Spice garden in South Tyneside

The food and service here were excellent. The staff were very pleasant, friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. The portions were large and of good quality. We travelled from Birmingham to visit relatives and were not sure it would be as good as our Birmingham Balti triangle, but it exceeded all expectations . Will definitely return and highly recommend.

Food was really below average, to say the least, not worth the money we paid. Nan bread wasn't well cooked, the curry was very hot the another dish malayan curry was like a soup. Next day I wasn't feeling well. So they never see me there again

My family and I went tonight to celebrate my dad's birthday. From the start the staff were absolutely wonderful, really kind and attentive. The food didn't take long at all, it was all fresh tasting and delicious. The set menu is such a fab idea, really recommend. Shashlik is £2 more but it was absolutely amazing, so well worth it. My husband loved his jalfrezi, my dad had a bhuna he enjoyed, my mam loved her rogan josh & my 9 year old loved the kids curry too!

I have eaten here on several occasions and always enjoyed the food and found the waiter service to be first class.

Ordered chicken tika masala- delicious taste. Rice was fine but serving too small. Great service. Back for visit #2- had hariali chicken and steamed rice- a distinctive green dish with coconut and almond- absolutely delicious and not spicey. Again, rice serving too small

Excellent food last night. I ordered Chicken Bhuna and Pilau Rice. Everything was perfect and tasted as good as it looked. Very happy with everything.

Our usual restaurant was closed on a Monday so decided to eat here. Only been once years ago. So glad we chose it. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. We ordered off the specials menu. Lots of choice. All food was delicious and we all left very satisfied. I think this will be our new favourite restaurant in Shields.

What a fantastic experience. We pre booked for food after the great north run. The food was absolutely delicious and the service even better. Really reasonably priced. A special thanks to Getu for his excellent service and entertainment. We would highly recommend. We will definitely be back again.

Curry was excellent. Good value for money. Kids menu is missing pizza. Lots of options on the menu, from English dishes to very spicy Ceylon dishes. Good for a light meal if you just want a special rice, or a larger meal.

Only fault Dansak did not taste good tasted as if it had to much curry powder or other spice. Uneadable unfortunately

Been visiting Spice Garden regularly since coming to South Shields for work. Wouldn't consider going anywhere else on Ocean Road for a curry. Excellent food and very friendly staff.

First visit to New Castle, went to this place after seeing the rating of 4.7 stars, I am not going to recommend this place to anyone. Ordered drinks, checked the whole menu very little vegetarian options, told the staff will stick with drinks and no food, within seconds the staff behaviour changed, he said we need to vacate the table in next 10 mins and he shouted the bill amount loudly from the counter and told us to pay, this was not where he stopped later he commented on our race and instructed his staff loudly not to take INDIAN customers or serve them in future which was totally unacceptable and something that no one should tolerate. Later we asked for the VAT bill which was not looking right. Very unpleasant experience, would request all asians not to go for this place. The staff needs better training on customer service.

My companions and I were initially drawn to your restaurant due to its stellar reviews and was eager to experience the dining environment you offer. Upon our arrival, we found ourselves at a loss when perusing the menu due to a lack of vegetarian options. We decided not to order any food items and communicated this to our server. Shortly after, we were approached by another staff member who informed us, with what we perceived as an arrogant demeanor, that we had to vacate our table within 10 minutes due to an upcoming reservation. After settling the bill for our drinks, I noticed a discrepancy in the amount charged versus the amount listed on the handwritten VAT receipt. The receipt indicated a total of £15.30, yet the charge was £15.70. This minor overcharge, while not substantial, is concerning and prompts me to question the integrity of the billing process. Furthermore, during our departure, we overheard a staff member making inappropriate comments regarding my race. Such behavior is deeply troubling and entirely unacceptable in any setting, especially within the hospitality industry. In light of these events, I would like to pose the following questions to your management team: 1. Why was there an additional charge of £0.40 not accounted for on the VAT receipt? 2. If there was a pending reservation for our table, why were we seated there in the first place? 3. The remark made by your staff member about serving ‘original customers’ was quite unsettling. Could you please clarify who is considered an ‘original customer’ at your establishment? 4. Given the treatment we received, which starkly contrasts the positive reviews online, how do you ensure the authenticity of the ratings posted on Google? I trust that you will take this feedback seriously and address these concerns promptly. It is my hope that this review will serve as a catalyst for improvement in customer service and inclusivity within your restaurant.

Very bad customer service by the manager and the staff members. They commented on our race and asked us to leave the restaurant in 10 minutes while we were having drinks. Never got the chance to try food.. The attitude of waiter and manager was one of the worst.. Would not recommend this place to anyone. Not even my enemies. Don't go to this restaurant if you are an Asian because according to the manager we are not their real customers.

Waiter rude . Very slow service not the best curry’s by a long shot

Very rude waiter. Always pushed plates into face when serving. Food very watery. Staff advised he did not know why food was watery and that his waiter was new.

Me and my friends were craving some indian food and based on the good review we went to this restaurant. But have to say it was one of the worst customer service that I had ever encountered. To my shock this bad attitude towards the customer was conducted by the manager himself in front of his staff and other customers. The manager rushed us to decide on giving the drink orders. We were a party of 5 and me and my two other friends being vegetarian, we found that the vegetarian options were very limited. Due to which we were hesitant to place our food orders. We expressed our concern to the staff member and the manager as well but instead of helping us out with the menu, the manager again rushed us to order the food. Upon which we decided we wont be eating there. We stated the manager that we will be only having our drinks and will be leaving once our drinks are finished. The manager upon which he said to leave in 10 minutes because he has another table coming. He quickly went to get us the bill and asked us to pay. The whole restaurant was empty except one table. The manager in front of those customers stated that he wont be serving people from my race anymore to his staff. He also mentioned that we were not his real customers which was to us quite shocking. The whole attitude changing just because we don’t want to eat there due to our dietary restrictions took us aback. We also paid for our drinks. So we don’t know what the manager was upset about. His response towards my race in general was quite shocking and rude for me and my friends. I would definitely not recommend this to anyone. A good dining out experience is made up of good service and great food. We live in a globalised economy and if you are not their real customer as stated by the respective manager. I would not recommend to go there.

I recently visited this restaurant , expecting a pleasant dining experience based on its reputed reviews on google . Unfortunately, my visit was marred by a deeply disappointing encounter with the staff, who treated me poorly based on my nationality. I believe that this restaurant is not even worth give one star .Upon arrival, I was initially ignored by the host. When I finally managed to get their attention, I was met with a cold, dismissive attitude. We were forced to seat on the table by the choice of the restaurant staff, despite the restaurant being completely empty . The situation worsened once I was seated. The waiter assigned to my table was incredibly rude and dismissive. When I attempted to ask about the menu, I was met with curt responses and a clear lack of interest in assisting me. My attempts to engage in polite conversation were met with disdainful looks and condescending remarks. It was evident that my nationality played a role in the treatment I received, as I observed other diners being treated with the utmost courtesy and respect on there arrival in the restaurant. Despite all of these we placed an order for drinks but the behaviour of the duty manager was very rude towards us .Therefore we decided not to order food in the restaurant as we where not being treated very will , so we told the waiter to get us the bill for the drinks as we where not happy about the atmosphere of the restaurant. It’s disheartening to see such discrimination in what should be a welcoming environment. A restaurant should be a place where all guests feel valued and respected, regardless of their background.I am a professional hotelier,I have been working in hospitality industry for past 5 years .The restaurants manager is abusing and insulting the guest is not at all corrects ,he is making personal comments your nationality.I mean that not fair for any guest ,You can’t be RACIST towards anyone .There should be zero tolerance for racism and I hope the restaurant management addresses this issue promptly and ensures that no other guest has to endure such treatment. As it stands, I cannot in good conscience recommend this establishment to anyone seeking a positive dining experience. Discrimination has no place in the service industry, and I urge potential patrons to consider this before making a reservation.

Family outing for five. The missing sixth member had gone off to watch Everton try to play football....silly boy. The sensible five remaining had five different starters, five different main meals and a plethora of different breads side dishes and pickles etc. I write for us all when I say everyone was delighted with the great quality of our chosen foods and the efficient service provided by all the staff. This restaurant remains our firm favourite.

Came with the wrong order first. Then came back after realising and asked us to pack it up to give him back and then get our food back. Once we got our correct order the food was cold and everything had to be reheated.

It is our “go to “ restaurant when we visit South Shields - a long way from our home in Essex so it is not very often but it is a delightful restaurant. The service is impeccable and the food is superb. What you read is what you get - if it says medium strength it is exactly that, not bland or eye wateringly hot. Best of all the food arrives heat hot, not tepid. There is a good selection of drinks to accompany your meal. All facilities are clean and the restaurant is nicely decorated and welcoming. The restaurant director, Rukon Chowdhury, is always in attendance and ensures that everything is perfect so that you have not just a good meal but an enjoyable evening. We recommend Spice Garden unreservedly and look forward to returning.

What a jewel of a restaurant. We are not from South Shields and chose Spice Garden by chance last time we were in the area. We now return to it when we are there. The service is efficient but not hurried and the staff will speed up or slow down to your wishes. The food is superb and exactly as described - medium strength is just that and not bland or eye wateringly hot. The food is served heat hot and not tepid. There is a good range of drinks to accompany your meal. The director, Rukon Chowdhury, is always in attendance and ensures that you have not only good food and service but also an enjoyable evening. We recommend Spice Garden wholeheartedly.

Chicken tikka starter was very firm Onion bhaji was nice Chicken masala was nice and the beef korma was too

First and last time ordering from here. The masala sauce was the strangest colour and had absolutely no flavour. Chicken tikka rogan josh was bland, not a hint of flavour and the chicken tough. Chips would have been ok if not so greasy. Very disappointed.

First time ordering from here. Sadly the masala sauce was very thin, almost watery which was disappointing. Chips were nice standard chunky chips and rice decent. Only 3 bits of small chicken in the curry too, considering this was a sharing meal it didn’t cover two of us. Naan bread was okay, nothing amazing. Overall disappointed with the meal with many other Indian takeouts offering better quality.

An early evening outing for four people each having entirely different choices of meal. All 4 of us were extremely well satisfied with the whole experience. My own Naga Tuk Tuk starter followed by king prawn phall and peas pilau were absolutely delicious. A shared cheese naan and spicy chips along with the opening pappadums were all first class and could not be faulted. Our waiters were as efficient and friendly throughout. Rukon the owner was his usual gentlemanly self. In short this was a very enjoyable experience for us all. Spice Garden is highly recommended by me a curry veteran.

Me and my boyfriend came here tonight to celebrate the anniversary of our first ever date in 2021. We went to Spice Garden and have been every year since, so this is our 3rd year coming. We were worried we wouldn’t get seated as it was busy but the staff made it no issue for us to get seated. We honestly couldn’t fault it everything was perfect. The food was unreal (quick also) and the staff were so lovely. We will definitely be back in 2024! Thank you for a lovely evening

Delivery was great, but was the strangest curry my daughter and I have ever had. We both ordered plain chicken curry and there was barely any flavour in it whatsoever - if I was blindfolded I would've sworn I was eating soup, not curry! The naan bread was nice, but the curry was beyond bland to be honest.. We ordered from here simply because of the positive reviews, so the flavourless curry was very surprising to say the least - especially taking into account the really high prices compared to other local Indian restaurants.. Total waste of money as most of it went in the bin, sorry..

Heard amazing things about this place so I'll dine in sometime to give it a second-chance because everywhere has bad days (and I'll amend this review if it's good) but honestly, it was the worst Indian takeaway I've ever had. Chicken was dry and tough, the paneer tikka starter was actually chicken tikka in a white watery sauce with two tiny pieces of paneer, the rice was tasteless, the bhajis were rock-hard and the naan was tasteless and tough. Not one thing to enjoy. I believe the owner is nice though and has been there for a long time so I'll give it another go one day.

Regularly go here, have never had a bad meal. I find this to be one of the best value curry restaurants. The manager is very welcoming and food is always tasty. I usually ask for one of their dishes with added spice and it's always perfect.

Chicken was hard in curry chips nearly broke my teeth the rice was all stuck together and had big bits of onion in that was ment to of been chopped pompodoms were soggy and naan had no flavour

Decent enough. Went for the mid-week special. Three courses for £12.95, extras and drinks totted up to £39. Not that cheap. Staff Ok, food OK, at 530pm ambience nil.
