We booked this in advance as we were staying at Parkhead House and going to be visiting Hopetoun House anyway and thought it would be a nice way to round off our day after walking to Blackness Castle. When we got there at 2.30pm it was the end of lunch but still busy, we had to get in a queue at the cash register to let them know we had arrived and had to wait a while as there was a difficult customer in front of us making a fuss. We had booked the afternoon tea with bubbles for $22 each but when the food came what they had on the other table for $7.50 looked just as good as ours and at an extra $5 for bubbles we'd have been better off with that option. The other scones were huge, ours were wee tiny things with fruit in them, definatley felt ripped off as not worth the money.

A very stylish and tastefully decorated tearooms with lots of space between tables. Orders are placed at the counter but it wasn't really clear what food was available, not helped by the server having a very strong accent (Spanish or Italian maybe). I decided on a humus and roast veg sandwich which was very nice but short on the roast veg, a few tiny pieces of red pepper and onion, (more of a light garnish than a component), compared to the amount of meat my other half had on his sandwich and for the same price. The sandwiches were pre prepared but very fresh. Perhaps the kitchen staff should take a look at the quantities of ingredients on these sandwiches!

The benefit of price hierarchies means your expectations are set in advance. An economy flight vs business class. A hotel’s presidential suite, vs the dingy double next to the kitchen extractors they save for Secret Escapes. Almost every experience requires some navigation of a price based hierarchy, to help pre-emptively manage the expectations of its customers. The other aspect to convincingly pulling off a hierarchy is to suitably distance the inferior, economy experience, from those paying a higher price. See British Airways use of blue curtains to discreetly shield customers from full exposure to the egos of those travelling in Club Europe. It’s extremely rare to find such sub-hierarchies within the same restaurant, and rarer still to find the hierarchies in full view of each other. Yet, the Stables Kitchen, at Hopetoun House managed both. We ate here a year ago, and found it a pleasant lunch spot with friendly table service and a tasty menu. Macaroni with local cheese, a beetroot burger, delicious fish finger roll with homemade tartar sauce. Twelve months later and the menu has shrunk to an A5 afterthought of items either fridgeable, or microwavable. Worse, skeleton staffing means a thirty minute standing wait at the counter to order. Everyone likes a cappuccino, but nobody likes waiting for seven to be prepared ahead of them in an immovable queue. Once back at the table, we lift the lids on our soup bowls. It is not carrot and coriander. It’s a watery, lukewarm grave of broccoli and blue cheese. Nobody told us this, just an unsmiling assumption that by the point you’ve stood and waited for so long, your emaciated form will consume anything presented. Despite the main selling point being the afternoon tea, the place being half full, and it being only 1:30PM, we’re told there are no more scones or sandwiches, so soup and traybakes will have to do. There’s no apology for this, and the state of the baking rubs salt in the wound. Millionaires Shortbread, the Viennese Whirl, and the Ginger Slice all share a brittle, margarine enriched base. They are sandcastle dry, disintegrate upon contact, and turn to wet cement on the palate. The Cherry Bakewell slice is unyielding, its unwelcome memory lingering long in our stomachs. Halfway through, the end door opens, and it dawns upon us. We’re flying economy. The long centre table fills with German coach-trippers, all flying first class. Table service presents them with wave upon wave of fresh sandwiches, scones and petit fours. They laugh, enjoying their lunch and cream tea. We’re left, undisturbed in a corner, watching as this unfolds. They should really market their scone recipe, given how quick they can go from ‘none left’ to eight cake stands laden with hot fruit, plain and cheese. We exit, walking past those enjoying themselves, our wallets as light as our spirits. Please, do not waste your time and money here, leave them to serve their first class passengers. As a walk in, by the time you realise you’re travelling on an economy ticket, the damage is already done.

Terrible overpriced lunch. Quiche was expensive and came with a tiny pile of lettuce leaves, kids cheese sandwich took 20 mins to arrive, scones were inedible, the worst scones I have ever tasted, under cooked with far too much salt in them.

Took my mother in law here for afternoon tea for her birthday i rang up to book but when we got there they weren't ready for us so had to wait over 40 mins before we got our food. Last year when we came for afternoon tea the soup and sandwiches came first big sandwiches then the cakes came after we finished the sandwiches. Last year the cakes were big and the scones were full sized and there was more cakes than we had this year. This year everything came at the same time and didn't fit on the table had to get another one brought over. The scones were tiny and only had one eash this year and not enough cream for 3 people cakes were small but nice felt like we had the kids portion sandwiches were nice but when you counted the triangles it wasn't even a full sandwich. On a good note the food was nice but not enough for 3 people my mother in law had gluten free and was disappointed that they didn't have scones for her. First 3 photos are last years second 2 is this year everything one one plate. I loved the mint tea.

My second visit, a year since the last one. Gave it the benefit of the doubt. I shouldn't have. Disappointed both times. Service is SO SLOW. party of 5 today, just lunch. 2 of our party had finished eating before another plate arrived. Then the 4th lunch arrived, at last. The 5th lunch was a child's ham sandwich (took over 30 mins). They brought 2 cheese sandwiches. that wasn't what we ordered and when we questioned it, waitress was snippy. Ham sandwich finally arrived. Had to go and ask for our cold drinks after 25 mins, they were never served. How can soup take over 20 mins? We stayed for coffee and cakes. They were nice. Flies are a problem. Buy nothing from the counter that is pre made. Flies will have been on it. No covers for any sandwiches, quiche, scones etc When I mentioned it, server did bin the ham that we'd watched a fly sitting on. He said because the door is open, flies get in. Yes, so cover the food and cakes perhaps? Beautiful surroundings and setting. Just very badly organised and not living up to the potential it has. Could be done so much better.

I’d been planning a visit for lunch with my cousin for a while and certainly found the drive up to the house very impressive. However, we found the menu to be overpriced and lacking in choice. I asked the server what was in the daily salad, and he just shrugged, looked in the bowl & said ‘butternut squash & other things’, not particularly helpful. I went for the quiche which was tasty enough but nothing special. Not sure I’d go back although I did see some people having afternoon tea as we left, and that looked quite appetising.

My wife and I returned to the Stables Kitchen after a tour of Hopetoun House, having visited a month previously. For this visit my wife had booked the set Afternoon Tea, which isn’t quite my thing, so I booked for a main course. In our experience there aren’t many large heritage houses or attractions around the UK which offer a café or cafeteria with such comfort, style, cleanliness and reliable food quality, plus a small team of alert, friendly and professional servers. Note that you can eat or drink there during the House’s open season without having to pay for admission to the house or grounds. BUILDING AND AMBIENCE The Stables Kitchen went through a superb refurbishment before the start of the 2018 season, and as I noted in a previous review the difference between this year’s Tripadvisor reviews and 2017’s is startling. It was previously styled as a tea room, whereas now it’s definitely a smart café which still serves afternoon tea. [For reader info, the website link here at Tripadvisor takes you to the Heritage Portfolio Ltd page for The Stables Kitchen. Heritage Portfolio is a Scottish company which offers full event design at major venues around Britain and also oversees a small number of “destination cafés” at some of these venues, including Stables. So note that if you want to view the Stables’ menu or kids’ menu before booking or visiting, go to the Hopetoun House website and click on ‘House and Grounds’, then ‘The Stables Kitchen’, then ‘The Stables Kitchen Menu’ or ‘Kids Menu’.] The Stables’ main space is large, with beautiful modern Italian chandeliers, large windows on one side and at the end, and a row of elegant standing lamps on the other side; overall the lighting is quite lovely. New underfloor heating has been fitted beneath the stones; all the furniture is new and very smart, with a choice of grey fabric or dark wooden seats and two long tables for parties of 8 or more. There are also four sofas sharing two low tables. In total, the café can seat around 100 guests, which it needs to since Hopetoun House is a popular venue for big weddings. Male and female toilets are very smart and clean; both include nappy changing facilities. There is soft background music – light pop – and the stone floor offers a slight echo, but neither interfered with conversation at all. FOOD AND SERVICE We arrived after our house tour a little earlier than we’d booked, but were met at the door by Iona, a friendly young lady, who was happy to seat us straight away; our main server during the meal was the kindly and knowledgeable Juan. The room was about two thirds full and felt busy, but the small team of servers worked tirelessly to keep everyone attended and happy. As on our last visit we noticed one of the team spraying and wiping down each table every time guests left. The menu offers a limited but imaginative range of choices, which is usually a good sign of decent cooking. My wife had ordered the set Afternoon Tea when booking, and she had a large choice of drinking teas to go with it – she chose Gunpowder Tea, which was very fine and a great balance to the sweet treats. As we’d noted before, the pot arrived with a tea strainer in the cup - no tea bags here. I ordered Yorkshire Pudding Roast Dinner Wrap, served with a seasonal side salad, and one of the café’s non-alcoholic cocktails (‘mocktails’), the ‘Arnold Palmer’, which was a very refreshing blend of lemonade and tea served with lemon slices and ice. The Afternoon Tea (see photos) comprised a small bowl of lentil pâté, three savoury sandwiches, a plain and a fruit scone with jam and cream (all made in-house), a glass of strawberry and pistachio mousses and shortbread, and two beautiful pastries – a tiny square rhubarb tart and a heart-shaped strawberry and cream millefeuille. Including the pot of tea it cost £22. We asked Iona if the pastries were also made in-house, and she explained that they are made centrally in the Heritage Portfolio kitchen. Nonetheless, my wife loved everything, and we sent our praises to the kitchen for the scones. We asked for a doggy-bag to take the two pastries home for an evening treat – Iona was happy to supply one – and they were delicious. I really enjoyed the Yorkshire Pudding Wrap. It was presented in a pleasing tumbled-over plating (see photos), and filled with slices of pork, carrot and parsnip, in gravy with a small extra jar of gravy on the side. A light batter and lovely flavours, though the pork was a little overcooked; the gravy was superb. OVERALL The Stables Kitchen definitely is a “destination café” worth visiting for its own sake, and as we found, it’s worth returning to. 5 stars for achieving its aims so well.

Having read a lot of not so good reviews we were keen to see for ourselves what Hopetouns Stable Kitchen had to offer. The food was of nice quality all round however my egg mayo sandwich was very light on the egg mayo and at this price point that was disappointing, tasty? Yes just not enough of it which made for a dry chewy lunch. A big plus however was the coffee it came in a proper coffee pot two full cups piping hot and £2 was a really fair price why do so many places over charge for poor coffee? Staff here are friendly attentive and professional just the way you expect. I agree the menu is a bit restricted but our party of four all ordered different far3 and wer3 quite happ6 with 5he selection on offer. So happy to giv3 a positive review and recommend.

Of all reviews I've made, this one has to be the most confusing. It just doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. The Stables Tearoom is what it says on the tin, but finding it was not at all clear. Tearoom is occasionally signposted, but not the word stables, so you are not sure if you are in the right place. No clear markings at the car park either. The grounds on the other hand are exceptional and are a must to explore. On entering the tearoom, the place looks rather plush with the upturned equivalent of chandelier lighting, tables well spread out and decked with fresh clean linen, and fake (but good) silver service cutlery and accoutrements. The staff were all well presented and dressed accordingly for the setting. All of this suggested a high end restaurant but is then badly let down with the rest, and puts it back in the realms of a simple tearoom, which is what it says it is. The beautiful table settings and layout are then let down with a paper napkin. The large room with stone floor was bare and cold (most people ate with their coats on). Even some more flowers or paintings would have helped. The menu comprised of burger or sandwiches. The food was good however, we had to ask a second time for our drinks as they had been forgotten about.

Everything is made fresh that day by the amazing Angela who also served us and was very attentive, funny and really helped to make out visit even more memorable. I couldn't recommend this place highly enough - although we discovered that the catering is by Heritage Portfolio and they also do the catering at our favourite lunch venue in Edinburgh (the National Portrait Gallery) so that made sense! All in all, fantastic experience.

Visited today for my nana and mothers birthday and it was superb. Afternoon tea is by far the best we have ever tasted. The woman who served us (Angela) was so friendly and made us feel very welcome. She makes the afternoon tea herself and you can certainly tell, as it is all so fresh. My highlight was the brownie, or scones with the nicest jam ever.

We went for afternoon tea. The soup was unexpected but very welcome on a cold day and was very good. Good selection of sandwiches, excellent scones and cakes. The lemon posset was very unusual. An excellent afternoon out.

Had a fab time with my 14 year old son treated by a great value groupon voucher. The house and surrounding estate adds to the luxury visit. On arrival you park your car away from the house on the left as you arrive, unless disabled where parking is available beside the cafe. From the parking attendant to the cafe servers everyone was helpful, friendly and discreet. The afternoon tea was my favourite to date. Served on a cake stand with a separate savoury platter with sandwiches, savoury scone and mini mushroom soup. The waitress provide a suggested eating order which we decided to follow. This journey added to the experience. I had breakfast tea with my son having luxury hot chocolate and mini marshmallows, all with refills. Dogs are welcome on the outside terrace. This would normally cost £20 per head which I would be happy to pay on a return visit.

Deliziosa questa tè room in un'ala di Hopetoun House! Si può gustare un ottimo tè con squisiti dolcetti; la scelta è molto vasta. Non mancano altri tipi di piatti. Servizio impeccabile, una pausa eccellente.

As a family of four with young adult children travelling to the UK for a month, we decided this was were we were going to enjoy high tea in the afternoon at 3pm. The food was amazing, service was "what service" and the price was OMG. Perhaps we were hosted on a bad day - but really this is not an excuse!!!

Excellent venue & setting for leisurely tea & cakes. Scrumptious. Great food & coffe. Service slow at times. Only complaint was lack of cream & jam with the scones. Received more when we asked, but shouldn't need to.

Visited recently and had morning coffee & cakes, then lunch, at The Stables. Staff were friendly and attentive, and surroundings were relaxed and pleasant. Selection of cakes was excellent. Lunch was good, though pricing seemed bit excessive considering the portions were small and salad with the sandwiches consisted of just rocket, rather than mixed salad leaves which would have been much nicer and looked more substantial. Why do chefs think one type of salad leaf represents salad? Overall, however, our experience as a family of four adults was good enough for us to recommend The Stables. The service and charming environment and immaculate toilet facilities more than made up for any dissatisfaction with the price and standard of lunch.

We were looking for the garden centre tearoom and following the diversion whilst the new road bridge being built ended up at hometown house. The Stables Tearoom was first class, lovely building, it was quiet, the room cavernous, classical music playing, today being quiet at about 14.20 hrs, it was simply lovely. Fruit scone was spiced and exquisite. Thank you and good service.

Went for afternoon tea in the old stables which are now the cafe. Very special. Amazing huge ballroom was impressive too. Great views from the rooftop viewing area.

Another excellent location for Heritage Portfolio superb fayre. We had cream teas which were delicious and made on the premises. It was a lovely sunny day and we sat outside in the colonnade but the interior was lovely as well. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the service was prompt. The only downside was that we arrived by following a lovely walking route from Blackness Castle (which is quite a bit further than the signposts suggest to actually get in to Hopetoun House) and, although the tearoom is accessed without going in to the house or grounds, and seems to be a destination in itself, we were suspected (presumably by the lady of the house) of trying to access the grounds without going to the car park to pay!

Popped in for a late lunch/afternoon tea after taking the dogs for a walk through the grounds. We must have looked very muddy and windswept but the greeting was very professional and the service was prompt (they were clearly very busy and told us it might take 5 minutes to take our order - they kept to their word, no problems at all). Soup and sandwiches were fresh and tasty but the selection of cakes was simply outstanding - I do not have a sweet tooth and would not normally go for this but they were quite irresistible - cherry bakewell was excellent but the lemon bakewell (freshly made on the premises that morning) was absolutely delicious. Very highly recommended - we will definitely return.

We went here to celebrate a 90th birthday with traditional afternoon tea for 6. Fantastic selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes, beautifully presented and kind and patient service for my elderly parents made it a lovely afternoon for all. Disability parking right outside the tea room also was very convenient.

Four us us went for Afternoon Tea in The Stables Tearooms, they only opened on Friday for Easter and we went on what was a Busy Easter Sunday, the service was a little slow but that didn't really detract from an awesome Afternoon Tea - don't bother with lunch if you are intending to go for this! Started with small cups of tasty soup, savoury scones, and sandwiches, then went on to cream scones and a very pretty (and delicious) selection of cake, macaroons and a little pot of posset ( sort of fruity creamy - yummy!) and of course pots of tea which they happily refilled for the tea monster! We also had a bottle of Prosecco between us as it was a special occasion, but you can have it by the glass or not as you choose. Highly recommended and if you feel the need to walk it off afterwards - on an nice day the grounds of Hopetoun House are lovely.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Asked for and received a vegan alternative high tea and it was delicious, very filling. The staff allowed us to leave the scones until we had had a walk around the beautiful grounds then we went back and finished them off. Then we went to The Farm Shop and Garden Centre for a browse and some purchases. Lovely finish to a lovely day out,

We spent most of the day at Hopetoun House and had lunch and afternoon tea in the Stables Tearoom. The atmosphere and service were excellent with a distictive olde wolde feel that made us have an understanding of what it must have been like to live in those times -throughly recommended.

We had afternoon tea at the stables on two occasions. In Aug 12 and in Apr 13. The first occasion was exceptional with the sandwiches being really different combos to those you would usually get. The cakes on both occasions were amazing. The second occasion was still good but sandwiches not as good as Aug 12. I hope they revert to their offerings of last year! Great location and very nicely decorated tea room. Staff were friendly and efficient.

Just came for a quick lunch to the Stables Tea Room at Hopetoun House. Staff were friendly and helpful, both in the ticket office and tearoom. It looks the part with tasteful décor and beautifully set tables but the food was mediocre at best. We had soup which tasted like tinned. I could open a tin at home but I don't because we prefer home made soup which is very easily made. The bread rolls were warmed but a bit stale and hard. Surely it cannot be that difficult. We won't be rushing back, sorry.

Personale gentile e premuroso.

Pretty standard fair for a Costa but the queues inside can take a while to get moving. If you're short of time, make sure to go through the drive thru instead as that moves at double the speed of inside

We wondered around many other places and decided for this places because of the initial kindness of the waitress when we where passing by and had a question. Went back for lunch and had a great lentil soup, salmon with salad and green juice. We decided to go back the next day, as we wanted something different from the regular pizza, hamburgers and such offered around. It did not disappoint, great place, very small and wonderful views of the castle

This was my first time here, and It was very good! My only complaints were that the drinks came a while before the food & that the small breakfast egg was quite greasy. The food tasted great though & the presentation was lovely. The tables were cleared efficiently as customers left & it was overall a rather peaceful atmosphere. Would recommend.
