Star of Bengal in Canterbury

We visited friends in Whitstable and decided to go for a meal. We did book a table. The staff were very accommodating and attentive. We ordered our meals and they arrived hot and steaming. Didn't have to wait too long. The food was exceptional. The restaurant is only small and was very clean. We can't fault this little gem.

Had a lovely meal with family. We all enjoyed our food which was very tasty and good portions. Very friendly and efficient service and a complimentary drink at the end which was very much appreciated.

Always come here when we visit Whitstable and has yet to disappoint us. Food fabulous, staff friendly and polite. Thank you for a lovely meal. Nice complimentary drink and chocolate too.

On arrival at our apartment close by, we were met by this wonderful aroma of indian food. It made us want to try out this restaurant. We arrived around 6pm on Friday 6th September 2024 when it was initially quiet. We ordered our food which was above our expectations. The service was outstanding, particularly from the Manager and Aziz. They work so hard in what became a very busy evening in there. We didn't feel rushed, we will definitely be back to this lovely restaurant which is very reasonably priced and well run. It's a must visit in our view and thanks for the nice little touches of a free drink and little chocolates.

Came in here as read the reviews and when we walked by it was busy. Glad we did, packed out and the atmosphere was very good, families and couples mainly. Service was very good as was the quality and taste of the food, piping hot and plenty of flavour. Would definitely recommend.

We saw the poster advertising the Sunday deal. This was a starter, main, side, rice and bread for under £15. We did check the deal was on as it was the bank holiday weekend. The restaurant was packed. This offer seemed too good to be true! The menu had great variety including a number of fish dishes that you don’t always see. We checked if we could order anything from the menu and use the offer. Food was great and enjoyed by all. When the bill came it was the normal prices and so significantly more than expected. We did query this and asked again about the deal and the bill was changed. It was great food and we would recommend - but advertising this deal and then not charging in line with this offer meant it felt awkward to query. They could offer a Sunday buffet with reduced number of dishes for £15 and I’m sure customers would be happy.

Myself and my friend (he lives with Dementia) had a lovely meal here this evening. Staff were very attentive and food was lovely. We will definitely return.

Very friendly staff and overall an amazing curry experience, with dishes we haven't heard of. We eat curry everywhere we go and would recommend this place.

Was a quiet Tuesday evening, a few people were in so we thought we’d give it a try. Had a couple of poppadoms with fresh dips, slightly onion and pickle ones were very good, honey and mint ones less so. Had Chicken Dhansak and Tikka Lamb Saag. Dhansak was really good, Saag was flavoursome, but lamb was a bit chewy. Flavours of both dishes were excellent. We had garlic naan and plain rice to accompany and both were good, naan in particular was lovely and fresh. After the meal we were offered free drinks on the house which was a lovely touch. I had a Baileys and my partner had another glass of red wine. New fresh decor and waiters were attentive and efficient. Would come back again.

Visited with my family and we are so glad we did! The food was delicious! Even my fussy 9 year old enjoyed it 🥰will def visit again.

An absolutely delicious meal served with the added panache of the wheeled trolley. Food was fresh, flavoursome, and so very tasty and menu varied to prompt you to look at something different. Would thoroughly recommend and our only disappointment is that it cannot be our local.

Me and dad gave this place a chance for a change and it was out of this world from start 2 finish and the chicken tikka ceylon was 2 die for

The food here is outstanding. Full of flavour and with a fresh,just cooked taste that is often missing in other restaurants.My go to dish is always dhansak and they are superb here.Fairly spacious so even when very busy it doesn't feel too crammed in.Service is efficient and friendly (hello Mahmoud!) and satisfaction with the meals is always checked by the waiters.Good value and plenty of vegetarian options,the side dishes are particularly delicious,vegetable samba being one that stood out.

We ordered a takeaway for 23 people the day before we wanted it. The service and delivery was outstanding. Everything was delivered accurately and piping hot! Staff, food, service and delivery was exceptional. Highly recommend. We have eaten in the restaurant many times too and the food and service quality is always of high standard. Living in Whitstable, we have managed to try all the Indian restaurants but always come back to The Star of Bengal for both takeaway and dine in experience. The food is spot on, fresh tasting, authentic Indian cuisine with a lovely selection of classic dishes. The staff are friendly and helpful. The decor is cosy and traditional. Would highly recommend.

Very good food, would order again

Was on an impromptu weekend away with my wife and as usual when visiting Whitstable we decided on visiting the star of bengal in Harbour Street. It’s become somewhat of a tradition for us, but that does not mean I am biased at all. The restaurant itself is a good old fashioned ‘curry house’ with cosy yet traditional interior. Something that is hard to find in the current climate of modernisation and the current trend of most restaurateurs to deck their premises out with ubiquitous leather chairs and magnolia walls…… sporting the tower bridge or Big Ben canvas. So to be sat in a cosy corner of the Star of Bengal accompanied by sitar music playing over the stereo system was like going back in time. The food was (as always) absolutely spot on, hot and reasonably priced. The staff were ever present and always on hand. Not once did I feel rushed, bearing in mind it was a Saturday night and our mains were timed to perfection. Nice touch at the end of the night was the offer of a short on the house. Again a nice touch that seems to have died by the wayside in many establishments nowadays. CANNOT recommend the Star enough. We will be back next year when we visit Whitstable again. All I can say is that I am jealous of the locals!

Here again when in the area- always our go to restaurant. Both nights the same- vegetable pathia- chana masala- bombay potatoes - plain rice and a peshwari naan. All served piping hot- pathia just as it should be- hot- sweet- and sour- everyhing cooked perfectly. As vegetarians we always look out for Indian food- and I have been to loads of Indian restaurants throught the Country- this is up there with the best of them. Met Mehmood on the second night- he always offers a drink on the house but driving so had to decline- very pleasant man who will look after you very well.

I’ve ordered a few times from here and like it quite a bit. My favourite is the prawn puree, but this time I ordered it was very stingy. Usually the portion size is fair or even generous. This time I couldn’t even cover half the flat bread. I ordered three but I feel like I got the equivalent of getting one this time. Disappointed

The food was ordered, cooked and delivered within 19 minutes. It was delivered 35 minutes before the time stated on the app. The food arrived cold and part of the order was wrong. The dishes did not have much flavour and the curry tasted watery.

Haven’t had the food they have given it to some one else. I have now waited over a hour to get my foot again. It’s been 2 hours now

We visited this restaurant this evening. The setting was warm and inviting. The staff were very attentive and polite. Everything was perfect. Our food was faultless. This is the best Indian restaurant we have visited for a long time. Our visit was a lovely experience we look forward to returning. Thanks staff for a lovely meal.

Had a takeaway from there last night it was delicious, North Indian special , lamb rogan josh, aloo gobi, aloo mete,and peshwari nan, all superb.

Great food, service and value for money. Admittedly it was Saturday night and we went early because we didn't have a reservation, but it wasn't long before the restaurant was full.

Great food and great service! Lamb Shaslik was amazing! Big chunks of meat cooked to perfection! Onion bhaji was nice and crispy and the beer was cold! Been a few times but this was the best yet. Thank you.

I expected the food to arrive about 17.30 which it has always done but it didn't arrive until 18.05. I don't like to moan but you have asked. the meals are always very enjoyable from the Star of Bengal.

Food order placed and further 3 calls with a combination of the delivery driver and the manager and I did not receive my order. Shocking incompetence

Didn’t receive some of our order (2xrice and a side dish). Rang the restaurant and they said the missing food was on its way even though we had only just rung to say it was missing which seemed strange. 30 minutes later the missing food hadn’t arrive so we rang the restaurant again. This time they said they didn’t understand because last time we said we didn’t have any food but it was now delivered (this is not what we said). Once we explained again they ‘so do you want use to send the missing food’ but we said no as it was so late, we instead asked for a refund to which we were told they couldn’t do it because it was ordered via just eat. We said this wasn’t acceptable and they said ring tomorrow. Also the food was ok but the chicken was over cooked and so a bit dry.

I ordered this lovely Dansak for my wife and me to eat later when we decide to eat it. Very handy. I like that they deliver lunch time. Excellent food, always excellent.
