Came here for my dad’s birthday, four of us including our little girl. What a fantastic evening! Made even better by having ‘the snug’ which was like our own private cosy dining room. The food was absolutely top rate, service brilliant and the atmosphere, as ever, friendly and atmospheric in this wonderful pub, one of our faves.

The Star Inn used to be my local when I lived in Old Heathfield and now is under new ownership but still with long standing members of staff and its lovely! I met a friend for lunch, neither of us are meat eaters so we both ate vegetarian/ pescatarian. The service was friendly and very helpful the food was delicious, with really fresh and colourful vegetarian options in the small plates/ starter menu and two vegetarian mains to choose from. Parking is easy and on a sunny day the garden is wonderful. This is now my favourite pub food in this area.

Excellent food. Poor customer service. We were made to feel like an inconvenience for being there by the lady behind the bar. They were apparently 'very busy', but there weren't many customers there.

There’s lots to like here. The interior of the pub is gorgeous - super traditional and cosy. The garden was looking incredible. Friendly greeting on arrival and good drinks. It took a while to get our food order in as we felt a bit neglected next to the gents toilets. When it turned up the pint of prawns was in a small glass and the beetroot and orange salad was pretty meagre. Not great value for money but fine. The fish mains likewise were good enough but the veggie main - stuffed courgettes at £18.50 had plain boiled potatoes and a salad with only the smallest amount of dressing. No butter, oil or mint in the potatoes. Felt a bit thrown together. The reason I’m bothering to write the recipe though is near the end of this dish I found a rubber band in the food. Alerted the young staff member. Sweetly she said ‘at least it’s not a hairband.’ When a senior staff member came over at the end with the bill I mentioned again about the rubber band. ‘It’s from the watercress’ she said. They apologised. No offer of removing it from our bill, a free drink or any gesture. Not impressed. Which is a shame as the place is lovely. Not great value for money as portions were small but you might get a free rubber band!

We heard there has been a change of ownership so we thought we'd give it a go as the staff used to be so rude. It appears the ownership may have changed but the staff haven't. We went for a snack for lunch but they didn't serve sandwiches or any other 'lunchtime' menu so I had a starter and my husband a bowl of chips. The starter was OK (halloumi and cherry tomatoes) but not worth £8.50. My husbands chips were undercooked, preprepared and there were only 16 of them for £4.50! Shame as we were hoping for the best. Hopefully this is teething problems.

The setting is spectacular and the views picturesque. That was as good as it got. The food was overpriced, and the service was lacking in any charm, and left us with the feeling "it was just to much effort". This together with the garden cabaret of at least one rat running around was off putting. Unlikely to return.

We came for Sunday lunch which never disappoints! We visit the Star quite regularly and I have no idea about some of the reviews about rude staff - every time we go in the staff are extremely friendly, courteous and helpful, service and great and the atmosphere both inside and out in the beautiful garden is just as a country pub should be. It definitely has its quirks but it is a great pub.

Horrible rude staff and an atmosphere of contempt. What a pity, cause the pub could have been lovely. It was like the scene in American Warewoolf in London, where nobody is welcome except the few old coggers who prop up the bar

I am not surprised this place appears to have two separate listings on this site, they are obviously trying to distance themselves from the consistently poor reviews on this listing. If only we had read these before booking, we would have thought twice before going, and we did indeed experience exactly the same rude and unprofessional service that so many others have mentioned. From being snapped at while patiently waiting to order, to being made to feel extremely uncomfortable for being just 2 people less than we booked for, the rudeness was continuous. Despite claims of being busy there were 4 visible staff and it absolutely was not especially busy. The negative attitude was incredible, and astonishingly culminated in one of our group overhearing the landlady(?) encouraging the staff to deliberately make our table feel uncomfortable so we would leave quickly and the table could be reassigned to some regulars, who would appear to be the only people welcome in this pub. Do not be fooled by the pretty pub, and the nice looking menu, this does not extend to the service, which is the worst that I have experienced after many years as both a manager and a customer in the hospitality industry.

I never usually write reviews but felt that I needed to. This is the first time we'd visited and to be honest, I was a little hesitant after reading some of the reviews. But, we were so glad we tried it for ourselves. It is a beautiful old pub and they were extremely busy (which speaks volumes) but we managed to get a last minute booking and the service was great. We did arrive a little late so they almost gave our table away, and we had to order quickly as the kitchen was closing, but this was fine and Sue politely explained this to us. The food came out fast and it was lovely, we couldn't fault it. I have to disagree with the comments written about the landlady. Because the Sue we met today was very attentive and nothing but friendly. She also took the time to chat to us and our daughter dispite being so busy. I've actually never been to a pub where the landlord/landlady has been so interactive with the customers, it was really welcoming. We had a very enjoyable lunch and will definitely be returning, but will also recommend it to friends and family too. Thank you to Sue and the staff at The Star Inn, Naomi & Reuben

We’ve been going to this pub on and off for some 30 years. It’s always been varying, but recently the food has been especially bad. The pub itself is wonderful, although parking is limited. We finally abandoned it after a dreadful lunch. How is it possible to ruin a basic pub fish and chips? But they did so. Hopefully someone else will take it over and improve it. If and when they do, we and many others will support it.

The staff were friendly and the pub is a lovely old building. The roast beef was probably the worst I've had in years though - very chewy and grisly and somehow the roast potatoes tasted of a cleaning product (something like bleach?). On reflection I should have sent it back, but in true English style I soldiered on, only to moan later :-)

We went here hoping for a nice meal for our wedding anniversary. However, after we'd ordered our drinks, the unfriendly barlady told us that as it was si hot the kitchen had just closed. It was 2.10 pm!! Very disappointed. We won't go there again as the last time a bar staff member was pretty miserable and no smile or pleasantries. We visited as a family on Saturday lunchtime. Found the landlady to be extremely defensive when telephoning to book a table, her reaction was “don’t you know how busy we are”? The irony was that the place was extremely quiet! Her bar lady (mature woman) was unbelievably rude, literally snapping at you, it seemed to annoy her that we had simply wanted to order drinks. Wish I had read the reviews before, but the most unwelcoming defensive people I have ever met. Hospitality is not what they are. However, we did have a lovely young waitress serve us, poor girl must be so much miserable if they are her work colleagues/boss. I am amazed that they actually make any money as I am certain all locals must avoid, now me included as we have never had such rude interactions. Such a shame as the pub has a lot of history, gardens are lovely, gorgeous views and reasonable food. Unfortunately this did not make up for their attitude. Avoid like the plague!

I found the 3 mature ladies in the pub very unwelcoming because we were 5 mins early to opening time at 12 midday. They kept saying how unprepared they were and couldn't give me a paper menu as they were being sorted to eliminate the dirty ones. Eventually I was given one from the pile. On ordering our food I was told I couldn't have a black coffee with milk on the side as it came out of a machine and they were not allowed into kitchen to get milk to put even just a dash into my black coffee for me .... merely because they press a button and the coffee comes from the machine. When I paid the bill without adding my usual tip as I felt rather a nuisance. However, the two servers who brought our food were charming and very helpful. while sitting in the garden which was peaceful and quite delightful a friendly Robin joined us. The food was good and well priced but not exceptional. I and my son decided we would recommend it to our family or friends.

Awful experience today here. We had a booking for 1pm and unfortunately arrived 15 minutes late as the A21 was closed to we had to to drive a very long way around. At 1:20 we got a call from the landlady saying that we're a no show and she was cancelling our booking. We were actually sat at our table in the garden at this point, she simply hadn't come out to check. We'd spent the five minutes since our arrival getting an elderly member of our party who often uses a wheelchair settled at our table. The landlady then came out and thrust some menus at us and said you're late, you're going to have to fend for yourselves now. We went in to order and were told we could have drinks but we couldn't order food as they were now too busy for us and it was our fault and we were making "a balls up" of the running order of her lunch service. Eventually we were told we could have mains but not starters and we'd go to the back of the queue as they needed to cater for everyone else who had turned up on time. We then waited over an our for our food and we're not offered dessert afterwards. The whole experience was very uncomfortable and we were treated so incredibly rudely (this all applies to the landlady, the rest of the staff were very young but polite and helpful). I felt very sorry for the rest of the staff, they were clearly terrified of saying anything that might set the landlady off, it looks to be a very stressful and unpleasant place to work.

After visiting this pub yesterday the young staff were amazing at the front of house and the food was above average out of the small kitchen. How ever.....the landlady is a sour old soul and I think has a few issues setting in with her as years pass. It's such a shame as it's now been getting worse each year for the poor lady, she doesn't really seem to know what's going on anymore and getting very confused..maybe time to hand it over now to someone who wants to enjoy seeing and talking to people in a Public House.

Sat down at table after multiple comments from the land lady about being late ( we weren’t) Had been sat down for about 3 minutes when she came and said she had to take our order straight away as it was late and pushed us to make a decision, making remarks about not all of us having starters.. Food arrived and was okay, not great, squid was rubbery, burgers were tasteless and dry.Waiter came to take out plates and returned not minutes later asking what we were having for desert and was pushy and difficult when we politely declined. Then no staff were anywhere to be seen when we were ready to pay the bill, until we went to find someone. When trying to pay we asked if it would be possible to deduct the burgers as they were not up to scratch and the landlady became even more rude and nasty than before telling us to leave immediately ending with her screaming in our faces to ‘f**k off’ as we were leaving at a normal pace rather than running away. Caused a real scene, completely unnecessary as we were all calm, polite and happy to pay 90% of the bill. Really ruined our evening and came away rather upset and taken aback by the unbelievable rudeness and aggressive manner that we were treated with. I personally wanted to order a portion of chips when i was then informed they don’t sell chips unless it’s as a side. The food was very expensive and i had to tell the lady i could not afford it. i also told her that i was hungry as i hadn’t eaten all day. up until this point the conversation had felt awkward but not rude. the lady then proceeded to tell me ‘that’s fine. go hungry and stay skinny’. which i personally found completely inappropriate. My friend then came and ordered a drink for me and told the lady she felt the comment was unnecessary. However the landlady felt the need to storm over to us and tell us we had ‘attacked her in her home’ and proceeded to kick us all out. awful atmosphere and we never be returning. a shame because the garden was so beautiful.

We arrived late on a monday lunchtime, 10 minutes before the kitchen was going to shut(14.00) but they said they would fit us in as long as we ordered the food swiftly, which we did and that was great. It was a beautiful day and their garden is classically marvellous. The choice on the menu was limited and pretty expensive, but we weren’t being forced to eat there. The food was generally very good, though the portions were a bit mean, especially at the prices being charged. They were the first home-made chips I had eaten in England for ages it The steak was excellent and a fair size. But the starter portions were a bit insulting considering the cost, though the quality was quite good. They were not very busy and if they had been I imagine the staff would have struggled. The elderly lady who was clearing and bringing the dishes was rather amusing in that though she came and cleared up quite efficiently, she always asked in a rather demanding fashion that all the dirty dishes be passed down to her. But nothing serious. Decently priced wine. Desserts adequate. Great position off the beaten-track. In the past when I’ve been there and had to eat on the inside I always felt cramped. So I understand while some other reviewers have critisized attitude of the staff, the size of the portions, all in all I had a very pleasant lunch. I will go back.

I started the conversation with this woman by saying my hsuband and I had so liked the garden and setting , and I was ringing up about the Sunday lunch which I saw was now back on ." de star inn is leuk van buiten, en leuker van binnen. de baas vond het wel interessant om met ons over wijn te spreken. de bediening luisterde naar onze 6 jarige toe die bier voor de ouderen en fris voor hemzelf ging bestellen. en het eten was lekker!

Rude, condescending owners. We were told to “keep the noise down as you are being too loud.” When I approached the bar, I was being criticised/ interrogated by the owner, bartender and the locals. Very intimidating environment and I felt as if I had to stand my ground. The opposite of welcoming and friendly. They commented on my appearance and my speech leaving me feeling angry and embarrassed. There was a strong sense of elitism.Such a shame as this is a wonderful looking pub, shame about the people who frequent such an establishment.

Fantastic food , small and cosy , regular menu change , would advise booking, as hardly any tables for two , my friend took me for my birthday, but unfortunately we were seated next to the men’s toilets so unfortunately there were men walking constantly pass our table and the door to the toilet was banging.. rather than squeezing in that table it might be best to take it away as this is my only criticism but a major one

How I wish I had! DO NOT make any any negative comments about your meal or else you will face the ‘inquisition’! Goodness, the landlady doesn’t take any prisoners! Far too often these days, customers fail to speak out if service/ food is below expectations; I can understand why they don’t at this pub. Unfortunately, the landlady’s attitude has been adopted by the staff as well! At one stage, I thought I might be on a Fawlty Towers set, it was that bad! Average food that’s overpriced; poor service & quaint but shabby furnishings. I’ll cross this off my list; so disappointing.

We have been meeting our friends in lots of pubs in this area over many months for dinner and have had some fabulous experiences. This one however was different! The food was delicious but the portions on the small side. When this was mentioned to our waitress, we were swiftly visited by the landlady to tell us that while she welcomed feedback, she proceeded to be rude and aggressive leaving us feeling intimidated and shocked. The tone of service changed, the waitress snapped at a helpful younger member of staff serving us coffee, and tossed our bill (sizeable for what we had consumed) on the table without a word! There are much more pleasant experiences to be had nearby.

Pub with a great atmosphere. Friendly and helpful staff. Was given a cosy table for 2 which was lovely. A good menu choice that stears away from typical pub food. Locally sourced produce and seasonal foods. A delicious meal. Good wine choice at the right price. A perfect evening.

Beautiful old pub. Went for a quick lunch with friends, hoping for a lunch/sandwich menu but main menu only. Thought I'd have cheesey chips instead but was unfortunately point blank refused cheesey chips, plain chips only. Reasoning was it "stinks out the building" - certainly not something I've experienced before. Friend had mussels which she said was really tasty. Slightly odd eccentric landlord but apologetic about the lack of cheese. Unfortunately the menu is too restricted and pricey for me, but will be to some tastes.

Popped in for lunch and was extremely disappointed with the food, £16.95 for four small scallops is totally over priced and not good enough for a main course. The landlady is possibly the rudest woman I’ve ever come across, mutton dressed as lamb and a seriously bad attitude. What a dreadful pub, has such potential which is a shame.

The garden is superb here in summer and the interior of the pub is so old world and quirky. The menu changes regularly and they can cater for all dioeterary requirements, vegan, vegetarian, lactose intolerant etc. Lovely pub, highly recommend it!

Reviewed after several visits. This pub has a gorgeously situated garden now somewhat overgrown from its peak a few years ago,but still lovely..but oh! The owners...unbelievably rude and aggressive land"lady" when my guest complained of the awful coffee...landlord has been dreadful in the past too over inedible cold beef et al...woman's toilets mucky. Quaint cosy interior..I go back repeatedly for the garden but needs customer caring owner. Hopefully this venerable gem will outlive the current one.

Friendly welcome in a dog friendly pub; sat in the garden which was surprisingly warm for a November day; food better than expected and staff very helpful; good cold roast beef portends well for Sunday lunch – must return.

Lovely old pub, serving pretty well cooked food. In the summer, the garden would be the perfect spot for a shandy! We found the service 100% good and I loved my lunch but really regret not having the flat iron steak my wife had. UNBELIEVABLY GOOD!! Perhaps a little pricey but will return.

We went for a family review. The Guiness Welsh Rarebit was so disgusting it was inedible. The Wild mushrooms on toast was a little better. Ham egg and chips were generous portions but one piece of ham was a little suspect in appearance and taste. When it came to paying the bill just about every item was dearer than on the menu!

This pub has amazing ambience, very old world atmosphere. The staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. I am vegetarian and they had a vegan option that the chef also said he could cook (not on the menu) if I wanted. The garden and view is great. Lovely atmosphere

Having recently moved to Heathfield from Brighton with its huge array of quality pubs and restaurants, this pub has made us feel so welcome, and can honestly say this is one of the best pubs for food and drink we've visited, so lucky it's on our doorstep. Mike and Sue are perfect hosts, Mel, James and Laura ably support!! We recently celebrated my wife's birthday here and were treated like kings in the upstairs restaurant. Having spent many of the recent long summer evenings in the beautiful garden I have to say the food is consistently excellent and good value. Wine list is well chosen and very reasonable. Can't recommend highly enough. The staff and locals don't bite either despite some reviews

Was looking forward to having a meal with friends. Ended up having ploughmans, terrible..... Toasted, stale, so called sour dough bread, poor salad, thin sliver of "do you call this cheese???". We very politely complained when the ham was replaced by more 'limp' lettuce and been expected to pay £12.95 for this!!!!

The Star Inn has a relaxed, slightly eccentric atmosphere, very much feeling like a local's pub. Staff were extremely thoughtful reserving us a table for nine both indoors and out in case the weather changed. It was a bright sunny Saturday so we chose to sit outside in the garden with views towards the Sussex Downs. We decorated sun umbrellas with balloons and put up birthday banners which no one seemed to mind. We ordered lunch for 6 adults and 3 children from the specials board - Pork Belly, Granard and Haddock, all exceptional. We took our time over lunch but with energetic kids in tow we did not stay for pud, vowing to return another day.

It was quiet for our Xmas do though we may have been the first to have a big group event :) We had the festive menu. The carvery was lovely, however if veg is left on hotplate too long it can be bit hard - not sure if there's another solution to this. Some in the group were not overly enamoured with the Mac 'N' Cheese, felt it was not cheesy enough. The chips were overcooked which came wit the burger. Overall, it was a super evening, lovely venue and welcoming staff.

I’ve been to this place a few times now, when flying to and from Gatwick Airport. I’ve always been impressed by the staffs politeness and courtesy, going that extra mile. They are very dog friendly with treats at the bar, and water bowls provided. There has been a hansom, well behaved, and affectionate Australian kelpie dog there on a few of my visits. The rooms are reasonably priced have been consistently clean, tidy and comfortable during my stay. I would not hesitate to recommend The Plough Inn to any other traveller or patron.

We visited the Boar's Head Inn at Crowborough today (19/6/24) for a Wake following the funeral of a dear friend. We were absolutely amazed at the wonderful spread that was provided. Both hot and cold food. Well presented and attentive service. Excellent! We have visited for lunch meals on a couple of past occasions and have always been impressed by the variety and quality of the food. Thankyou.
