Spice Rouge in Stevenage

Booked to go here mid week for a table on Saturday evening. Great food- good to try new things. Lamb shank with chickpeas was gorgeous, as well as okra and Indian sweet potato. Decor in the place was a little old fashioned and plain. Lots of staff which were attentive but could be friendlier- as soon as I had my last spoonful my plate was taken and table cleared! But great to go out- it then got busier come 730.

Great food and excellent service. The portions were good and the food was super tasty. Highly recommended for a group meal.

I don’t believe it! My wife and visited Spice Rouge this evening for Valentine’s Day. First off the food was amazing, such good quality and quantity. We both had a starter, then the Lamb Shank with Chip peas. The service was excellent, food came out at a nice pace not to fast and staff more than once asked if everything was ok and did we require anything else. I would like to thank the staff individually (which I don’t normally do) so big thank to Chef, Hossain, Ali, Hud and Murad. Great evening, highly recommended if you want quality food and service at a reasonable price. VM.

We were given a 45min time slot which we were fine with. Ordered food as soon as we could. Food was ok however service was horrendous. Plates were being taken away while people were eating, when questioned upon this there was no apology. My partner had 2 black thick hairs in his curry which was disgusting and put him off his food. I was eating the poppadoms which was taken away while I was still eating it. This meal was not worth the £100 we spent here. Next time I will stick to the Bombay where they would never treat us like this, I have never had an issue there! Avoid spice rouge!!!!

We visited this restaurant a while ago and the food was out of this world. We booked again for a family birthday, bearing in mind we live in the South West and this restaurant is in Stevenage. We just knew it would be worth the trip. They have the biggest Onion Bhaji's we have ever seen. The dishes were wonderful and the chap who served us made a great suggestion of Chicken and Garlic rice - so yummy! Balti was not on the menu, but they made it specially and again so yummy! The food was hot, the plates were hot, Cobra on tap - perfect. We had told our friends at home about the Bhaji's so we ordered a further 5 to take home to give out. All the staff were lovely and we had such an exceptional night. We will go back for sure!

We visited this restaurant on Friday. The staff was exceptional friendly.The food was of very good standard. And overall service was great . Would definitely be going back

First time going to this establishment, and have to say that this is the worst Indian restaurant I have ever been to, especially travelling all the way from Wembley to have a long awaited business dinner with my clients The Kheema was tasteless, and the Butter chicken looked very anaemic and was still pink in the middle, to the point I’m sure that it was still clucking Only decent item on the menu was the popadoms They definitely won’t be seeing me or my money again

This is a brilliant restaurant. The food and the service and ambience are all great. The naan bread is the best I've had. Fresh tasting, perfectly cooked. An enjoyable evening was had by all.

Very poor - food wasn’t the best by a long way, and very bland. Staff turned all lights on and gave us the bill at 2200hrs even before people had finished eating and drinking in other words please leave. Choose somewhere else to eat if I were you

Very rude staff greeted us, this should really have been enough for us to leave, however we decided to give it a go as a true foodie colleague had recommended this place. Wasn't busy really, about 5 tables of people including us and atleast 7 staff. Still waited about 15 minutes until anyone came over for drinks. The onion bhaji is huge, which made me think, this will be amazing.. It wasn't, no taste at all and had to be drowned in the watered down yogurt and mint sauce for some substance. Next was the main, this came out boiling hot which was literally the only good thing about it. The naan was the best part of the meal. We had chicken korma (tasteless) mushroom rice (OK) and a lamb vindaloo (bareable) The portions were tiny which was surprising after the football sized bhaji. Because the main was so bland we couldn't eat it, but thought we can't let it go to waste, will take home and jazz it up. Asked if we could take this away and ended up paying 1.50 for non reusable containers which we were not informed of. If you do end up going, bring your own salt and pepper and only order what you will eat or bring your own food boxes. Absolutely the worst restaurant we have been to in a long while, will not be returning.

We booked for 30 people as a corporate event with Spice Lounge. Leading up to the event we pre-ordered our food (to be served ‘family style’ to make it easier for us and the staff) but the communication was very poor. When we arrived we were very disappointed in the customer service. Before even saying ‘hello’ as we arrived we were told ‘no split bills’ to which we said yes that’s fine and that we could even pay the full amount for the food right away (£500) . We explained that we were unable to expense drinks on our corporate card so people would have to pay for these seperately. The two staff members looked angry, had a heated discussion in a different language with their backs turned to us and tried to tell us this was not possible. After I explained that there was no other option on our end and we would have to leave if not, they agreed. When we were seated the starters arrived at 6 and the mains at 7, exactly as we had planned. The food was rather bland and portion sizes were very very small. Whilst people ordered their drinks throughout the evening the staff were extremely rude, ignoring them and even finishing their own food and drinks before acknowledging us. I asked for some tap water for the table and the gentleman sighed and went back to his dinner without saying anything to me. I had to get another colleague to ask him again 10 minutes later. Overall I am extremely disappointed in the customer service, infact I think the rudest staff member was the owner. The only polite member of staff we saw was the younger boy. Will not be returning, which is a shame as we will have to find another venue to host our monthly curry night.

I found the food the most bland Indian I have ever had and had to season it when I got home.....I was very disappointed

I came in today with my partner after she finished work for a bite to eat we booked for 10pm, the website stated last bookings were taken at this time. After I placed the booking I was spammed with calls telling me we have to come early as they close at 10:30 when it says 11pm on website. When we arrived and was given the menus the waiter said we need to hurry up and order as we needed to leave soon, before he asked what we wanted. We then had to rush to decide what we wanted as we had 2 minutes to look at menu. he then rudely said “well can you hurry up as you need to be out by 10:30”. The food was nice though, with one polite waiter, who was a younger boy, which served us towards the end.

Visited on a Saturday night. The restaurant was fully booked - great atmosphere. The service was excellent and the food was brilliant - best Indian I’ve been to in a while. The classics were fantastic but so were the chef’s specials, as recommended by our waiter (we were recommended the Karahi kebab khyberi 👌). The onion bhaji is ridiculously big but delicious (apparently the chef is the Guinness World Record holder for the biggest onion bhaji - 175kg!). Highly recommended!

Not so long review I know but I can honestly say probably one of the best curries I have ever had and at a very reasonable price also definitely be going back there again. Great value for money

Ordered 3x chicken tikka masala and 1 chicken korma . all 4 tasted the same no tikka on the chicken all 4 sauces were orange in colour. the chicken korma was a red meat not sure what, Was delivered 35 minutes late and was cold....

Nice building and staff turned off aircon for us as it was making the are we were in very cold. Surprised they sat another set of diners right next to us when there were plenty of other tables free so that was a bit annoying....

Very small amount of food. Rice is over cooked, soggy and is not really proper pilau rice. Naan is covered with oil which is not really what it hould be. Tandoori chicken seems to be not fresh

Booked a table (get confirmation email) for me and my partner for 7pm today, I get a text message at 5.30pm to say my table has been cancelled and I can have one at 9.30pm! Not happy, now I can't get booked in anywhere. The guy I spoke to on the phone was not helpful at all and said you can eat at 9.30pm or not.

I booked a table for 6.30pm online. Then I received a phone call at 4.45pm to say that they were fully booked and the earliest they could do was 9.30pm😡

Fancied an indian and thought we'd try Spice Rouge out.Went for a girls night mid-week the place itself looks like a pub outside and looks pretty modern on the inside.Ordered a lamb biryani and a pashweri naan, had a mixed plater for starters. Food was really nice! the staff had a good sense of humour too.Good food, nice staff - would definatley go back again :)

We have been goin to this restaurant for about 8 yrs now and it seems to just get better everytime we go. The vinda loo is fantastic, a nice heat but so flavoursome. The price is pretty reasonable and truly worth every penny. Friendly staff. Hassle free. There is no better Indian in Hertfordshire by far. (we've been to alot)

Overall, a nice indian takeaway but our naan bread was burnt and so was the lamb on my tikka masala which made the lamb very dry and tasteless. However, my son's lamb dopiaza was very nice. To conclude, a nice takeaway but I've had better from here before. Maybe it was just very busy due to the "Eat Out Help Out" scheme.

I have eaten at many curry houses across the UK and am still yet to find somewhere that is as good as Spice Rouge in Stevenage.

One of our favourite places to eat. The food is delicious. The onion Bhaji is a meal in itself. Forgot to take a picture but it is the best I’ve ever had. MIT even have 2 on a lonesome night as a takeaway. Service is first class, drinks are fine. Not the cheapest Indian locally by far but certain in the upper echelons for quality.

Have dined here a few times. Every meal has been excellent. Cannot fault the food and service. Looking forward to the next visit.

Originally planned to visit another Indian restaurant only to find it closed on a Monday night so decided to eat at Spice Rouge. Friendly attentive staff, prompt service, although not too busy while we were there.Huge Onion Bhaji starters, very tasty but would have just had a main course if I had known. All 4 of us fully enjoyed the meal, reasonable prices and tasty dishes.No complaints from any of our foursome so would return again in future if in the Old Town area.

Chose this restaurant because it was easy to walk to from our hotel and it have fairly good reviews.Lovely food if a little hotter on some dishes we are used to.Here's the rub. There were 5 of us seated at 7pm on a Saturday. Food served quickly and the place was full by 7.30. When it came to Deserts they only had pre-packed Icecreams. Nothing else. When we declined the icecream and before we could order coffee we were presented with the bill. It had a dish on it we never ordered or recieved as well as having 12.5% service charge added. We refused to pay either of these additions, paid up quickly and they couldn't get us out the door quick enough. As we left it became obvious why they wanted us out. There were around 4/5 waiting to be seated.

I Have eaten solo here and with a friend before but this time on my own. As soon as i got in the door i was told a little aggressively that i could only have my table for an hour it was cold and draughty . When i started ordering the waiter walked away before i finished ordering. Then my order arrived with items missing. I thought maybe there was a language barrier. I ordered again but the order was ignored and when i tried to speak to a waiter or the manager he simply ignored me.. When i asked to speak to the manager i was refused. I honestly think this was cultural as i was a solo female. I never had this problem when i visited with others. I spoke with a member of staff who really wasn't understanding made excuses and refused to say why the manager was refusing to come over. They will be glad to hear with that attitude i will not recommend this restaurant. I was made to feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. Pretty shocking. I was nothing but polite.

We had our team Xmas meal in this restaurant..The food was delicious ..The customer service was good . Highly recommended

We had dinner here on a Friday night and it was really great. We ordered a selection of dishes which were all delicious (especially the chicken jalfrezi). This place never fails us and we order takeaway from here too sometimes. Reliable quality. Very friendly staff. Highly recommended.

Wasn’t sure what to have, loads of choice. Staff were attentive and suggested the lamb Naga (on the bone) which was spot on. Reasonably priced and good quality. Staff were engaging and polite, well worth a visit (from Isle of Wight)

It had 3 starters, 3 maincourses and 3 sides.. also extra fresh salad, tomatos, salsas etc. we found it very tasty and more than enough for a great price. We will come again!

Ate here with a group from work last week. We had not booked but they were happy to accomadate a group of 8. Service was attentive with out being overbaring and the waiter had a good banter. Food was ok without being special, huge Onion Bagees but a bit on the bland side.

Turned up, had poppodoms and ordered starter. Starter arrived, ordered calamari and fish pakora for starter. Arrived and calamari was plain and boiled, no spice and fish pakora was also no spice. When questioned by staff they stated our choices were lightly spiced. They also started talking in their own language slagging us off when little did they know that I'm half indian and understood every word. We paid for what we had, and left sharp! Will never visit again. Avoid at all costs.

Attentive staff, comfortable surroundings. Good food. And nice, cold beer! We were a party of 12, work colleagues and a birthday celebration. The food arrived in a timely fashion. Everybody enjoyed it, no complaints whatsoever. Recommended.

As a well dined curry eater being from Bradford, I’ve had many curries. However, after stopping in Stevenage on our way to the channel tunnel we went to this place which I have to say was the best curry I’ve ever had. Naans were perfect, curry was perfect and beer was perfect.

We've eaten at this restaurant several times noe and will say it's an absolute favourite within our circle of friends. The staff are friendly, will help with food choices and recommend some really tasty dishes you may never have tried or heard of before. The chef will make something with a little more of a kick if that's something you like. Lovely clean place in the heart of the Old Town High Street in Stevenage.

Visited here for a quick dinner after a long tiring day and can say this place is lovely. The food was so tasty, really full of flavour and every dish had its own distinct taste (unlike some places that all taste the same no matter what you order) I can really recommend the lentil spinach and garlic side dish. Everything can out hot with very polite servers and a quick service. Definitely recommend trying this place!

Visited here with my family today and from the start the waiter was so rude . Ordered drinks which arrived and were totally flat . waiter was so rude and took them only to replace with awful attitude and more flat drinks , We walked out he was so bad which never have done in any restaurant before now !!!! My partner and I fancied a curry and remembered this place as we came a few years ago. We’ve recently experienced some very ‘try hard’ restaurants with poor service and food. Attempted style over substance sort of places... so this was a great discovery!

Called in on spec to see if we could get a table for 4 on a Friday night and were lucky enough to be successful. The food was delicious and not overpriced (for southerners lol), well worth it. Good atmosphere and pleasant staff. Will definitely return when back in the area.

First of all I'd like to say something about the service. It seemed to me that all the waiters were either fed up, had attitude, hated their jobs or were just bored. It's not a great experience. Poppodums were OK. Onion bhaji starter is huge but to me it seemed greasy and luke warm. Would be much better splitting it into 2 and getting it crispy on the outside. Chicken jalfrezi was fine but again, quite greasy and not enough sauce. Mushroom rice was also slightly greasy. Paratha was good though. All said, I don't think I'd rush back. Far too much oil on the plate for my liking.

We went here last night, we were a group of blokes, all with different tastes, a lot of us had the giant onion bargi’s, the Naans were lovely, quite light rather than at some other restaurants where they can be very heavy,

With a few curry houses to choose from we are glad this was the one we picked.

Best naan I’ve ever had. Mains and rice were a bit small. Food was good although the madras wasn’t that hot. Reasonably priced. Service was slow. I would eat here again

Stevenage is not a great place to eat. Very average restaurants, catering to a low common denominator. But Spice Rouge is at least a good quality Indian restaurant, THE place to go in the High Street if you want at least ONE decent meal in the Town.

Food and service weren't great. Slow night for the restaurant but that doesn't excuse clearing all the tables, including taking the flower vase away from our table before we had finished and making a very obvious point of clearing up whilst we were still there (we appeared to have been the only ones but this was well before 10pm) no offer if serving

We’ve been here many times to both eat in and for takeaways but this was the first time we led tried their Sunday Buffet where you help yourself to a number of dishes laid out at one end.

11 of us went to the Spice Rouge tonight for a works night out. The food and service were very good but it was spoilt by what I can only see as a sneaky way to get more money out of the customer without them realising. I had read on here about other people finding additional charges had been made on their bill in the hope they wouldn't spot it and I'm sure they tried it with us to the tune of £23. When we received the bill (which is hand written) we checked it over and it looked ok at first and went to give 10% tip but then noticed, squeezed between the starters and mains, SC £23. We queried it and the waiter said he would find out what it was (as if he didn't know) and came back and said it was service charge! I have never known a restaurant to put it in the middle of the bill, there was room at the bottom under the total to include it so can only assume they were using tactics to diddle us out of a tip twice.

Jack went over and above with the treatment we recieved ! Friendly and very helpful, jack made us feel very comfortable this was our first time here and we will be returning ! Food was amazing and service was brilliant, well done lads

After being refused entry to their Buffett nights for being on my own!!?at the Taste of India restaurant I decided to go here. The food was superb. Being half indian myself I asked for Keema peas (not on menu) and they made it for me no questions asked. The tarka dhall was to due for. Service was excellent. Will be returning. They accept all payments not just cash like previous restaurant.

Really liked this restaurant the food is great but really disappointed when we checked our bill and they had added over £20.00. We won’t be going back as this looked deliberate and they weren’t very apologetic. Thankfully we hadn’t had too much to drink so had the sense to check.

Came here for an early evening meal and it was already busy, which we took to be a good sign! Extensive menu, reasonably priced and friendly staff, with very tasty food. Really enjoyed it and will definitely come back next time I'm in Stevenage!

The food in this restaurant is as amazing as ever but the whole place is looking tired. The gents toilets has a couldn’t care less feel about it with all the cleaning products stored under the sink and a bricked up window. Sadly the service is also poor with waiters quite distant. We had to ask for serviettes and for our wine as they had placed it in a cooler too far away from our table and despite it being almost empty our glasses were not kept topped up. Please sort it out

I have now been to this restaurant twice and the food was excellent on both occasions. There is a wide choice on the menu and it is well cooked and beautifully served. This restaurant is definitely worth a visit.

I went to the Spiced Rouge last week with 9 friends and we had a really good meal.

So, you know how it is, you are miles from home, working away, and you decide to check the local curry house.

Met up with friends for dinner. Very nice clean restaurant, friendly staff & good service. Food was very nice & portions were adequate. The onion bhaji’s were huge. 1 is more enough, I shared with my hubby. I would visit here again.

Every time we come back here it seems to have gone backwards just a little bit. The food doesn’t seem like it’s the same quality as it once was and I agree with others that the service can be poor and occasionally aggressive which is why we chose to get a takeaway this time.

Tonight I had an evening meal with colleagues at Spice Rouge in Stevenage old town, which is important to stress, the old town!!! Not the main town, which is a concrete eyesore full of reminders why "new towns" all looked the same when they sprung up. But I am not here to talk about Stevenage itself, but the restaurant and food itself.

Ate here with a group of work mates and overall was disapointed with the food. The atmosphere was good well populated curry house so a good start. Waiter was good nice banter and swift service. The issue i had was the food. i had squid as a starter nad it was insipid and rubbery. Jalfezy main was bland and cauliflour bhajy was sloppy and dull. Hopefully just and of day but i didnt enjoy this.

Went to Spice Rouge last Saturday, after having been previously & enjoyed food etc, however on this occasion I can only say I was very disappointed with the food and the confrontational stance by staff.

We visited Spice Rouge last night for my son’s birthday. I was amazed as a coeliac to find I could eat every main course on the menu, and all but three of the starters!

Had to book but food and service very good and did not rush you. Thought it would be busy and cramped but pleasantly surprised

Jus got back from spice rouge. It was very delicious we had paratha amazing best one I've had, chicken korma best one I've had really nice aromas must be a secret ingredient and bombay potatoes amazing and we also had lamb rogan josh and pilau rice I would definitely recommend! Will definitely be coming here again!

Not a bad curry house. Food prepared well and served hot. The service was efficient but hardly friendly. Onion bhaji interesting! Cost ok but maybe a tad higher than others around. Worked out at £25 a head for 6 of us (including drinks but no starters or desserts). Disappointed to find a chair and coats positioned in front of the fire exit.

A friend held a charity event here and it was a set menu. The service was great and the food just kept on coming. The food was excellent - my only criticism is how they present the starters (huge chunk of carrot and cucumber on the side is not attractive). Lovely staff, great food, clean surroundings - what more could you ask for!

Haven’t been to Spice Rouge for a while so decided to go on a whim. Service was quick and friendly enough. Dishes were nice, flavoursome and well portioned. We over ordered so asked for two dishes to be put in take away containers. Bit disappointed that we were charged £2 for the containers! Wouldn’t mind but our bill for 2 came to £50. As an established restaurant they shouldn’t be adopting such a practice especially when there are numerous other restaurants to choose from in the immediate area.

We had an impromptu Saturday night meal here, and although they originally told us they were fully booked when we called in, they managed to squeeze us in before a later booking which was kind of them. However the restaurant did seem to be pretty empty for somewhere that was fully booked!Service was very efficient and the food was absolutely delicious. I was even tempted away from my favourite Indian dish and wasn't disappointed with my choice. The food was very well presented and perfectly cooked, and I wouldn't hesitate to come here again.

Had a good night out here on Wednesday. All four of us enjoyed the food but as good as it was it still came up a touch short. I had the chicken chat starter which was good and had some decent fresh salad with it, only downside was the chicken could have been a touch hotter (spicy). The dansak main was good but a bit on the small side, as was the portion of rice. It was pretty good but could improve without costing the earth.Service was ok but a bit rushed even though it was not busy.
