A Culinary Adventure at Bugis Kitchen: A Taste of Southeast Asia in London Tucked inside the elegant Copthorne Tara Hotel in London Kensington, Bugis Kitchen is a hidden gem offering a delightful journey through the rich and diverse flavours of Southeast Asia. During our visit, we indulged in a variety of dishes that left our taste buds singing. Here’s a detailed account of our culinary adventure. Starters: A Promising Beginning Chicken Satay Our meal began with the Chicken Satay, featuring corn-fed chicken skewers served with cucumber, red onion, and a spicy peanut sauce. The skewers were perfectly grilled, tender, and flavorful. The accompanying peanut sauce added a rich, nutty depth that complemented the freshness of the cucumber and the sharpness of the red onion. Mongolian Prawn Next, we tried the Mongolian Prawn. This dish featured succulent prawns in a light batter, stir-fried with a sweet and savoury sauce infused with a hint of black pepper. The prawns were delightfully crispy on the outside while maintaining a juicy interior, making it a standout starter. Mains: A Feast of Flavors Chicken Curry Malay Style For the main course, we savoured the Chicken Curry Malay Style. This dish showcased tender chicken pieces cooked in a blend of authentic Malay spices, with okra, potatoes, red chilli, and coconut milk. The curry was rich and aromatic, with a perfect balance of spice and creaminess that made it incredibly satisfying. Beef Rendang The Beef Rendang, a slow-cooked beef stew with coconut milk and spices, was another highlight. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the complex flavours of the stew were deeply comforting. This dish is a must-try for anyone who enjoys robust, hearty flavours. Chilli Crab A visit to Bugis Kitchen wouldn’t be complete without trying the Chilli Crab. The whole crab was braised in a spicy-sweet egg gravy that was simply irresistible. The sauce was so delectable that we eagerly mopped it up with the accompanying Mantou Buns, not wanting to leave a single drop behind. Char Kway Teow The Char Kway Teow was a delightful stir-fry of flat rice noodles with egg, prawns, beansprouts, a hint of chilli, and sweet soy sauce. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the dish had a wonderful smokiness from the stir-frying process, known as "wok hei." Nasi Goreng Our final main was the Nasi Goreng, a flavorful fried rice served with satay, shrimp, peanut sauce, prawn crackers, and a fried egg. This dish was a delightful mix of textures and flavours, with the peanut sauce adding a rich creaminess to the perfectly cooked fried rice. Desserts: A Sweet Ending Bubur Cha-Cha For dessert, we sampled the Bubur Cha-Cha, a dish of taro, sweet potato, and pearl sago infused with coconut milk. The dessert was pleasantly sweet and had a comforting, creamy texture that was quite enjoyable. Red Bean Sago Lastly, we tried the Red Bean Sago, a red bean sago infused with coconut milk. While I didn’t personally enjoy this dessert, my wife found it quite palatable. The unique texture and flavour combination may be an acquired taste for some. Service and Atmosphere The service at Bugis Kitchen was exceptional, with Abbas ensuring we had a memorable dining experience. Additionally, all the meat served at the restaurant is Halal, catering to diverse dietary preferences. Final Thoughts Bugis Kitchen offers a vibrant and authentic taste of Southeast Asia in the heart of London. From the rich and spicy curries to the sweet and savoury seafood, every dish is a testament to the region’s culinary heritage. If you find yourself in London Kensington, a visit to Bugis Kitchen is a must.

Just wanted to share my opinion of this place. I recently went on a bussines trip and stayed in the hotel. I was impressed by the general ambiance and it doesn't get exceptionally busy. Me and my colleague shared some dishes but what I wanted to emphasize was how well we were treated by the waiter there. I was suprised there was only one person working there but end of the day we were satisfied with the service provided.

WOW talk about deceptive pictures by the restaurant! We ate there on Saturday night around 9pm Yes the restaurant décor does look like the pics but this was let down by the fact that three tables were left not cleaned. In their defence they only had two people on duty (clearly the restaurant is trying to squeeze as much money as they can) doing everything for the entire restaurant which got a bit busy! Still at some point you do need to clear and clean the tables. There was a 8 seater table next to us which for the duration of our dinner was never cleaned. Very poor service. Now the food: 1. Chicken dumplings. The pastry was extremely thick with very little filling. 2. Aromatic duck- crisp to the extreme, you needed a chisel to break it up. 3. Hoison sauce - like tasteless tar. 4. Spring rolls (vegetable) sadly missing the vegetable! To be honest Iceland does a great value Chinese meal. Its better value and tastes far better. Overall a bad experience! Would I go back- Never.

Service is friendly. I had the Laksa and the Hainan Chicken Rice, which I think are the most Singaporean dishes on the menu. Chicken rice was so-so: the rice lacked flavour and the broth was a bit thin. But the Laksa was superb - full of prawns and sliced fish balls bean sprouts and decent noodles - and reasonably priced at 16 quid for a big big bowl. Broth was rich and spicy but not too much (could have taken a little more heat). I didn’t really need two dishes. If you are in the area or staying in the Tara Copthorne this place is worth a try.

Table not cleaned after previous occupant, with dried food and glass stains on it even though there was fresh cutlery and drinking glass. Although only a couple of tables were occupied I was not shown to a seat and after a wait of about 15 minutes was asked if I was ready to order even though I had not been given a menu. I chose sweet and sour chicken and was asked what rice I wanted with it but not told that this was not included in the price of the meal. When I came to pay I found it was £5 for a very small bowl of fried rice. Exorbitant even by London standards. The wine I requested was out of stock and my second choice did not arrive until about 10 minutes after my meal was served (on cold plates). Only two waiting staff that I could see and one appeared to be in training. Not good enough in a restaurant attached to what is supposed to be a 4* hotel but, in fact out did Fawlty Towers in attitude and service. See my review on Copthorne Tara for fuller details.

4.5 rating. All the Asian entrees we had are on point. Nasi Goreng, Mi Goreng, Laksa, chicken rice are excellent. Seafood horfun was delicious but didn’t have as much gravy as I would get from a hawker center in Singapore. For dessert, we had the glutinous black rice soup which was good and fried banana fritter which didn’t quite taste right as plaintain was used. Also both desserts were presented with strawberry ice cream which doesn’t quite match. All in all a good authentic taste restaurant.

Our family comes from the Far East and decided to check out this restaurant as we're sceptical over the high ratings given by TA contributers. Our family of 4 adults had an early dinner on a Saturday night. The restaurant wasn't busy at all. The salt and pepper spareribs were too oily which means poor control of temperature of oil for deep frying or deep frying more than once. We had seabass fillets with black beans sauce, sautéed beef with black pepper sauce, stir fried kai lan (broccoli ),stir fried long beans with minced meat and sautéed prawns. All were average at best and were lacking in depth of flavours. Our order of 1 additional bowl of white rice took a relatively long time to be served. Prices are slightly higher with smaller portion sizes compared to the average Chinese restaurant.

Check in was atrocious. Having arrived early in the day I confirmed my reservation and was told my room would be ready at 2.pm. My partner arrived at 3pm after a long journey and the room was still not ready. This, despite numerous people arriving and checking in as their rooms apparently were readily available. It was gone 5pm when I was eventually given a room and only then as someone offered me their room as they could see I was ready to explode. This meant that a dinner appointment had to be cancelled as I was attending a show in the West End later on. I was met with numerous explanations and apologies and told "We are rather Busy", their problem, not mine. Room was fine as was food, bar service very poor. Will NEVER stay there again.

The advantage of a restaurant inside a hotel ought to be flexibility for the guests to eat - not so. Besides the lack of room service, which is perhaps forgivable (I went myself to get a take-away nasi goreng the first night, which was decent), the other thing you expect is for them to respect some set opening and closing times - or at least the sacred rule that once you accept patrons, you give them service. After a long day my wife and I decided to eat here and walked in at 2100 and ordered dinner. By the time we had finished our soup starters, the other guests had finished their meals and started leaving, so that when the mains arrived the waitress promptly brought us the bill as well without asking if we wanted desserts, while her colleagues started shutting up shop. The boorish behaviour was unfortnately mirrored in a pretty tasteless peking duck I was served. Ultimately if they can’t be bothered to welcome patrons they shou;d turn them away at the door, as the food is very pricey (too much) and they charge just as though you’d had a proper dining experience.

Even given the recent favourable reviews on TA, we were a little apprehensive - chain hotel restaurants are notoriously hit-and-miss.. add to this that my better half is not a huge fan of Chinese-style food in the first place..But in short - it was a delight. Our meals were hot, fresh, and prepared with genuine skill. The dishes are generally simple; but those we had were masterfully executed. The Hainanese chicken (with rice) was delicately flavoured and succulent, and the accompanying clear soup is a very nice touch. The punchy ginger and chilli sauces on the side were excellent too.Service was every bit as good as the food - professional, knowledgeable, courteous, friendly - all at just the right level... very many thanks to Denzel and Lilian for looking after us so very well!In fact, we enjoyed it so much we went straight back the next day for the set-lunch menu... where the Hokkien Mee was a lovely, velvety, noodle dish.I didn't mention the decor - hardwoods, red lanterns, mood lighting... plenty of room between tables too. Good stuff. All in all, a cut above what we'd been expecting, and just what we needed at the end of a holiday. We will return!

I had dinner here after a long day tour. I ate here because it is inside the hotel where I'm staying. I just walked in with my backpack and a bottle water. When the waitress took my order, she had a strange look on her face (like I did something wrong), she look at my bottled water strangely when she asked if I want anything to drink. I said no I am okay I will just finish my bottled water and she gave the same strange look like there is something wrong. Little do I know I wasn't aware that I'm not suppose to bring it to the table and drink it. As soon as she walked away after she took my order, her manager approached me. She can barely speak in English properly and politely. She pointed at my bottle water and said I can't drink my bottle water. She didn't even say I am sorry or I apologize unfortunately we do not allow any drinks that are not from our restaurant. As simple as that no bid deal. I was fine with it why is it such a hassle for them. The waitress saw me before she should have just told me from the very beginning before she gave me a table. I would understand and put it away. Instead she has to make such a big deal like I committed a crime. They are lack of professionalism and totally clueless how to communicate with customers. And the food is not that great either. So it is a thumbsdown.

WE only had a limited time to eat before we had to get our train back to Lancashire. We were in the company of our son's in laws who are Chinese Malay and eat here quite a lot.Our food chosen was the lunch buffet inc Laksa soup, belly pork, Singapore noodles and the like. The food was well presented wonderful in taste and appearance. We had jasmine tea to accompany the meal and the attentive staff could not do enough for us. The whole meal was excellent value, wholesome and very tasty. I would recommend eating here and will definitely be back next time we visit South Kensington.

Had dinner here as part of our stay in the hotel. Food was really nice and staff very helpful. We were not sure of what to eat and the waiter helped us with the specialities. We ordered sea bass and some king prawns with rice. It was all very good. Price is very good so totally value for money.

We visited this very upscale restaurant purely as we were staying in the Tara Hotel, but it is so good, we would have willingly travelled out to it.An elegant, almost 'clubby' colonial decor with elegant and well spread out tables. The service is elegant and courteous. The food is wonderfully authentic and as well as a good selection of westernised dishes, there is a menu section offering authentic ethnic dishes. These are amazingly good, and we enjoyed a good selection. The ambience would be improved by linen napkins, and the Italian house white is best avoided.Save those two niggles we enjoyed a wonderful two hour supper, and our second bottle, the Australian Pino Grigio was very palatable, if somewhat overpriced, as is the entire wine list, but then this is a four star hotel in Kensington.

Across the street from the Holiday Inn Kensington Forum and near Gloucester Road tube station this restaurant is quite easy to reach. The food is of good quality. Some native Singaporeans or Malaysians may disagree of course, but it is as authentic as you can get in this part of London. There's a decent selection of food and I always seem to end up ordering the Taiwanese chicken hot pot. Contains: chicken :-), mushrooms and tons of garlic. Very recommended. Also if you want a nice sugar rush there's a great desert called "gula melaca" which is tapioca with plam sugar syrup and coconut milk. Very nice. Prices are decent and the staff always attentive but perhaps it is because we do go every time we're in London and chat them up. My recommendation for good service is if they are not busy to chat them up a bit and not bark orders at the staff. Works wonders.

Trecked across town to eat here quite late at 22:00 on the fact that they advertised to be open until 22:30 only to be told they closed early. Spoke to front desk who tried to explain that 22:30 was closing them, and not when the kitchen closed. I expect much better from a hotel of Thai stature. Very poor.

This restaurant is hidden in a hotel.. The Chinese food is honestly some of the best Chinese food we have ever had. We enjoyed a set menu which was £20 each but well worth every penny.. Starter, mains and pudding. Highly recommended.

First and foremost this is a tourist grade hotel restaurant. So within that context, Bugis Street is great. Good range of Asian cuisine and pleasant ambience. But it's a very British hotel dining room serving Asian food. It was quite busy and the food is inexpensive. Alcohol is quite ridiculously expensive at £5.50 for a small bottle of Tiger beer. But that's London. Prawn toast and Laksa was about £15. Service and a couple of beers brought the bill to almost £30. But the food was good so I am not complaining. And the set menu options for people from £20 to £22 for two is really good. Service was ok, varying between surly to intrusive, but they did their best. Happy to eat here again whether staying in the hotel or not

Had a banquet "Peking" here last night with 7 others 20 pounds each food was very good we also had Chinese tea which ended up being a rip off as they charge you for the tea and also per cup. we were going to leave a tip but this rip off changed my mind. Also made sure that they took off the "optional" 10% service charge from the bill which was 15 pounds so watch out for that as well when paying. It was ashame bill caused problems as the food was very good.

Since we were staying in this hotel, we were very tired after being at wimbledon all day so we decided to see if we could get a meal in the restaurant linked to our hotel. We were given a seat immediately. The food was lovely, I ordered chicken noodle soup then sweet and sour chicken with boiled rice. My friend ordered chicken sweetcorn and a sort of chow mein dish. We both loved our meal. My sweet and sour was cooked lovely and the chicken coating was very crunchy but lovely. It was quite expensive as it was after 5pm. They do a deal up until then which is good value for money so our meal was a bit more expensive.

Used this restaurant five times over last two years and 'in-hotel food' for the price is very good. The service is excellent but recommend booking as it can get busy. No problem recommending this to the traveller who does not wish to search for better.

One of the most notable things about this restaurant is that all the staff are obviously of Asian origin and understand the products that they sell. Similarly, most of the customers are of Asian extraction and one can see quite a lot of families and business people using the restaurant. It is great value and offers food that tastes fresh and very good. Our most recent visit was the third time we have eaten there and we have not been disappointed yet. As in all good restaurants, sometimes when you leave you feel that have eaten too much - that is not the restaurant's fault and it is a credit to the quality and taste of their food.
