After visiting Pontefract liquorice fair we looked for somewhere for lunch. After reading the reviews on google and Tripadvisor we decided on The Spread. We hadn’t booked but we were given a table and the service was fantastic. We were given a menu for Sunday Lunch. We ordered the roast beef, the lamb and my brother and sister in law are vegetarian so ordered Butter Bean Wellingtons. The dishes came with enormous Yorkshire Puddings, roast and mashed potatoes and parsnips on the plates. Two dishes containing carrots and cauliflower cheese were also put on the table to share along with red cabbage. We were asked if we wanted extra gravy which came in a gravy boat and a pot of mint sauce. The meals were lovely and we struggled to eat it all. The four meals (excluding drinks) were approx £64, amazing for the amount of good food. We all really enjoyed the meals and wished we lived closer A big thank you to all the staff who where friendly and extremely polite

First time for Sunday lunch at The Spread in a very long time. Service was excellent - especially Wendy. Quickly seated and given menus. Service at the bar was quick, despite it being busy. Excellent selection of beers and lagers. Food was superb and great value. Portions looked small when brought out, but there was sufficient with the sides. Deserts were great and cheese selection was good. I would definitely recommend the food and the service here.

Went in with a few mates had a few pints and don’t know what happened cause I had one too many. Two days later went in again and the landlord asked for a word. We went to a quiet area where he asked me to drink my drink and leave. I asked him why and he told me that I was racist and that the bar staff didn’t know how to handle the situation. He never once explained or who complained about my racist behaviour, I pointed out that my wife is Asian my son is a half caste and that racism is something I can’t condone. So without explaining his reasons other than my racism he asked me to leave the bar I refused until he refunded my drink and after a few unpleasant remarks exchanged I left. My advise to anyone who has an opinion other than the local obviously biased racist opinion is to avoid this establishment unless you want to be accused of being racist purely because your British. My son said dad I get it everyday from those people but they aren’t racist 🤣🤣🤣

Warm welcome for our Friday evening meal. Interior really imaginatively and knowledgeably transformed by current manager and team. Serving staff very smiley, friendly, efficient and professional. Particularly pleased with the immediate, attentive response when asked about the ingredients in the Miso glazed salmon steak. The Brisket, stroganoff, Cajun salmon and Miso salmon were all excellent. Perfectly cooked and presented with no more than an acceptable wait. Crème Brûlée and sticky toffee puddings maintained a very high standard. Our party of 4 thoroughly enjoyed our meal at at The Spread, Darrington. Busy, full dining room but managed so very well by the staff. We’ve had several meals here over the last few years and have never been disappointed. Consistent high standards are very hard to achieve. Full Marks to The Spread.

It’s a great pub, buzzing with enthusiastic, and kind staff, and happy locals and visitors. Good selection of wines, lager and ales. Varied food choices, made by a capable chef and served with care. We had car trouble and stumbled upon it purely by circumstance and ended up spending a good few hours here with the kids. They had a charging point for phones that was so helpful. A cosy sit in and spacious sit out with a car park. Relaxed atmosphere. Clean facilities. Thank you so much to everyone for looking after us!

Went for a family meal and had some gorgeous food. Me and my partner had the special, 16oz chateaubriand for two people. The beef was perfectly cooked and tasted amazing with the wild mushroom and port sauce. Was reasonable priced and filled us both up. Others had a rump steak, which looked good and tasted good as well. We all has the chef homemade cheese cake, salted caramel and it was delicious, would highly recommend. Been to the Spread a few times now and every time it’s fantastic. Service is great and price is good as well.

Thought we would try it as had a long journey left for Sunday lunch and sadly very very average. Pork was cooked ok but no crackling whatsoever and it’s why I ordered it. Also non on any others so not a one of. Cauliflower cheese was lacking any cheese and carrots must have sat for an age and service a little odd especially waiting for cutlery after food ordered. Think it’s trying to be something it might not be but seen some great reviews so maybe I caught a bad day.

We were unsure of the numbers but he said not to worry he would make sure we were catered for however many people turned up! He was as good as his word and put on some great food for everyone at a very reasonable price. We were made welcome all afternoon and into the evening and it was a genuinely great experience. We stopped off here for a pub lunch as we wanted to go somewhere different from the run of the mill carveries and fancied a Sunday lunch with some vegetables. This place looked appealing and we thought it would be a nice place to go. Our experience was really bad and we won't be returning. The food was basically raw, from the meat - served completely blue - it looked as though the chef had just taken a piece of raw meat and slapped it on the plate. In a Yorkshire pub, you just would not expect this to even be an issue. The roast potatoes were severely undercooked and chewy, the veg was not even vaguely cooked it might have had a minute in a microwave but was all raw. The cauliflower cheese was quite literally raw cauliflower with some cheese sauce tipped on it to warm it.The Yorkshire pudding was nice and well cooked and the chicken seemed to be cooked through, however the rest of the meal just spoilt the experience for us.We didn't receive any kind of check back until one of the very young members of staff - they all were - came to clear the table. When I told her how the meal had been, she didn't even apologise, just said she'd go to speak to the chef. I asked for the bill and was bought the full bill - again with no apology. Other tables were receiving check backs and friendliness from the staff however we had not, right from the start. We paid the bill - by card - and insisted on speaking to the manager. He refunded the full meal and said he'd speak to the chef, however there was no further offer of anything to remedy what had occurred or get us to consider visiting another time. The attitude of the staff also spoiled the experience for us - I suspect this was down to youth and lack of experience of how to handle customers. In addition to the food fiasco, my partner ordered a shandy and it was quite obvious the (again) young staff member had no idea how to assemble one. The drink was completely flat and looked like a pint of urine! There was also a young child wandering around the pub in the food area who was quite inappropriately dressed for a guest food service area. She was then leaning against the bar - I thought that children were not supposed to be at bars in alcohol service venues? We were really saddened by our experience as we've not lived in the area that long and are trying to experience new places near to where we live. This experience has not left us keen to return.

Andrew and his team have done amazing things to what was the Spread Eagle in Darrington but now renamed The Spread- and what a spread they now lay on too! Some amazing, inspired, locally sourced dishes and a fantastic range od wines, spirits & flavoured gins and about five draught lagers but.........and this is where they lost two stars......no craft ales, just a bland choice of Bradfield Brewery’s standard session type, uncomplex ales and a dated Black Sheep Masham offering .Where are those more local wonderful brews from Revolutions in Castleford or amazing Bakewell’s Thornbridge range or even Timothy Taylors in Keighley to name only a few. Even bottled offerings would provide a better and more tempting choice for the real, real ale sophisticates palate.

The Spread had been going downhill for a long time which was frustrating given the potential. What a fantastic change since new and very hard working people have taken over - with friendly and smiling staff. Still a way to go before it is the complete article décor wise but what has been completed thus far has been a massive improvement. Looks great from the outside and enhances the village. The beer offering is excellent and the pizza menu on Friday/Saturday/Sunday offers some very tasty pizzas from a wood fired oven. Roll on the kitchen opening for a full food offering. Great to see so many villagers flocking back and with positive reactions. Keep up the good work you deserve to succeed.

I took my wife out for a meal today and had one of the best meals I have ever had. I had prawn cocktail for starters, then had 8oz fillet salmon steak with shrimps and chips and my wife had fish chips and mushy peas. My starter had more prawns than expected and my salmon was that well cooked that when I touched it with my knife it broke up lovely. It was so tasty and sorted of melted in my mouth. My wife loved her fish and chips and was surprised at the size of the fish she got that she didn't think she could finish it. The staff were so friendly and warm to us as if we had been going there for years. The landlady was the chef so complemented her on such lovely food and guaranteed her that we would be returning again so we could try other food on the menu, because if it is as good as what we had then we would be returning regulars.

The landlord was initially a little taciturn, but he responded when we joked with him and he was very attentive when taking our order and bringing the food. We thought it was good value for money.

Cold and quiet. Could do with music and warmth. Very nice food. Chips hand made and excellent. Large portions and tasty. Could be lovely.

Nice looking pub on the outside. Dates decor inside which didn't bother us as we walked there and we were looking for a comfortable meal with our friends and kids. Ordered mushroom stroganoff and was served raw onions in a watery sauce. It tasted bitter and not the best. Weren't impressed. Won't be returning!

Other reviewers on this site convinced me to give this place a try. First visit - food was excellent. Made the mistake of having a starter which filled us up so had to leave some of the excellent steak and ale pie. Veg was nicely cooked.Second visit (2 days later) - no starter but the main course (macaroni cheese with meatballs) looked like the dish had been put in the oven a week ago. Baked on sauce up the side of the dish and not much macaroni cheese - or meatballs. Pudding was syrup sponge - I guess reheated in a microwave because the custard was superheated. To summarise - if we had the food on the first visit they gave us on the second visit there would not have been a second visit.

This place is something of a mixed bag. The beer is good with a large selection. I haven't ever eaten here but have heard some good things locally. The people are friendly enough and in many ways it ticks the boxes as a local pub..........however! I have to say that the whole place needs some tlc and investment. The decor is past tired and well on the way to shabby. I wish that someone would come and put some decent investment into the pub - it nees it

First time we've eaten here for MANY years.Had heard very mixed reports over the years but the four of us had a VERY pleasant lunch so we're very pleased we made the effort to visit.Admittedly, we were the only diners in the festively decorated, warm room and well-presented tables by the side of the main bar but we were very warmly welcomed by the lady behind the bar and we didn't miss the buzz of conversation or ambiance created by other diners too much.Drinks were speedily served but we weren't rushed to make our selections from the modest but varied menu on the board.Three orders for Roast Turkey and one for the steak and ale pie.A not unreasonable about 40 mins later we were served with piping hot, very plentiful meals.More than sufficient individual servings of well-presented and certainly not over-cooked veg plus mashed and roast potatoes and two very large steaming gravy boats for the Turkey addicts and a very large, very hot serving of steak and ale topped with a high dome puff pastry 'lid' along with veg and large serving of excellent chips + veg.We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals - unable to finish all the accompaniments! With drinks and food totalling about £15 pp - we judged this to be very good value for the meal and service.Things that could have been better? Well, although we didn't mind being the only diners, it did feel a little strange not to be amongst other diners. More importantly - and the reason why we couldn't go for 5 stars - the loos do need a lot of attention! Urgently for the Gents, It has to be said! For any bar or restaurant, Quality Loos are a priority.Overall, though, very pleased we decided to eat at The Spread Eagle, Darrington, so that we could make our own minds up.Having made this visit, we'll certainly be happy to consider visiting again. Thanks

Visited yesterday, very pushy staff. I like time to spend looking but seemed to be pushing too much to buy so went without buying anything. I wont visit again.

Passed by here many times before but as the main part seemed a little run down we hadn't given it a second thought. This time however, We were in need of a break as our journey had been fraught with heavy traffic so we pulled in and were so glad that we did. A very pleasant refreshment stop, with helpful, friendly and smiling staff meant that we stayed a little longer than intended. We shall definitely call in again when travelling this route.

Wrong drinks served (and cold) then wrong food served, oh and we felt we're over charged! Won't go back.
