Shobab in Canterbury

Fabulous food & flavours, service took 30 mins from ordering for food to arrive which was OK but at 8pm, just after we'd finished eating staff asked if we could leave at 8 as table was booked for others (we hadn't booked) Need to bring own drinks as no licence so cost significantly less than what you pay elsewhere round here. Bit loud and noisy but food top notch

On the plus side we were given a table for two without booking on a Saturday night at 7.00 p.m but on the minus side we weren't informed the table would be needed at 8.00. We only had one course, god knows what would have happened if we'd wanted starters. The bill was brought as soon as we'd finished our food without us being asked if we wanted a dessert. I had to gulp down my wine as it was clear that a largish group were waiting outside for the table. Very unsatisfactory end to what had been a delicious meal. Put me in a grumpy mood for the evening especially as our bus cancelled ( no fault of Shobab) Mixed sizzler was unbelievably gorgeous and my husbands hot Keralan chicken dish was lovely too . Just a shame the ending of the meal was spoiled. If we had been informed the table was needed in an hour we prob would have left it and gone elsewhere or home as we are locals.

This place was a lovely little find! Was down for the day and fancied something to eat. The food was delicious and such good value for money. You take your own drink as they are not licensed, which was fine as there’s a Sainsbury’s 3 doors down. The service was excellent and we don’t wait long for our food to arrive either. I’d come down from London just to eat here again, we’ll worth the journey 👍

Fantastic food and prices BUT all hard surfaces, so VERY noisy. Also no alcohol licence, but non-alcoholic beer and wine available.

Just had a takeaway from this place,and I ordered 5 dishes.Every dish was spot on,especially the lamb tikka!! Looking forward to dining in!!

The food here is the best i have had, countless meals in india, asia, even the humblest home cooking or fine dining in hotels, Shobab is a mile above the competition. We are blessed to have Shobab on our high street.

Terrible service was told an hours wait 2hrs later it turns up 10pm far too late to be eating that kind of meal. Person on hone tried to argue it’s Saturday night but if they can’t fulfill orders in time then they shouldn’t take them.

The Onion bargey starter was absolutely horrible, over cooked and cold. The mains were nice. Maybe try somewhere else next time.

I'm so glad someone told me about this place. I was giving up hope that I could get a decent Indian delivered. The chicken in both dishes was succulent and seasoned perfectly. Fantastic portion sizes and the gentleman who delivered the meal was very polite. You've found yourself a regular customer. Thank you

It was a ver6 good food, well cooked .One of the best Indian takeaway we had for a long time. I've ordered Onion Bhaji,Lamb Samosas, pilau rice, Chicken Jalfrezi, Lamb Pathia and Pashwari Naan. 2 thumbs up👍👍

We’re so glad this restaurant is now open for dining in. We haven’t tried the takeaway food but have now eaten here several times either as a couple or with friends and each time the food has been fantastic from start to finish. Excellent onion bhajis , wonderful curries and side dishes and the loveliest freshly made naan breads. We’re grateful to have such a fab Indian restaurant on our doorstep. Oh and it’s BYOB at the moment - bonus!

Dined in. Very average curry. Nice place, service fine and an 🆗 curry, but nothing special and doesn't serve alcohol; bring your own with a £5 charge for corkage.

Very disappointed, family take away. The land dish had good flavour but the land was hard and unpleasant, it had clearly only had a brief introduction to the sauce. The chicken dish was far too sweet. Starters had clearly been sitting around a while and I suspect they had been quickly microwaved rather than cooked fresh. Naan breads and rice average. This used to be an excellent take away but the past couple of times have been really poor, higher prices and smaller portions. Don't think Ill visit again.

Takeaway and the Chicken Shaalick was dry and the Prawn Madras Bombay potatoes and Nan was not as good as we have had elsewhere

Not good , pompadoms were not fresh i had a Lamb balti all I could taste was tomato puree awful.They don't have a alcohol licence so take your own, and they will charge £5 corking . Will not be going back very poor qaulity

Excellent Indian food. Ordered mix of meat curries and vegetable sides. Lamb biryani, chicken jalfrezi. All excellent. Very impressed

Absolutely delightful service and a reassuringly short menu (which does, however, include most of the curry house favourites!). Great value and really tasty food. Particularly rate the jalfrezi and the pakodey rolls! The restaurant doesn't have an alcohol licence but you can bring your own drinks and pay a corkage charge (there is an off licence just over the road.) All in all, this restaurant is a real crowd pleaser and we will definitely visit again.

Absolutely dreadful! We booked a table for 8 people. We were not informed they had no alcohol licence when we booked, so we’re surprised when we went to order a drink. Well that’s just the start we waited nearly 90 minutes for our food to be served. We complained and received no apology and an awful attitude when the very average food was delivered to our table. We spoke to people on 3 other tables who also experienced the same customer service and wait. My advise is give this “restaurant” an extremely wide berth.

So happy this restaurant has re opened we had a fantastic meal. Sooooo tasty lamb Nagga you simply have to ask for this - not on menus but available

BEST INDIAN EVER!! Shobab do THE BEST crispiest onion baji absolutely stunning. Chicken tikka masala, chicken madras, 2 rice, onion baji and Peshwari naan for just over £30 and it tasted amazing

Takeaway and what a disappointment = The meat was inedible it was expensive waste of money. The flavours were exceptional so the chef they have is good but the meat they are using is terrible and we literally fished out all meat and binned. The onion hajis were also a bit odd and tasted commercial rather than hand made. So disappointed for what we paid. will not be using again

I tried a takeaway from here this evening at the recommendation of a friend and was not disappointed! I was a little apprehensive having looked at the past reviews but I needn't have worried. I ordered on line and collected 20 minutes later and the food was delicious and at a very reasonable price. I will definitely be back!

We had a delicious meal tonight from the Shobab. Kerala Mirchiwala and Chicken Tikka Massala were both delicious and I can't get enough of the sauce that comes with the onion bhajis. Everything was ready within half an hour, great service too

They only do takeaway so I expected much better from them. I ordered my curry and was given a time but it went way over and when I tried ringing back, the phone was constantly engaged. We are still waiting an hour and forty five minutes after ordering …. If you can’t get the delivery right then please don’t offer a delivery service

Ordered at 17:30 said 45 mins delivery time. Arrived at 18:55. Portions were very small, about 4.5 king prawns in my dansak. Vegetable curry punnet was only half full and consisted of a boiled potato and very little vegetables and no sauce. Really disappointed. I will not be ordering from Shobab again, it's back to the Sabara for me from now on.

Classic takeaway dishes and interesting house specials. All very tasty. The website is very easy to navigate and order from. Delivery times can vary from the suggested time. We've had food show up earlier and later than expected.

Was trying to make an order and the man that answered the phone was so rude and kept tutting . So i cancelled my order. I would advise that you do not use this Indian and go to the Star of Bengal they are very friendly.

Can’t tell you Enuff how much this place is good!! We have used this place for 3 years now , probably 2 times every month and EVERY time the food has been the absolutely best you can get anywhere in the uk. I’m so happy my weekend takeaway is the best ever. We have used every takeaway within 20 miles from us from all residential places we have lived over 45 years and I can tell you this one hits the top every time!! Used to be a firm favourite....has it changed owners/chef? Food was below par. And lady taking orders lacked customer service. Wouldn't order from here again, no wonder they are giving 15% off for cash!

The food is exceptional, however never get it delivered they say it’s going to be 40-50 minutes take your number, when you call to ask where your order is they say it’s on its way. It takes no longer than 10 minutes by car to where we are, 15 minutes later I called again questioning where it is they said “we tried to call you we left a message but no such call came through” they said “ I have it on the hot plate and we will bring it to you straight away” this has happened before and the food was cold. My advice is to go and collect it never get it delivered as they are liars. So sad

Best Indian takeaway in the area

I have a Shobab takeaway virtually every week and it is always lovely. Great taste and depth of flavours. All of the family love it. I normally collect and it's always ready on time

Ordered a Saturday night delivery and told they were busy the wait would be 80min - 90min, which was fine. After 90 mins I rang to be told our order hadn’t reached the kitchen yet! Whilst on the phone in the back ground I could...

Ordered a takeaway and was told 45 minutes…called after an hour and a half and was told it was a big order (for 4 people of 1 dish each) so would be another 25 minutes…after another 50 minutes and over 2 hour wait from when we ordered was told it would 20 minutes more. I explained the situation and previous conversations to be told they could do it in 10 and that it was because I had spoken to their colleague that we’d been told sooner…just not ok. I appreciate places are busy but don’t appreciate being lied to.

Having moved to Whitstable from London, finding a first rate curry house had proved elusive until I discovered Krishna. Krishna on Old Bridge Road held that title until it closed permanently during lockdown. Sadly, I have yet to sample another curry within this locality which mirrors Krishna. Shobab were very quick to deliver the order - surprising quick which raised questions & concerns, especially for a Saturday evening. It was an adequate curry at best with no “wow factor”. If you want a no frills, ultra quick takeaway then Shobab may meet your requirements. Portion wise, I was disappointed, especially with the Chicken Balti which formed part of my order. Having an exceptional curry house in Whitstable would be fantastic for the area. I’m hoping all relevant owners see an opportunity and raise their game.

Lovely takeaway for our family of four. Spicy and tasty Madras, pathia, and dansak. Juicy lamb and chicken and a lovely paneer. Smoky tarka dhal and fragrant pilau rice. All hot, fresh and good portions. We loved it.

Awesome takeaway!! Food was sooo good!!! We had 2 meals and both were fab. Kids had chicken tikka and we had chicken mutant palak! All fab!!

Had a takeaway on Tuesday eve , great customer service over the phone and delivery was great But the food was so disappointing nice flavoured sauce but barely any chicken/ prawns the onion bharghy was so dry and all the food was lukewarm , I’m so sorry for leaving such negative feed back , we was so looking forward too a Curry , but not here anymore . Ps quite expensive for what you get £40 , such a shame

Sometimes you get a delicious curry and sometimes it turn up atrocious, with consequential stomach upset. I love curry and I love this place but what would you get is always a gamble.

Forgot the naan bread and was rude on the phone. Said could deliver another in 50mins or refund the money later. Not great if you want to heat curry hot. Over spicy and other items were wrong too

Best Indian restaurant in Whitstable . Love eating here and due to current restrictions it's great they do a delivery service. Had a delicious meal on my Birthday end of March which was as delicious as normal and arrived promptly.

Just had a takeaway from the Shobab and it was absolutely delicious. The chicken was really tender and the curry sauce had real depth of flavour. Always so friendly.

The serving staff do really look after you. The food is great, fresh and tasty. They need to move into bigger premises as it can get crowded.

It is now end of January. I have let this settle for a month as I didn't want to write this review without careful consideration. However after a month I am still livid.We booked for a table of 8 on new years eve for 8pm.Turned up at 8pm sent away as not ready.Returned 30 mins later still not ready.Staff had to shuffle other diners about to make space.Time now getting towards 9pmSlow taking orders.Meanwhile a succession or takeaway people came and went.Guys in restaurant were rushed off their feet and could clearly not cope.Kitchen looked like a bomb site.We eventually got served at 10.30pm.Food was poor and only because we were all ravenous by this time did it get eaten.Obviously complained and 50.00 was knocked off the bill. Pittance I am absolutely furious with the owner of Shobab. How greedy are you. You clearly tried to take too many takeaway orders at the expense of fairly regular customers. My evening was all but ruined and we just about made it to our New Years Eve spot for 11.30pmI will NEVER set foot in your establishment again nor will I EVER recommend you to any friends or family.Absolute disgrace. How can you make 7 dishes all taste of nothing...these guys know. The second worst curry of my 38yrs of eating them. Lazy and tatty decor. Avoid.

Have visited a number of times and alwaus been ok but tonight was appaling.Appreciate being christmas eve they probably had lots of take away orders but we waited over an hour for our food to arrive at our table.When it did arrive it was totally inedible.All the meat was tough.When we brought it to the attention of the manager he was completely disinterested.We offered to pay for our drinks but refused to pay for the rubbish food and were then threatened with the police.How do you treat people in this manner.We tried everything we could to make things right but you only wanted your money.Will never visit again.

Myself, my family and lots of my friends use the Shobab all the time. We love coming here all year round; the food is excellent, the atmosphere is warm and the staff are always polite and helpful. Thoroughly recommend to all.

7 of us visited here a couple of weeks back and all of us said how much we enjoyed the food. I love curries and the Chicken Naga that I had was excellent. Decent value too, worked out around £15 each with a drink and some sides / bread. Would definitely pop back if back in Whitstable for an evening out.

Visited on a Saturday night....we hadn't booked but staff were pleased to accommodate us. Great selection of food and attentive staff. plenty of choice and tried some meals i had never had before. great spice and look forward to visiting again.

We booked a table for 2 at this restaurant by telephone — 3 hours before the booked time.

I sue to visit Shobab regularly but the last few visits 6 months ago were terrible - bad service and really poor food.

Very efficient considering there were 15 blokes, pretty prompt service, food okay certainly not exceptional. Lack of toilet facilities a problem especially with 15 men drinking pints.
