We stopped there on a Globus bus tour. Food was amazing and the owner was very nice and friendly. While we didn't stay there, I looked at a room that had the door open. Just a really neat motel in the country. Not a Hyatt by any stretch of the imagination, which, in my opinion made it a place I would like to stay.

Had a lovely three night stay here with our slightly deranged Boxer dog Poppy. The rooms here are absolutely spot on if you are traveling with pooch. Roll straight up to the front door and get in with minimal fuss. Rooms very well set up with TV and coffee making facilities and a kettle. Nice and clean and very comfortable bed. We slept like logs 😀. Now the food. Best mutton curry I've ever eaten, in fact everything we had including ribs, jerk pork, chicken wings and chips were really tasty and served with a smile in a great atmosphere and one of the best countryside views you'll find. The sunsets were incredible. Thank you Kate and Buddy, we will see you again soon. ❤️

I can only re confirm the very positive reviews left by others. We stayed for one night and had dinner in the restaurant which was first class, Buddy the owner, Amelia and Zoe could not do enough for us and made our stay so enjoyable. The room was finished to a very high standard and was spotlessly clean, the queen size bed was comfortable, nothing to complain about. We will definitely return .

My partner and I visited this restaurant due to the good reviews, during a mini break in Illminster. I assume most of the good reviews are referring to the accomodation as this looks nice, however we did not stay, we just ate in the restaurant. The views were quite nice but it was very hot in the conservatory. The food was OK - we had ribs and pork belly - fairly average and the bill came to £55 with drinks. The young waitress was also quite abrupt and acted like she would rather have been anywhere else. No 'thank you' or 'i hope you enjoyed your meal' just pay your bill, and go. The lady on the table next to us also requested gluten free fish and chips and they served her a meal with gluten! Not related to our experience but this is of course completely unacceptable and could result in someone getting very poorly. I begrudge paying a £5 service charge when the service was mediocre at best but they obviously rely on people feeling too uncomfortable to ask for it to be removed. Wouldn't return

Staff were friendly and welcoming, but service was slow as the pub was busy and there appeared to be limited front of house staff. Food was disappointing, with small portions. Jerk chicken and rice were fairly bland, and more watery bbq sauce than what I was expecting. The home-made burger was much better but the chips were not great. Lovely setting in the countryside with a nice outside area. Shame about the food as was looking forward to this, having read recent reviews.

We drove here having seen in a magazine it was of Caribbean influence Initially we were handed a lunch menu of standard pub fair but when asked we were able to choose from a standard menu that did have some dishes on it that I associate with the Caribbean Having ordered Jerk Chicken and having eaten this on many islands I was surprised that it was a breast of chicken in what I would say was BBQ sauce. I am sure the owner will argue different however it was not what I expected and have sampled before When eaten before it was a dry rub and the meat then char grilled So I am confused by this place, I think you need to whole heartedly be of Caribbean influence or run the risk of being another identity restricted pub which sells food which is a shame What probably spoilt our experience was the raised voices from the kitchen when clearly people were arguing behind the scenesI don’t buy food and expect a side show and overall this missed the mark for me

We were visiting friends in the area, and as this place had a good TA ranking, we decided to book a table for 4. This was done 1 week prior to our arrival.Upon arrival on the Saturday evening at 7.30 we were informed that 5 items on the menu were unavailable or only one portion left.Although the establishment has since apologised, this was a big disappointment to us and I certainly feel that they could have either telephoned us in advance or sent someone to the local supermarket at some stage during the day to ‘stock up’; even a pub classic like fish and chips was unavailable!Having expressed my dissatisfaction, it must be said that the staff on duty at front of house were very nice and did their best to make up for the management failures. The food that we ate was very good, the choice of wine by the glass pleased all in our group. The overall cost of the meal seemed reasonable, and were it not for the menu choice failures, I would certainly have given at least a 4* rating.Would I go back? Yes, I’d give them another chance next time I visit!

We went to the Flying Fish for the first time on Sunday with my daughter and some friends. The carvery was really good. The choice of meat and veg was really excellent and the turkey was cooked to perfection. My daugher, on booking the table had mentioned that it was her Dads birthday and the staff at The Flying Fish went above and beyond to make the meal special. They had gone to the trouble to decorate the table and had even put up some balloons. They had allowed my daughter to bring in a birthday cake and they lit the candle and even, to my husbands embarrssment put the bithday song on as they brought out the cake! The food was good but what makes this little restaurant special is the family feel and the staff. Thank you all at The Flying Fish. We will be back.

The pub is located in Ashill near Ilminster and a fair amount of the food has a Caribbean influence. Accommodation is available with 8 en-suite rooms available. We visited The Flying Fish on a Saturday night. To play it safe we phoned ahead to book a table but as it transpired we needn’t have bothered. I think the bad weather kept everyone home. However I would suggest a booking- just incase. The staff were very friendly but were very quick to point out they only had one Lamb Shank and one Beef Burger left. Thankfully neither of us wanted one of these and we opted for the rump steak and the home made chilli. Portion size was good and cooked very well. We both opted for desserts: Chocolate Fudge Cake and a Sticky Toffee Pudding. Again a very good portion and tasted wonderful. On the whole, a lovely meal and very friendly staff. The decor was pretty and subtle lifting gave a cosy feel. My main criticism is that to be short of food on a Saturday night doesn’t show great forward planning. I realise we were there in adverse weather conditions and to give them the benefit of doubt, maybe their supplier had let them down. The only other point is that the car park was in complete darkness. A light to help you see where you are walking would be most beneficial.

We have just returned from overnight stop at The Flying Fish and would really recommend you give it a try. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. The accommodation is spacious and clean, bathroom and bed were huge! Thought the cafetiere was a really nice touch and we are pleased to report, they are genuinely dog friendly. We ate in the pub and can also report our food was really hot and just as important, extremely tasty. We thought the menu was great, good variety and choice, without being overwhelming in choices. Our breakfast was also of a similar high standard, good quality produce and we really enjoyed it. Again, everyone so friendly and nothing too much trouble. Even the dog got a couple of breakfast biscuits! Thank you for making us so welcome. Would recommend to anyone coming to the area.

We have just returned from two nights at the Flying Fish. We wanted to find a place where New Year's Eve fireworks would be minimal as one of our dogs is terrified of them. We didn't hear a single one leaving us and our dogs to enjoy the celebrations. We were warmly welcomed by all of the staff. We both ate the mutton curry which was delicious and I drank the local cider which was excellent and Jane drank white wine. All was reasonable price. The accommodation was warm and clean. The room was large, bed really comfortable. Each morning we were treated to a great breakfast. A great place that we will definitely return to.

Well folks if you fancy a departure from normal pub fayre look no further than The Flying Fish. There is a selection of traditional Caribbean dishes mixed in with some pub stalwarts. My wife would recommend the Lamb Shanks, myself the Mutton Curry (which I found a touch dry for my palate I did love the Acee and Salt Fish starter. Our hosts were extremely friendly and generous on our anniversary with a glass of Prosecco on the house! I am keen to return and try the Jerk Chicken. The pub also enjoys spectacular views of the Blackdown Hills. It's a winner,

I have visited the pub when it was under previous management as the Square and Compass and it was always adequate for my needs. The Flying Fish is so much more. The pub is less cluttered and the food incredible - the mutton curry is something that I still dream about! The rooms are clean, bright and very well maintained. A major improvement is the reliable wi-fi and smart TV's as it was always a bit hit and miss before. All in all, Buddy and Kate worked hard to ensure we all had a perfect evening ....and we did. I am seriously considering returning just to enjoy the ambience again and another plate of mutton curry!

Brilliant overnight stay en route back to Kent after our holiday in Exmoor. Incredibly spacious room with one of the biggest emperor beds ever! And extremely comfortable too. Beautifully appointed en suite full bathroom with large walk in wet area. Excellent pub restaurant with varied menu which was delicious and well priced. The owners are a lovely couple who were very welcoming and friendly. Lovely to discover I had many connections with Buddy - what a small world! Hector our Labrador also very well looked after. Highly recommend and would definitely return. Thank you Buddy and Kate!

My daughter and I popped on a recommendation. We both had starters and couldn't resist a dessert too. I was particularly pleased with the presentation of the ackee and saltfish starter. We found the pub very welcoming and clean. We immersed ourselves view from the conservatory. We will be going back, as we would love to try the jerk dishes.

We visited as an adult foursome to stay overnight in two rooms. we arrived before the proper check in time and met an absolute whirlwind of a lady! we were sent dizzy as she rushed to make our rooms ready for us despite our being early and even offered to open the conservatory up for us to sit in while we waited. a very short time later our rooms were ready while said whirlwind went to open the bar. we enjoyed a coffee and a delicious sandwich (served with chips, yum) before heading off into Ilminster for the day. we returned at just after 5.30 to find a happy hour in progress in the pub where there was a great selection of wines beers and ciders awaiting us. a couple of drinks and then off to the immaculately clean rooms to change and a relaxing shower before dinner. the menu had a wide range of English and Carribean choices which is unusual and intriguing in an English country pub. all was made clear(er) when we met the Barbadian owner Buddy. we ordered lovely duck pate and ackee and saltfish for starters and then 2 steaks and 2 mutton curry for mains. unfortunately the steaks had run out that evening so the others plumped for jerk chicken. DELICIOUS and well worth a visit just to try that. chocolate fudge cake and mango cheesecake followed which were also great and the meal rounded off with coffee and Mount Gay Barbados rum. a lovely comfortable nights sleep and then a delicious full english breakfast with juice coffee and toast (and marmite for the lovers). Buddy took the time to chat to us and show us round the wedding barn which would be well worth considering for any events. nothing was too much trouble throughout our stay and particular thanks given to Monica, Mimi, Buddy, chef and of course 'whirlwind' . you may wonder about the reference to '% peas' in the recommended dishes below but all i will say is you have to visit and ask to try them yourself..........................

I haven't been to the Square and Compass for a while so was a little concerned when I heard it had changed hands. I went for lunch today and was delighted to find it is still a special place. Yes, the decor has changed but for the better as it is much more light and airy. The sandwich I had was enormous and very tasty yet incredibly well priced,, excellent value for money. The ingredients were clearly locally sourced with flavoursome tomatoes that took me back to my childhood! I notice there are some Caribbean influences on the menu now so look forward to sampling those next time.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

It is unusual to come across a meal where there is nothing positive to say about it. We had four roasts and all agreed it was the worst, overpriced food we had had in a pub, restaurant or even home cooked. The waitress and my friends could not tell if the meat was lamb or beef, whichever it was, it was dry and had no taste. The Yorkshire puddings were small circles of stodge - I have had pancakes with more rise. To accompany the very small offering was hard cauliflower, carrots, frozen peas, a tiny square of stuffing, and a few potato wedges which had had a glimpse of the roasting tin, but was not on intimate terms with it. I would have thought that a roast dinner would have to have roast potatoes as a minimum requirement, The portions were small, there was no taste, it was cooked very badly and it cost £10.95 each! As we were hungry we had pudding. I so wish we had saved our money - Lemon Torte was like a value range pudding from Aldi, only without the flavour. Coffee we thought, no one can muck up coffee.. yes they can. It took forever to arrive despite there being few covers at that time. I don't know why we bothered to ask for different coffees - 2 x flat whites, 1 x cappuccino and 1 x Americano. We got 3 x Americanos and what may have been something similar to a flat white if I was being charitable. We were all so looking forward to this meal and making it a regular meeting spot, but had all agreed before we left the pub that we never wanted to go there again.

Spent a couple of days enjoying the friendly hospitality of new hosts Buddy and Kate. Food was always excellent, and the breakfasts outstanding! Great views across the hills, although the weather could have been better! Sunday roast was awesome: best roast lamb I've ever tasted. Rooms were comfortable and had just had brand new TVs installed. Hope to return to catch a live show later in the summer. Many, many thanks.

The welcome on the Thursday evening was a cold one, and it felt like we were an inconvenience. Maybe because we were the only ones in there. More reason in my eyes to engage and smile. Its sad to see the slow decline of The Poppe. The place is deserted and in need of TLC. The excuses get boring quite frankly and the lack of reviews and cars in the car park is evident. Is there time left to save the pub? Not sure now.

We came for the adult panto and decided to get a bite to eat afterwards. The staff were really nice and helpful and managed to fit us in even though all the other tables were booked. Food was fantastic and a great price. Definitely will be back!
