St Aldates Tavern in Oxford

This was my first pub so take my review with grain of salt but staff were nice, self serve water, shared the calamari with my friend (smaller portion for £8), cozy atmosphere and people were beginning to do trivia night as we left. Nice place to hang out.

Excellent Sunday Roast! A little greasy, but delicious!!! Very good service and the atmosphere is pleasant.

They were out of the only gluten free main on the menu (now that the fish and chips recipe has changed) so my only option was to get a starter (chicken tenders) and a side (cheesy chips). These were labelled as gluten free on the menu but clearly weren’t given my coeliac reaction to them (I’ll spare you the details). The chips were nice enough and the chicken tenders were mediocre so it was a pretty miserable meal to be glutened by. The bartender helping us figure out what I could eat was lovely and had to run back and forth to the kitchen as their allergy information was out of date bless him. Thankfully there was a selection of boardgames we could play while we waited for the disappointing food and could see someone at a nearby table eating the last “gf” chicken schnitzel lol

Amazing way to have a group dinner. Delicious food and all staff were wonderful and extremely helpful.

Fantastic venue, wonderful staff. Nothing was too much trouble. We would definitely visit again and wholeheartedly recommend this venue for private hire for a special celebration

We went for a lunch in the middle of the week, there was a lovely atmosphere with good music in the background. The burger and the chips were UNREAL! So so good 👍🏻 I recommend the jack Daniels and pulled pork burger 🍔

I ate her a sunday roast a few weeks ago and I cannot forget this. The food was excellent! Surely recommended. The personal was great, very kind. They also brought us tap water, which is not that common in a pub. Definetely coming back

Great pub, but very disappointing gluten free options. So I ended up paying for a single plain beefburger with a couple of spoonfuls of mashed potato and peas.......so basically a kids meal !!

We DJed at St Aldates Tavern in Oxford for a corporate Christmas party and had a great time. Brilliant staff and a really nice little venue!

Had a private Christmas function at this pub and it was very good overall. The food was tasty, well presented and for a 3 course meal it was reasonably priced. They had a Christmas menu and I had the smoked salmon, roast turkey then the lemon cheesecake. Would strongly recommend this but there are plenty of other meals that may take your fancy. With most Oxford pubs drinks are pricey but the St Aldates Tavern has a good selection of drinks, alcoholic and non alcoholic. With its location it's not flooded by loads of footfall, rowdy people and the average Oxford nightlife that is on Queen or Cornmarket Street. The pub looks like a traditional public house with a rustic feel. However due to that it's not a spacious pub but it does have a cozy atmosphere to it. The only issue I had was the service, of course they prioritised the bar downstairs for the local punters but it did mean that the service upstairs was sporadic.

Good pub but nowhere near enough food for our private party

I had never tried the typical fish and chips yet. The fish, even if it was battered, melted in the mouth. The delicious potatoes come with a tartar sauce to accompany the dish. We sat in front of the bar, nice decoration, cozy place and good atmosphere.

Sadly bad experience. Booked room upstairs for large family get together. Communication between booking staff in central office and the pub hopeless. Miscommunication on menu choices and drinks. Miscommunication on screen and music use. Wrong number of meals brought out. Wrong drink despite preorder on email, No service - mainly left to our own devices upstairs. Freezing cold. No heating on. Asked but nothing was done about it. Overcharged us in drinks and food. Did nothing to put this right. Massive disappointment. Do not recommend. They don’t seem to care.

I popped in for a quick pint after finding the local beer festival closed due to running out of beer. I wasn’t disappointed. I had a cracking pint of Timothy Taylor’s Landlord even served in the right glass.

This Victorian ale-house is a must-add to any pub crawl; a nice selection of beers on tap (and at a very reasonable price, too), with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and plenty of comfy seating in which to rest your aching feet after a lengthy walk around the city.

Watched the rugby in here. Pleasant atmosphere. Didn't have any food

Charming pub in Oxford. Stopped there on the way back to London for some food and a drink. Great food, friendly atmosphere. Just the hit the spot after a long day of sightseeing.

Brought family from overseas here for their first ever Sunday roast, before dropping them on a bus to the airport. The place is handily located right in the town centre but feels a lot nicer than many places nearby, much less chainy/plasticky with a proper pub vibe. Had a very cosy booth table, drinks were nicely served and the food was great - tried roast beef/pork/chicken and all were excellent, not the most generous but perfectly sized for us (with the addition of the extra pigs in blankets, a great idea). Maybe a few more peas would have been good, but there were no real complaints. One of us had a burger and enjoyed it too. Excellent pub, we all had a great time and I'm sure I'll drop in more often in future.

Great public house in the centre of Oxford! It does great roast dinners and the fish and chips is good too! Has a great selection of free sweets for children and dog biscuits for pets! Excellent pub for watching sports, especially good environment for Rugby!

We had a lunch here today, it was tasty and the size was quite huge.

Good selection of ales and a nice environment inside. Chicken schnitzel looked delicious but had already ordered Mac and cheese which was disappointing as was the chicken burger.

My burger was not cooked enough. I only realized halfway through. I ended up throwing up all night and it is the most obvious cause.

Lovely traditional old fashioned pub. No Tv’s and a selection of board games in window. We had the Sunday roasts, beef and chicken and they were excellent. Friendly staff and an enjoyable visit.

There are 16 different types of beer on tap. These include Benediktiner Hell, Köstrizer, Moretti, Estrella and various English lagers or stout beers.

Burger was great, perfectly cooked, juicy and flavorful. The fish and chips were great! Nice light batter, couldn’t tell it was gluten free! Reasonably priced. Server was nice.

I'm not a veggie as such but fancied a change and had the nut and mushroom wellington. Absolutely delicious and the veg was cooked to perfection. Simply can't fault it at all. I will definitely return soon for Sunday lunch!

Nice pub with an interesting selection of beers to choose from and staff willing to give recommendations. I enjoyed the slightly perfumed IPA. Point to note: We were stopping at Christ Church which is just across the road, and came out for a drink at Old Tom's but were turned away because they strangely stop ✋️ serving around 10pm. Not a problem here.😄

£6 + a pint and can't even wash your hands with soap after a piss. Miserable stuck up people avoid go somewhere else

If you're looking for an authentic English pub meal this is your place. The fish and chips with peas and tartare sauce is to die for. The Mac and cheese bites were good too. Roasted mushrooms and halloumi burger was very tasty. They have a range of beer and other spirits to choose from. We had the Kiwi lime cider, Watermelon lime cider and the strawberry pomegranate cider and all of them were very good as well. With a warm ambience it's a great place to spend time with family and friends over a hearty meal. 😊👍

Make a fuss about being dog friendly, but what they don't tell you is for some inexplicable reason, they're not allowed upstairs (Food is served on both floors as far as I can tell). So a handful of minutes into the World Cup final I'm asked to leave because of my dog. The table was booked for a large group, and it could not move downstairs due to space, so I had to leave. I spoke to the manager who admitted there were no indications on the website that there were any such restrictions, and no signs in the pub itself. Just some inexplicable, unpublished rule. Absolutely appalling customer service, with absolutely no semblance of judgement or compassion. Avoid.

Was able to order food on the app, and food was still being made in the kitchen, but then we got told that the kitchen was closed. Staff then took a very long time to work out how to refund us, telling us to come up to the bar and wasting our time when they could actually process an app refund without us. Really poor service, and no apologies at all for the bad experience. I used to like this pub!

Had the jerk chicken, tasted great but for £16 the portion size was tiny. Nothing worse than paying for a meal and still leaving hungry.

We were trying to find somewhere to eat on our first night and we chose the wrong direction and wandered all around and along the river without finding somewhere. Nearly back to where we were staying and we passed this tavern. The menu was typical pub fair but not just burgers so we gave it a go. Bar staff were very welcoming and friendly, food was good and the bar just busy enough to give it some atmosphere. Very pleased we found it!

Had a fantastic evening attending a private birthday event in the room upstairs - atmospheric cosy space with attentive bar staff made this an exceptional evening- would book this venue for future events based on this positive experience - highly recommend!

We received a friendly welcome on arrival, we hadn't booked, but there were plenty of choices of tables, we were at the pub for lunch. Order food and drinks at the bar, which is absolutely fine. We ordered roast dinners, and a burger, all we're delicious and plentiful, lovely veg with the roast dinners. Amazingly friendly and accommodating staff. Highly recommend a visit to this lovely pub.

Was in Oxford for the UK Seahawkers National Meet which was held in the upstairs room of the pub. Ordered food prior to the evening which arrived a little earlier than would of liked but was delicious all the same, other people’s food the same. Reasonable selection of beers, some people had to go downstairs for a better selection. Definitely visit again when in Oxford

Friendly service, nice restaurant, good food, good beer, what more could you want after a visit to the Oxford open-air museum.

My 2 is based purely on the barman , Preferred chatting to regulars at the bar and serving them before myself although it was clear i was next to be served . Ordered two Hendricks with cucumber 1 came with lemon , 1came with lime 🤔 Neither came with cucumber. Shame because quirky place .

This is an old traditional pub/restaurant slightly to the south of the city centre. The interior reflects the age and is pleasantly comfortable. We visited for lunch where the menu was not extensive, but provided a good choice. Restrictive dietary requirements can also be accomodated. The food quality was very good and the portion size just right for us. The prices were slightly expensive, but perhaps that reflects the current situation. There was not an actual "welcome" on arrival but the subsequent service was friendly and helpful.

This was an amazing pub, and I don't even drink. I had my first fish & chips here alongside an excellent Sunday roast and they even served milk. If I were to revisit Oxford someday, I'll know where to go for some good customer service.

This place is brilliant. There is a great selection of beer, which is also perfectly kept. There was also a good number of people in the pub, but we still got a seat. Great atmosphere. Staff are very friendly and helpful. It’s also in a fantastic location right in the city centre.

Food was ok. Had 4 burgers and beef ones ok but the Korean chicken was not nice at all. They are dog friendly and staff was very nice

Good beer options, charges up quite often. Large upstarts room for sports can get quite busy at 5ish but normally always quick service and a spare spot.

I pop in here when waiting for a bus. Its okay if not a bit soulless but maybe I'm being harsh as dont frequent it enough. £5.55 for a pint of cider is steep. I can get a pint of cider in Wetherspoons for 3 quid. I'd prefer not to drink in Wetherspoons and line Tim's pockets but sadly with cost of living I'm less likely to use pubs like St aldates tavern when there is such a huge price disparity.

Have some good food here. Eating upstairs, because there was a pubquiz down. Food was good and enough. You can first taste your beer before you make a decision. Also nice and friendly personnel who think with you and ask for allergies
