came to Brighton for the day, regrettably found this pub. Placed order for fish & chips and a steak and chips. Kitchen had just opened yet FORTY MINUTES LATER,2 men resembling gangsters delivered our food. Presented nicely although chips looked a bit soggy. Hungry we tucked in. Fish was nice but steak was S.A.L.T.Y as we're my chips. Tried to get attention of barman who served us he eventually got the 'chef' COOK who said he'd redo chips but that was it. My entire plate of food was left because it was absolutely D.I.S.G.U S T.I.N.G. He began a full on argument stating how great his food is. He must have incredibly LOW STANDARDS to think his toxic slop was edible. He didn't have a clue who food standards agency were, which speaks volumes. My friends food was good until half way where the fish was cold and slimey underneath. The manager of the pub was in a tizz as to what to do. I left my cider which I never do, because the saltiness of the disgusting slop was affecting my taste buds. Even a bottle of water purchased outside this terrible establishment failed to take away the taste. I only had a couple mouthfuls which was more than enough, but my friend ate a lot more than me. Hope there won't be a case of food poisoning later. This is the worse tasting food I've had globally. Cook could have handled this so much better. But when you get an amateur being challenged and all they can do is rage. It tells me that maybe his qualifications to cook maybe very suspect.. It's simple food not good =refund. Anyone who wants to risk eating here better have very LOW EXPECTATIONS

Ended up eating here by mistake.. had just stopped for a quick pint, but due to the pleasantness of the staff (young lady’s first shift) and likewise from the manager/owner, I decided to look at the menu! As I say I hadn’t planned to eat here, but decided to go for 3 of the tapas dishes (garlic prawns/meatballs& fries), they were all lovely! Would definitely recommend!… you’ll even meet the parrot!!

Great pub - really warm and friendly. Welcoming to locals and visitors alike. Say hello to Biscuit the poodle, and Coconut the parrot. We tried the tapas and it was very good. Not expensive either.

Horrible cliental, very homophonic. I was hit by a man, banter apparently. Supported by the management, and not questioned. Never going back again.

We visited on holiday from Sheffield and loved this pub. Friendly staff, great drinks choice and the Lebanese food was lovely. I’m jealous of the locals who can visit here every week!

Best pub in Kemptown literally, bar staff had a laugh with us & made us feel recognised, remembered our drinks & made sure we were looked after. Great prices for the area, especially on double-ups and Guinness. Friendly intimate community atmosphere. Loved the Lebanese mezze style food, loads of veggie options. Pretty shot glasses. Big up the tall floppy-haired bespectacled bartender & the blonde bartender in the spotty top. Shouts out to Biscuit! We love you Biscuit!

With out doubt the stinkiest pub i have been in. Its put me off pubs tonight. I like pubs but this place stinks of sick and wee couldnt finish my pint !!

Have visited here a number of time for the Thai food. Great selection available on the menu and everything I've tried so far has been very tasty! Great value too so what's not to like! Draft beers are well kept and reasonably priced considering the location in Brighton

We loved this pub on the corner of Madeira Place & St James Street. Great ales and friendly staff. It had a real good vibe no matter the time of day we were in, mid afternoon, early evening and late at night. Yes we loved the place.We were peckish late afternoon and opted for a few Thai starters to keep us going, The Chicken Satay, Duck Rolls and especially the Spicy Potatoes were amazing. We didn't have a main meal but looking at other diners, they were huge and looked great, They have a DJ playing at the weekends so well worth checking out and the drinks aren't over expensive for Brighton.

We come across this pub after a very busy day exploring the sights of Brighton. 5 adults & 2 dogsVery friendly and helpful bar staff, letting us taste before we bought.. Great atmosphere. Good selection of beers /spirits. So good we made it out go to place next evening.. Higy recommended. NB. For the owner - it's a great boozer and would be better (hence only the 4 stars) if the gents toilets were better... They weren't rotten but the smell was awful... Whatever it is get it sorted and you've got a gem :-)

Tuve un fantástico pollo Satay y Thai Red Chicken Curry aquí. Y si te apetece una pinta o alguna otra bebida, también tienen un bar bien surtido. Pero yo estaba allí por la comida y fue bastante bueno. Bien cocinada, bien presentada, muy sabrosa.

Pasé aquí por una pinta esta semana. Muy ocupado con un ambiente amigable vibrante. Buena selección de bebidas a un precio razonable. La comida se veía genial, así que le daré una fiesta la próxima vez. El único inconveniente fueron los inodoros que eran terribles con cubos debajo de los urinarios.

Hemos comido en la calle James Tavern durante varios años. Los auténticos sabores tailandeses son tan sabrosos. Es genial tener comida tailandesa en un ambiente no pretencioso. Nuestra visita anual a Brighton para The Great Escape Festival se ha mejorado sabiendo que podemos confiar en este super pub.

Friendly, and if you like rums this is the place for you. Loads of them on the list and you've got to come here for at least 1 rum cocktail! Even when it's crowded there's a good vibe and can usually find somewhere to sit.

This feels like a friendly local pub. The Thai food on offer is fantastic and the bar staff were really nice guys. A good, warm spot to chill out for a pint and some yummy food.

A great selection of real ales on tap and friendly staff and customers. They have a Thai food menu and saw some dishes come out that looked really nice but didn't eat this time around. Ales were well kept and was quite busy for the time fo day/ early evening. Can definitely recommend and would go back for sure. 100%.

Never in all our travels have we been to a place where children are apparently not legally allowed to enter a pub / restaurant for a meal with their parents! I have my doubts as to whether this venue is legally restricted to 18 and over. I rather suspect this is a decision being made by management. in any case, this place missed out on the several hundred pounds our group of seven (four adults and three children aged between 10 and 17) spent somewhere else that evening who were quite happy to have our patronage.

My wife and I found this pub years ago during one of our regular visits. Every time we always meet very friendly locals who make you feel very welcome. Such a warm cosy place to relax. We go in every time we are in Brighton and are never disappointed.

Wow que podemos decir ! La comida era tailandesa y simplemente deliciosa! Increíble calidad y mucho de ello! Sin duda recomendaría esta joya escondida y volvería a comer allí!

Mis amigos y yo nos conocimos en la Universidad de Sussex hace 51 años y la calle James era nuestro local en ese entonces. Siempre nos reunimos aquí cada año para nuestra reunión de octubre. Buena cerveza y comida, aunque la cerveza es un poco cara, como lo es en todos los demás bares de Brighton. Me encanta Thai Duck Green Curry que pedí. La salsa de curry y las verduras eran excelentes, pero estaba un poco decepcionado con el pato, que era bastante graso. He tenido mejores comidas en visitas anteriores. Aun así, bueno.

Upon arrival we were informed the kitchen had just closed due to a few ‘problems with equipment’ .. after explaining we had travelled a long distance just to go there for food etc the barman (with red hair & a beard) offered to speak to the kitchen staff... the result ? wow! amazing service .. they provided us with (once again) the most fabulous tasty food. Little miracle workers - thank you so much.

Going there at least once a week and its the best Thai food in Brighton by far! Also so reasonably priced.

We love this place as it has a vast selection of rum to enjoy! It's a nice small pub, the staff are very friendly and the drinks are well priced. We were hoping to try out the Thai menu when we visited but unfortunately the kitchen wasn't open due to staff illness, so this just means we will have to come back, which we will!!

Pubs and Thai food are a few of my fave things! This place rocks! I was here 3 nights out of 6! And the rum selection is pretty outstanding! Go here!

Minor gripes first : 1) The paper napkins are the 'transport café' type which disintegrate after 10 minutes use so until they invest in some better quality ones, bring your own. 2) For some reason, the Massaman Curry on my last visit tasted too sweet. The pros outweigh the cons however. Since this is a pub rather than a restaurant, you can order drinks at the bar at bar prices and most importantly, the food is freshly cooked and about 40% less than comparable fare in a Thai restaurant. Order at the bar, and meal is brought to table. Recommended.

Came across this pub because it was near the air bnb we were staying in. Really friendly welcome with Adnams Southwold on tap, and huge selection of rums. Didn't eat there but Thai food looked great.

This busy pub has a great atmosphere and is usually very busy, but the bar staff are excellent and service is fast, efficient and friendly so there's usually no long wait at the bar no matter how busy they get.

The bartender was friendly and made me feel welcome. The green curry was tasty and hit the spot. I really enjoyed and would return.

This place was highly recommended by my hosts at the lovly BnB I stayed at. They told me about the authentic Thai food served there.I however stumbled in after eating elsewhere in search of a decent pint of Cider. Not Strongbow, Strongbow darkfriut, Cidre or other bottled friutflavourd livstions. I was not disappointed and not only decent draught cider but a choice of two.Lovely bar staff and a great atmosphere. A cider oasis.

We passed this pub as we were on our way elsewhere and decided to check it out the following evening. There were a few people there but not heaving as it was only a Tuesday evening. They have a great selection of ales, ciders and lager from the local area as well as abroad. They also have a fantastic selection of rums and cocktails, which are well worth trying. They also serve what looks (and smells like) fantastic Thai food. Unfortunately we didn't eat here but the food being brought out looked amazing. A great couple of hours spent here; the staff and regulars were all friendly and the place had a great atmosphere.

I love this place. It has wonderful diversity of a traditional corner boozer that has great range of draft and some colourful bottled beers but specialises in Rum - unbelievable selection. The major bonus is the kitchen does fantastic Thai food which goes down so well with a delicious pint! The staff are great and the manageress/landlady is particularly personable and engaging which is getting rarer nowadays. Recommend ++

Down in Brighton for a weekend and had a truly wonderful evening meal in here, Thai food at its best, cooked for you when ordered, piping hot and deliciously tasty .. and really reasonably priced. A lovely atmosphere, not pretentious and extremely good service.

A gem of a find. We've been walking past this place for years.. a 'quick pint' turned into a very much needed 'feed the soul' kind of place. Decent wine measures - a ' large' glass of sauvignon @£7 meant just that & good wine too. We couldn't resist ordering the food; as we sat near a large table of co- workers we were immediately taken back to an unforgettable holiday on distant shores. Best decision we made that day!From the starters through to the mains the food was faultless. Balanced, layered AUTHENTIC Thai flavours - including the generous portion of pink tinged crackers (£2). The veg tempura had a coating so light, they were like bubbles of crispy tangy air surrounding, fresh varied vegetables. In fact, I have never eaten (anywhere), such delightful tempura.We had 2 starters, prawn crackers, & 2 mains for around £27. The young lady (with pink hair), who served our drinks/took our order, was really friendly and efficient. Everyone received her friendly welcoming smile/ greeting and the atmosphere reflected her friendliness, on a very dreary Friday afternoon. It was filled, as you would possibly expect in Brighton, a wonderful mix of clientele although it never had a 'tourist' vibe / it felt like your ' local' with great food and ambience thrown into the mix.In the winter months, we were told it has a roaring fire;we will be back to toast our own pinkies at some point, although we know we'll be eating there again before too long! (It was St. Patrick's Day when we visited).

Whenever we are in Brighton we always visit this pub it has that old fashion feel to it inside ,the people that visit this establishment are a mixture of locals and holiday makers ,the place is very dog friendly and the food is very good value with the in house chef from Thailand the noodles and curries are lovely

Visited for a quick drink and bite to eat. Food selection is nicely cooked Thai cuisine, not best in Brighton but at a price you can't argue with, grabbed the Masuman and a pint of Aspalls cider for little over a tenner. Staff are friendly and very accommodating, easy to loose a whole evening here. Oh and they got an open fireplace, winner!

I visited here with my partner for a few drinks this week and had a lovely evening. We had the spiced hot apple with rum and sat by the open fire and it was delicious and just perfect for a cold winters evening! We then tried the first class flight of rum and greatly enjoyed the variety there was on offer. I am a regular visitor here anyway as the food is also great and the staff friendly and this visit has only further confirmed its place in my top pubs in Brighton!

Foods good, well not good amazing. Been here with family and friends and it fitted both of these occasions the open fire added good atmosphere as well.

Best proper pub in the area. You can go in, try a number of great beers, have a nice bit of (excellent) thai food. And, if you are feeling adventurous you can get into the rum in a big way.

Fell upon this fantastic pub by chance. Real ale top notch and the big surprise was the Thai menu, totally authentic and amongst the best I've tasted, all with an open fire on a very cold and windy afternoon, no more said....

Noi siamo capitati in una serata con musica ska e northern soul, e ci siamo divertiti ad osservare la non sempre giovanissima clientela, ballare, cantare e divertirsi in modo semplice e spontaneo. Bella atmosfera risvaldata da un caminetto acceso, buona birra a prezzi giusti e vera atmosfera da pub inglese.

A real bonus for our stay at Brightonwave in Madeira Place was the welcoming St James Tavern. Quirky a good, unusual beers.

This pub has a really great atmosphere and is dog friendly. It has a selection of Ales and larger. They serve Thai food which are good sized portions, the pad Thai was slightly wetter than any other Phad Thai I have ever had but it wasn't bad. The other dishes we had on the table were more traditional in style but all slightly spicer than we expected. The food is worth having and represents good value for money. We will be back.

we chanced upon the pub looking for somewhere to eat that was not just expensive fish and chips.we went in for a drink asked for the food menu and was surprised to see thai dishes.we love thai food so thought give it a trythe food came piping hot and smelling great and did not disappoint it was simply delicious and me my partner and her mum had a great freshly cooked meal for around 22 pound total would recommend and visit again oh and the staff great and nice clean toilets

Visited on Saturday evening and the place was lively and they were playing some great classic soul. Nice bar in the heart of Kemp Town.

Went a few days ago with my friend for dinner! It was quite busy so we got a very big table for the 2 of us. No one disturbed us to move or anything as it happens in other places!! And then we ordered food! I think one of the best thai foods in Brighton! And a massive portion!! Not to mention the variety of rums!! Great place, amazing food and rum!!! Staff could be a little more friendly!!but that's pretty much it!

Having visited the Caribbean numerous times we wanted to find somewhere where we could enjoy our favourite tipple - rum. I had googled the pub before so we knew we would be in for a treat! This is another old style pub, pretty sparse inside BUT a whole wall covered in different rums! The staff were all friendly and gave us a menu of the rums and well the rest is........!!! We tried various rums and cocktails and had a very nice few hours. The thai food we saw come out looked and smelled absolutely gorgeous. We will definitely visit again to try out some more of the rums on offer!

This is a great pub with Thai food. Great quality and quantity of food with good price. Better than many Thais restaurants in towns. Nice beers and services. It's our regular pub with Thai food.

Last time we were there, they had a problem with the card machine, but as there is a cash point opposite this wasn't too much of a problem. Set just one road up from the seafront this the perfect spot to cool off on a hot day, or gather a few friends for a good value thai dinner.

This has been my 'local' for 9 years! Having recently injured my ankle I managed to hobble here for a beer and received exemplary service and assistance. My thanks to Matt,Ellen,Adam and Sasha for your help and kindness...just what a local has always been about. Thai food excellent and value for money too.

We visited St James Tavern for a few drinks over the weekend whilst staying in Brighton.Situated in Kemptown and just a short walk to the front, this pub is a very traditional place to drink and eat.The building has plenty of character and a great place to sit on their rustic chairs watching people go past.Great choice of drinks including as many rums you could wish for. We found drinks a little expensive but soon found out that this was the norm for Brighton!!Brilliant atmosphere here and all the staff were very friendly and polite.Well worth a visit if in the area.

It looks like a traditional English Pub and it is, but with one exception. The menu serves some of the best Thai food in Brighton! I had the Pad Thai noodles with nice chunks of chicken. My husband had a green curry that was very subtle with a gentle hint of heat and Guinness.A unique feature of this pub are the number of locals who arrive with dogs. Each dog is greeted and seem to know everyone. The dogs were well mannered and added to the friendly atmosphere.

I really like the St James as a pub as there is a huge choice of rum. I recommend a spiced rum and ting. The Thai food is very tasty and very good value- I enjoyed a red pineapple curry and it was only £6.95 including rice! They are also very welcoming of dogs and the staff are friendly. However I agree with other reviews that the toilets are really gross!!

What can i say other than FANTASTIC.....The staff here were very friendly( Flo,especially). The food was amazing and the drinks were flowing. I was here as part of a stag party down for the weekend and as we were staying just round the corner, this place quickly became our local. Would certainly recommend this place to anyone visiting. A group of us were in Brighton for a stag weekend and St James became our local. The staff were friendly, helpful and a good laugh (especially Flo?). To top it off they had the best pub food ever, everyone in our group was impressed and it was great value for money too. The food should get 6 stars!!

Just popped in for a drink didn't eat but the food did look good. The pub was very busy which is always a good sign. Friendly staff and a good atmosphere.

I went on a Sunday when the kitchen( I must say the best amazing Thai food) closes at 7 pm. As I wasn't aware of it, I quickly ordered a dish for my friend and I. At 19h01, knowing that our dishes were being cooked upstairs, I tried to order another dish as we ended up being 3 instead of 2.I am a regular in this pub and I must say I have never been treated like this before, the staff behind the bar simply denied my last order,even our dishes were being prepared upstairs. They had a terrible attitude, unprofessional service and completely unhelpful. I must say a very disappointing evening. To be honest with you, it is normally a lovely pub to go and have a beautiful Thai dinner, but it obviously depends on the mood of the bar staff.

This pub is around Kemp town. Food was good, maybe the curries had a bit of lack in intensity or flavour but taste was good. As a pub, it's got some nice beers to have a few drinks. Not spectacular, but a good one to stop by.

I visited the pub on a lunch break from work.I paid around £6 for a red thai curry with rice.The food was brought by a young Thai lady and the taste of curry was very authentic with fresh ingredients.I did not drink anything at the time but the pub seemed to have a warm atmosphere.Will certainly visit again.

Fell in love with this place, quite a small dark bar with a huge variety of rums to try. Authentic Thai food served at a very reasonable price which is in popular demand - getting a table to eat can be a struggle but well worth it.

This place is a favourite haunt. The rum menu is great-a rum for every occasion and knowledgeable staff if you are not sure which one to go for. Even better than the rum is the Thai food - very reasonable prices, prompt service and a wide variety of curries and stir frys to choose from. There is only one let down for this place (and it is getting worse over recent months) and that is the smell from the toilets as you approach them. This place would definitely be 5 stars if only they would clean the toilets!

What a find! We were wondering around Kemp Town looking for somewhere for a quiet drink... On looking at the small wine list, I immediately spotted some quality pub wines that I quite enjoy. The better half prefers a Zinfandel which unfortunately isn't on the list, the pleasant barmaid offered a sip of an alternative which was very much appreciated. Great wine, great beer selection, great staff, great roaring open fire, great pub AND they don't allow kids!! Bloody perfect in our book!
