste. My mother loved the coffee as it was strong and not your watered down kind. When the young man delivered the food, our initial thoughts were ‘oh we might have to order more’. We were proven wrong as the food was quite rich and filling. The clotted cream was yum! Our child ate everything with gusto. We barely finished our desserts and were still full at night. Thank you for a pleasant day. We will be visiting again.

My husband and I visited recently for afternoon tea with full price vouchers (not Groupon) bought for my birthday. We handed the vouchers in at the restaurant reception desk and then were shown to our 'table' in the library. Our table was a settee and coffee table which we were not particularly happy about as we would have preferred to sit up at a proper table to enjoy our afternoon tea but we didn't say anything (maybe we should have requested to move on hindsight). Firstly the waitress came to enquire if we were using vouchers eg groupon etc and we said no. Couldn't understand why she needed to ask this, surely it doesn't matter how you are paying anyhow, all customers should be treated the same. Then she came with a pot of tea each and cups but no milk. We waited for about 15 minutes and then she came back with our afternoon tea food when I had to ask her to bring us some milk. No apology, just went and brought some. By this time the tea was really stewed, so eventually we asked for some more tea. The teapot this time was leaking so badly half of it was dribbling on the carpet. The tea leaves were obviously blocking the spout as it hadn't been rinsed out properly. We pointed this out to a passing waitress and she went to get us another teapot, again without any apology. The food was fine but certainly not outstanding as we would have expected at £25 per person. There was plenty of it but the cakes were very disappointing and seemed to be bought in and not special at all as I was hoping. The other item which was puzzling was that there was a cheese scone on my plate and a toasted tea cake on my husband's gentlemans tea and yet there was no butter provided so we had to ask for some. Finally I had to request a box to bring home the remaining items. Service throughout was not as you would expect in a hotel like this and I suggest some staff retraining needs to happen. All in all a very disappointing experience.

The atmosphere of Wynyard Hall is like being in Downton Abbey. The rooms are of splendid proportions and furniture and drapes are all in excellent condition. We ordered a standard afternoon tea and a gentleman's afternoon tea and shared them both. The gentlemans tea came with a shot of whisky. Sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, a mini scotch egg and a sausage roll plus 4 desserts per tea. We couldn't eat it all and were offered a box to bring home the leftovers. I 'do' afternoon tea quite often and have to say this is the best afternoon tea venue in the area.

I would not have hesitated to give it 5 star excellent rating other than it took several times over a few days for them to answer the phone so we could book a time for the tea. I had to connect direct to reception to fix an appropriate time for our tea. Now the good things. Try to pick a nice day and go early because there is so much to see. It has a garden to visit, 2 shops to visit and a restaurant as part of the garden area, plus much more. The tea was served in a beautiful hall with a pleasant relaxed atmosphere and by very helpful staff. The serving was well presented, a nice mixture of food and limitless supply of coffee or tea. There is also a beautiful place to sit outside overlooking a huge lake and beautiful country side. Its not just the food that is so good but the whole experience. It was a special treat bought for us and if you have someone who you want to give a special treat to I think you can do a lot worse than this.

I go for afternoon tea fairly regularly. Having recently had a baby, I had not been to Wynyard Hall since Christmas so was looking forward to afternoon tea today. Unfortunately, it did not live up to previous visits, or indeed, the competition. The service was poor. I was left for 30 minutes while I waited for the rest of my party and wasn't offered the opportunity to order tea/coffee. When we did order, tea and coffee was literally slammed down on the table as the staff were so hurried. My jam had been opened and used by a previous customer and had butter in it. The waiter did apologise but this shouldn't have happened, especially at £22.50 per person! When the afternoon tea arrived, it is starting to look dated. The sandwiches, which really were no frills, arrived on a separate side plate!! The scones, which used to arrive warm, were cold, of significantly different heights and a little hard around the edges. The eclair was massive and so heavy with Creme patisserie we couldn't finish it. The delice was dry and unpleasant, which we left. The pistachio and raspberry Victoria sponge was lovely. The tea and coffee were good as always, although we had to ask for a hot refill rather than it being offered. Wynyard is starting to rely on its fabulous building rather than the quality of its offering. The competition offers significantly more for a lot less - Let There Be Crumbs offers 2 afternoon teas for £20 and their cakes and pastries are made by a proper patisserie chef on site. Wynyard should be able to offer far, far better. I'm afraid I won't be returning. What a shame.

A very disappointing and poor afternoon tea ,one of our afternoon teas was a gluten free ,we informed them of this on booking and by phone 48 hrs before ,stated on other occassions a small ham salad had been provided.we waited about half an hour after the tea pots had arrived for the food ,when the gluten free afternoon tea was brought out the salad in a bowl consisted of lettuce, tomato ,cucumber and onion not a peice of ham in sight or anything else to go on the salad, the gluten free scones andcakes were so rock hard there was no way they could have been eaten ,to bake gluten free cakes and scones is a little more difficult we acknowledge that but if an establishment is not capable of offering the same standard as a normal afternoon tea dont offer it as an option ,it was a disgrace ,when the manager was called we didnt feel he was too happy about the complaint ,then came back and told us the chef said they are like that because they are gluten free !!!!! I booked afternoon tea for my mums 70th as a surprise with her friends. The surroundings were beautiful but unfortunately the rest of the experience didn't live up to it. We were sat for over 30 minutes after arrival and no one came to offer us drinks or start serving us, we had to ask. The food then took quite a while to arrive and when we did get it there was baking parchment in between the Victoria sponge (top and bottom!) We got offered a replacement when we pointed it out and some mints as an apology which was good of them but really should never have happened. Two people on our table had dietary requirements and had made a special request on arrival. They then repeated it when we ordered our teas and coffee. However when the food came it hadn't been acknowledged and staff still got it wrong after that too. It wasn't a complicated request. I think it was simply no cream cheese with the salmon sandwich from memory. I think they may have even brought cream cheese sandwiches after that! No one came back over to ask if everything was ok or to ask if we needed anything else. We had brought a cake and they never brought it out, only to offer us it back when we went to find someone to pay the bill. We ended up lighting the candles then after half the party had had to leave. It was all just a real shame and certainly didn't live up to expectations unfortunately.

We booked a table for 16.30, we turned up maybe 5 minutes early than the 16.30 reservation. We stood at a desk where two waitresses were and after a little while we were acknowledged, we said we had afternoon tea booked for 16.30 & the waitress found us on her sheet. She said something to us that none of our party understood, we asked again what she had said & she repeated herself telling us to go and find a seat in a location we weren't sure off. We asked where this area was & she pointed out of the library area, (where our afternoon tea reservation was made for) We all stood a little confused & it was fair to say it was quite obvious none of us had any idea where we were supposed to find a seat. We proceeded back out in to the entrance hall, with no more communication from the waitress who just stood at her desk area.We sat down in the reception/lobby area and it became clear to us about 5/10 minutes later when they came across with cups & saucers that this was in fact the area we were going to have our afternoon tea. I'm not quite sure about anyone else who does afternoon tea but for me, it's all about the experience, sitting relaxed in a nice environment, usually with garden views, chatting leisurely to family & friends. Not sat been the only people in the lobby like there was no room at the inn. We had collectively decided we were not going to stay, one, the initial service received from the waitresses that they couldn't give a damn and two, eating in the lobby with no ambience. We asked to speak with a manager before we left just to make our feelings known, again, sadly, it was as if it was no great loss that customers would rather leave without dining. The managers response to the waitress was that it was due to a language barrier that we didn't understand where we were to sit... I know what your thinking, I live in Italy or Norway, nope, I'd travelled less than 5 miles to visit! We were begrudgingly offered a glass of fizz each but it was too little too late. We left, never to return, sorry!

We booked this a while ago and they were very accommodating, allowing us to change the size of party. We sat in the main room. The service was very good, very attentive. They were happy to change sandwich options and kept the tea flowing. We had both mothers and both children, so 6 in total and it was all very relaxing with good quality food in a very nice surrounding, the pianist was playing as we left, so you could sit in the main hallway, have a drink and relax further. It's the 2nd time we've been, both times very good and worth a special treat.

Booked a surprise Birthday afternoon tea , week gone Sunday at £22.50 per head!Seated in the very quiet 'Library ' not many in! at 14.30.Food served and the egg sandwiches were wet and soggy and still in process of thawing out; or over chilled; did not want to spoil mams birthday surprise so we tried the cakes and they were not much better, exceptionally cold and again more than just moist!!We ordered drinks and left the food . Departed paying £122.50 .Mother put a brave face on ; but on reflection it was a very expensive experience which was a total waste of hard earned money of two young daughters who would not dare complain. On reflection a call was made and just like the afternoon tea the response from the manager Lewis was just as cold. He could not even get the dates correct!!You should have made it known at the time; he repeatedly stated and we served hundreds that day and all good? All comments were questioned and he reluctantly offered a half price return, which I find an insult; no apology more that he disbelieved what I had said.I must say I expected a more gentle repy, after labouring the points at least he agreed to follow up with head chef and get back to me?Several days later without reply I made contact; what a waste of time; now I have requested the case to be forwarded to the general manager hoping to speak with a more reasonable person.Such a shame, as been here many times; and a big event was potentially to be booked here in the future but this experience has left the same taste in my mouth as the very poor afternoon tea!!!!

I've been to a few different places over the years for afternoon tea and I have to say this one was probably the most disappointing. The seating was very uncomfortable and two of the slices of cake were a little stale. You're basically just paying for the location.

The whole place is stunning. If I ever get married again, I will be booking Wynyard! When the afternoon tea arrives, you think it won't fill you up. It does. Fresh everything, accommodations made it you let them know in good time. Faith free etc... Tasted amazing and as much tea (lots of variety) as you can drink. We asked if we could have a look in the Chapel, and even though they were busy and setting up for a party later, they had no problem in letting us have a quick look. Perfect for a Mother's Day treat, or whatever, whoever you want to treat. A but pricey but you pay for the ambience as well as the food. We had be take some home, like I said, it might not look like a lot, but it's fresh, rich and filling.

We visited Wynyard Hall to celebrate our anniversary. The grounds, hall and restaurant are stunning and a delight to the eye. We both decided to have the ribeye steak so ordered a bottle of Argentinian Malbec which they did not have, so we then ordered a bottle of Chilean Merlot which was also not available. Finally we thought we'd ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio Blush Rose but when I came to pay the bill discovered we had been given another Rose which was £6 more. The steak was OK as were the sweet potato chips, the peppercorn sauce watery and overall the meal was far from memorable. We had coffee to finalise our lunch having had just the main course. The staff are friendly and efficient the surroundings outstanding but regrettably considering the cost the food is only mediocre.

I bought gift vouchers for Afternoon Tea at Wynyard Hall as a birthday present for a friend, and we booked to go in early December 2016. If you are buying gift vouchers, do be aware that they are only valid for 6 months,We arrived with plenty of time to spare so had a look around the new Farm Shop and Café. Everything seems very new and lovely and the new gardens look well worth a visit. Our Afternoon Tea was served in the library, which was dressed for Christmas and felt very festive. We were told by our waitress that the afternoon tea price had increased by £1 per person from the advertised price, as they were serving the Festive Afternoon tea in December . I explained that we had gift vouchers and that we had booked well in advance. This was checked and the waitress confirmed that we did not have to pay any extra. We had contacted Wynyard in advance to request vegetarian sandwiches, however when our tea arrived it contained meat sandwiches. These were swiftly taken away and we were eventually served with an afternoon tea with vegetarian sandwiches. The food was delicious and we were given limitless tea, coffee and hot water.Despite the little blips at the start of our visit, we had a very nice time and I would recommend Wynyard Hall

Visited on Sunday 27th to celebrate a friends 40th as we thought it would be a treat. First member of staff we encountered was friendly as she hung up our coats but that is where friendliness ends. We ordered our afternoon tea which took a long time to arrive, you don't get everything that is advertised. Apparently they do a signature egg dessert which had me intrigued but we didnt get one so will never know. Four finger sandwiches which where dry on the edges, two scones and three tiny cakes is what we got. Not once where we asked if we would like anymore tea or if everything was ok, had to ask for table to be cleared, had to search for someone to ask for bill then had to knock on kitchen door to find someone to pay. I had high expectations for this place but I really shouldn't of got my hopes up. Would never go again.

We've just been for a Champagne afternoon tea at Wynyard, please expect beautiful surroundings and lovely tea, cakes and sandwiches, that's a given. Please don't however, expect to be asked if you are enjoying the tea or indeed if you would like any more tea. Expect to box up any uneaten cakes yourselves for a take home and don't expect your table to be cleared at any point. Expect to be spectacularly ignored once the initial service on your arrival has been ticked off. You might expect to feel special for the day, we certainly hope you do.

Our friends had treated us to have an afternoon tea here. When we arrived we were greeted by the splendour of the hall. It is magnificent. We had our afternoon tea in the library. We had a table for four so we were not near the windows as the majority of those tables are for two. We still had a good view out of the window though. We had various sandwiches along with various cakes and then scones with jam and clotted cream. There were some mini lemon meringue pies. We also had a sort of passion fruit mousse in an egg. It was all absolutely delicious and we really enjoyed it! This is the second time we have been here and would definitely return.

Wynyard Hall is very impressive as you drive over the bridge up towards the Main House. Set in wonderful gardens complete with an orangery and a lake it is so quintessentially English. Most Halls and restaurants offer afternoon tea, however, the experience at Wynyard Hall has its own take on the experience complete with the introduction of a rather special dessert served in an 'egg' and egg cup. A good choice of delicious sandwiches, scones and pastries completed the 'tea' experience. Well worth the visit and weather permitting the visit to the gardens adds to the charm and day out.

Visited Wynyard Hall for afternoon tea with my husband on 1st May 2016. My husband chose the gentleman's afternoon tea which looked great and tasted great. I had the traditional afternoon tea which again looked great and tasted great. A choice of tea was offered and we chose the everyday tea which was really disappointing. I was expecting nice lose leaf tea but instead got a tea bag! They seemed to be cheap tea bags which didn't release much flavour. The colour was grey when poured with a little milk. Overall a very enjoyable afternoon and the food was lovely but very disappointed with the tea.

Having a lazy afternoon doing nothing and then went for afternoon tea, with prosecco of course. Enjoyable relaxed atmosphere with some good sandwiches, scones and cakes. With some smaller puddings to finish off. Enjoyed the experience and would return. On the down side the scones were a little bit dry and could have benefitted from a little more clotted cream. We didn't view the gardens as the weather was not the best but will probably return in the early summer to do this. Staff were very helpful and requested if there were any dietary requirements which is sometimes missed by servers even today.

On booking the afternoon tea as belated mother's day present, I found the online system a little confusing as it asks to book a table at the restaurant. I was a little disappointed as thought it would be in nicer surroundings than a restaurant. But after Wynyard Hall rang and wanted to confirm if we were booking lunch or afternoon tea (because the system does not specify) I learnt that afternoon tea could be taken in the library. Then on arriving we were told the library was indeed the room of choice that day. We were seated in a corner but asked to be seated by one of the windows of which they were very accommodating and we spent the next 2.5 hours looking out on the Wynyard Hall estate watching the birds and even the deer from a distance. We arrived at 12pm for the earlier afternoon tea sitting. The service was impeccable, and despite a fire alarm early on in the afternoon, the whole experience was friendly and professional. One particular waiter was incredibly friendly and chatted to us about the deer and was very accommodating when we asked for more tea and hot water, I believe is name was James. All staff were lovely, explaining what the cakes and desserts were and we were even able to swap some sandwiches (as I do not like egg or smoked salmon). The desserts we were served included a passion fruit meringue pie, passion fruit and panna cota in a novelty egg shell, victoria sponge, chocolate moose and a fruit and plain scone each with raspberry and strawberry jam and clotted cream and butter. All of which were delicious- if not on the small side (although I couldn't have managed any more). If I was to nit pick, I would say the only thing that let the food down was that the scones were a little on the dry side.Overall I would rate this service and experience very highly, it was everything I expected it to be. I would have preferred the cost to be a little less as it was £21.50 each and I doubt many people would afternoon tea by themselves making the cost at least £43, but it was a treat ad I feel it was well worth it.

Complained to staff who thought it was ok to offer a complimentary coffee which we had already bought and returned as it was cold so why would we want more coffee?? I feel we were treat with no manners or politeness and staff need training for customer service seriously my advice is to keep clear and save you're money we would have been more satisfied with a tin of Heinz Soup...waste of money and BTW wine £6.60 a glass not even half full.

The tea room itself is gorgeous and will be lovely when the garden is in bloom. The food was edible but the choice of sandwiches was so limited, and only 1 hot food on offer. No gorgeous scones or lush cakes on display. Had a very nice afternoon tea in beautiful surroundings, the drive to the hall itself is worth the trip. Hidden away in Teesside is this fantastic building and grounds, in which you can enjoy a reasonably priced slice of British tradition. We were served in a grandly furnished room overlooking a lake, by welcoming staff. Afternoon tea starts at a shade under £20, which includes (small) sandwiches and delicious cakes, with a choice of various blends of tea, and coffee. The highlight were the scones, just about perfect, but I was slightly disappointed by the amount of sandwiches offered-however we both came away full. This is afternoon tea after all and not lunch or dinner. Very nice, thoroughly enjoyed it. If you want a treat yourself, or want to spoil someone else, then you can't really go wrong.
