Spice Garden in Hertsmere

Went there for our anniversary dinner. The service and food was excellent. The king prawn tikka masala and king prawn biryani were to die for. A lovely setting for an intimate date. Highly recommend and will defo dine there again.

We're not from the local area but were looking for somewhere to eat after going to Harry Potter studios and this was recommended on trip advisor. I had a jalfrezzi which was delicious and spicy. The food was great and the staff were friendly and attentive. The price was really good considering how nice the food was! Great Indians and would come again if visiting the area again!

Second visit to this restaurant (first was a while back before a football match). Better than I remembered it. Food was excellent. Nicely presented. Full of complex flavours. Perfect portion size (a lot of sauce, but still with sufficient chicken/lamb). Together with friendly, attentive service - can’t fault it in the slightest.

Very welcoming and friendly service, food was delicious - some of the best Indian food we have tasted - it’s a shame we aren’t local as we would definitely be back on a regular basis.

I visited here on the off chance today as I was passing and I am so glad I did as the food was exceptional. I ordered a chicken tikka starter and a king prawn biryani which they asked if i wanted to spice it, which I did. I have to say it was one of the best biryanis that I have ever had. The gentleman who took my order and served was very attentive and courteous. I will be back.

Staying on business. Decided to try this place as it was no 6 on Tripadvisor The whole time I was there, I was the only customer. The host was super friendly. Music was great. Over the years I must have eaten in over 200 Indian restaurants and I can honestly say that this was one of the worst ! All of the food was so over cooked it was terrible. Even the rice was burnt. The nan bread was like a brick. I complained and the host brought the chef out who just shrugged his shoulders, smiled at me and walked off. Appalling ! I won’t be going back.

First visit here and it lived up to the expectations of the majority of reviews on here. Very friendly staff and the menu was full of lots of choices for both Vegan & meat eating options which is really important to us as we are one of each. Just had a main course & side dishes each & it was very very nice. Both mains spot on & the Tandoori Roti was well done but not too dry - excellent. Usual drinks on offer - I had Cobra & my wife had red wine which were both very enjoyable. When we are back in the area we will definitely return. Very good prices too.

All meals were tasty, well presented, seemed freshly cooked and promptly served. Not the best Indian meal I’ve ever had but by no means the worst and I would certainly visit again if working in the area

We had dinner at the spice garden early in the evening at 6pm on a Friday as we were going to a show in BBC studios. Initially, we were the only people in the restaurant but 15mins later it was nearly full. The food was excellent compared to higher-priced Indian restaurants. I had the mixed grill which was cooked perfectly and sublime. Nan bread was melt in the mouth. I can highly recommend this restaurant.

AVOID !!!!! Spice garden!!! 🤢 We ordered food , when we got home I started eating and realised how “ off”the bread tasted. It was MOULDY. We opened up the bread to find green mould everywhere. We rang up straight away and they almost accused us of lying and told us to bring the food back and they will “ investigate” … as I was being sick at home my boyfriend drove to spice garden with all the food and the bread. The owner was shouting at him over the phone and said ” no refunds for the whole meal just the bread” which I am appalled at. They then called the police on my boyfriend which I am so angry about. He was so calm and polite and just wanted our money back. He wasn’t rude or violent he just simply said “ we want our money back” The police escorted him off the premises and they told him to come back tomorrow. The following day After a THIRD trip to spice garden ( baring in mind we live 15 minutes away) they finally gave us a refund when I turned up in person after recovering from my sickness. Please see photos attached. I am so upset by how we were treated by them. 6 car trips and 2 days later is not how you rectify a food standard issue.

Have used restaurant for years but very disappointed tonight when my Jalfrezi arrived without green chilliest. Tasted quite bland. When I called the restaurant they tried to convince me that Jalfrezi was not meant to be hot. Either disingenuous or lacking knowledge. Not likely to use them again. Otherwise food good.

I visited in September 2021, I eat a vegan diet and my husband eats an omnivore diet. The staff were very friendly, and helpful when I had a couple of questions about the vegan options, of which there were several. I had the vegetable samosas and the chickpea chole, and it was all delicious. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his food too. Great service, fab food, lovely atmosphere, and right next to Elstree Studio, the reason for our visit. Whenever we are at Elstree Studio again we will definitely be back. Wonderful!

Just had a return visit to the Spice Garden. Such delicious food and kind, efficient service again. This has been a perfect restaurant to visit while working here and having to stay over. The palak paneer and mushroom rice are my top tip!

We went here to celebrate my birthday. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. There is a great selection on the menu to accommodate all tastes. There is an excellent vegetarian/vegan section. There was not a long wait for the food which came in generous portions. My favourites in particular were the sizzling paneer and Achari chicken. I found the cost to be very reasonable. We will definitely be coming back again. Thank you!

2nd visit in 4 days.The food here is very good in my opinion.Sizzling Chicken Tikka & Lamb Chops + Butter Chicken.My dad likes spinach, so they made a wonderful spinach Bhaji for us.Cobra Beer on tap, table water offered + other hot & cold drinks.Lovely people. Will be back

I really could’ve chosen anything from the vegan selection, the options were so varied and looked so delicious. Very happy with my Punjabi chole and the service was very warm and friendly.

Myself and friends were staying at a hotel in Borehamwood for a few days whilst visiting London and the surrounding area. We visited this restaurant on a Saturday evening. The welcome was friendly and they were very accommodating to the celiac in our group, making sure that she could choose dishes that were suitable for her. As for the food, my seekh kebab starter was extremely nice, very meaty, but I did find the onion bhaji to be a little dry. No yoghurt sauce was provided as is normal at the Indian restaurants that I normally visit at home. The main course was hotter than suggested on the menu and was a little beyond the level of spice that I can comfortably cope with. Dishes were labelled as either no chillies, 1, 2, or 3. I always avoid the really spicy food but can normally cope quite easily with other levels. The taste was also not really to my liking, totally different to what I am used to, but this of course is my personal taste. The others in the group really enjoyed their kormas and mixed grill. The choice of rices was extremely poor.*** Beware the price of soft drinks. The menu says £3 for a Diet Coke. We expected this to be a full pint and not a small glass!! What amounts to £6 for a pint of Coke is daylight robbery! ***Overall I think 3 out of 5 is a fair rating for this restaurant. Very friendly but bettered by many others for the food and price of drinks.

My first visit was post-lockdown - and the restaurant was very quiet. However, they served the best food. I've since been back a few times and not only did they remember me (and my orders), but it was lovely to see a few more tables filled with other diners. I was there with picky eaters and vegetarians, and everyone I've taken has felt well looked after and very happy with their food. Can't ask for more than that. I've been with my partner, as a family and with friends...

Accepting that this was my first sit down meal this year, I expected the prices to be a bit more than last year, I could not believe that the soft drinks were £4.90 a glass when the bottles they came in would be about £1.50 at the supermarket for two or three litres. It’s a shame as the food was good but this is extortionate. Maybe ask if you can bring your own soft drinks to focus their pricing a bit mire fairly?

Came down for the big game at Wembley and rounded off our weekend with a visit here. Surroundings were welcoming, food was delicious and the service was first class. Looking forward to returning when Scotland reach the final of the Euros in a few weeks.

We visited the Spice Garden with local family who recommended it. Excellent starters and mains, goan fish curry and chicken jalfrezi very tasty. Really good service too.

Recommended by a local as their favourite place to eat. We were fourty minutes late due to a mix up with our taxi, but it didn't faze them one bit. Social distancing measures were in place, so I instantly felt comfortable. Clean, bright and welcoming the waiter was charming and personable.Starter was a shared mixer, sheek kebab, veg samosa, chicken tandoori and the biggest, most deliciously scrumptious Onion bhaji it has ever been my pleasure to eat.( I have eaten a lot!) The rest of the meal was just as excellent, beautifully spiced and very generously portioned. If I lived locally I would certainly be a regular.

Ordered a takeaway and could not eat any of the 3 mains. The chicken tikka, tandoori chicken and king prawn tikka were so salty they were not edible. It was heart attack material! I called the restaurant to report the issue, the gentleman who I spoke to was not very sympathetic or compliant and was trying to dismiss it by saying it was the 20 hour marinade that caused the salty taste. We had to throw the whole meal away though he did send a replacement chicken tikka but I told the delivery driver to keep it. Very disappointed. In hindsight I should have taken the whole order back to the restaurant and requested a refund. Would not recommend it and will never be going back.

A fantastic Indian meal made especially for us with kosher meat as we keep a kosher home. Also made dairy free. Staff were so helpful and service was amazing. Can’t wait to have another meal there! Highly recommend.

We've ordered a few takeaways from here over lockdown and the food has been excellent.The Chicken Tikka and Sheek kebabs are excellent are far better than a regular Indian takeaway with properly cooked and spiced with succulent and tasty meat.A lovely and consistent local restaurant that needs to be supported.

Being an indian i always struggle to find an authentic indian food place in the UK. There are plenty of Indian restaurants in the uk and claim to be authentic taste of india but they are really not and mostly run by people who even are not Indians so of course they don't make authentic indian food , but after coming to the Spice Garden restaurant in Borehamwood, i could feel real indian authentic taste again. Prepared by indian shefs brings exactly the same taste as the Delhi food. Just love it and will recommend this resturant to those who really want to go for authentic Indian food. My ratings to them is 5/5.

They just started the new menu for both lunch and dinner. I ordered food yesterday and the staff was very polite and helped me a lot to explain with the menu. I had paneer tikka and chicken tikka masala along with pulao rice and garlic naan. The food tastes so delicious and lipsmacking and so much for such a reasonable price It was a great idea to ordered my dinner from here.Will order again soon❤️

Ordered a takeaway from the new menu for me and my family and was the worst meal we have ever eaten all our curries just tasted like it was just covered in pure curry powder, the curries that are not even suppose to be that hot was just hot as it was full of pure currie power and couldn't even be eaten,over priced for what it was, we use to order regularly for many years total disappointed wont be ordering again sadly

It was a tasty and enjoyable experience. I'll definitely come back! And I don't know what I can say so... yeah, it was very good.

Recently launched a new menu and honestly it is some of the most tasty and unique Indian food you’ll find in the uk. Not what you’d expect to find in a small town. I would urge you to try it out. I’ll be back very soon

I visited here for a family event. The table was ready for us when we arrived, and the restaurant wasn't too busy. Wine, and beer, although I personally didn't drink, were served and the lager (Cobra) was said to have been extremely nice, with the drink going down very easily! Our order was placed, and thankfully we did at the time we did, as the restaurant soon filled up with pre-booked tables. Our starters came out, and were hot. The paneer could have done with being a bit warmer, however the onion bhajis are the best I've had. Further drinks were served promptly. Our starters were also cleared away promptly. I noted that a table that hadn't pre-booked, walked in at approx. 7.34pm. There was one table left, and staff were heard discussing that this was booked for 7.30, however these customers hadn't arrived as yet. The customers were seated here, however not 2mins later the customers that had booked for 7.30 arrived, and were told, "As we are busier than normal, food service is a little slower than normal tonight so people are staying for longer". Although yes, the restaurant was busy, I don't think was the reason the couple that had booked had to venture elsewhere, as whilst in there, only one sitting of each table was completed.Mains were served, and were tasty. A mix of rice, curries, naan breads, were served to our party, and the food was plentysome, with even some left over. As the restaurant was busy, there was no 'food check' ("How is your meal") completed, and when wanting to order further drinks, I felt the wait was long at times, however again, the staff were rushed off their feet. After finishing our mains, we waited close to an hour until the plates were cleared away. I also noted that a table ordered their meal, and it seems this order was not forwarded to the kitchen and they were completely forgotten about. They were asked if they would like their bill whilst still waiting for their main meals. The food was lovely. There were just a couple of bits of the service that perhaps another pair of hands could assist with, however I know how hard staff in restaurants work, and also know how it must be difficult to be able to have extra staff on at this trying time. I also noted that the flow of take away meals was constant throughout the night, showing, thus putting more demand on the kitchen staff.I would recommend this place for the food, and would happily go back, however potentially not during a busy time.

I was visiting Borehamwood for one night through my work and the reception at the hotel I was staying at the Ibis Borehamwood suggested Spice garden was the best restaurant in Borehamwood. - I decidedl to take their advice and visited Spice garden .. without doubt the best curry I have ever had in the Uk!!! - outstanding food flavours and service - you must visit.Neil from Glasgow

they put their prices up for the eat out help out scheme which means you basically don’t get 50% off at all and pay the same price you’d pay without the discount. fuming. wish i had my money back, not on at all.

Went to celebrate my wedding anniversary. The food was amazing, great service and environment. I am dairy and gluten free and the waitress knew what she was talking about and reccomended great options.

Food turns up an hour early, in the middle of my kid's bedtime. send it away and ask them to deliver at correct time. then get a text to say it will now be late! when i ring up to enquire how late it will be, the lady on the phone was so rude. well it might be 10 minutes, or 15 minutes. depends on traffic. we're not sure really, the kitchen is busy. you had an HOUR to sort it out, and make a happy customer. honestly, never been treated like that before by any restaurant.

From the starters to the main course each and every dish was delicious! Best Bajis fantastic chicken Jalfresi and a wonderful lamb kastori. Faultless! And lovely service from attentive staff! Can’t wait to go back......

Absolutely loved the food here. This was one of my few best Indian restaurent experiences in the UK. The frescos on the wall of Rajasthani Banjara's, camels and sand dunes along with the traditional Indian music created a unique dining atmosphere. The Chef was kind enough to prepare a unique eggplant sampling dish upon request. I have never had anything like this before. I would give this place five stars for the quality of food, service, ambience and pricing. Definitely looking forward to visiting again next when I'm there in the area.

Took my mum and dad for a meal for their anniversary cut a long story short. The restaurant was more like a cafe. The food and service was very poor. The food was warm and watery. You could probably buy better curries from the supermarket. Over all this restaurant is over priced and poor. I would not recommend this restaurant.

I usually get take away from the restaurant and when I collect, it is often done quickly as there are not that many customers. Fortunately, the night I visited the restaurant was busier than normal. However, the service was slow in delivering the mains, more so than other curry restaurants. This is maybe because they didn't expect it to be busy, I can't be sure. It's a shame as the food is very good. Hopefully the waiting is just due to a brief over capacity for a Tuesday night rather than a systemic issue.

We arrived at 5.15 after seeing the “Open “ sign on the door but it was closed almost the same time a lady arrived and unlocked the door she said it opens at 5.30pm and kindly said we cold go in then as it was cold outside. We ordered popadoms and beers while we waited. We ordered a Bhuna and a Dopiaza mushroom rice and 2 plain naans. The food was tasty but I wish the plates had been hotter to keep the food warm for longer. The lady was very pleasant and explained the murals on the walls.

My meat Madras came with a basic 'brown gravy' type sauce.The meat came with a little too much fat for my liking.Chef could have trimmed it more and also spent more time developing a richer sauce.All a matter of taste of course but I would rate the food on the level of 'home cooking/cafe' rather than High Street restaurant.

A delicious dinner after watching a TV recording at Elstree Studios. Quite unassuming from the outside, hand painted murals inside of Indian life & quite delicious food. Chicken korma, tikka masala, pilau rice, Bombay aloo & Peshawar naan were all delicately spiced & flavoursome. Salted lassi with coriander was a good choice too. Would definitely visit again.

Visited recently with friends and was quite impressed. I understand it is under new management and does seem more popular now so I guess it must be better. They have a really good specials menu where you’ll find dishes not available in other Indian Restaurants as well as the usual choices. Will definitely visit again.

We visited Spice Garden for dinner after long day in London. One of the reason, closed to our hotel and we also like this kind of food. The food was delicious and enough spicy. Postions also was okay. Service very friendly and nice. 34£ for dinner for two and two beers is okay. I can recommend this place.

Very dissapointed with my takeaway

Booked a table for 20 people and everyone decided to choose there own food choices. We were surprised how efficient the staff were and how excellent the food was. Highly recommended and will be going there more often.

We called in on the offchance and because of positive reviews, we were not disappointed. We had an excellent meal. I’m both dairy and gluten intolerant and the lovely lady who served us was extremely helpful and there was a good choice of dishes for me. It is clear that the chef knows their stuff - sauces made from scratch and not out of a mass catering bottle. I thoroughly recommend this restaurant.

The owners are relatively new, took over a year ago. They provided friendly and efficient service & seemed like lovely people.

Staying over in Borehamwood wood and decided to nip out for a bite to eat. The food here was excellent, the service faultless. Would highly recommend.

We visited the Spice Garden on 6 November to celebrate my partners mothers 60th birthday. We were warmly welcomed and seated and the service was outstanding with nothing being too much trouble and the waitress was very polite. The environment is comfortable, clean but not too fussy - exactly what I want when going for Indian cuisine.

What a pleasure this meal was, very friendly staff and I’d say best fish curry I have eaten (and no, I’m not related).

I organised a relaxed business dinner here for 15 people. The service was impeccable and the food delicious. I thoroughly recommend this restaurant and will certainly be going back.

I think this place has recently been taken over as I visited here a year ago (ish) and didnt have a great experience. However its now become my regular curry house. Excellent food, with curries tasting individually different and authentic. Execellent and attentive staff if you eat it. Would highly recommend!

We went to this restaurant for dinner at 10. Had an amazing time there! Food was superb, ambience was fabulous and the staff was very polite and welcoming with some melodious music playing in the background. The interiors gave me a feeling of my hometown..would love to visit this place again and again!!

We haven't eaten in but it looks nice, we regularly get delivery from here and it has never disappointed.

This was our third visit to Spice Garden. Staff always smiling as ever. We were seated straight away and ordered our usual drinks with freshly made papodums. We opted for mains. We ordered aubergine curry with potato stuffed paratha and plain paratha. The aubergine curry was excellent just like home made. Large pieces of aubergine with onions and garlic. Both the parathas were out of this world. Very good visit and would recommend. Their lunch time thali is excellent as well.

We've eaten at the Spice Garden a couple of times now, and will definitely come back again. The staff are very friendly and attentive, without being intrusive, and the menu has a wide range of old favourites and more unusual dishes (try the chilli garlic mogo starter - delicious!), and everything is wonderfully cooked and presented.

I came to borehamwood last week, i found this restaurant nearby, this is the only and best restaurant in borehamwood. Mr. Harsh warmly welcome everyone with a smiling face and food is taster.

We came to Spice Garden as a last minute family evening out. We were warmly greeted and sat and enjoyed the chilled out ambience as we waited for our meal. Everything was delicious and the waiters were very friendly and attentive. We were even treated to a dish the restaurant was trialling, which was also delicious. Would definitely recommend this restaurant if you live locally or are visiting the area - Elstree Studios is just across the road.

Great food and friendly and attentive staff/managers. I occasionally dine here when I am staying over on business locally - once in two to three weeks and the food here is always fresh, tasty and wholesome. Highly recommended in the area.
