Ok, the décor is rather 80s/90s, but don't let that put you off coming here for a meal. I found the service to be good, the food well prepared and presented and the taste very good

Un hermoso y pequeño restaurante indio. Comida maravillosa.

The food was absolutely tasteless. We got the chicken curry which tastes like pre-made tomato paste with chicken pieces. If you like very mild flavoured curry without spices you might like this. But there are much better options save yourself from an this awful food.

This place has no idea what Indian food is.!! I wouldn't want to write a bad review but this place deserves it and more. I landed up for a take away and it was an hour before I could leave the place with the food. The food was so awful that it had to be thrown away. We ordered a butter chicken , spicy chicken curry ,rotis and rice. The worst Indian dish ever in the whole world was the butter chicken.!! Taxi yellow in colour, sweet as in payasam or kheer(Indian sweet dish) it was a disaster !Imagine chucking in a few pieces of chicken into a bowl of sweetened cream!Man ,the chef is from another planet surely!.The spicy chicken was terrible. No spice ,no flavour ...was disgusting. The rotis are made of maida and tasted like crumbling pizza...The papads were rice papads or appalams like in south india not in North indian cooking. The restaurant had diners who were presumably the local population and I really hope that they do taste what real Indian or Pakistani food tastes like and UK might have a few great restaurants. It is even called Star of Bombay !!Really!

Promosso

The Star of Bombay is a wonderful restaurant within walking distance of Portobello Road. It's a very welcome place to eat lunch if you are returning from the market. I often stop here after a very busy morning perusing antiques, and would on this occasion choose to mention the very friendly and hospitable service I received today. Restaurant claims to offer a set lunch for less than £10 but I didn't see the menu for that. I was hungry anyway so ordered from the main menu. Butter chicken, plain rice and a cheese naan. All very well presented and flavoursome. A very enjoyable meal. Service was added incorrectly but as it was only a matter of 30p I chose to ignore it. A very nice place to enjoy a fine Indian meal.

We visited the restaurant for the first time in January after living in the neighborhood for the past 5 years. We never thought of popping in as it always looks quite empty, even on the weekends, which is not a great sign. Once you enter the restaurant, the decor is fairly dated, it feels like stepping back in time to 1960s. However, we were very surprised by the quality of the food... They serve authentic, delicious (often quite spicy) and not expensive Indian food! Since our first visit in January, we have been eating there every 2 weeks, trying different dishes and have been very impressed! I would highly recommend this restaurant for a casual meal! By the way, we learned that they have been there for the past 60-years, which is impressive for Notting Hill!

This was somewhere we decided to visit due to its good reviews on this site. We were not disappointed... The place looked "old school" family run and the food was amazing.Be Warned, the Onion Bhajis are massive :)I had the lamb dopiaza and it was great, more than happy to visit again. Only surprise was the 12.5% service charge that was automatically added to the bill.

Had a quite substantial meal delivered from Star Of Bombay and what a mistake it was. A mix of way too salty pieces of meat and a curry which tasted mainly of burnt oil, not to mention the cold industrial naan. I've had my fair share of Indian food in London and this was by far the worst, truly shameful.

As I came in on Sunday evening, the only other diners, a German couple, were paying their bill. I ate alone in this quite large and airy restaurant while the 3 or 4 servers amused themselves with hearty conversation in Bengali. I ordered conservatively, but did not expect my dishes to be as bland as they turned out. But I have eaten a lot worse. They have a short but well priced wine list by the bottle, but very limited choice (in small bottles) by the glass. This unambitious place is a throwback to the seventies, would be a good choice for a quiet meal if you order it more spicy than you intend to eat. Prices are extremely reasonable.

Having lived in Notting Hill for 2 years, my wife and I are now moving to South London and we will miss the Star of Bombay.... badly! This is a great curry house. Full of character, mainly because of the dated décor, but I think this is a good thing. It's what makes the Star of Bombay what it is. The food is excellent, especially the Sizzling Chicken chef special. It's a real shame that we are now going to live too far away to visit for a regular Friday curry.

Okay so if you are looking for ice cream that tastes of Marmite, or artistic presentation then this is probably not your restaurant. If you are looking for incredibly welcoming and friendly service and wonderfully old school Indian then please go here. As I have said the service is wonderful, we went for my sisters birthday (not the usual choice for an event like this, but her choice) and they couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating. I really do love this place and I think you have to go in and think that its not going to be Michelin star but it is good quality and a nice atmosphere. One negative, the wine is horrendously expensive and they could look at changing that or adding a BYOB policy, the beer was very well priced.

A very average Indian restaurant and a bit pricey with a meal for two including drinks costing £70 with service on the bill. Food had think sauces and when I am eating in this area again I would rather have a Nando's or Gourmet Burger which are down the road. If you want a good Indian meal head to East London or Southall. I am unlikely to return here.

Despite all the negative reviews, I decided to drop by my the Star of Bombay to check it out.Decided to order and grab a takeaway as I know that the interior deco is not exactly very up to date/welcoming.In anycase, I ordered a vegetable danksa and a darl tarka. The plus sides are that the portions are big and the curry sauces are very rich and flavorsome. The downsides are the vegetable dansak - none of the vegetable dishes were made of fresh veg - they used frozen peas, greb beans, sweetcorns - not really authentic Indian ingredients I would say in a curry dish. The Darl was okay.I won't be going back there again!

Naan buonissimo e incredibilmente leggero.Purtroppo non siamo riusciti a provare nessun dessert.Consigliato.

When one is a vegetarian it is often hard to find good selections of vegetables so we were particularly pleased to see the variety on offer here. We made a very good meal from a mixture of the aubergines, veggie korma and the spinach and mushrooms, along with a very good egg pilau. Everything was flavourful and excellent. The ambience is good and we especially appreciated the absence of loud music. Will eat here again next time we are in the area.

We came on this part of town for the taqueria nearby, but it was full and we were very hungry so we just went for it. Frankly at first it looks like one of the "Kitchen Nightmares" restaurants: forniture out of the 70's (quite literally I think) and the room doesn't seem too clean in itself. The food, we were surprised to discover, is really good. I had a chicken byryani and my boyfriend had a chicken korma and they both were excellent, the portions don't seem much but there's more than meet the eye in those little silver platters. It was very satisfying and not too expensive too, would gladly eat there again!
