A charming pub in the heart of the city - and a fine example from Oxford's quirky but sophisticated pub scene. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food here - the Gnocci with pesto and mushrooms was an experience beyond typical pub grub.

When their competitors down the street at the Old Tom Pub tried to kick us out for bringing my assistance dog this weekend, we left and walked down the street to this pub instead, where they are both dog friendly and respectful of assistance dogs. I enjoyed the nonalcoholic options. I also had many great vegetarian meals here as a student years ago. This is definitely the pub to go to on St Aldate's!

They were out of the only gluten free main on the menu (now that the fish and chips recipe has changed) so my only option was to get a starter (chicken tenders) and a side (cheesy chips). These were labelled as gluten free on the menu but clearly weren’t given my coeliac reaction to them (I’ll spare you the details). The chips were nice enough and the chicken tenders were mediocre so it was a pretty miserable meal to be glutened by. The bartender helping us figure out what I could eat was lovely and had to run back and forth to the kitchen as their allergy information was out of date bless him. Thankfully there was a selection of boardgames we could play while we waited for the disappointing food and could see someone at a nearby table eating the last “gf” chicken schnitzel lol EDIT: I can’t reply to the comment left by the owner but your email doesn’t exist (not with .com or .co.uk as you said and as your website said)

We went at noon and ordered from the bar tagliat ragu, a remarkable dish and caponata stuffed pepper with vegetables accompanied by a salad with raisins and quinoa, we liked it, but the potatoes are the star, don't skip them, we were very hungry and we didn't have time to photograph the dishes.. The atmosphere is what you expect from a pub, nice music and very polite and helpful staff. Definitely recommend and will visit again. I should note that we went at noon on a Saturday, nevertheless the service was fast. I chose a beer recommended by the bar old Good boy bitter If I remember correctly it was to my taste, they have quite a few to choose from.

Had a private Christmas function at this pub and it was very good overall. The food was tasty, well presented and for a 3 course meal it was reasonably priced. They had a Christmas menu and I had the smoked salmon, roast turkey then the lemon cheesecake. Would strongly recommend this but there are plenty of other meals that may take your fancy. With most Oxford pubs drinks are pricey but the St Aldates Tavern has a good selection of drinks, alcoholic and non alcoholic. With its location it's not flooded by loads of footfall, rowdy people and the average Oxford nightlife that is on Queen or Cornmarket Street. The pub looks like a traditional public house with a rustic feel. However due to that it's not a spacious pub but it does have a cozy atmosphere to it. The only issue I had was the service, of course they prioritised the bar downstairs for the local punters but it did mean that the service upstairs was sporadic.

Brought family from overseas here for their first ever Sunday roast, before dropping them on a bus to the airport. The place is handily located right in the town centre but feels a lot nicer than many places nearby, much less chainy/plasticky with a proper pub vibe. Had a very cosy booth table, drinks were nicely served and the food was great - tried roast beef/pork/chicken and all were excellent, not the most generous but perfectly sized for us (with the addition of the extra pigs in blankets, a great idea). Maybe a few more peas would have been good, but there were no real complaints. One of us had a burger and enjoyed it too. Excellent pub, we all had a great time and I'm sure I'll drop in more often in future.

Make a fuss about being dog friendly, but what they don't tell you is for some inexplicable reason, they're not allowed upstairs (Food is served on both floors as far as I can tell). So a handful of minutes into the World Cup final I'm asked to leave because of my dog. The table was booked for a large group, and it could not move downstairs due to space, so I had to leave. I spoke to the manager who admitted there were no indications on the website that there were any such restrictions, and no signs in the pub itself. Just some inexplicable, unpublished rule. Absolutely appalling customer service, with absolutely no semblance of judgement or compassion. Avoid.

Very quiet for a Friday night. The barman was pleasant enough. It’s just all a bit dull for me. You can’t really see the cartoons as the room is not particularly well lit. The cocktails were fine. We walked through the hotel to the other bar which was slightly better but at £9 for a glass of not cold enough Pinot Grigio in another badly lit room, we left feeling rather conned after they added a service charge as well. . For a large hotel the wine selection by glass is very limited.

This is my favourite Afternoon Tea venue in Oxford, you can't beat it for ambience, price, parking and relaxation plus the food is lovely! Not sure if some of the sandwich choices had been changed for Christmas but they weren't the usual fayre this time. Nevertheless, the team do go out of their way to do what they can for you, they are not hovering over you endlessly and you can get as many refills on the tea etc as you like. I always look forward to going back and I will be looking forward to my next afternoon tea trip back here again!
