The Alders in Newark and Sherwood

I've been coming to The Alders for over ten years. I've seen it's up and it's downs and still every so often go back and give them another chance. Today, was one of them days, considering we had 30% off posted through our door for the new menu they were offering. Everything was fine, despite the fact that it was obvious that the prices had shot up tremendously. I gave them the benefit of the doubt, thinking that maybe the quality had improved too. I was wrong. My daughters meal from the menu cost £5.29 and consisted of two fish fingers, two mini potato waffles and a small bowl of backed beans. She obviously left hungry. My partners burger and my burger cost over £19 and was bog-standard to say the least. The nicest part of the meal was the chips they used. Along with our meal, we had to endure random banging noises coming from what sounded like upstairs which startled me every time it happened due to have sensory issues because of my autism/adhd. I came here for a relaxing time, not to endure whatever that was. I could have stayed home and listened to the construction works outside my back garden if I wanted that. We had no check-back either, which I assume is a new thing considering everything else has gone down hill and half-arsed. My partner also hurt his tooth on a foreign object in his meal, to which he took it to a member of staff who said they would speak to someone in the kitchen about it, but never came back. We know the feeling though, we won't be coming back either 😬 How can they justify the prices when the quality is that bad? A coffee shop in Creswell does better burgers and they're less than half the price and double the quality! Madness! All in all, £39.80 WITH 30% off and I'm still in shock with disappointment.

Booked a table Arrived someone at table, was moved to another table 26 Next to a door cold and a draft. Waist of time booking worst table I have ever been given. I visit a lot, might be time for a change. Only thing I have to say, why was someone else at my booked table anyway. Many Thanks

Friendly staff, good atmosphere, food was served quickly and was nice and hot. Carvery very good too. Restaurant area was clean and comfortable.

Had a jacket potato with baked beans. Baked beans were drizzled on top of the criss crossed but closed potato, so i didn't need to take my socks off to count the amount of beans on top (even checked underneath in case they had fallen down the sides) Side salad was falsely advertised, as it was missing five of the key ingredients advertised. They did accommodate my request to take off cheese/butter/dressing but expected enough beans to at least wet my potato and side salad as it was written in the menu. Will not bother again.

Had steak and chips I work in food industry and the chips had been cooked serval times and also the onion rings would not recommend

Ok for a quick stop off, vegetables were not at their best on the carvery when we visited.

Love this pub/restaurant. The food was brilliant and we'll priced. They have plenty of larger seating areas. Which was pretty good because there were 8 of us. The staff were courteous and polite. The carpark was also pretty big too. The menu is pretty extensive and the prices are reasonable. Although they do get quite busy but they don't take reserved bookings for the weekends.

Staff were friendly and helpful however food service took over an hour from placing the order. No updates, we had to chase. Not hugely busy and not a big party, only 7 people and 2 were on carvery. By the time the food from the kitchen was ready the carvery was not being replenished with vegetables etc so the choices were not as fresh. Overall disappointed.

Had the carvery. It was delicious not the best carvery I've ever eaten, as the restaurant was quiet, but still very decent. Easy to find, loads of parking and the service was great.

First time we have been nice food and pleasant atmosphere.

Stopped here after hiking, food was good! We opted for the mac and cheese starter which was flavourful and my hunters chicken was good. The sausage and mash however wasn’t as nice due to a lack of flavour.

We booked a table in advance. Ordered drinks, no straws, no Appletiser. Ordered food. Waited 1 hour for it to arrive. 2 in our party had carvery that was awful by that point. Meat completely dried out. Only 1 yorkshire pudding between the 2. Veg totally tried out. Just awful.

Becky helped myself and my father find a table and was very friendly. The food was delicious as always. We shall definitely be back again soon x

We came for a nice quiet meal out to celebrate an occasion. There was a child’s event on, which we were unaware of. It was extremely loud making it unable to hear the people I was sat with speak. The order at the table was not showing many available items so at the end we ended up ordering at the bar. My burger came and it was burnt in many places. My partners tomato on his steak was black. His steak was chewy and my step daughter’s chicken wings were very dry. Overall the whole experience ruined our celebration and we will never return to this pub again. What a waste of our money!

Limited range of food available on day of visit. Meal was good value with set deals often available.

We went last Sunday for a carvery as a large group of 12 and the carvery was only luke warm. The Alders is closer to us than a Toby Carvery so we decided to try again this evening, only to be served freezing cold yorkshires like they were out of the fridge, the gammon was hard and the veg cold. The carvery server clearly was having a bad day due to his attitude towards customers, complaining he’d had to cook everything from scratch today. We made the waiter aware, and he was lovely. He took our carvery plates away and offered us food from the menu at no extra cost. My partner had the chicken kebab to which the flatbread was hard and inedible. The table next to us also sent their soup and bread back due to it being cold and the bread being hard. It’s a shame really as the waiting staff were lovely.

Food was excellent, however the service at the carvery was terrible. The staff kindly told us when the meals ordered from the menu would arrive so that we could all eat together. Despite being the first in the queue, we waited almost 10 minutes for a server at the carvery. When they arrived, there was no Yorkshire puddings, so again we waited, then there were no Pigs in Blankets that we had ordered, then when we finally had our plate of food, there was no gravy! By the time that arrived, the food was starting to get cold. When we arrived back at our table, the members of our party had already finished the meals ordered from the menu. None of the staff asked if everything was ok, probably because there were only 3 of them and because they knew how poor the carvery service was!

Great food, bexs and luis were super friendly, couldn’t do enough for us. Great recommendations they really know the menu! bringing the family back next week!

Lovely food and the friendly service is very good , nothing to much trouble for the staff even though they looked run off their feet at times . Nice pub and great staff .

Went today with family. We had 4 Sunday lunches and desserts. The chef was chatty when we were getting our food which was nice. All the staff are attentive and kind. Definitely value for money. We shall return. Thankyou 😁😁

Booked online without any trouble. Requested a quiet corner as meeting friends and we needed a good catch up! Seated where requested which was marvellous. Combination of face to face ordering at the bar and using the QR code. Very speedy service which was brilliant. Kind and polite staff, willing to help and check in. Nice atmosphere. Clean and welcoming. The 30% offer and the different daily meal deals really do make this place value for money. We will be back!

Shaun served us at the carvery today and was a delight. He went out his way to make sure all our expectations was met and even had good sense of humour. His roast potatoes was definitely something to come back for

Booked a table of 12 for a notable birthday last night. when we went to order it didn't look too busy but I asked what the wait time was, after checking we were told 30 to 40 mins, (not too bad) so we ordered and went to sit down and chat, a couple of minuets later a waitress cam to say sorry but there would be at least an hour or so wait, a bit disappointed but as we were all chatting it was OK. just over an hour late 1 waitress was bringing 12 meals out, my steak was just warm, no steak knife which I had to go an ask for, no offer of any additional condiments so again I had to aske for salt and brown sauce, not after service check was done, a couple of other people commented that there food was not practically hot, so try and find a waitress and let my meal get even colder or just eat it whilst it was war. definitely not a good experience again.

The Alders is a great place to visit if you have mobility issues. It is on one level with no steps to at the entrance. Very spacious car park with disabled parking. The staff are friendly and always willing to help.

Great Sunday Carvery, A little stingy on the meat, although very nice. Loads of vegetables, cooked spot on! All in all very nice!

Rubbish food was cold staff was moaning girlfriend had to go up twice about lemonade as it was just fizzy water this place has gone way down hill will not be coming back

Went this evening for a gathering which was pre-booked, as were a few other gatherings. The staff did not stop all evening as it was very busy, but food service was slow and we had to ask about some puddings which had been forgotten. The food was average, but it wasn’t overly expensive either. The carvery seemed a hit with a lot of customers. They just needed more staff as the 3 ladies working were over stretched, but remained very friendly and professional.

Friendly staff, really nice burgers! But....someone smoking cannabis near the main entrance! Get rid of them....they're still on your property!

My family of 10 ate here today. My meal of pie and chips came. I had about 10 chips on my plate. I complained and they gave me a few more chips. The carvery turkey which 4 people had was as dry as a bone . The stuffing was so hard you couldn’t eat it . The man behind the carving table was rude and looked so disinterested. The burgers were ok ish .Dont waste your money .

Great service from Becs & Abbie, had the new cheese a pickle sandwich with chips, sandwich was fresh and tasty and chips hot and crispy you can’t go wrong with a classic! Will be back to try some more of the new menu.

Mother in laws 80th birthday party. 8 of us, one travelling from Bristol, no problem that he was going to be late! From start to finish our visit was A1. Great service, warned of a delay with meals so they said to wait to get carvery then they would let us know when to go so we could all eat together. Team super helpful, professional and friendly. 100% recommend

Sunday carvery was superb. Meat was not dry and veggis not over cooked. Great grub. Really friendly staff, very helpful with any condiments I wanted with my meal. Cooks were very busy but still managed to serve me within good time. All in all the alders was very warm and welcoming. Recommend a visit at least once.

After finding most places close Mondays and Tuesdays in the local area we decided to dine for lunch here. The staff are very welcoming and the food was really good. Was pleasantly impressed. Definitely a recommended place in you’re visiting the area and want a quick filling lunch :)) recommend the gammon and steak and ale pie 🥧

Mega mix grill returned twice over cooked but still stone cold

Had a table reserved, so it wasn't like they weren't expecting us. Had to wait for about 10 minutes at the bar to be served because there was only one server on, and she was prioritising preparing drinks from table orders. I ordered carveries. When paying, she turned the tablet around to ask for a tip. What for exactly? I have to order myself at the bar, then go and collect my own meal. What exactly would I be tipping for? The great service of having one server on so I had to wait ages to order? I declined. Went to get meal, and fairly certain the meat portions have gotten smaller since last time we were there. We won't be rushing back.

I am writing to express my disappointment with the dining experience I recently had at your establishment. I had heard good things about The Alders and was looking forward to a pleasant meal, but unfortunately, it fell far short of expectations. To begin with, the vegetables had an extremely odd and off-putting taste, which made them difficult to enjoy. The mashed potatoes tasted artificial, as if they were made from a packet rather than being freshly prepared. The meat was, quite frankly, inedible. It was so dry and grainy that it was akin to putting sand in my mouth – a thoroughly unpleasant texture and taste. It is incredibly disappointing to have a meal where not a single element meets even a basic standard of quality. For a venue that presumably prides itself on its offerings, this experience was unacceptable. I hope you take this feedback seriously and make the necessary changes to ensure that other patrons do not have to endure such a subpar meal.

When we arrived they struggled to find our name and then we were put onto a badly lit table which made the menu difficult to read. When we ordered there was no indication on any delays to food being brought out and it took 50 minutes to cook chips. Nobody came to make us aware of delays we had to ask. The excuse was they were waiting for chips to cook is this not a standard item. The meal costed £4 more than carvery where you can get more food for the money and a better vegetable choice. For nearly £50 very dissatisfied.

We had reserved our table so this was a great idea as the pub was busy. We were immediately greeted at the door and shown to our tables. Once our party had decided what to order we had a long wait at the bar with only 1 serving. This was the only downside to our evening. The food and table service was great. The guy doing the carvery was very enthusiastic and friendly. Overall a nice evening.

Everything we asked for off the menu wasn’t available, food wasn’t cooked to how we asked for, Guinness tasted watered down… if I could leave no star rating I would! Absolutely applaud with this meal. I would not recommend at all. Avoid at all cost

This is the fourth year of spending Boxing Day with family at The Alders for their Xmas menu. From arrival to leaving the staff are so very attentive and work really hard at making you feel welcome. The food was exceptional, as always, and there is no cutting corners despite how busy they were. I truly enjoy this being part of my families Xmas tradition and will continue to book each year as they get better and better at making it special for all.

Access for person using a wheelchair was acknowledged and seated at a suitable table. Order was checked and correct, introduction to waitress. Waitress took drinks order, took photo for us, friendly and attentive. Food was brought in time, to order and hot. All looked and tasted delicious. We had a great time.

Don’t bother, go somewhere else for decent food. The Cowboy Burger was dry, with no cheese, minuscule salad, and hard chips - it was possibly microwaved up. The steak in our Surf’nTurf was tough and disappointing. And my wife’s tea took ages to arrive and was either green tea or very weak. Find a MacDonald’s.

Food was very disappointing and potions were small plate filled with very limp sad looking garnish had to ask for replacement cup as the one I was given was chipped my mums chicken dish came in an enamel dish with all the enamel coming of witch is unhygienic This is the second time I have been in this place and that was only because my first choice of venue was full but there will definitely not be a third

Everything was spot on from start to end, staff was outstanding (those who worked when I went there 15/12/24 from 12noon). A credit to the company, will be booking again, Thank-you for a stress free lunch and lovely smiling staff.

Had breakfast there was only 2 people in at the time and the food was disgusting over cook sausage under cook eggs hash browns full off fat bake beans where cold toast was good

The carvery was lovely. All three joints of meat were of good quality and cooked to perfection. Plenty to eat and all hot. Staff were lovely, the pub was nice and warm and the atmosphere was great. Will definitely go again.

Visited for a couples meal out. Drinks expensive, poor quality veg on carvery obviously been there for a while as all dried up but meat was tender. Told waiter, who didn't even acknowledge my comment about the veg, will not visit again as was like this on a previous visit but decided to try it again

Really nice carvery, very pleasant staff, service fast too considering the place at one o'clock was full. Very good place to go.

Normally all OK. This visit just not great. When I went to order I picked the lunch deal hunters chicken.and a chocolate fudge cake which meant the cake should have been 2.50 but it went on at full price and when I raised that to the staff member she had no clue, she didn't have a menu so couldn't check and no interest in sorting it out so with the queue behind me and me having raised it twice I said just forget it I will pay full price. When I got my meal it was wrong should have been hunters chicken and I got a sandwich? My friend had mac n cheese with garlic bread it was barely warm quite congealed and the garlic bread was completely burnt on one side and uncooked on the other. The server was lovely apologised and sorted it out. Pudding was fogotten about and an hour later we went and asked for it. For me was cold and stale. My friends was barely warm sticky toffee pudding that was chewy and her custard was set with a skin on top. I go regularly with my husband and we normally have a lovely meal it's the first time for my friend and she wouldn't go again she thought it was a pretty awful meal overall.
