Lovely cafe tucked away 1 minute from the hustle and bustle of the High Street. Friendly, welcoming staff, allow well-behaved dogs (especially handy when raining!), delicious food, we had a yummy lunch. Great place to visit for brunch, lunch, afternoon cuppa and cake. Near to the Bishop’s Palace, a great park and the Cathedral.

A pleasant little café tucked away down a small side street, first impressions were that it all looked a bit basic, more of a builder’s café than a trendy coffee shop. That may be slightly unfair though, it does to an extent depend upon which door you approach it from. Had we come in via the patio, there is an interesting wooden façade to the mezzanine level floor, almost like an alpine ski lodge. The waitress seemed very cheery and called out hello as soon as we entered. We were only there for a coffee and a cake, although the menu listed a number of more substantial dishes such as omelettes, burgers, sandwiches and so on. The cakes were displayed in a glass cabinet on the counter and all looked quite tempting, although with only three of four to choose from there was certainly a smaller selection than many places. What looked to be a Victoria Sponge was described as a lemon drizzle cake (normally these are oblong rather than round, and I’ve never seen one with a layer of butter cream in the middle before) and another looked very tempting with some sort of syrup just oozing out of it, but the vegan harvest cake description sounded somewhat less inspiring. In the end, the lemon drizzle cake was very good indeed, beautifully moist and the cream layer added an extra hot of sweetness. A coffee and walnut cake was also very good indeed, again quite on the sweet side perhaps, but that’s no bad thing. Sizes were both a little on the small side though. A latte was ok, although nothing special, I’ve certainly had much tastier ones. I’m not a fan of strong coffee, but this one just seemed to be lacking much in the way of any taste at all. Across the table a pot of green tea was again nothing outstanding, with the pot being just enough for one cup rather than the usual two. Prices were very reasonable though with the two cakes and two hot drinks coming in at around £8.50, whereas in most places it would be at least a tenner, so that does excuse the slightly smaller portion sizes. Overall, whilst this might not look the most enticing option around, the decent cakes, good value and friendly service means that I would be happy to return next time I’m in Wells.

After a disappointing morning trying to find a dog friendly cafe we chanced upon the Spinning Wheel. So pleased we did. Very warm welcome from the hosts was followed by a ‘small’ breakfast which filled the plate. Beautifully prepared and presented with good quality sausages and bacon and a very tasty hash brown washed down with one of the best prepared Lattes we have had in a long while. Worth seeking out, we’ll definitely be back.

Cheap bread being used for sandwiches, when will these small cafe outlets realise that when customers purchase sandwiches if they spent just a few pence more on some quality bread then they may return, the filling of bacon and egg was o/k but you need to spend a little bit more money on your bread and transfer this minimal cost onto the customer, I'm sure they wouldn't mind if it changed your unappetizing sandwich into a nice pleasant one which would get your customers returning for more, I wouldn't return but for people who don't mind consuming tasteless bread then this is the place to visit as the prices for central Wells ain't that bad,

This small cafe lies off the main street down a side street. Its a welcome break for a cuppa if the busy street cafes are not for you.It has seating inside and out and has baby chairs .Toilets are up stairs and not easy for those disabled .space inside is limited but good for that quick snack and cuppa although with the tea for 2 a pot of hot water with it would be good .good prices for their menu .parking in wells is pay and display, limited and some free spaces if you know where.Toilets are off the square from the main street.Plenty of shops and there is a market on a wednesday.walk around the bishops palace moat or visit the park .

Looked inviting as the sun was out and we could sit outside. Really dull menu, so decided to have a cream team. The scone wasn’t homemade but the jam and cream was ok. We had tea and the milk was gone off, I could smell it before I saw it! Generally lacking any atmosphere. One waitress was fairly happy but the other was finding it hard to raise a smile. Not worth return visit.

Last Saturday we went to this cafe for breakfast, there was nobody in there and the young girl was polite and cheerful, we ordered a coffe, a tea, one breakfast and one mushrooms on toast. No problem. A couple came in and ordered a tea and teacake each then a lady with a young child entered and ordered a breakfast. The other waitress came into the cafe and having put newspapers in the rack then proceeded to spend her time chatting to the couple at the next table. The couple got their order, we accepted that teacakes wouldn't take as long as a breakfast but wnen the other breakfast had been nearly consumed by the other person and we were still waiting for ours over 20 minutes later we asked how long it would be, she grudginly went towards the kitchen and then told us it was nearly ready. Her attitude was such that we said we no longer required our meals and we paid for our drinks and left. After this we went into the Market Place Cafe where we had much better service, the food was extremely good and despite being busy we only had to wait for 10 minutes before being served with a smile and asked if we required anything else. Would suggest going here instead even tho ugh it is a bit dearer.

I hate leaving a bad review but sadly this cafe deserves one. We went for breakfast and I mentioned to the waitress what I would need gluten free. She offered no help or suggestions, begrudgingly checked if the sausage haf gluten (it did) with no advice on what else could be offered. I knew my husband was really hungry and looking forward to a cooked breakfast so I ordered a jacket spud with bacon and cheese. It took ages to arrive with two mediochre coffees. The potato was small and microwaved but it was the waitress' attitude that annoyed me the most. I get so cross when I'm made to feel uncomfortable because of a condition I can't help.

The good news - the tea was hot and the cream was good. The bad news - the scone was a shocker: looked and tasted like it was straight out of a wholesale catering pack, and was stale to compound the misery. Wouldn't go back there.

Saw sign on main street so went down to this cafe and decided to give it a go. Cafe a bit basic inside but looked clean, ordered soup and brown bread and a jacket potato with cheese plus drinks.we were the only people in there which concerned us a bit but it was 2.30pm. Service was quick, the mature waitress came back for our order before we were ready really and then after taking the order through to the kitchen stood behind the counter staring at us as if summing us up. When the food came were a little disappointed by the pre-grated cheese with the jacket potato, small amount of coleslaw and the sliced bread with the soup, but in fairness it was all quite tasty and reasonably priced. By now four other customers had arrived, some sat outside on the small patio area. On paying we noticed a poster on the wall,"If you haven't got a good word for any person you are in the right place." Not the best advert for a business.

On my visit to wells thought I would have a coffee and snack in an independent cafe instead of usual chains which were all very busy as it was near lunch time. So I went to the spinning wheel but wished I had not bothered. There were four customers eating so very quiet, after looking at menu I asked for a coffee and a tea cake. I was told they didn't serve tea cakes at lunch time even though they were still serving breakfast with toast and sold cake, but for some bizarre reason could not serve what I asked for. I was about to leave and she changed her mind and said as a one off I could have one. All the time I was there I felt awkward and could not get out of there fast enough. By the time I had left there was only one person in cafe. I am not surprised given the type of service. Will not be visiting this cafe again.

Wells has a great market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, so I drove there today as had a day off work. The City, as usual for Market Day was bustling. Waling back to the car, the heavens opened and I fancied a coffee, but not in a coffee shop chain, I was looking for somewhere unique, less busy, and off the main road. By chance, I stumbled upon The Spinning Wheel Café, I looked down a quaint side lane I was passing and it had a clear, large sign outside. I received a very warm welcome. The coffee and the toasted tea cake were just what I needed. I look forward to taking my husband there. I also liked the fact that the young man asked me to choose a table and advised me that he would be over to take my order when I was ready. My only negative comment, is that it was cold in there.
