The Grove Inn in Newark and Sherwood

Recently refurbished, food was good with generous portions at a reasonable price. Some of us tried the dirty chips and reported them as being great. No atmosphere to comment on we visited on a very quiet midweek lunchtime. However this was just what we wanted so a great first visit. Party of 4 had two curry and two burgers and left 4 empty plates :)

We've been to The Grove many times. Finding ourselves visiting Newark Hospital reasonable regularly, The Grove wasn't too far out of the way to have a spot of lunch after appointments. Not to mention, it's really handy for your Lidl shopping too. The pub itself is certainly worth a visit. Never had any issues with the food and the staff and friendly and helpful too. The menu has plenty of choice and even our fussy eating daughter has eaten there. Trust me, if ever there was a ringing endorsement, there it is...

Rob and the team work hard to deliver great service, the food's a good price and big portions.

Always love the food the only concern I have at the moment is that you cannot order everything off the menu at the table with the app for some reason all the steak dishes have been taken off the salmon dish is on you main website menu but not on the menu or the app at certain venues. The kids menu deals doesn’t work from the app either.

Cheap and cheerful place, not bad at all for good value food, only marked down a star as some chicken bits burnt on my sons wrap meal. Dirty fries were great. Definitely would visit again

We visit this pub on a regular basis. The food is always cooked to a high standard and good proportion size. The staff are friendly and nothing is too much trouble. There is a good variety of food to choose from so something for everyone at reasonable prices. We'll worth a visit

Staff really helpful, but the pub opened when drinks weren't available. Both myself and the 2 guys before me had to have their drinks delivered to the table because the pumps weren't dispensing. Biggest problem was the cold. I visited on a day when there was freezing fog and the outside temperature was -1, the heating just didn't work. I was shivering, stood it for 40 minutes and checked the radiator on the way out,it was barely tepid.

Food very good, great value, staff very friendly. I wasn't able to use my £5 off a meal for my 1st visit when I downloaded the app as the machine wasn't working .it was our two friends first time and they will definitely be back. The battered fish was lovely.

Food was fine. Prompt service. Friendly staff. 2 elements within the lounge which could be improved. 1- polite encouragement for people not to stand in the doorway smoking for 2 reasons A-unpleasant whilst eating. B-uncomfortable to walk past smokers whilst entering or leaving, could put people off visiting. 2 -The lounge where people eat with their young families is not the ideal place for groups of men to swear at the tops of their voices constantly.(why not the bar?) The ignorance is apparent when talking and short of a word they just slot in the "F" word most of the time . Happy to supply recordings and decibel readings if there is any doubt.

Like the relaxed atmosphere weather quiet or busy. Food good value for money. Landlord and staff friendly. We had the added bonus of the retronauts entertaining us. Not heard them before but would definitely see them again. They were brilliant

Foods always fresh. I only wish there was more quorn meals vegan or vegetarian.

Just had a lovely steak which was cooked perfectly and looked after by lovely staff. A very pleasant visit thank you.

We went to the Grove for my birthday celebration. Bar staff were reasonably friendly. My partner ordered Steak which was cooked perfectly to his liking. I had Hunters chicken, unfortunately the chicken breast was over cooked and completely dried out as was the BBQ sauce and cheese topping, there was no sign of any kind of moisture on the plate at all.. The bacon was cooked more like a crisp, it was black and completely charred. The chips and peas were ok. It was like the hunters chicken had been left in an oven for several hours. I was too embarrassed to complain at the time but will not be returning any time soon.

Dropped in here for a natural break and lunch. Very local oriented. As a visitor to area felt I was not welcome. I had mediocre fish and chips (Frozen fish and soggy chips) and a Peroni beer. I would not recommend.

We go every Monday as a foursome,we have a few drinks and always have a meal,Rob is an excellent landlord,we do alter some items on our set meal,but no problem for Rob or his wife so a big Thankyou for our Monday outing

The food was good. The staff very helpful. The place could do with a bit of brightening up. We were there for 5pm which seemed to be family time so a bit noisy. But the food was good.

The landlord was very accommodating when more people turned up than we were originally expecting. Sorted an extra table and seats with no problem. Really appreciated it on a busy evening.

Rob and the team never fail to accommodate us

Menu states that gin & tonics come with ice & fruit garnish if not it's free. My double gin came with just ice! Asked they said just chopping some up still didn't get any. Ordered Gluten free chicken came just with chips no salad or cheese.

Brilliant food which is amazingly good value, particularly with regular discount offers. The staff are all lovely, very friendly and attentive and there is a pleasant relaxed atmosphere.

We have eaten there a few times and to be fair there's nothing to complain about, the food is above average competitively priced run off the mill pub food with plenty of choices, plenty of drink choices too. They catered for our group of 17 diners very well although we did give them our list of food choices before hand and the service was excellent even down to paying for our own meals. Ty

Great propper pub, quiet at time we went but let in my dog and even got her a bowl of water. Sells bud light & dark fruits so smiles all round.

And as for the service #WOW never been treated so deliciously fed .And all of this for a measly £6.60 .Never in my life have I eaten chicken so tender and well cooked in a beautiful bechamel sauce with garden peas and long grain rice.At which was cooked to perfection 🥰. Well done Rob and the team and a massive thankyou to Jenna the chef and Mac the most polite young man and hardworking gentlemen on this hard day. Staff were pleasant. Football on TV in the corner. Local pub. Food was OK - Guinness was OK too! Not much to get excited about. We found two other local pubs that didn't serve food on a Sunday so ended up at the Grove. Wouldn't rush back out of choice but it served a purpose.

Stopped off here to break up a long journey on the motorway with 2 hungry children. We were greeted by Rob at the door and shown to a lovely table next to the window close to the bar. Food was absolutely beautiful so filling and great portion sizes. Nothing too much for the staff they couldn’t do enough for us. Will definitely go back again next time we are local! Thanks again to Rob and the team!

Great service and price. (The steak unfortunately was a bit like an old boot and I had to request a sharp steak knife, However for the price of the mixed grill I sucked it up). I'd definitely go there again.

I have reviewed the Grove before but I thought it deserved an update the food we had was fantastic the atmosphere great and the prices awesome you really can't get better for a local pub, great job all round.

Went with a friend on their recommendations absolutely AMAZING 45 yrs ago last time i went in 😂😂 sneaky school run the food and staff faultless found out they got 2 live bands playing to raise money this coming saturday . Would highly recommend it for a tummy delight only thing stopping 5 stars is they dont sell my Guinness....stella was as it should be though....check it out 🙄😎😍

Had a snack which was nice and the service was excellent menu was limited because there was a problem with the gas cooker but will visit again

Went for a meal with friends. Food was good but the jacket potato I ordered was very dry. They were kind enough to mix some of the orders. Table was too close to the wall so a little uncomfortable. Moved the table but it then rocked about so had to move it back. Staff very polite though.

Any pub that can accommodate for hot and fast food and drink for 16 under 14 players football team on their Christmas gathering with patience, consideration, and with a smile has my 5- star review all day long. What a friendly and efficient staff that adapted to needs and changes with no fuss and great service. Thank you, superb.

First class meal will use again

The meals for the older person are good value. 2 courses £4.75 and 3 courses £6.75 . Very quick service and polite staff.

Friendly, pretty cheap drinks by today's standards

Myself and two friends visited this pub on the Sunday of the steampunk weekend event in August this year, we had also had a trial drive down to Newark a few weeks before when we first discovered this lovely pub, thank you for making us feel very welcome on both occasions, lovely pub, lovely staff, great atmosphere and excellent food wonderfully catering for different dietary requirements. I was here when England won the quarter finals. The atmosphere was incredible and they even added another screen so more people could see it. Staff are hardworking and can’t do enough for you 😊

Booked as a stop off mid journey. Staff were extremely busy but still friendly and helpful. Food very nice and great prices. Only negative was very noisy due to football being on, would be more enjoyable being separating from those just drinking to diners

As a long standing regular who normally only has a drink, whilst on holiday I have eaten here 3 times this week. Although fairly quiet I was well looked after, politely served and in particular the Gammon steak I had was the best I have had in many a long time. Thanks!

Brilliant customer service, lovely food, staff did everything they could to make it a better experience for my younger child wether it be a big thing to the very small things like smaller knife and fork for him, well mannered definitely will be going again

Menus changed since the last time I have been in Food is still good for a pub menu New menu has a lot more choice Dog friendly which is a bonus and the main reason I go there Staff are always welcoming and more than happy to help however they can Bonus is they have a app as well so you can claim points and bonuses the more you go Well worth a Vist if you just want a nice drink in a friendly atmosphere or something cheap pub grub

Well the last time I gave a review on this place was approximately a year ago, so I thought we would try it again after the lockdown, well needles to say our food was excellent, very tasty and very well priced, this place is an absolute gem on the door step and most certainly well worth a try, this time we tried the scampi and a Mega Mixed Grill excellent 👌 and the service was just as good highly recommended.

Lovely food at reasonable price

Got this pub by googling restaurants in & around Retford,booked a table for 4 for 1pm for lunch,it was ready & waiting for us when we arrived. Staff were very helpful & friendly,it has a very comprehensive menu,we all chose something different,my sister-in-law & my hubby chose from the over 60's menu,my brother & I had the normal menu,He had some type of pie,with mash & peas ,I had the haddock & chips with mushy peas,the fish itself was tasty but the batter was dreadfully soggy,chips ok so were mushy peas,both my brother & hubby said their mash was very solid needed to be mashed with butter & milk. How much the meal was have no idea as it was my brother's treat. If ever we were in the area again would re-visit.

The side's corn on the cob that I ordered was stone cold when they came out

If I was going there for a dinner I recommend the steak or mixed grill also the jack Daniels BBQ sauce as a side
