Lovely cafe with friendly staff and genuinely home made scones etc. Well worth the short walk out of town. Good range of snacks etc and very reasonable prices.

Five of us had lunch there, and the food was awful, the corned beef pie had absolutely no flavour, the chicken burger bun was so stale, the club sandwich was nasty cheap bread, none of it was any good, and to top it off they locked the toilets as travellers had arrived and where setting up all around the cafe. My daughter used the toilet on arrival and my 3 year grandson and I wanted to go after we’d eaten but the cafe wouldn’t let me or my grandson use it, I asked where we could go and the told us that there was a loo on the park, which it turns out had been shut down for 3-4 months and everybody including the cafe knew it. I couldn’t believe how bad the food was and how badly they treated us. Never again !

Visited for lunch on a cold and windy day, the cafe was a nice shelter from the wild weather. Two adults and a two year old. Despite being busy, the service was quick and friendly. Hearty hot food - the home made corned beef pie was brilliant. Incredible value. The home made cakes and cookies etc also looked lovely, but we were too full to partake.

I stopped here for lunch mainly thanks to being able to park for free outside. Previously I'd only ever had ice cream here. The café was very busy and looked nice. Ordered corned beef pie, chips and gravy. When it arrived it was utterly swimming in gravy, to the extend it was just about overlapping off the edge of the plate! Everything was totally soaked in the gravy, which was bog standard school dinner style gravy. It ruined the whole meal. Who would think anyone would want that. Plus it made the whole dish look awful. It was like something from a bad truck stop in the 1980's. We also got a 'Bacon sandwich', with a choice of white or brown 'bread'. When it arrived it was actually a thick white bread bun with one single rasher of bacon. The bread bun was way too much for one rasher. Again it was like something from decades past. The whole thing was beyond disappointing. The Café is on my doorstep and I really wanted it to be good, but it wasn't. I won't be back.

When here today 28th January, placed an order for 3 drink (2 hot, 1 can) and also 3 food (toastie, bacon bun, tea cake) my tea cake came before any other food or drinks it was over cooked and my mouth was so dry I didn’t have a drink to wash it down with as I was still waiting for it to be made. The bacon looked as if it hadn’t even seen the pan, the toastie was lovely my son said but you can’t go wrong with that. The staff are miserable, and young so I’m guessing the owner only wants to pay minimum wage, the lady cooking to food was rude and I’m guessing a smile was out of the question for her, I saw a young girl has flip flop on which I’m sure isn’t right! The cafe itself could do with a deep clean the skirting boards were dirty the grout in the toilet filthy and the toilet seat doesn’t seen bleach in a while either. I’ve very disappointed as this use to be a lovely cafe and it’s just gone down hill over the last few years, I won’t be returning.

The customer service was beyond poor, I waited about five minutes to be asked for my order despite there being nobody in the queue. I wanted a tea and a latte. The guy asked if we were drinking inside or outside. I told him outside. He gave me a spoon with 11 on it and asked me to wait outside. I must have waited a good 20 minutes when a young lad came out with two cups, said No.11 by the time I answered he had gone around the side of the building. He came back with the two cups and walked past me. The man who served me said the customer is there and pointed at me. The lad gave me the cups. I told him his service was poor and asked if there was any sugar. His reply was, I didn't know you wanted any then he walked away. I left the coffee and Tea on the table with the Spoon. I am very disappointed with the level of service I received today.

People in the meantime were entering and getting served at the counter, the servers passed me several times whilst they were taking food to the outside tables, but still nobody came to serve, after 15 minutes I gave up and left. Visited whilst on a walk along the beach from Redcar to Saltburn. Shown as being dog friendly. Not the case. It’s only partially dog friendly. Yes they provide dog bowls and free dog biscuits but dogs are NOT allowed inside. That’s all very well when the weather is good. There is minimally covered area outside but in winter you could be very cold or at the mercy of drinking rain. Not conducive to having a pleasant meal. On the plus side it’s a lovely, spotlessly clean, cafe. If you don’t have a dog then it’s excellent. If you do then go down the road to the Zealand Cafe that really is dog friendly.

We drove over from York today (23rd August) to meet up with family for a day at the beach. My morning was quite rushed but my mother in law said to meet at Stray Cafe as they go here for breakfast quite a lot. By the time we got there it was closer to dinner and my toddler was hungry but really wanted to be on the beach. We discovered they also do food to go so we got a tuna sandwich, 2 bottles of water, a bag of crisps and a cake (sponge cake with buttercream and rainbow sprinkles) which all came to just over £10 so very good value for money. The sandwich was enjoyed by my daughter who only likes tuna sandwiches so that was a hit. The cake was a treat for me and it was so good and a very generous portion. Will definitely visit again on our next trip to Redcar.

Our first visit to the Stray Cafe, lovely little cafe on seafront, first impressions were good. It was quite busy and liked the look inside, really clean. I ordered a green tea and a flat white and two cookies, I can honestly say it was the worst coffee I have ever been served. I took it back and asked for it to be made again, a flat white is a strong two shot coffee topped with steamed milk, the young girl proceeded to tell me they only use one shot. She brought me another and didnt look happy slaming it down on the table, absoulotely shocking service. The second coffee was no better like dishwater. Felt sorry for the lovely lad who is taking orders at this pokey window squeezed amongst the display cabinet of cakes … he was working as quick as he could and polite but nevertheless disgruntled customers all waiting in the queue who just wanted coffee or ice cream but others ordering meals for several people at a time. The poor lad has to do the ice creams as well … Loads of staff at the back milling around … opening up the front windows with more space with a couple of staff when available taking orders … perhaps one doing ice cream and drinks only … after waiting 30 minutes only to have a hot chocolate was just warm milk with a touch a chocolate and a milk shake that tasted like it was loaded with 3 sugars …. Great location along the sea front …

When you talk about cafes on Teesside a couple spring to mind, but The Stray Cafe on the Redcar to Marske coast road has to be the most Iconic. I've frequented this cafe many many times over the years with my dog Ollie, a mischievous Cockapoo, after a beach walk along the stray and to just sit and watched people and the world go by, its great with a nice cuppa and a sticky bun or a piece of cake. The staff always have fresh water in dog drinking bowls for your dog and you are always made to feel very welcome. After one such walk along the beach i had lost my iPhone somewhere along the beach and called as usual into the cafe to report it lost in case anyone handed it in, The owner Ms McNeil asked what type of phone it was and upon hearing it was an iPhone offered me her phone to login to my account and track the phone, it was a race against time as the tide was coming in and the phone had been located on the beach about a mile south of the stray cafe on the beach. Thankfully we reached it just in time, thanks to this quick thinking lady. The all day breakfast that followed a traumatic morning was welcomed and very filling too and reasonably priced. I would highly recommend a visit, especially if you've got a dog and you're visiting friends and family over the Christmas period. A trip to this iconic cafe would stir up some great memories from your past without doubt as well.

Strange-tasting tea served in a mug which clearly wasn't very clean, and sitting at an outside table that badly needed a wipe, on rusty chairs. Inside the place is cluttered and messy; the floor was in need of at least a sweep. The toilet lacked loo roll - easy to laugh but a serious matter - and it's really not good that the single WC cubicle opens straight from the main body of the café and won't latch from the outside.

Not a bad little place does get extremely busy. Has seating inside and out, really good if your out for a stroll with the dogs. Often a bit of a wait due to amount of customers. Can get a bit smelly due to the cooking when the doors are shut. Food is good but some items are over priced, personally I find the tea and coffee rather poor tasting. Friendly staff and can be very welcoming. Ice creams available but not open early enough for a lot of walkers

We visit Redcar regularly and always call into the Stray Cafe for a coffee and a great. They have a large choice of sandwiches and home cooked meals along with scones and cakes for after all very reasonably priced. It's right by the sea oy a few yards from the beach so you can enjoy your meal while you watch the ship's lining up to enter the Tees estuary. The Staff are lovely and always ready for a chat.Give it a visit I know you will come back again.

Can't believe some of the comments on trip adviser, they are simply unfair. Have been dropping into the Stray for years now usually on a morning after a walk with my wife having tea & bacon butties, they are excellent with fresh brown buns & lots of bacon. Today we called a little later & my wife had a fresh home made cheese scone & I had carrot cake to die for. I am disappointed at other peoples comments as the cost for our bacon buns & tea is £6.50 the scone+ carrot cake + teas £5.80 what do some people want. In a couple of weeks we will be off to Madeira where we will have afternoon tea at Reid's Palace & I assure you the scones & Carrot cake will not be any better. Stray café keep up the good work some of us do appreciate it THANKYOU.

The place is in a good location in Redcar however some of the staff aren't so friendly. They supposedly close at 5 but my mother and her friend were asked to leave at 4.

The Stray was recommended by a friend as a nice place to meet and eat, whilst I think this cafe will be number 1 on lots of peoples list mainly because of its very reasonable prices it was a disappointment for me, I had a bacon sandwich which was a large roll with 2 slices of bacon, I felt that there wasn't enough bacon for the size of bread roll, my friend had a sausage sandwich this was a big sandwich so my friend gave me half, however, I couldn't eat it because of the low quality of the sausages, at the time of my visit this cafe was full and everyone except me looked happy with their food

Have visited The Stray Café on numerous occasions however time for a change A couple of my visits I only wanted a toasted teacake and a coffee its ended up with my partner getting his order I have had to repeatedly ask for mine and when I have received the teacake its cold due to it being forgotten about and left in the toaster No sorry when I receive it and no knife to butter it with on one hand its waitress service but then go get your own cutlery Coffee Is normally lukewarm Today Sunday 22/07/18 was decision day for me no more visits this time due to the fact obviously they had run out of butter pats instead a dish of cheap looking margarine that tasted cheap when ordering it should be mentioned that they had run out of butter .Next issue is The Stray Café is popular with dog owners nothing wrong with that and I am not in anyway holding The Stray Café for the uncontrollable dog at the next table to mine The dog was going for anybody anything that moved one stage it did not have its lead on and it wasn't muzzled nobody could fail to miss the chaos going in the outdoor seating area Staff of the Café were outside serving and clearing sorry to say the should have suggested to the dog owner to leave for various reasons safety mainly I had my 8 month great grandson with me and one step out of line with the dog towards me or the baby or anybody else incurring injury I would ask the Owner of the café why wasn't the safety of customers considered I am a dog owner myself but human life before animals

I have used this cafe for a few years now, and feel its time to write a review. As I have stopped going in. it was very nice. and over the last few months the food as gone down in Quality, the positions (chips) are getting smaller. They are to many table and chairs inside, so trying to get to a table at the back of cafe, or the toilet is impossible, if you have a pushchair or wheelchair just don’t bother trying to get inside as you won’t be able to when it’s busy. Some members of staff clearly don’t want to be there.

Always a nice cuppa but service could be better. Slow and sometimes a cafe biscuit sometimes not. Nice to stop with friends after a walk before returning home.

Popped in for a sandwich after nursery school with my 4 year old grandson. His very loud exclamations of ‘yum yum’ whilst eating his cheese sandwich said it all! Simple good food, lovely setting and really lovely staff who packed his lunch for him to take home when he couldn’t finish it and who bent over backwards to keep us both happy. Love this charming cafe!

I visit here regularly and it is just a very good cafe..visited here recently with my mum and dad. Outdoor seating is sheltered even on a bad weather day. Coffee is always good and staff are always friendly. Its a good, no frills sea side cafe. We saw people having breakfasts and they looked absolutely amazing.

Hadn't been to The Stray for over a year, decided to pop in today after a walk. The food took ages to come, but that wasn't an issue. However this gave me time to look around where I was sat, and I must say the place is really dirty. There was food splashes all over the radiator where I was sat, the walls are dirty, and the base of the lamp behind me had a layer of crud and dust on it. There was a bin close to my seat which was filthy, The floor needed a real deep clean, and was worn in parts to the point where someone could catch their footing in it and trip. I'd also noticed when I was queuing to order my food that the till area was also filthy, There was something that looked like chocolate butter cream smeared on the back of the till that looked like it had been there for days at least, and again a layer of dust. It's a very busy place, I appreciate that, and no competition around it. However I think this has made the owners complacent, and can see they will end up losing custom if they don't sort the hygiene out. I remember when it reopened and it was lovely! Now it is looking tired and worn, and in need of some TLC....but most of all a really good clean!!! I'd pop in again for a cuppa but think I'd try elsewhere for food purely because of the hygiene. I have no confidence that it is going to be any cleaner on the bits that you CAN'T see as a customer. Shame, because the panini we had was actually quite nice.

The cups on our tea were so dirty, the tray I wouldn't have let my dogs lick it, corned beef pie resembled a spam fritter, pastry so thick raw. I did not even drink from my cup., I will not be returning.

Popped in for a drink and food , lovely lady behind the bar makes you feel at ease and has no problem helping you out, but.... very pricey I think for meals that are not on the lunchtime or specials menu saying that food is nice just a wee bit pricey for me thanks tho 👍

Asked for bacon sandwich. Bought as a takeout, was handed over all wrapped up and in a bag. This is what I opened when I got home. Neither looked or smelled like bacon. Green tinged. Went straight into the bin

My favourite cafe in Saltburn. Tea, cakes, cocktails and beer. It's also dog friendly and has indoor and outdoor seating. What's not to like.
