Stray's in Newark and Sherwood

Came here for the first time for a quick bite before a trip. I was served quickly and the coffee was very tasty and the cake was fresh. I couldn’t pay by card because the Internet was lost and I didn’t have cash with me, unfortunately, and they told me it’s okay, you’ll bring the money in later. Cozy atmosphere, I want to take a closer look at the interior. Of course I will come back here.☺️

First time in new Stray's setting. Coffee great, cake as good as ever, service good, really pleasant. An old fashioned word but it perfectly sums up the experience.

A really lovely evening out at Strays in their new home at the Ossington. Service was wonderful throughout - staff were sooo friendly, and the atmosphere with the jazz was so relaxed but enjoyable. In the summer its going to be wonderful to be outside on the terrace 😊 Food was also very tasty - we had a range of dishes (chicken supreme, pizzas and pastas) - all were delicious. If I just had one point for improvement it would be that the arancini could have done with a bit more flavour, but that’s a minor point in the grand scheme of a lovely evening. Great to see a local business doing so well, and I really hope it continues! Strongly recommend a visit! 😊

Really sad offering for mother's day lunch. Too many things weren't right so we'll leave it another few months before trying again.

Well worth a visit only had drinks on this occasion. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Definitely will be coming back.

I absolutely love visiting Strays when it was in town but now it’s just not the same. The food is relatively alright. When I first visited my partner had plastic on his pizza. No discount was given off the bill or offered to remake. Also they did a beautiful chicken caesar salad with breaded chicken which is now just plain chicken. The portions are smaller too. I also miss ordering at the counter where I can view the cakes. I will still visit but not as often as I used to. I hoped after being open a few months things would change but you wait ages for drinks and have to remind them when they forget drinks. The only positive is they still continue to do blue light discount.

Strays has moved to a new venue near the river, which provides open plan seating and detracts from the quirkiness of the old venue. Full english Breakfast was pleasant, and coffee was good. The bug bear was the service we asked three times for the bill and took us 10 mins from asking to being able to leave. I'm not sure what was happening with the pizza over but waffs of smoke filled the area, we stank of smoke as we walked around Newark.

We went at a busy time so expected to wait for a table which took around 20 minutes, food service took an hour, so our drinks were cold or finished. We were offered complimentary drinks which took a further 20 minutes (after we finished our meals) and a discount for the wait, but allergen requirements were not met. The staff denied making the error and insisted precautions were taken. My friend is now having problems as a result.

Terrible service Just wanted a coffee and soft drink Couldn't even remember a coffee and coke

Overpriced and trying to be somthing there not. I arrived with my toddler and dog. We were sat right by the hottest radiator and hot pipes leading to it that were exposed that I didn't want my child touching. Food took 45 mins. I had a pasta dish. Pasta was sloppy and over cooked chorizo was from a packet in slices and it was swimming in boiling hot pasta sauce. Garlic bread was over cooked and crispy. Party of 8 near us got pizzas at different times and other party members where left with no food. Again got the excuse of training new staff. Training should be done prior to opening. Pasta is not that hard to cook. Will not be returning. Terrible.

First time at the new Strays, not disappointed, lovely atmosphere. Only had drinks this visit. Attentive staff. Had a look at the new Pizza Oven. It's very impressive. Will be in to sample soon.

Stood ten minutes waiting by the door,being ignored ,half the menu wasn't available,had a coffee and went somewhere else ...

Went on a Saturday at around 12:30. 4 of us waited 10 minutes in the small entrance until we were told there were no tables and it was possibly a 40 minute wait but no guarantees we could get a table (there was no facility to book online). There don’t seem to be enough staff on duty - it’s certainly not their fault. We won’t be coming back until or unless the service gets better. Probably try again in a years time, if they are still open.

Chose to visit strays today instead of a bigger chain as we haven't been to the new venue and like to support local businesses but unfortunately really regret it. It took 30 minutes for our coffees to arrive, very poor selection of cakes and seeing as though it was 11am cake is the only option food wise. No atmosphere compared to old venue. Won't be visiting again.

We have been loyal customers of strays ever since are daughter worked there before went to uni. Today was are first visit to the new venue due family commitments, well all I can say is very disappointing. 10 minutes waiting in the door way the poeple behind us just turned around and left, 3 separate staff asked if we had been ask to be seated, manager finally come and seated, us to then wait over 15 minutes with staff all around us for none of them to ask if we where ready to order. Ended up with us walking out on the way out one member of staff said bye. To at this point we pointed out we had been served, no response. I spoke a member of staff at the bar and pointed out the above, got no apology. I think they are going to lose alot of loyalty with the way they are going things, bring back the old strays ways. I won't be back

Awful service, took over an hour for food to come out , drinks took a while also to come, food not even that great, definitely will not be going again need more staff

Looks the part but sadly not!... Arrived 5.15pm. Sat waiting 15mins for drinks. Told by waitress "think might have table!" Told by Manager "can fit you in but likely to be at 6.00pm" Told by waitress "unfortunately no table available at 6.00pm could be later" (obviously the manager then disappeared, I guess so he didn't struggle to explain why) Time now is 5.55pm! Yes a 40mins complete waste of time. Come on guy's, get your act together or you'll shut yourselves.

Really disappointed with our visits to the new Strays, it has lost that friendly buzz that was always guaranteed. My heart went out to the new waitress’s who were trying so hard and were constantly apologising. The table service doesn’t allow you to see the choice of cakes which in comparison to the Strays of old are not of the same standard. The loyalty system is not working if you want to use cash …… Unsure at the moment if I would go out of my way for our coffee and cake treat 😔

We will never return. No tables and no attempt to accommodate us and told although spare tables in the restaurant area we couldn’t go in there because we only wanted a snack. Trying to be something it’s not. Front of house staff unfriendly and unwelcoming and didn’t even acknowledge us. They allowed two people to hog a larger table which would have better accommodate a group. A group of us often go to Newark for lunch but we won’t bother returning. Having previously worked in hospitality, I know one of the first rules is at least to greet people as they enter and at least try and help.

Helpful efficient staff, managed to accommodate us as a group of four (with a very well behaved dog) even though they were very busy. Lovely food - the Chicken Caesar Salad and Burger were superb! Lovely atmosphere with gentle music in the background. Would be happy to come back when in the area. Highly recommended.

I so want Strays to work and I appreciate how popular it is as such a lovely venue and location so it pains me to say what a huge disappointment the pizza was last night. My friend and I both ordered a margarita, there's not many ingredients so you can't go wrong. Well it seems you can. Despite lovely staff and a decent wine, our pizzas came without basil (one of the 3 ingredients listed) and we had to ask for it to be added...we were given 3 leaves each. The base is really well made but no sign of marinara sauce under the cheese, it really was just like cheese on bread. Not a hint of "Italian" flavours, just dry and bland. We asked for a garlic oil or something to add flavour and the best they could do was aioli. Please review your recipe. You've nailed the base, I can see you've addressed the staffing which is great, but I'm so saddened that this was my first food experience with you as I was expecting so much more. If you advertise basil and olive oil as the ingredients, add it, that's why we ordered it, and please get that marinara on the base. I love melted cheese but I can do cheese on toast at home. I'm not giving up on you yet but I won't be ordering a pizza again 😔

Waited 30 minutes for a hot chocolate that never came had to leave tired and thirsty to catch my train. Very disappointed. All the customers who were seated at the same time as me were served but I barely got an apology from the wait staff who were far from rushed off their feet.

The place was warm and inviting. Colby great manager he looks after his customers. Food- menue has changed and found panini over cooked so it was hard. Prices- have gone up alot. Although lots of staff busy service took a while

I'm really sad to leave a bad review because my family and I have been coming to Strays for years before it moved to the new site, but where do I start! When I got there I was with a pushchair and my grandma had a zimmer frame. The wheelchair accessible entry was locked and blocked with a sofa. It was 10.30am and they asked if we wanted breakfast, I said yes and was led to a table. The menu says breakfast served until 11am but the waitress comes at 10.45am and says they stopped serving at 10.30am and now only have cakes until 12pm. We ordered two scones and they were stale. Service was slow. The main toilets were out of order and everyone had to queue to use the disabled toilet. I understand that things go wrong sometimes but this was just too much. Sorry to say we'll be finding somewhere else next time.

What a waste of time. I can completely understand that it's a new venue opening however I think it's absolutely ridiculous that we had to wait 40 minutes before anyone even bothered to come over to the table and I lost track of how long it took before we even got our food / drinks. When we went to order they had multiple things off the menu, they did not tell us this until we had waited nearly a hour. I believe they must've been a manager, as they was quite apologetic but very patronising and felt very fake and not sincere. I will not be returning which is a shame but maybe not to try take so much on all at once next time. What a waste of a beautiful building.

Pretty disappointing. We had seen that Strays had moved to the old Zizzi’s near the bridge in Newark and decided to give it a go for some brunch. Pros: - The full English was ok (7/10) - Lovely building - Decent “buzz” Cons: - The Avocado on toast was awful - The service was really slow - They weren’t ready when we arrived almost 2 hours after opening - value is “ok” We arrived at 10:15am and were told the main area was being mopped, so had to wait 10-15 mins. Seemed odd they weren’t ready as they’re meant to open at 8:30?! We ordered our coffees and waited a good 20 minutes for those to arrive. By the time we got our food, we’d been there almost an hour. This would have been ok if the food was worth the wait. Unfortunately I can’t say it was. The full English was ok, pretty standard with a small sausage, couple of bacon rashers, nice vine tomatoes, a flat mushroom, basic beans and some well seasoned eggs. The small Rostis were the highlight. However the “Smashed Avocado on toast”. The name of this should probably be changed because it was what seemed like basic shop bought guacamole on some cheap white toast, which was hardly toasted, with poached eggs. You’d expect this dish to at least be on a wholemeal / seeded toast. Really disappointing. The guacamole was kinda tasteless and made the bread really soggy by the end. Really disappointing for almost a tenna! Really sad because there aren’t that many good brunch spots in Newark and was hoping to make this a regular. Might try out one of the Jazz nights as I think this place could be better as a late lunch / evening venue as looked like they had some good cocktails. I think they need to concentrate on getting the basics right, walk before you can run 👍 hope it becomes a success as there’s lots of potential in such a great location.

Lovely new setting and a good range of decent quality food choices, drinks and cakes. The only issues they have right now are in spite of quite a lot of staff buzzing around, it took over 15 minutes from the point of order to receiving just a simple coffee and cake. They could really do with expediting the quick-visit orders which would have the added benefit of freeing up tables and increasing turnover. Plus it was stiflingly hot with no fresh air circulating - but they could still be getting used to the new setting.

Absolutely incredible pizza and such a lovely restaurant. Will be returning again.

I hate complaining about local companies, but looking at the reviews already it seems to be a trend with the issues I experienced today. All experiences from their previous location have been positive. Well, I walk in. Get thrown in a corner “just coffees and cake” “full” table service. The menu didn’t show what cakes were on offer, the staff weren’t very interested in telling me what was on offer. After 10 minutes someone took my order, later on they arrived. I asked for sugar, never turned up so I didn’t drink it. I also ordered a Babychino for my 3 year old, which came in a massive cappuccino cup… We couldn’t get the attention of any of the staff, there were plenty of staff too. Then after around 30/40 minutes the manager came over asking if everything was alright. I told him my complaints he said he’d take it off the order when we pay. Then we went to pay and he only took the babycino off, which was massive, I said why did you think that would be good for a 3 year old. He basically blamed a new coffee maker person. So we paid for a coffee I didn’t drink and then he said would you like their loyalty card, well… saving grace was he gave us 10% off; but I still basically paid for a coffee I didn’t drink. I mentioned this to a friend and she said the exact same thing happened to her last week. It’s such a shame, but I guess I won’t be returning

Poor service. Couldn’t accommodate 4 adults and 2 grown up children. Got turned away at 4pm when to clearly see there was plenty of space.

First visit. We waited a little while for a table but there were lots empty? So couldn't see why , by now 8 people queuing? Had to wait to get served for some time along with other tables. We saw 7 people walk out. Coffee came with no sugar. Lots of young staff looking like deer in headlights. Looking across and scanning room . We saw lots of food going to wrong tables along with our own. Staff seemed confused with table numbers?! A couple told us they were out of car park time of 2 hours, so left. Paying our bill? Took 3 attempts, our order put with another tables order , who had left anyway due to wait , so didn't have their order. We had to explain where we had sat and they had no order for that table. The food we had was lovely but we thought, a bit pricey, compared to other places with similar items. The atmosphere just felt tense from the staff to customers waiting getting wrong food. We were brought more drinks as they thought we ordered again. A staff member when clearing plates etc asked the couple who had been there over an hour, if they wanted to place their order.? Not sure we would rush back, to be honest. Sorry to leave such a review

A regular visitor to your previous coffee shop, we were looking forward to visiting your new venue. Really disappointing. Plenty of staff milling around, but I guess they were still in training. The service was dreadful. We ordered three drinks and three items to eat. One item of food appeared, had to ask where the other two were. The second one turned up 10 minutes later. We gave up on the third after half an hour. How long does it take to toast a teacake? Drinks weren't as good as your previous coffee shop either. Sorry, but we won't be returning.

New premises has the potential to be good, but currently has nowhere near enough staff. Waited ages for our order. Tables are close together so not a place for private conversation. Once they have found their feet it will probably be much better.

We were really looking forward to a wonderful coffee and something light to eat after a visit to the hairdressers. Well we went in to be greatec by a very rude man to say there was no food and the coffee service would be ages ! There were only about 6 people in the cafe! Our normal barista recognised me and said he only has 3 coffees to make, but this popus man said no it could be ages so we had to leave ! Well I n3ver we went to the Italian coffee shop near to TK Max sorry Strays will never frequent your coffee shop again !

OK this was their first day of opening at their new venue. Waited in queue for about 10 minutes for a table. The place was packed with about 25 tables. Could not see anyone with food on their table. Went past open planned kitchen. Appeared to be one chef and a helper. Could see at least 20 meal tickets waiting service. Shown table and coffee's ordered for 4 of us. These arrived after 15 min. then we ordered food and were informed it could take 45 min. 3 of us ordered Eggs Benedict. Food arrived in just under an hour. 1. The plates were cold!!. 2. Two small poached eggs and one strip of bacon were luke warm. The sauce was awful and the very thin bread bun was tasteless. Could not suggest returning due to time delays. Could see more people piling in, but not staying when told of time delays. All in all a dreadful experience. The company should have been better prepared and expected a lot of customers especially when opening a new venue. I suggest they stick to serving cakes and pastries like they used to. Will I go again NO!

Excellent tea and cakes with friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere

I used to be a regular to Strays but won’t be after today’s poor experience. I met a friend for coffee / Tea and a scone which we enjoyed but unfortunately we were served on table 71 by a most sullen waitress. (Between 1.30-2-30) She placed our drinks down on the table and didn’t even acknowledge us verbally with a ‘Hello’ To make matters worse she placed the drinks down incorrectly! Surely she could’ve asked ‘who’s is the coffee?’ She passed by our table later on and knocked the menus on the floor whilst replenishing the condiments. To our amazement she left them there so we had to pick them up. If you insist on providing table service then surely you should employ staff with a personality? I will not be following you when you move to ‘The Ossington’

I won't be returning. Dirty fries with chorizo, however there was hardly any chorizo. So oven chips for a tenner then, nice one. Service not the best either. Nice looking place but let down by food and service. Aslo they didn't have any hot sauce!

Best coffee in town. Our go-to place every time we're in Newark. Looking forward to the new position...it's even closer to the car park!

We use strays Coffee a lot but we're disappointed with the service on this occasion. Staff in service area seemed disinterested, got order wrong. Pointed out one Coffee missing, said we hadn't order 4, told us we had to go and reorder and pay !!! This we did , still no Coffee ,went to ask , no one was even interested , took no notice !!! Had to ask someone in Dishwasher area , who finally bought us a coffee, the rest of us had finished order by then . Hope this was just a one off !!!

We popped in for the first time loved the ambiance and the friendly staff. Looking forward to listening to some jazz here soon. Good luck with your move. I will take some pics on my next visit.

Updated 22.11.23 Still consistently the best tasting coffee in Newark for me! Only had cake this time, which was, as expected, excellent! As I go quite regularly, a few of the staff recognise me which is nice, but even the majority that don't are always pleasant and helpful. NEWS FLASH! Matt and Liz are expanding into the old Ossington Coffee House (Zizzis as was). Good luck guys and the team doing it with you. Before!!!! Best coffee served in Newark and there are a lot of good places competing. Food is also of above average quality. Staff and ambience is very good. Have only tried Tapas once but it was excellent. The only real down side is it can get pretty busy though I've never not found a seat. Please keep it up.

Saw this place on maps looking for somewhere nice to stop for lunch with a 2 week old baby with us. Had a lovely lunch with great customer service. Food arrived while my husband and daughter were away from the table, the lady who brought the food asked if they were off exploring and offered to find them and let them know it was here. Another member of staff offered to turn the music down if we needed a little later. Live music playing, we sat at the front of the cafe so it wasn't too loud for us anyway, but really enjoyed the music. Delicious hot chocolate. Lovely food. Nice cakes. Lovely place with lots of little nooks to sit in. Baby change available in the accessible / disabled toilet. (Could do with a hook or shelf near the change table to put the bag / bits needed for a change though - but the same for almost all change tables out and about.) Will definitely be back though.

A sprawling cafe with lots of room inside and great courtyard area. We had lunch which was very good but the service was better friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended if you are after a light lunch in Newark.

Oh dear Strays. First visit since early 2023 and it will be our last unless you improve. A quiet Tuesday and several tables were full of departed diners' pots etc. We passed the pot wash area on route to find an unreserved table, not a pretty sight or what a customer needs to see. Food ordered, (but first choices not available) along with our drinks. Eventually the food arrives, 30 mins post ordering, 2 paninis, without any form of side salad or embellishments, pale, just warm on grease proof paper. It was difficult to tell the difference in content which was of limited size and taste. Half way through the drinks arrive!!! But I did attempt to chase up order, no one around. The attitude of the server was of 'distinterest '. If I was to continue it would be about the cleanliness and condition of the building and 5star rating. However just wont come back. Poor

Well, this menu has gone downhill since our last visit. Lots of items have gone. The place now smells like a greasy chip shop… not good when it used to be great. Saturday lunchtime used to be very busy, but a table was easily found. After viewing the menu, we decided to leave. Glad we did as the table next to us was complaining about how long they had been waiting for their coffee. The waiter then proceeded to give some kind of excuse. So our money was spent elsewhere. Don't think we will ever be going back!

I Waited over 20 minutes for a tea cake and coffee. Both came cold never offered replacements or refund. Never feel welcome here!

We called in for coffee and cake and were told the wait would be 15-20 minutes. After half an hour my partner went searching for our order and was told it was on the way. Then a member of staff came to the table to say they’d run out of filter coffee so my partner opted for the alternative offered. Ten minutes later still no coffee or cake so I went in search of our order and was told it was being done ‘now’ and that they were short staffed. Several minutes later two coffees did arrive, but not what we ordered. Another long wait - we finally received coffee and cake 45 minutes after ordering it. Meanwhile the lady at the next table, who arrived 15 minutes after us, had received and eaten her lunch. It helps to be a regular, it seems!

Maybe they were just having an off day. Took an age to correct (well over 20 minutes ) a mistake when they forgot to bring out a cake with the teas. Had to ask 3 different members of staff! Cakes didn't taste fresh. Sadly quite a poor experience.

First, everything was perfect. The coffee was superb and we tried a very good Nutella cake. The music is generally jazz, very good selection and not loud. The atmosphere and energy of the place is very good and the staff kind and friendly. Vegetarian and vegan options.

Gorgeous! A great find if in Newark. The coffee is simply perfect, you can tell the baristas know their stuff with absolute attention to details! You won’t be disappointed. Had the salmon and prawn salad, A simple dish but gorgeously presented, really fresh and very tasty! The dirty fries, were awesome too highly recommend!

Victims of their own success... Waited over an hour for loaded fries and a ciabatta(!), unfortunately hadn't been warned how busy the cafe was and the layout means you have no sight of how busy it is from the till. Meant we were forced to move the car whilst waiting, had long finished our drinks by the time food had arrived and had to eat as quickly as possible to make an appointment. No apology for the wait. I shouldn't expect to still be in a cafe after 80mins. Food was fine and staff were otherwise v friendly and welcoming.

Have visited this Newark Strays coffee cafe for years now however have just visited at 11:55 on Sunday 20 August 2023 and as usual my wife and I found a table made a note of the table number and went to the coffee counter to order our coffee and was informed there was a 10minute wait as the barista was on a break. I said to the young lady behind the counter you are joking aren’t you and she replied no however, she would make us a tea if that was OK. I pointed out this was a coffee cafe and it was ridiculous no one could make us our coffee’s. Unfortunately we did not stay at Strays and never will again due to the unacceptable attitude of like it or lump it you would not have thought we were paying customers as there was no empathy whatsoever. We ended going to another coffee cafe and was served our coffee immediatelyi. I really am sorry to have had to write such a scathing review but what do they expect.

Once a fabulous bookshop with cafe, now simply a fabulous cafe. Attentive staff, great cakes with atmospheric setting inside and outside seating.

Coffee is good. Ordered some cakes. The server came back to our table to confirm what we ordered. And then the second server just delivered what we had we had said we didn't want with the first server.

Had to use the covered court yard as the garden had dogs. Food and drink lovely just a bit hot and uncomfortable. Shame about the dogs!

A labyrinth of a cafe with good food and coffee and even outdoor seating, but alas as it appears to rain 6/7 days in the area we never got to try this despite returning 4 times.

Great place for coffee and lunch. Nice helpful staff and nice atmosphere. However, the jazz music was playing rather loud and we had to speak up to be heard at our table. The friendly waitress did turn it down but the next CD played was even louder! We will be back though, as we do every time we visited to Newark.

I wanted to order the falafel tortilla on the menu that stated it came with chips and coleslaw. When my husband placed the orders he was told the tortilla was a misprint and it should say the falafel, beetroot, guacamole, salad etc is a tortilla but comes in a ciabatta role. On telling me this, I said it's not a tortilla then, and asked for the falafel, salad etc. without any bread. My husband had the fish finger sandwich. We then waited over 30mins for our food and when they came, there was no coleslaw at all and no apologies or mention of it. The falafel on my plate were like tiny little bullets (overcooked, hard & dry) the chips and other ingredients were fine. We had planned on having this then coffee and cake, but it took so long and the food was disappointing, that we went elsewhere for our coffees etc. This was our first time back at Strays for quite a while as we had been let down before and unfortunately it just sealed our dislike for the place. They really overblow their reputation, the coffee is certainly not great, food is quite underpart. The kitchen is very slow and staff don't really seem bothered. I left feedback on the day, but nothing!

Nothing is too much trouble for the staff, they really do aim to please and go out of their way to cater for all your needs. Colby was especially helpful and even allowed us to sample a complimentary Gin!!😊

We had a fantastic wedding breakfast at Strays, the food and drinks were delicious, the manager and staff were very attentive. Would highly recommend and definitely visit again in the future

A delightful coffee shop that also serves great food and even has jazz evenings and Sundays. Menu had changed over the years but always good.

Great first visit - jacket potato with beans and cheese (on the side so you can choose how much to have - brilliant) . Filter coffee very tasty, friendly staff and good service!

First time a Strays when visiting Newark for the day. So friendly, and relaxed atmosphere. Good coffee and food too. Lucky find.

What a fabulous place to visit for a catch up with friends. We went on Sunday when they have live music which was fantastic! Very chilled atmosphere and extremely friendly and helpful staff. Plus they serve the best coffee, cake or a cheeky cocktail if you fancy one! (I especially like the Pina Colada!🍹). Let’s support these great independent, local businesses, we are so lucky to have them!!

What a wonderful surprise! Strays transformed to a little jazz club ! Came to see Matt Ratcliffe and band last night - superb music - fantastic atmosphere and such friendly, attentive young staff. 5 stars all round. Thank you for a brilliant evening .
