Came in for Sunday roast, was expecting the usual pub experience. Boy was I wrong! Everything was great - staff friendly and attentive, yet not overbearing. The food was the big highlight. Perfect sized portions and excellent flavours. They definitely have a chef in the kitchen and not just a pub cook. Will be back. Tried many places in Kingston / Surbiton area but this one takes the crown. Also, who ever has done the recent renovations on this place deserves to be on Grand Designs. Go here NOW!

I just wanted to write in to say thank you to the entire team for making my 83 year old mum’s Mother’s Day so very special. Right from the booking process, to the welcome we got as we came in, the service was exemplary. Mia, Evie, Luke and every single member of staff were attentive, kind, sensitive and a joy to be around. What a lovely atmosphere!! I saw them interacting with customers positively. The food was fresh, excellent ingredients and expertly made. Choice of drinks was plentiful. And the lovely flowers were an added bonus! Mamma was over the moon. We shall be back soon.

We came today for Mother’s Day lunch, the pub was really busy as expected! Our server Evie was very cheery & helpful & the food was really good. My vegetarian beetroot Wellington in particular was delicious. Service was quick! The only negative is that we were seated at the back of the pub right by the door and unfortunately people are constantly going in and out to smoke, blasting us with cold damp air every few minutes. This isn’t the pubs fault obviously but if we visited again I would specify not sitting at that table.

Hadn't been here for a couple of years even though we live locally so decided to give it a try after the recent refurb. Pub looked great as we walked in on Saturday evening but we didn't receive the warm welcome that everyone had commented on. We ordered drinks at the bar and a Dorset coppa to nibble on whilst we chose our mains. I envisaged a small plate of thinly sliced coppa as is normal with all types of charcuterie, perhaps with a little bread, but it was instead served thick sliced and heated up, seemingly under a grill or in the oven. Didn't know what to make of it really! Never, ever seen it served like that in England, Italy or anywhere else for that matter..totally bemused. I had the chicken schnitzel for my main which was good with the fried egg and capers, Holstein style without the anchovies. It was enjoyable apart from having to discard around 2 dozen capers as there were way, way too many on the plate. The cabbage and leek sides were nice but not plentiful considering the cost. All in all a nice evening with nice drinks, pleasant staff and a good atmosphere. Please keep the fire going on those cold evenings though! Still wondering about the coppa! 🤔

Sunday Lunch at 2pm. Perfect time. It was of course busy very busy. Hadn't eaten in the pub for a while because the food hasn't been decent. But that had changed today. It was a tasty and a good roast today. I would have given it excellent but the pudding choices weren't very good at all. Apple and pear tart they are trying to hard. I would be more than happy with a sticky toffee pud!

Gosh, where to start? Firstly it was by chance we booked. Gorgeous urban pub with generous, funky but perfect ambiant lighting. Lots of wooden tables all with dried pretty flowers, condiments and fresh water. Very friendly waitress and bar staff. Great selection of ales, wine and soft drinks. Amazing menu. My daughter devoured her burger which was gone in a flash- tasty juicy and no fatty bits. My husband and I had the veggie cauliflower, applewood cheese and mushroom pie. It was beautifully presented, on a bed of veg and a side of crispy new potatoes. It has to be my favourite vegetarian dish I’ve ever had and would make it my last meal ever if I had to choose. It was a faultless dinner. After a great mains we just had to try desert. The bread and butter pudding an unbelievable combination of white chocolate and rosemary and the salt chocolate mouse exquisite. In this day and age a meal out it a rare treat for us but this was worth every penny. Well done and thank you Spring Grove 10/10

The team were incredibly accomodating and helpful - shout out to Mia and Dan for making our evening super special. The food was superb - we had the ham hock main, which was the best ham hock I've had in a long time. My partner went for the new cider battered fish and chips - he's gluten intolerant, I love the fact that their change the recipe to be gluten friendly! We visited today for Sunday dinner and booked a table for 2.30 for 4 people. We ordered our food reasonably quickly, unfortunately the Pork belly was sold out as was the chicken so one of our party ended up with the vegetarian option and 3 of us had the Beef. Our drinks took a while to arrive but having to wait an hour for our food order was really not on. We asked twice about our food and were told we were next but that wasn’t the case. After complaining and pointing out we had been waiting an hour the staff were very apologetic and the young waiter said our meal would be free as well as a round of drinks. We did pay for the 2 rounds of drinks we had and the meal was indeed free, I’m pretty sure the waiter concerned got into trouble for this!! It wasn’t his fault… not enough staff and clearly not enough food was available. The Beef was really tasty and the vegetarian dinner was good too. We won’t be returning here, the wait just wasn’t worth it.

The pub itself and the staff were excellent. However, we all felt the menu was a little odd and we all struggled to find something we liked. My husband had the chicken escalope which he felt was swimming in oil. And infact, was very large - too large. It needed to be served with vegetable or a small salad. We all felt the same about this. Who wants a huge chicken escalope an egg and nothing else. Of course you can order more vegetables but this is additional. My friend tried to order vegetables but this was off the menu anyway!

Ask anyone when walking around Kingston what their favourite pub is, and while their special places may vary, a vast majority will say the "nicest" is The Spring Grove. Off the main road that connects Kingston to Surbiton, round the back of the University is a quaint area that doesn't look like it belongs. Old shop fronts - a bakery, an offy, a church, terraced houses, a sort of rural calmness prevails. First discovered on a crawl a few years back, it won me over with their gigantic garden (heated and covered), which is amazing when not resembling a crèche. On repeated visits, the snug was a prime viewing spot for the weekend football, no longer showing, due to lack of interest and an ownership change. Which is a shame. But nothing is too much trouble for the staff who work here, a refreshing positivity that we all sorely need. It feels like it's split into 4-5 areas, the stunning sky lights dominating the two main restaurant spaces, the booth filled kitchen fronted area usually occupied by swaths of families, and front area with a few TVs taken up by a much more varied crowd. It used to get full on weekends, but I've not seen it too busy for a while. Beer wise it's the usual Young's suspects. Young's Ales and Neck-Oil on tap seem to be the go-tos mixed among the macro lagers. Hepcat is a nice addition, as well as a varied alcohol-free range. The Spring Grove was probably responsible for over half my consumed Neck Oils a few years ago, which now seem to mostly taste like soap wherever I go. Food, it's pub fare but very good. Proper hefty portions, filling and tasty. Christmas day menu was a belter when we were still mid-covid. I could bang on for days about the pigs in blankets in yorkshires. History wise there's not a whole lot distinctly notable, but it's still *old*. The venue itself dates back to 1896, as part of the Spring Grove estate developed by Mr Palmer Porter, designed as an area with affordable homes for those working in Kingston. There's a real community feeling here that is written about in most references to the area, it does feel like a space with its own identity. Young's have a real talent for making pubs "nice", and this is one of the nicest. Despite the majority of this review being adapted from over a year ago, I still love coming here, and recommend you do too if you're in the area.

I visited with two friends on Friday evening. First impressions from the outside, and when entering the pub, were positive. A lovely pub with plenty of room. We were seated in the main restaurant and ordered 3 starters to begin with. Two of them were inedible, the Courgette & Tenderstem Broccoli Bhajis tasted odd and just failed to live up to any kind of taste expectations. The other starter of Beetroot Hummus, arrived looking like it had been squeezed out of a packet and left on the side to congeal. The taste was very disappointing. Only one bite was had of each dish, it was so bad. When our dishes were eventually cleared, after having to hunt someone down to order an alternative dish, the server did not comment on the full plates or ask if everything was ok. We didn’t mention it as to be honest one of wanted to just order something else and eat and go. The polenta chips were ordered and for what they were, it was ok. When paying the bill, we passed on our feedback and again mentioned the fact that she removed 2 full plates and didn’t think to ask if all was ok! Our feedback will be passed on, we were told. Highly doubtful, as the bill was paid in full and she wasn’t overly concerned. It’s a shame as I would visit the pub again for drinks but definitely not the food. The 3 stars is generous and is for the one starter that was eaten and the pub itself.

This pub definitely has its pros and cons. On the positive side, the outdoor area is quite nice and provides a great atmosphere for enjoying a drink or a meal with friends. However, I found the prices to be quite steep and not entirely worth it. While the food and drinks were decent, they didn't quite live up to the high price point. Overall, I would say that this pub is a decent option if you're looking for a nice outdoor area to spend time in, but be prepared to pay a bit more than you might at other establishments.
