You need to order minimum of £17.50per person even if you go in a group/family. Not recommended at all.food was tasteless.staff is very unfriendly and makes you uncomfortable. There was one (Bengali) waiter who was extremely rude and arrogant and wanted us to tip.

Not a good curry house based on our experience. There was no depth of flavour to the dishes. Staff seemed really miserable as well like they were doing you a favour by letting you eat in their restaurant.

place was quite empty and a bit sterile. Food was good but not typical indian - the tikka massala and butter chicken both had far too much cardamom. The sheek kebab was dry. Service was strange, one waiter who didn’t seem to care much and one ( the owner?) overly obsequious. The kids liked it but i found it fairly basic for the price.

I generally don’t like to review worst places but sometimes it is a good idea to warn others. Me, my wife, daughter and my parents ( age 70 + ) went to sky garden but there was quite a rush there so shifted to this hotel as it was practically in front of sky garden and my father would have loved Indian food. Welcome was okay but upon starting to order, all of a sudden , the waiter halted me and informed - quite rudely - to check note in menu where certain amount of bill was mandatory. We all were surprised to see this attitude as I haven’t even completed ordering. They may have their own rules about minimum bill requirement and it might be prudent to inform customer as well but to abruptly stop customer while ordering and informing rudely was a no go for us. If it would have been only me and my wife, we would have left such place but for sake of parents, we decided to order and eat as they were hungry. While lunch was ongoing, I needed to check nearby place and inquired the waiter if WiFi was available and if it was free of cost or carry some charge as there was no sign of free WiFi or open password. He said immediately to me that the charge for WiFi was 1 pound per minute. I was astonished and then he said, he was making fun and we would get WiFi. That was no fun but an insult. His body language and manners while stating rate were far away from rhetoric of friendly banter that we enjoyed a lot in rest of London. He showed me a handwritten password. Number 7 and 1 were confusing due to handwriting. And when I asked about it, he suddenly started quarrel with irritation. That was too much but we all decided to eat and leave and not ruin day over it. On positive side, food was okay - not great but passable. Service although mediocre, food was served fast. Toilets were unclean. Don’t go there. And Indian friends, give this a pass. We were later told that this was owned by Asian neighbours of India and the scorn we received was probably a result of that enmity as well. Who knows the truth. But fact is this is a mediocre place full of arrogant staff. Don’t ruin your lovely London day.

Visited the Spice Trader the night before the second UK lockdown as our usual Indian restaurant was closed. We really enjoyed the food at Spice Trader, great portions and really tasty food. Would highly recommend the Prawn Pathia. The Garlic Naan breads are a highlight. Staff are lovely and very attentive. I look forward to visiting again, once lockdown is lifted.

The wife and I fancied a curry on our night in London and this is an excellent curry house. Nothing exotic, just good traditional food with a menu that wouldn’t look out of place in your local takeaway. The restaurant was very clean and the staff were attentive. The food was delicious and not overly priced. Will definitely return when we’re in the area again. Highly recommended.

No volvería.

We were visiting the Sky Garden on a freezing February evening and spotted the restaurant as we left. We were in the mood for a spicy treat and were welcomed into the restaurant despite being the first customers of the night. We were surprised to discover that the prices were similar to what we would pay back home in Shropshire despite being in the centre of London. Lovey food and great service!

Soooo, it looks from the reviews to date that we have a consensus! My meal tonight confirms what the majority or contributors have said - this is an excellent traditional British-style Indian restaurant (a cuisine that that I absolutely love) that's not too expensive for the location. I will definitely be back.

Also had pilau rice, naan to share (peshwari), saag paneer and bombay potatoes and other half had a chicken tikka dhansak with pilau rice (which he said had a spicy kick to it too!).Bill came to £57 for both of us this also included two beers and two vodka, soda and limes.Reasonable for the City and very tasty food. The food is nice enough which is important and the ingredients feel fresh and good quality. However the thing that makes it just average is the atmosphere. I have been here a few times and the lighting is far too bright and most, but not all the staff aren't particularly friendly in fact some are a bit surly. I would say there are better all round Indian restaurants in the city.

Spice Trader9-10 Philpot LaneLondonEC3M 8AATel - 02079292229www.spicetraderlondon.comCuisine - IndianI have visited Spice Trader for a number of years and it has never changed. A more traditional take on Indian food, which is nice to see sometimes as there are a number of Fusion Asian restaurants around now. With plain decor, the curry house hangs its focus on its friendly service and food.As usual we skipped the starters after sharing a few poppadoms with chutneys including onion and tomato, mango chutney, the very hot spices lime pickle and creamy raita dip.For the mains we ordered a two Chicken Kurai's and a Chicken Shashlik whilst sharing a Mushroom rice which was served like most rice dishes in indian cuisine and a mushroom bhaji which was excellent. The Shashlik was cooked well and the peppers and onions on the skewer offered lovely flavour and texture, whilst the Kurai dishes offered a spicy, wetter option on the table. The food here is good but there is nothing to get to excited about and lacks a certain zest in terms of menu choice. I return to this restaurant for its always friendly service and the fact that I have never had a bad meal.We shared a number of Cobra's and the restaurant also serves the very rare Mongoose beer which is very similar but earns its selling power to the fact that in India the Mongoose eat Cobra's.Before ordering the bill we had a very sweet Irish coffee. Free kumal and amaretto's were on offer. For three of us the bill came to around c£120 which is a good £40 over priced.Gastrogreglarr rating: 6.5/10Gastrogreglarr likes: having been visiting for around 8 years to not have had a bad meal in that time is good goingGastrogreglarr dislikes: not as competitively priced as other city curry housesFollow me on twitter @gastrogreglarr

This place is awesome. Standard menu, but that's what you want really. If you want “slow roasted guinea fowl with a curry jus over a compote of rice and…” this isn't the place for you. if you want healthy sized portions, cold beer, good efficient service, in a non fancy (underground) place, then this is for you. Get involved. The last review gave it 5/10 for the worst curry ever. Not a bad score for such a bad event. I love it and go there frequently. Loving the sag paneer and the pesh.

I had an incredible dining experience at Royal India in Covent Garden. From the moment I stepped in, I was greeted with warm hospitality and a beautifully authentic atmosphere that set the tone for a memorable meal. The staff was attentive and friendly, making excellent recommendations tailored to our tastes. The food was truly exceptional—each dish was rich, flavorful, and expertly spiced, capturing the true essence of Indian cuisine. The butter chicken was silky and packed with flavor, while the biryani was aromatic and perfectly balanced. Whether you’re a fan of Indian cuisine or just looking to try something new, Royal India is a must-visit. This is easily one of the best Indian restaurants I’ve been to in London, and I can’t wait to return!

Average given the price. Nothing particularly bad, but given the price the food quality was about average and nothing really stood out as wow, as you would hope for somewhere charging £50/head. On the face of it the decor looks ornate and impressive, but actually when you looked closer the wood panelling looked tired, and in places may have had black mould on the edges of the mouldings. The atmosphere was also somehow cold and lacking warmth and class — it is possible this was due to a poor choice of lighting, mostly overhead and cold in temperature, and not enough side lighting and of a warmer colour temperature. It was also actually cold! It is not clear why the air conditioning would be on and set to such a low temperature in October. It was too cold for my 74 year old mother, but eventually they did provide a small space heater, which greatly improved things. The staff were friendly and helpful — i.e. with the space heater —and the manager honoured the price I was quoted online, which disagreed with the price in the menu in the restaurant.
