Spring Espresso in York

I only leave a review if something is excellent or really bad. This coffee was fantastic, smooth and to the temperature I asked for! Don't go to the awful mainstreams , come here. The ginger cake was also exceptional 👌

The smell of coffee is simply enchanting, wish I could spend the whole day there 😆

This place has potential but is mediocre at best. We got a bad first impression when we walked in and no one greeted us or acknowledged we were there. Then sat down for a while and figured out we have to order at the bar as it’s not table service. Big portions of food but unfortunately very bland/tasteless. Tables were sticky/dirty and the place just lacks atmosphere. Overall a very disappointing experience.

Nice spot for breakfast in the city center. My wife and I stopped for breakfast on monday morning. I had the French toast and my wife had the eggs florentine with a tea/coffee and orange juice. The French toast dish was delightful as was the flat white coffee I had 👌 The eggs florentine could have done with more seasoning and unfortunately the spinach was 'gritty' presumably not being washed adequately. Otherwise a very pleasant experience.

Found this great place on the morning of the Yorkshire marathon and it was wicked weather so very grateful to find a seat here. Lovely friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere The food was fabulous, the American pancakes were huge & fluffy, the sausage & egg muffin and egg spinach and mushroom breakfast muffins were gorgeous. We all enjoyed the coffee also. There were some delicious looking home bakes on display too.

One of the best (if not the best) croque monsieur I have ever had. I will never forget the size of the ration either. And the flat white that I had was pretty good, too. Plus comfortable chairs, nice atmosphere…five well deserved stars to this coffee shop. Bravo!

Disappointing visit with family. Nice coffee and raspberry & lemon cake very tasty but nut brownie over baked and service not friendly or welcoming. Mix match of decor & furniture, a little scruffy in places, some sticky tables. Not somewhere we’d go back to, next door looked a lot nicer!

We waited outside for a table as it looked really busy. We were soon seated by a waitress that seemed more interested in chatting to colleagues and friends than actually seating us! We ordered our food and a couple of coffees. One of the coffees was great, the other was wrong! They eventually changed this. The 2 Croque Monsieur arrived, after 2 bites it was clear they were inedible and falling apart. The ham was the cheapest wafer thin own brand budgeted supermarket processed stuff. The cheese, which there was lots of it was tasteless and again suspect budget supermarket own brand. We gave our feedback to our waitress who just shrugged her shoulders, we just left! York deserves better!

Started queuing up for Rise, then noticed this place right next door. Delicious food (French toast) and coffee. Nicely spaced tables (we got a window seat, great for people watching). Very friendly staff and quick service. A great start to the day and much better than queuing!

Lovely little place - we went after our usual wasn’t open. It’s an order at the till and pre pay kind of place but that wasn’t made obvious when we came in as who I can assume was the manager was too busy chatting ! We looked at our menus and went up to order - the poor waitress tried to tell the manager that we were there but he just told her he would get to it and carried on chatting. He was quite rude to her and it was a little uncomfortable We had the spring breakfast and the spring veggie breakfast. The spring breakfast was delicious and very well priced. The spring veggie breakfast was cold.. eggs very under done and under seasoned. Such a shame ! Felt so uncomfortable with the manager that didn’t complain. Coffee was very good - I would advise coming for a coffee and a cake but leave the hot food !

I'm sorry but the size of the bacon/egg muffin is completely out of touch for 6 quid... Omelette inside totally tasteless as well

This place has really good coffee and a lovely selection of cakes. The cafe has two units so there was plenty of space when we visited. Service was friendly and quick!

The Yorkshire Rarebit was yummy, maybe a bit too rich. Hot chocolate was outstanding, especially as it had chocolate foam.

This might be the only open one for Sunday early morning breakfast, food is great, the waiter (should be the boss) is so handsome, will come back again, loved everything about this place

We had a fabulous breakfast Bircher here, with a good coffee. I would love to go back. Breakfasts looked good as did everything I saw come out from the kitchens.

Nice coffee and hot chocolate. Beautiful croissant 🥐, but not baked at the cafe. Overcooked poached eggs 🥚. The portion of the spring breakfast needs a smaller portion of bread, good-cooked sausages and bacon. Too much black pepper on top of the plate, impossible to eat, not worth it 13£, need to improve chef skills. The porridge was cooked correctly. The waiting time to way long. P.S. Miserable staff and you are charged a tip before having the experience. The mens urinal is right next to the paper towels (no regard to health)

Best soy flat white in York I'd say. Friendly and efficient staff.

We came based on good reviews but we're disappointed unfortunately. The flat white coffee milk art was good but lacking flavour in the coffee. We had a couple of cakes; a brownie, which was just ok, and a bakewell tart which was dry and lacking flavour. There didn't seem to be a lot of interest in seeing us come, or go.

Boy oh boy. What a place. Me and my laptop had a lovely time drinking lattes and connecting to the WiFi. What made the experience extra special was when the lovely behatted gentleman behind the counter (the manager perhaps?) made eye contact with me and told me that he really liked my vibe, which made me feel very welcome and added a certain je ne se quoi to my experience. I will come back. Every day

I’ve visited spring espresso a few times and have always had a lovely time. The coffee is excellent the atmosphere is very friendly but busy, always a buzz and they seem to have a lot of regular custom. A lovely added touch is the man remembered me from previous visits knew my drink and offered me a loyalty card with stamps from coffees I’d bought before!

Shhh, don't tell anyone else it's so good! 😋😜 Great coffee and brunch options, always popular with the locals.

We ordered latte, egg florentine, pancakes, sweets, and bread. The food is delicious, the place is crowded and cramped but over all good and they have bruch also. I recomended it.

The environment is comfortable, the coffee is very good, but the toast is not good enough .

It's a shame I can't leave a review without a rating, but it was ludicrous for a family of four to be turned away 30 minutes before closing. All we wanted was two teas. We ended up going next door (very nice) and when we walked past after 5 o'clock and see customers still sat there.

The food arrived after 30 minutes. The egg of the eggs benedict was not few but hard. The bread was an untoasted slice

We had a full English at 8am when they opened on a Saturday. The barrista was lovely and kind. The breakfast was great quality. The lattes were delicious and a work of art. Highly recommend!

£16.50 for a small breakfast and a pot of tea. Disgraceful. Most of the plate was taken up by a portobello mushroom.

I tried their filter coffee (v60) it was delicious and smooth, definitely worth it

This review relates to the coffee only. We ordered an espresso on their guest blend and flat white on their house blend. Both were undrinkable.

This coffee shop is not recommendable. It’s actually bad. Working here with a laptop all the time. Not today. Manager really unfriendly.

Visited at about 9am on Easter Monday. It was busy so there was a 20 minute wait for food. It was definitely worth the wait though - everything was cooked to perfection! The staff were lovely too. I'll deffo be back.

Pretty good cafe to visit for brunch / a small snack. Our party ordered the pancakes with bacon and the french toast, the french toast was lovely. Coffee is nice here too.

Coffee very good. Large croissant although a bit overbaked. Excellent that there was no music. It's often difficult to have a conversation when there's loud music; not very relaxing.

Met here with a group of friends. Coffee & food were excellent but found it very difficult to have a conversation because of the acoustics. Will return but not with a group.

One overdone & one underdone poached egg. Staff didn’t seem that bothered. Think they may have been understaffed as 20min wait for food.

Nice food, the male staff could be a bit more friendly. Portions of some meal could be a bit bigger. But overall a nice and affordable meal.

Coffee is great, but not a great atmosphere to drink it in. The manager? was swearing at a staff member about some problem with a previous customer. This altercation could be heard by everyone in the half of the cafe near the till. Not what you want to hear when you’ve popped in for a coffee. I won’t be going back. Very unprofessional.

Great porridge with fresh fruit and excellent coffee.

Met a friend here at a cafe I'd never been to or been on my radar. It's large and not cramped with plenty of space for chatting. The convivial atmosphere made a warm and welcoming pace on a winter's day. Pay at counter and service to table worked well. Little choice on sweet stuff for my sweet toothed friend. But my hot chocolate hit the spot. Toilets are available.

Amazing coffee, great breakfast

I'm afraid it's lost the intimacy and attention to detail of former years. The suspended ceiling with LED panels give it the feel of a tired office cafeteria.
 We ordered 2x flat white, 1x americano, 1x decaf cappuccino, and 3x hot chocolate.
 The flat whites tasted ok, but the milk art on one was very slap-dash. Had to go back to ask for chocolate sprinkles for the cappuccino.
 The chocolate was nothing special (powdered, not melted) and the kids would have liked the option of cream and marshmallows.
 Last time I was here I had to send back a stack of pancakes because they were uncooked, and far from fluffy.
 Service then and now was curt and slow. With the pancake episode. It was almost as if it was my fault.
 Expansion is not always a good thing. Definitely not the best in York any more. Roberto and Chocolate & Co are much better.
 I have a few full loyalty cards, but apart from take-outs I don't think I'll be bringing people here again. Sad.

Lovely to see this cafe so busy! Food was amazing! (Hummus eggs)!! Great tasting coffee! Reasonably priced! The staff were helpful and pleasant! Definitely visit again when we visit York!!

Went for breakfast this morning. Absolutely delicious! Husband had full English and I had egg and bacon sandwich. Gorgeous food and coffee was velvety and smooth. Will be back soon!

Been calling at lendal shop for years,highly reccomend. Fossgate shop ambience like a bus station cafe, coffee was very average,service & cake excellent though

I live in York but haven’t been this side of town for a while. I was out shopping so popped in for coffee and breakfast. Luke warm coffee served quite quickly. Then a long long wait for breakfast. Then a bowl of porridge arrived. I’d ordered a full English. Further delay. Eventually it arrived. Bacon burnt and overcooked poached eggs. No sign of any customer service or care. This place used to stand out as a good place to go. Now it’s fallen into just very very average. There are so many better places to go in York so not sure why you’d bother with this.

I have been a regular visitor for a long time the service has always been excellent so I took a few friends for coffee and cake they were impressed and will now become regular visitors I need gluten free cake and wasn't let down by it and my friends loved the cake I would recommend this coffee shop to anyone

Stopped by for a quick breakfast. Worst pancakes ever. Too thick, uncooked in the middle, we hardly ate any. Too busy to complain at the time.

I had a pleasant experience at Spring. Prompt service. Quiet, clean, and modern environment. Good coffee. Pretty basic breakfast sandwich, but overall really nice. I'd return!

Absolutely amazing cooked breakfast £12.50 but worth every penny. Good strong coffee. No syrups but that's not a bad thing.

Stumbled upon Spring and ventured in. So glad we did! The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. Our food was brilliant!! The Croc Monsieur was particularly good.

We came here for breakfast two days in a row while staying in york. Coffee was one of the best I’ve ever had! The food was good, I had a full English and pancakes and my girlfriend had the French toast on both days. Service was very friendly and they even remembered us on the second day.

My expectation for the coffee was high unfortunately it wasn’t met. The atmosphere was ok. Staff is not too much friendly. Overall, it wasn’t a good experience at all.

Cooked breakfast was one if the worst I've had, bacon seemed like it'd been boiled, sausages were only browned on one side and both poached eggs were raw which meant I got raw egg whites all over the rest of my food when I cut into them

Visited Spring today for lunch, enjoyed the coffee and Yorkshire Rarebit, but come on,£10.50 for a small slice of sourdough topped by an agreeable mix of cheese sauce with a few salad leaves with balsamic! Afraid there was no value there, should have been two slices of sourdough at least. Don’t want to be negative, but afraid the value was just not there.

Just visited today and the girl behind the counter was quite rude. Just stared at me blankly and once I’d ordered instructed me “move over there” pointing to the side. Won’t be visiting again.nice coffee though.

It is a very nice place and the staff is really helpful & courteous. I and Aseem had a fabulous time. We had cappuccinos ☕ & mozzarella, tomato & pesto sauce sandwiches 🥪❤️

Good quality brownies and coffee.

A busy little cafe which we last visited three ago and returned every morning for breakfast. When we revisited this month, they had expanded into the shop next door and doubled their floor space. The menu looked just as good so we sat down and waited…. I eventually went to the counter to ask if we had been over looked as no one had come to take our order. The tall man behind the counter,wearing shorts and a baseball cap, informed me that I had to ‘order at the counter like everybody else”. I was very taken aback but because I’m a polite person I apologised and placed my order. When I sat down at our table we looked in vain at the menu and round the walls to see if there was any information telling customers to go and place orders at the counter and couldn’t see anything anywhere. The conclusion I have to come to is that the man doesn’t want tourists using his cafe and that with an attitude like that, he shouldn’t be working in hospitality at all. All he needed to say was that you order at the counter without the sarcasm at the end. The actual food was very tasty but unfortunately, like so many places nowadays, the coffee was lukewarm and I’d finished it by the time the food was served. With the huge choice of indie cafes in the Fossgate alone, we did not and will not return.

Nice atmosphere and good quality sausage and bacon but the Ultimate English Breakfast didn’t come with baked beans! Which we didn’t realise until it turned up. When asked if we could order some we were told we would have to wait so it would turn up in half an hour! How can you call it an English breakfast with no beans?! When I tried to order some was told I would have to wait, shocked by the lack of customer service and understanding from the boss. The wait staff were nice and friendly though. Unfortunately some of our poached eggs were undercooked and snooty which was disappointing. The coffee and tea were nice, but just very disappointed, as it ruined an otherwise nice experience.

Keep going back, I live in York area and this is my favourite coffee shop food options are great and healthy food also available if you want it

I’ve been here a couple of times but both times the staff have been incredibly rude. I have stood by the counter waiting to see if I can get a seat and both times there’s been over 3 people in the area but they seem to ignore you for quite a long period of time. I understand it can get busy but a simple be with you in a moment would be fine.

Chris Pantylous is a meanie and he needs to stop picking on my friend Shaun who is the best barista in York. Get a life, Chris Pantylous.

I've been going to Spring on Fossgate for a few years and although the coffee is great, I can't help but notice that one staff member called Shaun seems to be unusually arrogant and temperamental.. he obviously likes some customers and dislikes others..I'm presuming he's a manager because he's rude to some of his colleagues and seems to get away with it. I'm surprised the owners put up with him.. I love going to Spring, but because of shaun I don't go in as much and I've heard others say the same... What a shame!

Had breakfast here twice, both times really great. Staff were all great, coffee was very good and we all enjoyed our food. Big shout out to the bacon and egg muffin which was really awesome. Highly recommended.

Had breakfast here and went for cake and coffee also. Breakfast is strong and coffee is just as strong. They don't do syrups for the coffee so a very purist cup of coffee for those that enjoy it.

Sorry. But the drinks today took 20 mins to be served, admittedly it was busy. My coffee was warm not hot. My friend had tea that was fine. Usually it's lovely here.

Came here with big hope for a well brewed coffee and I'm not disappointed. The barista did good job brewing fantastic coffee. I received good explanation of what's available and the drinks were served promptly. So pleased with coffee that we've ordered another one. (update - with having more of the same food or drink the satisfaction drops down however the second coffee tasted even better than the first one - so glad we stayed longer) Will come back for a cup every time when I visit York again

Beautiful coffee and the most sumptuous lemon crumb slice. Also, service was incredibly friendly and I would return again in a heartbeat.

I got yummylicious (yummy & delicious) pancakes and it came with Nutella and bananas. You get lots and the staff are very friendly The grownups enjoyed there meals and coffee and there's a lot of options of soft drinks. I suggest coming here if you want a lovely meal

We were looking for a nice place for a couples breakfast and left disappointed, with a foul taste. First of all the coffee was cloudy and had bits floating in the top of the drink. Secondly after ordering a variety of dishes from the menu, the eggs avocado arrived. The avocado was hard and bitter. The poached eggs on all dishes were raw and had snotty whites. The sourdough was burnt and stale. Overall the food was served cold and was not enjoyable. The service was next to nothing, no one checked back to see how the food was. I do not recommend.

Lovely independent cafe - granola bar was fab - coffee really good - and flexible with menu to offer us exactly the meal my daughter wanted. Highly recommended !

I stopped into Spring Espresso with my mom on our way out of York for a quick coffee and pastry for takeaway a few days ago. My cappuccino was great, but the croissant was so amazing I haven’t stopped thinking about it! It was the butteriest, flakiest, most delightful treat. Eating this croissant felt so luxurious, even though I had to eat it in the car and made a mess. The bottom part was crunchy, crispy, and melted in my mouth. I feel like I can still taste it. I really believe this was the best butter croissant I’ve had. My mom ordered the almond croissant and said it was the best she’s had too! It was such an unexpected surprise and I will never forget it. Thank you!!!

Came across Spring Espresso after looking for somewhere to have a drink, as it was pouring it down. Nice layout and wasn't too busy when we went in, managed to get near the window which was a great spot to people-watch. I didn't have anything to eat, so I cannot comment on that part. But it seems like a great place to relax and catch up with friends, or simply take the weight off your feet a little, as you watch the world go by. 👍🏻

An outstanding coffee shop with excellently trained baristas who know how to make superb espresso based drinks! They have wide selection of coffee and cakes. They also have coffee equipment that you can buy and beans you can buy as well. I have not tried their food but the menu does look good. They can be counted on to make an excellent coffee every time!

Called in as we were passing - very helpful and friendly staff making superb coffee. Small and welcoming - lovely, refreshing drink. Great atmosphere.

My friend and I popped in here after having an awful breakfast coffee elsewhere a few hours earlier. The staff were lovely and the coffee was one of the nicest that I had on this break to York. I would highly recommend it.
