This is a lovely hidden gem in the heart of Plymouth Barbican. Worth it for the views across Sutton Harbour from a historically interesting house alone (especially from upstairs). The main feature however is the excellent and tasty snacks, lunches and teas. I gather all the food is locally sourced and all prepared on site. Sit back and enjoy! We turned up with a family group of 14 (!) and were welcomed pushchairs and all. Food was served very promptly and was delicious and in huge portions. Great value too and good old fashioned service. Try it!

A little place tucked away that you would normally walk past but don't. Lots of nicknacks and lovely little things fill this place, a few tables in one area and more going through the cafe. The staff are so friendly and efficient. The cook makes homemade scones and the soup we had was superb. The tea was served in lovely little cups from a real teapot. Keep up the good work girls it was a pleasure going into your little shop, a wonderful experience.

Lovelly little place. More seating one floor up. Had the BEST scones I have EVER eaten here. Waitresses really nice. Got served a bit more than I thought I asked for so a bit more expensive than calculated. Upstairs seating nice and clean but a bit worn down in the back room. Lovelly un-matching cups and pots.

The present management are much better than their predecessors. This is a fairly good little cafe. The site isn’t bad, in the heart of the buzz of the Barbican BUT for what seems to be going to be a very long time builders have just reacted a large steel secure enclosure occupying the whole of the previous seating and open space between the cafe and the main road and blocking the view and creating a moderately claustrophobic effect. The yard is being used to store materials and plant equipment for the long delayed work on the old Tudor terraced house near the bottom of New Street.

Myself and my partner visited today with our friends (another couple) for a cream tea. We found a delightful and cosy tea room with all the trappings of a 'proper' tea room like the decorative saucers on the beams and novelty salt and pepper shakers on the tables. The menu is simple but covers all tastes, the options are reasonably priced. We all enjoyed a cream tea but home made hot food was available also. We made several requests for minor alterations to menu options like swapping the jam for a different preserve and the friendly staff were quick and happy to accommodate. Service was quick and the scones were amazing. They came with generous amounts of cream and jam and were just the right size, options for one or two scones are available both with a pot of tea for one. We were also happy to find they accepted card, a small detail but makes it much more convenient if you're out and about. I look forward to visiting again and trying some more of the food, tea, and cakes on offer. Thank you!

We decided to stop here for just a drink and a cake. We only had three drinks and two cakes, but sadly there was a mistake with just about every item we received. My husband's hot chocolate which should have been served with whipped cream and marshmallows just arrived as hot milk with a tad of chocolate powder in it. For £3.20 that did not seem like very good value. My son ordered a brownie, ie just a cake. It arrived in a bowl with a spoon and it was hot. The guy asked us if we wanted cream or custard on it. He replied no, he just ordered a cake. Obviously they had thought he had ordered a pudding for some reason. My tea cake was the final straw. Not a teacake, but two slices of currant bread put together and it was burnt. We just did not know what to say. We pointed it out to the waiter who just kept apologising. At the end we had 20p knocked off our glass of hot milk. It truly was awful and I am really sorry to have to say that, but it was. It was a joke and the place was grubby and the poor guy serving seemed flustered, but there were only two other people in there.

Imagine England in the 1920's. i had come down from Oxford to visit my mum who lives near Saltash. We had had great time looking at all the galleries and antique shops around the Barbican. We were hungry and did not fancy fish n chips. My mum pointed out the Teahouse, at first hand unassuming. We hesitated and then walked in. And we became aware quickly that it was a treasure trove. Balanced around little shelfs were examples of the finalist English tea sets. Lots of happy customers were chatting away, some sounded German, who were in love with the timeless quality of the Teahouse.

I came here about two weeks ago with a friend who was visiting from Germany. As she never has had cream tea before in her life, I was looking forward to showing her some nice scones and English tea. As we were in the Barbican and this Café came up on Trip Advisor, we thought of giving it a go. While she thought it was okay, I was actually a bit disappointed. The scones were not great at all and the tea we ordered didn't get served. When we mentioned the missing tea to the staff, they were very friendly though and quickly brought our tea. However, we had already finished our scones by then.

While on holiday in Devon we visited one of our favourite places, Plymouth. Fancying a light snack, and with a traditional Devon Cream Tea in mind, we chanced upon The Strand Tea Rooms which had just been taken over the previous week by new and very enthusiastic owners. We popped in to what looked like a tiny little tea shop and asked if they had anything wheat/gluten free. "Just gluten free bread and a few different kinds of cakes," the lady said. Seeing as the tea shop mainly did cakes and sandwiches we thought that was quite good and my friend enjoyed being able to eat the same as us, especially her yummy prawn sandwich. Surfaces were wiped before her meal was prepared with fresh utensils but the lady made us aware that the kitchen was also used for wheat. All fine with her level of allergy.

Looks great from the outside and I don't mind the cluttered quirky look inside. I didn't expect posh but waitress was young and spoke not different to what you'd expect in a roadside truckers cafe in Dover. (I like greasy spoon cafes by the way). It was expensive, the tea was nice, the scones were too. My wife said the butter had a cheesy taste to it (I thought it was ok). I would have thought it an impossibility to deliver a poor milkshake, wrong. I choose a coffee milkshake, described as an ice cream milkshake. Firstly no ice cream at all just milk and secondly it had no and I mean no hint of flavour. I am not a complainer at all but said something, and they were fine about it and added a hint more. The milk was room temperature and still had hardly any coffee flavour. So they are masquerading as this step back in time experience and serving average food, with average service at a high price.

Really wanted to have fresh crab sandwiches for lunch, this place looked ideal in a quirky vintage way. Ordered 3 crab sandwiches at £6.95 each, was offered brown or white bread - should have offered us mothers pride or hovis! 2 slices of medium sliced bread with a side slald / garnish of 2 pieces of iceberg lettuce, smal lemon wedge and a smaller tomato wedge which had come straight from the fridge so completely without flavour! For £6.95 I expected fresh crusty doorstops of white or wholemeal bread and if your'e going to bother with a salad garnish then at least put some effort in to it or don't bother at all! We all felt rather ripped off and very disappointed.

Very cluttered and looked if the place could do with a good clean. Very tacky bits and pieces in the window, the knitted sweets and cake looked if they could do with a good wash or better still to be thrown out. Plastic tablecloth and cups were well worn, the gold rim around the top of the cups hardly visible. Going to the loo was an experience, whole place needs refurbishing. Looked forward to my crab sandwich and costing £6.50 was expecting something really yummy. What a let down! Bread tasted around 3 days old and was from a normal cheap sliced loaf rather than one you cut yourself for nice fresh doorsteps, not a lettuce leaf in sight. I wouldn't recommend this cafe at all. Had the feeling that the waitress expected to keep the change for a tip, the snack costing £12.80 which was 2 teas, one crab sandwich and one toasted tea cake, gave her £15 so i waited for my change and she looked surprised, in the end she had 40p tip, too much in my eyes, but she did well to get that. Fun to read the little posters (perhaps not "politically correct these days") and learn a bit of history if you want to. We have visited several times (this our first review) and always enjoyed good service and food / drink.

I came to the tearoom with my family late morning and was served by a very friendly and helpful waitress, she was very chatty and the service was prompt. The cake was delicious and tea was served in very pretty china.

The tea room is across from the Aquarium. The place is small but decorated with lots of tea sets, pictures and plates. Rather pretty. The staff was nice and prompt. Do visit the tea room early!

This is a lovely little cafe in the Barbican area of plymouth in a listed building. The decor is chintzy with wall plates and tea pots and tea is served in proper teacups and teapots. The staff are friendly and efficient and although it is busy the food appeared quickly and was very hot. We had a light lunch of soup and pasties which were lovely. We returned later for tea and scones.

Again I went to this place with family who came down from London and as they had seen this little place on previous visits they asked us what it was and decided that they wanted to try it out and loved it alot as it is very quaint and very olde worldie, the cream teas are just as lovely and they do other things to like sandwiches and minimal hot food for their modest size. Would recommend this little place to anyone after a little old fashioned time out from shopping

We didn't actually get to sample the cream tea we'd gone in for! We were met by a very surly waitress who informed us abruptly that we could have tea however would have to be out in 20 minutes as she was planning to close! This was at 3pm! Needless to say we took our business elsewhere.

Ci siamo fermati per una pausa al volo, locale old style e personale sbrigativo. In sintesi diciamo che ci si può fermare anche se non è niente di eccezionale con prezzi medio bassi.

Been in this tea shop a lot of times on the Barbican,it is situated just back a few yards from the very front facing the water, it appears very old on purpose, alot of ornament etc around and old fashioned service meaning china cups and saucers, tea cosy, well l like that, its different then your tea in a metal pot or from a machine, quite a few seats in there going through to the back more, that is my usual place for a cuppa and cake when on the Barbican and will continue to be so, The staff are lovely,it is quaint.alot of you will like this sort of tea room if not there are plenty modern ones there, but we are on the Barbican, goes well with the surroundings.

Love it in here, pretty cups and saucers , crochet tea cosies and pretty cushions. Just like your Granny's house which is lovely. Makes a change from the boring chain coffee shops. My daughter loved the banana milkshake. Great location.

Lovely cream tea, relatively quick service and beautiful china. The one thing that put us off a bit was the manageress and the waitress arguing next to us.

Great drinks and food in here, and you can check out the bikes at gts that they sell as well. Some of the staff could do with talking to the customers when being served.

Went for the Sunday carvery today. The atmosphere was very friendly. All the staff were great and we had a banter with the chef which was a nice change from someone just giving you food . The food was hot and tasty. We would Recommend anyone to try it . We Will definitely go again ! Tracey & Paul
