We were wandering around Malton looking for somewhere to enjoy a spot of lunch and stumbled across the Spotted Cow, which is right next to the old cattle market pens. We decided to give it a try and we’re so pleased we did. It’s an amazing 16th century building with oak beams and looks very original and unspoilt. We ordered the “Fish and Chips” which were excellent. Crispy batter on the fish and chips cooked thoroughly unlike some places who tend to under cook them, with a side of mushy peas. The prices are very reasonable and it’s good value for money. The owners are new and have only been at the helm for 3 weeks. If they regularly serve up lovely food like this, they’ll do well and we hope it works out for them. On our positive experience today, we’d highly recommended trying the Spotted Cow and don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

This is a lovely, friendly little pub by the cattle market. We went for lunch but were informed that they don't do food ...

A lovely traditional pub with little snug areas. They do an all day burger menu and they are utterly delicious!! Great beer - real ale kept properly. Lovely staff. A friendly and traditional local. Perfect.

Not been in for a while, very quirky old pub in the heart of malton. Went for a few cheeky ones. Ended up having a COW burger, was a bit hungry so got pulled pork loaded fries on top. Best I've tasted in a long time. Deffo 5 stars. Credit to the chef. I would definitely recommend.

Great pub, lovely beer and attentive and splendid landlord. He played New Model Army on the jukebox on the strength of my sweatshirt alone and we had a lovely chat about music. Excellent.

Really lovely old pub with lots of little snug areas. We went on Friday and Saturday evening. Friday we went before dinner and there were people there but it wasn't too busy. Saturday we went back about 10pm and it was busy and there were people singing along really loudly to music. We sat in a snug (really lovely one at the front right that's like a iving room) and shut the door (we had oldies with us) and that was absolutely fine. Got the benefits of the atmosphere without having to listen to the awful singing haha. The barman was lovely every time we went in there.

A long time since I was last here , I wanted to show my friends an old Drinking hole . We felt ignored to be honest , sat near the bar in the little room but still felt Out of it . The main bar was full of regulars which had the attention of the landlord. Went To say thanks on leaving abs the staff looked away . Lovely old building. . Noisy and a lot of strong swearing from the main bar which doesn’t offend me but may some

We visited with friends and family after a meal in Malton and it wasn't busy ... they turned the heater on for us in the lower room and there were folks having a great time singing along to a sound system in the main bar. It's a quaint rather 'higgledy' building and has lots of atmosphere, with clean toilets and a reasonable variety of drinks on offer. We didn't sample the food and it doesn't have it's own parking from what I can see - you park in the local streets which could be tight depending on the time of day.

The make over of the Spotted Cow has not improved it. It has lost some of its old charm. It is still a good pub but please, no piped music, especially 1950's crooners.

Looks like the owner is posting his own reviews again, when I ate here it was anything but great! No chef, the barmaid cooks your dinner, may as well have stayed at home. We so many excellent places in Malton to choose from, the up & coming food capital! Don't opt for undercooked meat & overlooked veg, yuk!

Recently visited The Spotted Cow, what a fantastic pub. I had not been in for some time but had that it was under new ownership so thought I would re-visit. The pub has been lovingly restored and has been hugely improved since I last visited. It is immaculately clean and the staff are polite and professional. I noticed that they are now serving Sunday lunch so look forward to trying that soon.

Pubs like the Spotted Cow captivate the wary and unwary alike. I walked in for one pint and spent three hours there. Honestly, I don't think I need to say anymore than that.

Stopped in for a beer, and I really liked this pub. It's a proper old English pub. They have some good real ales on tap. The service is good, the staff are friendly and polite. It's next to a cattle market so it can be a little a little obvious at times but otherwise a brilliant pub.

A proper traditional local pub in Malton's marketplace. Great atmosphere, perfect ales, and decent local pies as well. There's a reason we always converge on this location: having tried all of the other options in town, no other pub is quite as good... Try sitting in the tap room on a cold winter's day for the ultimate Spotted Cow experience.

Staying nearby we decided to visit malton to visit the 2 pubs in my heritage pub book. Situated at the heart of the village next to the livestock pens this pub is a real find. Lots of character and period features. Low ceilings and a roaring fore in the left hand room. Well kept ales and friendly land lady....really enjoyed afew hours here. There was even a mobile butchers outsode when we went. How great is that. Don't miss it. Pair it with a drink in the blue ball...a nice afternoon

Called in twice last Saturday night (couldn't get anywhere near the bar 1st time so we came back later having been recommended the place !), and had a couple of pints of excellent Wadworths 6X & Tetleys. Staff and locals made us feel welcome and it was a lively, friendly atmosphere. Pubs serving "properly looked after real ale" are becoming difficult to find these days but this is definitely 1 of the dying breed !. Will definitely call again when we are in the area.

I used to frequent the Spotted Cow in the early seventies when I lived in Malton. It was great then and is still. Whenever I am back in Malton I usually pop in for a pint or three of Tetleys which is always excellent - pulled the old fashioned way resulting in a beautiful creamy head that lasts the whole pint, a rare occurrence these days. The landlord is a friendly guy always ready for a chat and although I only go in once or twice a year he recognises me and has a friendly greeting. I love the snug which hasn't really changed in the forty odd years I've been going in and long may it stay that way. Too many pubs refurbish the life and all the character out of a place and I hope that never happens here.

We've been coming to this fabulous pub for years and it's always warm and welcoming. Brian and Sarah are great hosts and Brian's bacon sandwiches on market days ( Friday and Tuesday) are a legend. The beers are always good and the wines is always chilled and delicious. Thoroughly recommend this pub to locals and visitors alike.

Sorry to do this but we visited a couple of weeks ago and the main bar was full of rowdy Rugby club members so a no go area and we made do with the 'snug' bar which was dirty and has a peculiar smell!! I had a glass of wine which I could'nt drink and the beer wasn't much better. Disapointed.

No food menu but a great pint. This is the last traditional pub in town and long may it remain that way. Staff are friendly and the beer is kept well, give it a visit and you won't be disappointed. Sit in the front part on the left as the back part is a bit untidy and full off the old locals who are glued to the bar. Great in winter with the coal fire

Visiting Malton, my wife's home town, for the weekend we popped into the Spotted Cow (where at least three generations of Christine's family have imbibed over the decades) for a couple of drinks having not visited there for some years - it hadn't changed a bit (in a good way!) and was as friendly and welcoming as ever, I don't drink at the moment so I was denied the pleasure but Christine told me that the Tetleys Bitter was as good as ever. We'll be back when I'm back on the ale!

Belting little multi-roomed market town English pub. Interesting old photo's and memorabilia festoon the walls including old Rose's Brewery paraphernalia. Good selection of three hand pulled beers, well kept and tasting notes on a blackboard in the front bar to assist the uninitiated. The Pedigree New World was certainly on top form and no doubt the Hobgoblin and Tetley were in a similar condition. A small pub with big character and a feeling of days gone by without being dated. Friendly and chatty barmaid. Nice one.

My second favourite pub in Malton, after the nearby Blue Ball, see also Tripadvisor. Tucked away up by the cattle market, on the edge of town, it would be easy to miss, especially if visiting in the evening, which would be a shame. The building is 300 years plus, stone flagged, low beams with a reasonable selection of ales, as you would expect from a Cask Marque pub. Traditional & welcoming.

Visited with family. There’s a really nice feel to the place. We arrived early for dinner and spent some time in the bar (with wood burner) then ate went in the dining room which has a lovely view of the valley. We chose snacks and starters, as the menu looked so good. Snacks were gougeres (perfect), an aranicino with nduja mayo (freshly made) and Yorkshire Rarebit, this being enormous. We had two starters - monkfish “scampi” and a magnificent and imaginative venison faggot dish. Our mains were: chicken burger and fries for our daughter; Toulouse sausages with puy lentils and celeriac remoulade; and partridge with cabbage etc. The sausages were spiced with nutmeg etc and tasted light not heavy. For the first time in a very, very long time we were defeated by the portion sizes and couldn’t manage a pudding. I’ve seen a review suggesting the portions were on the small side - all I can say is that this absolutely definitely wasn’t the case with us. We loved the food; clearly a chef thinking seasonal and local. Excellent all round and I had to look twice when I got the bill - £113 for 3 or about £37 per head. Unbelievable value for money, particularly for food of this quality.

Ordered the Brie & Bacon and cranberry Sandwich, it was missing the Cranberry so may have been the most tasteless thing I’ve ever ate. Ordered a pudding, the crumble, came with about a shot size of custard. This is the same for the Inn Collection Kings head, thinking it’s a recurring theme to avoid these pubs ! ☹️

Christ what a dump. Dingy. Nice if you’re into sky sports. Thought we would try an alternative to the George and dragon and tempted by the beer garden (very nice and with great potential in summer) so tried a pint of bitter. Now I see why everyone was drinking lager. In Yorkshire ffs! One swallow to see how nice it was. Another to see it was really as bad as the first. No 3rd swig. Vinegar. Clueless cellar management. Taste what you’re serving. Wouldn’t put it on chips. The rest went down a convenient geranium pot. Hope it survives. Vile. Not into confrontation so just left and went to the George and dragon for a delicious pint or 2 of theakston’s best. Avoiding the black swan where someone with TB was coughing his guts up in the smoking area. Avoid both would be my shout.

Just spent three nights at this beautiful Inn, staying in one of the garden rooms. The accommodation was spacious, comfortable and fully equipped. There was a good choice of breakfast options, with locally-sourced food being cooked to order. The atmosphere in the bar in the evening was lovely, with a log fire and fabulous food. Levisham is a quiet village (one road in) that is located in beautiful countryside - the perfect location to 'get away from it all'. We will certainly be re-booking at the Horseshoe Inn.
