We visit London often and like to try different restaurants. We have since L'Etranger before and decided to try it on our recent visit. We were no disappointed. The service was quick and the staff were friendly. Our dinner was very tasty. We went on a Friday night and we are glad we made a reservation as they were busy. The only con was that the nice bottle of wine we ordered took a while to chill and the server kept running back and forth to check on it and serve it to us, finally it was ready and he bought it to the table but not in a chill bottle.

The food for the most part was superb, well presented and very tasty. The pak choy (apparently what we call bok choy) had so much of a garlic taste that we could not eat it, and in general garlic is one of my favorite tastes. My wife has a negative reaction to garlic, in general.) Also, we were never asked about our experience by the staff, so we had to bring this up on our own. We had asked if that dish had garlic and were told it did not, so it was confusing to us. They did not charge us for that item when we complained. Their ratatouille was amazing.

El menú de degustación fue una experiencia agradable. La mozzarella de búfala con tomate y helado de albahaca es una ensalada de la boca. Had a wonderful anniversary dinner here! Excellent wine, delicious food lovely service! I had the lobster ravioli with a lovely bisque for starter and my husband had the scallops. Gorgeous! For our mains we had the duck and fillet of beef with sumo polenta chips. Luscious!! I'm not really one for dessert but I had the raspberry sorbet and chilli ginger cheese cake. Divine!! I started with squid with chilli - living up to its reputation of Japanese-influenced French cuisine. I then had the welsh lamb on ratatouille - which was moist and full of flavour and finished with a cheese cake and sorbet once again bursting with flavour. My only disappointment was that we had to rush our meal as we were due at the Royal Albert Hall - but the staff accommodated this including organising a taxi for us - and I look forward to returning again with more time on our hands and an opportunity to explore their extensive wine list.

Staff were arguing when we made booking and when we were eating you could see the friction among them.I ordered artichoke soup and the waiter said mushroom soup and I repeated the order. On being served the soup the manager said mushroom soup but the soup was artichoke soup. The soup was cold. There was no mushroom soup on the menu. The main were served on cold plates and the food was not hot.The sommelier was very good and cleared our plates and took our dessert order as the other two male staff were not to be seen.We paid a lot of money to eat at this restaurant and would not recommend it.

We chose this restaurant for a celebratory night out and weren't disappointed. The heritage tomato starter with its basil sorbet and truffled burrata was an inspired take on the old staple of a caprese while the lobster ravioli was equally enjoyable -- and cooked perfectly al dente. The black cod was moist and tasty. If there was disappointment it was with the truffled chicken breast. I was seduced by the smell of white truffles the moment I entered the restaurant, but the chicken was overwhelmed by pepper -- no sense of truffle there at all.The wine list was extensive and reasonably priced. The service was attentive but not at all oppressive. Altogether an excellent choice.

I went to the restaurant with a friend. I booked through internet. I was intrigued by the name. we were warmly welcomed by the French sommelier. The wine list is amazing. I wish I had the budget to afford some incredible wines. But the sommelier suggested excellent and affordable wines by the glass. The tasting menu was very good, especially the fish dishes. In fact when we came to the meat, we were no longer hungry as the servings are very (too?) generous. The service was attentive and efficient. What a surprise to hear a recording of the French novel L'étranger from Albert Camus in the toilets! We had then the proof that the restaurant was named by Camus' novel. I'll make two reservations though: the music played in the wine room where we were was loud and totally inappropriate for the place. The director was unpleasant too (he pretended to tone down the music when we asked but did not). That spoilt somehow the atmosphere. But this place is worth trying.

I wish I could give this place zero stars. We had made reservations for lunch. We booked it through their website. I received a confirmation email saying everything is good to go. We get there and the restaurant is closed. I email them and they did email me back. But it was only to find out that they don't usually do a lunch service and tried to offer us complimentary drinks even though I had told them we were leaving London that night. Here's a tip, maybe change your website and reservation system so that you can't make a reservation for a time when you're not opened. This was our last lunch before heading to the airport to leave. We came across this unusual French/ Japanese restaurant in Gloucester road one Saturday evening and were able to get a table. We went into a quiet, cool atmosphere (from a warm evening) decorated in dark shades not sure of what to expect and unaware of the reviews on Trip Advisor. Walking in we had a warm welcome and a helpful, professional Russian waiter who spoke perfect English showed us to our table. We chose the set menu of three courses at £35 and there was also a choice of three wines for each of red, white, rose and Champagne by the glass. We managed a couple of glasses of very acceptable red with our meal. Although the actual wine list was superior and very extensive. Everything was all beautifully prepared and presented and quite delicious. I especially enjoyed the crispy squid with chilli and my lamb was so tender it melted in the mouth. All a very enjoyable evening and I will certainly come back.

I was hoping to find in L'Etranger one of those surprisingly good, off the radar places, like Club Gascon maybe. I did find a fantastic sommelier, excellent wine, and very prompt service, so it is unfortunate to report that I didn't care for the food. The beef tartar wasn't bad, but the scallops weren't cooked properly and didn't taste fresh. The duck also was overcooked in parts and undercooked in others. Not sure how that is possible, but in my opinion the kitchen was having a really bad night, which is unfair to the wonderful front of house service. There were very few people in this restaurant and I don't know whether that was because of the time of day I was there, or whether it isn't doing very well. It is listed in the guidebooks and some critics I follow had good meals there in the past, so I'm not sure what's happened.

Having booked, I was somewhat concerned by some of the reviews I saw on this site ... I should not have worried! The food was first class, beautifully presented on the plate and the service was very nicely paced to allow us to talk business as well as to enjoy the meal. I particularly enjoyed the tuna tartar. The wine list was very comprehensive with an enormous selection of top-flight wines, available at suitably top-flight prices. It was possible to search out lesser priced, and for this occasion, more appropriate bottles. The reviews seem to show that everything is not always perfect at this restaurant. L'Etranger (largely because of their Black Cod) has long been a favourite of ours and, having been travelling for almost a year, was our first choice to go celebrate some fabulous news when back in London.Food was delicious and service (often not great in the past) was note worthy with both waiters being really personable.A fabulous night until someone who we'd thought to be a fellow diner, but transpired to be the owner, went to the greeting/ service area to take issue with the staff over something. It might possibly have been language Gordon Ramsay would use in the kitchen but the owners 'colourful' Ramsayesque tirade echoed through the room and completely spoiled our meal and our celebratory feeling. It shouldn't be acceptable in a greasy spoon and it certainly shouldn't be acceptable in an upmarket restaurant in Kensington where we were paying above £30 for a main course.Hugely upsetting and, where in the past we've recommended L'Etranger to many people, we won't be back irrespective of how good the black cod is.

Each restaurant can claim that the food they serve is fusion or international or anything else but what really matters at the end of the day is the taste , service , atmosphere and size of portions and when it comes to these categories this restaurant is less than average and if you want to save yourself disappointment and frustration then don't go there .The food taste is not good at all in starter , main dish and dessert categories , my starter was crispy squid which was in reality crumbles of greasy squids , my main dish was salmon that had no distinctive twist , just a piece of salmon thrown on a plate and as for dessert my sorbet came melting and dripping and was more like a sugary liquid rather than a sorbet .The service was slow and the waiters could not present all dishes to our table at same time and there was lack of cooperation between the servers .As for size of portions they are certainly small so if you have a normal appetite you will leave this place with half empty stomach .As for prices I can not comment as I was invited to this place on a business dinner , so I didn't get the chance to get acquainted with their prices.I was seated in the basement and it is secluded and more quiet than upstairs but has an awkward odor and is dark .I certainly can not recommend this place and was deeply disappointed in every single aspect.

Overall, the service was excellent and the decór was spotless. Although food portions were small, were certainly very tasty (depending on which dish was ordered). For starters, the wild mushroom veloute was superb although the duck rillette was a bit of a let down as there was insufficient crostini to counterbalance the saltiness of the rillette. On the other hand, I really enjoyed my pan fried stone bass (it was really fresh!) and my boyfriend said that the seared salmon was one of the best he has ever tasted. We both liked the panna cotta, but agreed that it could have been a bit sweeter. On a side note, the house champagne was a bit too dry for our taste.

They needed a private room and within easy walking distance of the conference hotel.L'Etranger was a perfect choice. We organised a set menu that was absolutely delicious. I certainly wouldn't catagorise the cuisine as Franco-Asian or fusion - it's just excellent French inspired international food. They seem to have a great new chef. Excellent service in their private room. Agree that the decor in the restaurant does not encourage a warm ambience. The decor is stylish, albeit a little passé. The staff were pleasant enough, but the timing was a little off - the wine arrived the first course, the bread after the main course. The food is edible, anything with truffle can be made to taste good, but several dishes lacked flavour. The scallops were on the mushy side, the gnocchi bland, but the black Alaskan was good. Cheeses were also passable. It strikes me that this place has had its day, and that both the restaurant and the menu need a make-over. Pricing is about what you would expect in this neck of the woods, not unreasonable.

Having booked and told them we did not have too much time as we were off to an event at The Albert Hall, service was diffident, surly and unhelpful. We had to ask twice for them to even take our order. The first 2 wines off the wine list were unavailable. The portions were minute and the chocolate mousse dessert a joke. Less than two dessert spoons at the bottom of a large bowl. At least we were able to laugh about it. It really seemed like a joke. My son who had flown in from France said he could not wait to get to The Cirque du Soleil so that he could fill up on popcorn! For such an expensive restaurant, the boring cold decor, unhelpful staff and minute portions make it the worst restaurant we have ever been to and we eat out frequently. I cannot imagine how they would cope if there were more than 2 tables occupied. All in all one NOT to be recommended

We had dinner here with friends a few nights ago. It was lovely. The restaurant is pleasingly decorated and the staff are wonderful with impeccable manners. My girlfirend and i both had a caviar starter and she had duck whilst I had lamb as a a main - we couldnt fault either. It was a treat - the longer we live in this area of London the more we like it, and the more we realise that moving away from the bars and restaurants on the kings road (apart from the bluebird, which we love) is the way to go! This seemingly low key restaurant is just a delight!

I went to Letranger for the first time on a business dinner for one of the restaurant's monthly wine tasting events. There were 16 people in total, and the restaurant sat us on a beautiful table in their function room. Both the owner and a representative from LVMH spoke about the lovely champagnes and 4 course menu. Excellent service, food, wine and company. The evening was a great success and my clients enjoyed themselves very much! The hospitable owner even brought out some fantastic armagnac after dinner as well.

We arrived for our 6:30 reservation with hardly anyone in the restaurant, so that may have helped focus the service, but I don't think so. It was supportive and ever-available but not pressing, just the way I like it. Had the Scottish scallops (terrific) and the roast Alaska cod (also terrific). Chose the fig / black sesame / cinnamon homemade ice cream selection and was disappointed that there wasn't any flavor to the fig (which I had most anticipated) or any creaminess to any of them. Still doesn't prevent me from giving it an Excellent.

I have been coming here for years, great location and food. On my last visit, the whole menu had changed. The owner, who was very charming and knows a thing or two about wine, mentioned there was a new chef. Food had improved and great new dishes!

We had a fun night with friends here, but it wasn't without mishap. Being aware it was valentines weekend I called when booking specifically to check that their good value set menu would be available. I was assured it would be, but on arrival we were told it wasn't. To be fair, once they had grilled me about who I'd talked to they did let us have the set menu, but it wasn't the most auspicious start. The waitress who took our order looked thoroughly depressed and was very keen to tell us that she couldn't take our drinks order. Although a sleek restaurant the atmosphere was somewhat severe and we often felt that perhaps our predilection for smiling was not appreciated. The food was good, but let down by the rest of the show. Overall it feels like the restaurant knows it's in a desirable postcode and pretty much thinks you should be grateful for being allowed in, rather than caring about giving you an enjoyable evening. You might think our experience was a result of requesting a cheaper menu that we'd been promised on booking, but I genuinely don't think that's the case - I think it's a sullen experience no matter how much you pay! The one shining light was the waiter who took our dessert order. He even told a joke.

We went today for lunch for Valentines day, we walked in and the restaurant was dead minus one table of four people, when we walked into the main restaurant it was very dark, no lights were on and no heating either, there was zero atmosphere and this was the least inviting restaurant I have ever walked into, we had to ask the waiter if he could switch the lights on (what.. I have never done this before in any restaurant in my life and it was 1.30pm)! The maitre'd then walked up to us and was wrapped up with a scarf around his neck and his coat on looking freezing, we then asked for the A La Carte menu (not the Valentines day menu) and were told the normal menu was not available (when we booked our table we were told the normal menu would be available)! We decided to leave as this was very bad karma for a possibly terrible meal ahead! What a shocker, we used to come here all the time and it was perfection. The restaurant needs a serious new interior design, it's like sitting in a freezer it's so cold, uninviting and unwelcoming, it never ceases to amaze me how any restaurateur can get an interior design for a restaurant so wrong, the windows are covered by cheap metal balls/drapes dangling down which makes the restaurant even darker, all we wanted to do was rip the dreadful things open to bring in some light, why on earth would a restaurant do this, no one outside is going to be able to see what the restaurant inside looks like, this is why it's dead, totally uninviting from the outside and in! At night time the restaurant and atmosphere is (well was when we used to go) much nicer butt very sadly they must be loosing money hand over foot, what a great shame, come on L'etranger, shape up or ship out, get a great interior designer, good staff and you will be at the top again! TIP: Do not go fo lunch.

empty at 7pm, busy by 8.30. interesting to have sushi on the menu, some creative dishes on the main menu, but no wow factors, average, unsatisfying overall, lots of other options nearby, ie Racine for traditional french cuisine.. Somellier had good knowledge and broad wine listings but pricy selection.

Will definitely NEVER BE BACK, don't wast time and money and never bring someone you want to impress!

We arrived at 5:30 to an empty restaraunt (was told it was a popular time to book) having pre booked the pre-albert hall set menu for £32. Having only seen the restaraunt online via their website we had a very different place in mind. When we arrived we were the only people present. The waitress took our coats and we sat down. Dark furnishings and quite austere - I had the impression it would be bright and inviting but no matter! Although we had booked the pre-albert hall menu this was not offered up - instead it was their regular menu and impressive wine list which was all much pricier. The food was lovely and atypical of fine dining - select flavours and small servings. The dessert was lovely and a good size, and on top of our set menu we both had another glass of bubbly. My only compaint would be that once we had settled the bill and were on the verge of leaving the place the waiter came up to us and announced he had forgotten to put the second glass of champagne on the bill - and then brought us another bill for this. I appreciate it was a mistake on his behalf and yes, we had drank it so should pay for it - but as we had already given our card and paid and were clearly on our way out - not realising the error ourselves, it seemed a bit of a let down that they would quibble over a £14 glass of bubbly considering they have wines on their menu that are £700+ I have worked in retail and catering and if you forget to add something to the bill I would not dream of going back and announcing this to a guest to make them pay. To be honest I found the experience a bit uncomfortable and didn't leave feeling all that full - am aware this is fine dining but a lack of ambience and a bit pretentious in this place, suppose thats London for you. I wouldn't go back, lured in by a reasonably priced set menu but would rather go somewhere with more soul food !

I took my sister here before a David Gilmour show at the Royal Albert Hall. We were early and it was quiet and so I've no idea what the ambience is like at a more normal dining time. The waiter was very helpful letting us mix and match between the pre theatre menu and the a la carte. The wine list was expensive but the pre theatre came with house wine which was very acceptable.. We told the waiter we were going to a show and the food came along at a nice pace. The surroundings were formal and fine as befitted the expensive a la carte menu. We were satisfied.

There is no explanation. There were waiters and staff swirling around like busy bees in all corners. Getting their attention, yet alone a menu or even better a wine list was nearly impossible, but what difference did it make when we finally got one and promptly ordered a bottle of wine? Nine! There was back and fro but no glasses, no waiter, no bottle. At one point when we spotted the girl trying to serve what we believed was our wine, and for the fourth time she rather than approaching the table she turned away, our friend jumped up trying to grab the bottle from her. To no avail as it turned out it was meant for the other table that has been waiting as desperately as us for their liquid, with little luck as the delivery was interrupted by some commotion in the other room hidden from plain sight. After failing to understand nor being able to discuss the menu nor order anything after 45 minutes we decided to leave going to Crib de Rib across the road. We never found out what happened, but no ambulance or police showed up that would have confirmed our concern for the well being of the manager who was so clearly absent we thought he might have passed away in the basement.

Overall an overpriced restaurant on the Gloucester Road, which is not really a surprise. I had a set menu with a terrine, venison and pecan pie. Terrine was slightly dry and under seasoned; venison was cooked very rare and was a nice cut, which I approved of; and the pecan pie was a little overcooked.Staff were friendly enough but I was treated very rudely by the doormen when I first approached the restaurant. Plus the shared toilets with the adjoining nightclub is a really bad idea.

My lawyer friend and I had booked a table for two for dinner. We had been to L'Etranger several times in the past.
The recommended champagne served for the aperitif, Ruinart Blanc de blanc, was flat and uneventful. We mentioned it to the sommelier and were told "that is the way it is supposed to be". We drank it but did not enjoy it. We told the sommelier that we were disappointed to which he replied "I will do something" and served us two glasses of Roederer. And later added them to the bill!
The food served was very average. My chocolat fondant was served cold. I sent it back. The chef made a new one. It was OK.
The bill came, the price was high. We told the staff about the additional glasses of champagne which we thought had been offered to us. The sommelier did not seem happy and took them off the bill.

The next day I emailed the restaurant and the owner to briefly say we had been disappointed. No one replied.

Experience at L'Etranger, 2 November was just terrible. Despite Open Table asking for a cc details to book this restaurant and the confirmation email received, the restaurant refused every knowledge about out party although restaurant was absolutely EMPTY. I would have thought that they should have welcomed us with the open arms, despite it was quite obvious they were annoyed we were there. The prices that are shown on-line have either increased by 40% or they just didn't want to offer those to us. We were offered either a la carte or Pre-theater menu @ £35 per person (just to compare, Open Table has 2 courses @£ 17.50 & 3 courses @ £ 22.50). As we had a show to see at Royal Albert Hall (and we told them that!) all of us decided to opt for the set meal apart from one lady who asked to order from a la carte. The GM told we should all had either set meals or a la carte. I complained and he said he would do us a favor. Although we have ordered by 5.30pm it became obvious that the service was very slow when by 6.30pm we have only been served the starters. We repeatedly asked different waiters to speed up. At 6.50pm I have spoken to a waitress asking on how we could possibly have another two courses if the time when we had to leave was 7.15pm. The main courses arrived at 7.10pm when all of us were just fuming. GM said they were a fine dining restaurant, not a quick bite to eat place and so they had to cook everything from the scratch. Bear in mind, the restaurant was EMPTY and the menu was called "Pre-Theatre". Why do they offer such a menu if are not prepared to serve it fast? How did they expect us to get to the RAH if the dessert (they refused to let us have the dessert after the show) came at 7.18pm? I found it outrageous, the GM did not apologize, did not offer any discount or a good will gesture but instead was defensive and on the point of accusing us of taking time to decide what we wanted to eat when ordering the meal. This place is a NO GO.

Saturday early evening pre-concert dinner for 2The beetroot ravioli was very tasty, but small - half portion quantity.Main courses require the addition of 'sides', driving up the price.Salmon fillet was, well, salmon.Lemon sole was lukewarm, and the garnish had gone cold. The potato gratin had been done to death and was rubbery.Cheapest wine is £35 for a bottle. We confined ourselves to a glass each (125ml)There was a crude attempt to persuade us to trade us up.The wine itself was poor. I can get better in the supermarket for £5.Now the bizarre bit.We had booked via an online service. We had a 'heads up' email 24 hours in advance.55 minutes before our time, the restaurant issued a cancellation. At the time we did not notice, only seeing this 'cancellation' next day.We turned up, and dined as we had expected, in a half full restaurant. What was that all about?

Came across this place when I was looking for a fine Kensington restaurant close to the Albert Hall - I wasn't initially sure as I had seen some mixed reviews on tripadvisor, but I have to say I thought it was fantastic. The food was exquisite !! And the presentation even better. The staff really made a fuss over us and nothing was too much trouble. There is also a bar downstairs which is open quite late and is extremely atmospheric, so we came back after our concert for a romantic nightcap. Thank you L'Etranger!!

Seriously impressive in every way. I had dinner there on a Tuesday, so was expecting a quiet dinner a deux, but was pleasantly surprised to find it packed, but with a great range of couples and families, plus big gathering in a private dining area. The food was superb. We picked at the probably the best sushi in London. This was followed by an amazing guinea fowl with a grain mustard sorbet - never heard of such a thing, but was astonished! Finished with the black cod, which was amazing and fell apart in the mouth perfectly. The restaurant also has the most extensive and fairly priced wine list I've ever seen, which doesn't even compare to their champagne list!! Perfect place for intimacy or to celebrate. As it also has a great nightclub downstairs, I'm aiming to hold my party there.I can't tell you enough what a great evening it was. Many thanks L'Etranger, you'll be seeing me soon.

As I've done many times in the past when making my annual visit to the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, I came late to l'Etranger on a midweek night (much later than I'd booked for in fact, due to the concert overrunning its time). Even though it was midweek, the restaurant was quite busy and had a nice chatty ambience. I had the charolais tartare for starter and the duck two ways with foie gras for main. Both were beautifully presented and tasted delicious. Two glasses of Haut Cotes de Nuits complemented the dishes well. I skipped dessert but had a double espresso with a Marc de Condrieu digestif and some petit fours. Service was excellent.

Our pre-concert visit, booked for a Sunday at 17:30, meant we were bound not to be in a full restaurant. But to be the only table in a restaurant so close to the Royal Albert Hall seems crazy. We had a great meal, choosing the 3 courses with 2 glasses of wine for £35.Portions were adequate, and, in the case of the crispy squid starter, generous.Between the 6 of us, we enjoyed salmon, trio of beetroot ravioli and squid as starters. And beef cheek and salmon as main course, finished off with banofee pie for desert. No complaints from any of us, on any of the dishes. Though I would have preferred some green vegetables with my beef. The wines (a syrah from Sicily and an unusual Turkish white wine) were good.Coffees and water added a further £10 per head, but in Kensington you need to expect that.
