Spring Espresso - Lendal in York

Sitting in the window you have a high definition wide screen to view the characters coming into York centre from near and far. Oh the coffee is grand too, of course. Friendly staff. Enjoy!

Very disappointing. Had pancakes bacon and maple syrup. Came lathered in icing sugar (unnecessary no?). Pancakes were doughy, bacon was ordinary. Just no care and no creativity. Had versions of this dish multiple times in multiple places all over the world. It can be excellent. This is how English food gets such a bad rap.

Had a great breakfast here that got us ready for the rest of the day. Staff were very friendly and the food was fresh and taisty.

This is the best coffee in York by far, but be warned if you order food it takes forever. We waited 40 mins for poached eggs on toast, finished coffee 20 mins previously. It’s a shame as this would be my favourite place otherwise

All the other breakfast places near us did not open until after 10am. Weird. We ended up at Spring Espresso and it was fantastic. The owner and staff were friendly and efficient. All the food and drinks were delicious and served quickly. We are headed back tomorrow morning.

Came over from Blackpool to catch up with Steve, who runs Spring Espresso, we worked together many years ago. I have to say that regardless of knowing Steve, this was the best coffee I've had. Far better than any of the chain coffee shops, and the sausage ciabatta was lush. Well worth the journey. Will definitely be back soon.

Just visited the Fossgate Spring Expresso. On ordering we were told that there would be a 30 minute wait however after waiting over 45 minutes we asked one of the waitresses for a progress on our order. She went to investigate, came back 5 minutes later with no explanation and continued clearing the tables. Waiting a further 5 minutes, still nobody came to explain/apologise. It was only when we went to the counter asking for a refund that we were told our order was missed. We understand that they were busy, all it needed was an explanation and an apology. Such a shame, feel they have extended their premises beyond their capabilities.

The spring breakfast is great, we came here for breakfast the last time we stayed in York. So good we came back... The latte a Is also great... Recommended to all.

Coffee was good but felt there were too many tables too close together in the place & looked as if it all needed a thorough clean or re decorating. Wife had toast & I asked for marmalade - only do Jam, Honey or marmite!!!!!!! , you cant have morning toast without marmalade .

Top coffee is on offer here and there’s a pleasant feel about the place. The window seats are ideal for people peeping and nice to see a mix of readers, writers and friends talking arithmetic in the interior seats. Grab a loyalty card and pop in again. Enjoy!

We popped in the first time at the Lendal Spring Espresso unexpectedly for breakfast and were so impressed with the service and quality that we returned the following morning for breakfast again. The first morning we, 3 of us, had a Yorkshire tea served in a beautiful Japanese style tea pot, a black americano and a cappuccino. My mother had a bacon sandwich on sourdough and wow! It was packed with bacon and very tasty. What she couldn’t finish was kindly wrapped as a takeaway. My wife had a yoghurt, fresh berries and granola and I had porridge. It was all very tasty. The second day we had, scrambled egg on toast, 2 poached eggs, bacon and avocado and I had the English breakfast. Same drinks as before and same quality and standard as before, excellent. To top it all off the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Full marks in customer service. Would I return there …. absolutely.

A big fan of the coffee here so if that’s what you’re popping in for - you won’t be disappointed. If you’ve got a bigger appetite then there’s cafes within a 2 minute walk (mannions) that will provide a more substantial breakfast and value for money. Enjoy!

£6 for 2 hot chocolates. They were lukewarm in temperature. Unfortunately didn't even get an option to add marshmallows and cream - a necessity on a cold day! Good atmosphere and friendly staff.

Ordered poached eggs on toast and eggs benedict. On both of the dishes the eggs weren’t cooked properly (egg white was translucent around the yoke and the yokes were the consistency of water). We stopped the waitress who fetched the manager. Rather than apologise - he tried to pass it off as water from the cooking process. It was clearly raw egg white - it can easily happen when you’re running a busy cafe, but if a customer raises an issue with the food don’t add insult to injury! I personally expect more for 2 small plates with tea for £22.

The staff were uber-welcoming and friendly. As tables were vacated the whole space on and around it was immediately cleaned and sanitised ready for the next customers. The cakes were delicious, as was the coffee. All-in-all we had a great visit 👍

This place is a gem! Delicious food, fast & friendly service and bonus points for the QR code in window which allows you to order to go from your phone! All 3 of us loved our selections including avo toast, pancakes and a breakfast sandwich. Items packed in earth-friendly containers, perfect for picnic in a nearby park!

I was there several times in one week. Their cappuccinos are truly excellent and the service is always delivered with love. A wonderful place to enjoy a great cup of coffee with a friend.

Well!!!! One had ‘just toast’ but it was the best toast she’s ever has!!! The daughter had pancakes and banana and chocolate spread we were told it may be a while, wow she would wait all day next time they were that good!!! And the mother and I had the french toast with yoghurt and berry’s !!!!! I couldn’t convince my husband to drive back the next weekend from Birmingham just for breakfast although he promised to take me sooon thank god!Service amazing, clean and quirky Oh and take some almond fruit brioche home with you that to is is outstanding

We've tried most of the coffee shops in York, but keep coming back here because we can't find any better. You can tell they really know their stuff about making coffee, we've never been disappointed with a cup. Service is always friendly even when the coffee shop is full. The sandwiches are very tasty too as a bonus.

We enjoyed a lovely tea & cappuccino here. We also ordered the poached eggs & avocado on sourdough which was yummy - although the bacon was an expensive addition which was not well cooked. The server was very friendly and accommodating to us coming in with a pram.

Found Sring had good ratings on line and so decided to try it on a small break in York.The service and the coffee were impeccable- do good we made a detour to visit again the next day. I had a cappuccino the first day and a flat white the second. Also tried the muffins which were delicious. So much better than the offerings from the big high street brands.Nice touch was the complimentary water and the friendly welcome. it was good to see people taking such pride in their work.Will definitely visit again next time we are in York.

Spring Espresso has become a firm favourite of mine in recent months. It's a cool little café with a nice laid back vibe, friendly staff and - most importantly of all - excellent coffee. Their flat white is probably the best in town - it's beautifully made with a perfect texture and a bold taste. Too often a flat white in the UK is a bit like a small latte but here the coffee definitely does most of the talking which is how it should be. Their hot chocolate is pretty good too, as are their cakes. A definite 5 star experience. Highly recommended.

Had breakfast here on our last day in York after trying to decide where to eat. Glad we went had a very nice breakfast, the café is small but we were lucky it wasn’t too busy. I really enjoyed the ‘Avo Eggs’ , totally worth a visit

All I have to say about my trip is the chicken, bacon, pesto and mozzarella sandwich I had was possibly the best thing I have ever put in my face. Amazing. P.s. coffee was great, staff were lovely, good vibe. Literally pall good.

Always head to this place when visiting York. Coffee is great, cappuccinos are fabulous! Never have breakfast at our hotel as the food is amazing. Can never decide what to have as the selection on the menu is perfect and so different to the norm. Produce used is amazing and the presentation always brings a wow when it arrives at the table. The atmosphere is lovely such a cosy relaxed feel to the place. Can't wait to visit again!

I was eager to try here after reading the the fantastic reviews which i can say they truly deserve their fantastic reputation. We recently visited york over the Easter bank holiday. I always like to try independent stores as the big chains i feel have lost their standards. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, which made us feel at ease.They even offered complimentary glasses of water perfect for the hot weather. It was refreshing to have a barista know what he was doing i had a Americano with hot soya which was perfectly blended without the milk splitting and the coffee was just devine best I've tasted in a long time. My partner had a hot chocolate which was silky smooth and delicous he too thought it was just supurb. The deco is quirky it was beautiful to look onto the streets it almost had a French vibe to me. I really wished we had revisited to try the food menu.

We were happy to find this really easily and as we’d read about it before hand , popped in for a coffee . Just what you want from an independent coffee shop, good service, quirky interior, nice atmosphere and probably the best coffee we’ve had in a while ! We didn’t eat but wouldn’t hesitate in returning and sampling the array of lovely looking cake/sweet selection .We’ll definitely return. Great start to a day in York.

Regularly pop in here for a coffee/sweet treat & I’m never disappointed. The coffee is very good & I would especially recommend the caramel slice-yum! It’s always busy & you’re not guaranteed a table straight away but it’s worth the wait.

Just another modern coffee shop with that slightly bitter coffee we've all been told is the best. Staff seemed friendly enough and the environment is no different to every other artisan coffee shop these days. I'm sure somewhere there is a middle ground between overly milky weak coffee for £1 and slightly astringent £2.50-£3 a shot high brow but I'm yet to find the place.

I visited Spring espresso for the first time, having been recommended it by friends, and the experience was brilliant.The coffee was great, and I was served by a an Australian girl, who was very friendly, welcoming and interesting and went out of her way to make sure I had everything I need.The staffs attitude and friendliness brightened my day and I will visit again just because of the staff.

I love this place, great coffee and cakes, plus dog friendly. The staff are friendly and competent, making a visit comfortable and enjoyable. I visit regularly and frankly don’t feel the need to go anywhere else in York for a coffee.

Came here for breakfast on recommendation from a service staff in another restaurant. Great decision. Had a cappuccino and eggs on toast. While the eggs were a tad pricey, it was smooth and definitely well cooked. Its also centrally located a short distance from Betty's, so no chance you get lost.The cafe has two outlets, and the second is at Fossgate further south in case this outlet was too crowded.

My Australian partner and I have been attempting to scope out some of York’s best coffee on our brief visit as it is my home town; I believe we found it in Spring espresso. The blend is the smoothest I have tasted in York and the overall atmosphere of the place is cosy and welcoming. Unfortunately the only issue we have found is in one of its staff members, I believe she works in both Fossgate and this one and is also Australian. In contrast with the rest of the staff, she was cold and rude! We visited the Fossgate spring espresso a few days later and she served my partner at the counter. She had an unwelcoming tone, condescending attitude and an uninterested behaviour visibly noticeable to us and others. After receiving such an inviting experience from some other members of staff it was very noticeable to see the complete opposite and disappointing in an otherwise positive experience.

What a surprise to visit this small cafe just as we arrived in York! Great coffee, great service, delicious Portuguese cream treat! And the daughter loved the hot chocolate! On our list next time we visit York!

Having visited Spring Expresso in Fossgate this morning, we were unable to pass by its sister shop in Lendal this afternoon!I am delighted to report that it is just as good. Lovely coffee, complimentary carafe of water, what more could you want?Spring Expresso in York deserves to succeed. Great customer service, friendly staff and coffee and food of the highest quality.Both shops get busy but it really is worth hovering and grabbing a table as soon as one becomes available!

Just enjoying a flat white oat milk coffee which is one of the bested I have tasted in york or the world for that matter And with a Portuguese custard tart - it was perfect

Ordering a flat white can be a dispiriting experience these days, but not here. Made properly in the right sized cup with the correct milk and the right temperature. Friendly staff who clearly know what they are doing. Top marks :-)

Stumbled across this cafe and what a find! Best coffee in York, breakfasts were amazing - so good we went twice over our long weekend trip - porridge incredible and poached eggs were also delicious! We will be back!!

I am a complete Australian coffee snob and the coffee here was amazing. Came back twice for my soy latte. They take a real pride in their coffee and there is a cool hipster vibe to the place. I didn’t order food but it looked amazing. Pancakes particularly. And they have lovely homemade cakes and baked treats. Highly recommend!!!

Friendly staff, amazing coffee and incredible cakes and food. Nice calm atmosphere. Would highly recommend! Knowledge of their coffee beans was fantastic and my coffee mad husband was in heaven.

Lunchtime meal and coffee with my mum a senior lady, took a while to get her seated having to move tables. But once seated fine, savory choice wide a varied from traditional to modern. Choice of bread, etc. to suit various diets. Had an issue with a senior staff member with a local accent, but sorted in the end. Later my daughter arrived with her fiancee who also had meals and coffee's. We liked this place despite being a little cosy.

My husband and I both had iced coffees and Bakewell cake. The coffees were excellent and the cake delicious! Reasonably priced. Would visit again.

It was a breath of fresh air to find this cafe dedicated to the art of coffee on our recent visit to York; a truly rare find in the UK. We were so impressed that we had our morning coffee here each morning during our week in York. The toasted bacon and relish sandwich was also a great treat.

Coffee is always great. Poached eggs are always cooked perfectly. Extra little details (olive oil, salad sprouts etc) make it worth coming back again and again.

We stumbled across this place after trying to decide which one of the local well known eateries we were going to choose. What a find! We received a warm welcome from the young waiters/waitresses who were happy to advise on our choice of food. Many thanks to the girl who gave assurances to our younger relative who has a nut allergy. So I popped in here for my pre work cuppa and decided to try the bacon sarnie - I don't like fat or rind so asked for none and it was suggested I try the streaky bacon as once it's cooked fat renders away ... I was dubious but when it arrived it was absolutely delicious, tasty and crispy with a lovely relish and toasted bread. The staff were so nice. I had poured my tea to early so it was a milk mess and they brewed me fresh cup no charge which I thought was really good of them. Overall an excellent cafe with cakes to die for too. Can't wait to come again. Thank you.

We have Visited a few times for coffee, No complaints. This visit we decided to eat, we ordered waffles with bacon mixed fruits maple syrup and fruit yogurt. Very disappointed, the waffles were dry, the bacon hard crispy and crumbly. Overall just not nice. I think we will just stick to coffees in the future.The labelling of food specials are not exhaustive I.e mixed fruit!??. If people have a food allergy strawberry, kiwi etc I think this needs to be more more transparent

Coffee Ok but not the best. Staff were generally friendly and a reasonable atmosphere. But, the table top wasn't very clean, needed a good wipe down. In sum, there are better places around.

Delicious coffee and a good atmosphere in this small coffee shop, centrally located just a few minutes walk from the Minster. Nice cakes and biscuits too.
