This review is of our family experience at the cafe. We took our seats and ordered lattes from a young waitress. What we received was mediocre machine coffee. We were off to a good start. We then ordered gnocchi and bolognese for mains. When the bolognese arrived, the waitress apologised and said she didn't know what it was .. but I recognised it immediately - defrosted and microwaved bolognese, mixed in with some penne and served without parmesan. The gnocchi was rubber like and without the promised mozzarella. We asked for the cheese at once and several minutes later we were ordered to get up from our chairs and collect it. I was wondering at this point what went into the £9 bolognaise price tag.

We arrived upon recommendation from a local restaurant as they were fully booked. As we walked through the restaurant doors, the room was decorated as if expecting a children’s birthday party. We were greeted by an enthusiastic staff member dressed as a pirate, who escorted us to a table. We were offered drinks and told it was a buffet service. Without doubt the poorest buffet selection we have ever experienced! Nothing was labelled to explain what we were eating. Staff were clueless not only on what food was sat festering on a hot plate but also struggled with the simplest of questions like, “Where is your restroom?” Although there were plenty of staff members in the room, no one seemed able to perform any duties without supervision from a man in a suit, whom I presume to be the manager? Food was quite simply disgusting! Everything was lukewarm and the rice was still rock solid and uncooked. All throughout dinner we were interrupted with pirate jokes and constant attempted entertainment, in spite of the obvious distress of the two young children at our table. However, the pirate did apologise and bring our oldest child a chocolate coin. If only he had learned from this and given the table some space, by the end of the meal I felt like offering him a seat to join us as he was hovering so often. Upon payment we waited at the desk to pay our bill, being igonored by staff for a very long time. When the aforementioned man in a suit was called to attend to us, he was shocked to hear that we were not guests of the hotel and we were made to feel like an inconvenience for merely visiting the restaurant as passers by! All in all a very disappointing and bizzare experience which was definitely not worth the £15 a head! We would not recommend to others and will definitely not be returning!

Perhaps we visited on a bad day, 30 Dec, a Sunday. We didn’t mind that there was no carvery, but we did mind that the food was poor. £4.50 for tasteless tinned soup. The rest of the fare was burgers, hot dogs, sausages, etc. Nothing was hot. It was a shame because the surroundings are great.

We visit Aviemore for a week every September and pop down to centre 2 or 3 times for coffee & cake. This time we decided to have lunch in the carvery. We each had a lovely steak sandwich and a glass of wine. We put our order in just as lunch was going out for the conference of 200 so had a short wait but we were not left wondering as the Head Waiter kept us informed. All in all, a pleasant lunch, and well looked after.

walked up here for sunday carvery, we were first in ,it was just after twelve and so I was first in line. I chose beef, when the chef was carving it I thought he was doing a few slices for everyone, but no, they were all for me ! five big slices of delicious beef, the best I,ve had in a long time, and then you get to help yourself to the trimmings, naturally I had to have two Yorkshire puddings, massive things, broccoli, carrots, parsnips, roasties, and lovely gravy. The best roast dinner in Aviemore I reckon, yes even better than the long established hotel in the main centre, and that's saying something.

Visited for afternoon tea which was on special. Got one for free and let me tell you it was so worth it. Service was impeccable and friendly, and the afternoon tea was one of the best I’ve had. Tea and coffee were replenished as needed and we couldn’t eat all of it and were given a box to take it away for later. Everything was so fresh and tasty. Well done and I’ll be back later in the year.

With travelers coming from around the globe, you would think there was more food options for a huge resort such as the McDonalds. This restaurant had a lovely selection but was hampered by lack of sufficient time to order.

Popped in here for coffee to discover that it is not freshly made coffee but from a machine. Not nearly so good as freshly made from a Costa cafe. However the prices were ridiculous. We normally pay about £4.00 - just under for 2 Costa coffees but here the bill was £5.50 - that is some difference. There are other coffee shops in Aviemore and will use them in future

Dined at Spey Valley Sports Bar restaurant and been treated rudely by one of the chefs named Derrick. The foods were ok but the serving was confusing without labelling of which were mains and which were sides. I then complained to the restaurant manager about the confusion and the chef attitude. Although the manager was helpful enough but failed to apologise towards the chef attitude. Will definitely not dine there again.

Just spent a really dissappointing hour in the Asian buffet! Leaflet promises Thai, Chinese, Indian n Japanese for just £12.95. Reality was just Thai n Chinese but all the dishes tasted the same! The lemon chicken was inedible- the red Thai curry tasted the same as the sweet n sour. I would've tasted more if I'd eaten a pot noodle! I'd have expected this level of bland cuisine from a pontoons camp - macdonalds have seriously let themselves down!

Had lunch here. Restaurant was deserted and cavernous but waitresses helpful. Food was disappointing - works canteen standard cooking and not much choice. The only roast was turkey - so no choice at all in the "carvery". With a little more imagination and better cooking this could be a decent place. As it stands there is little incentive to eat here. The first of a number of let downs in Aviemore.

At 12pm I bought a sandwich from the restaurant. It had lovely, good quality ham on it, but it was overpowered by huge slices of tomato, which were about 1cm wide. I removed the tomato and some of the lettuce. There was also cucumber on there, which when I pulled it out, it was transparent and limp. It looked very odd, so I took the rest of it out. Another piece was the same, and a further one was part transparent and part firm (ish) and looked normal. My deduction here was that it has been placed on something warm, or left out of the fridge. After eating the sandwich, I gave the salad to my dog (he’s a Lab, and will virtually eat anything!). By 2pm, I felt frozen to the bone and my feet were like ice. I commented to a couple of people how cold it was in there, but they didn’t seem to agree - having said that, they were wearing jackets. By 2.30pm I was so cold that I had to leave. On getting home, I whacked my heating up and put on layers of clothing. At 4pm I felt very ill, feverish with a headache, and thought I was starting with the flu. At that point, I had to ring my clients for the following days clinic and cancel them all. My dogs stomach started making horrendous noises, he began having diarrhoea and drinking a lot of water. Stupidly at that point, I never put 2 and 2 together. By 5pm I had severe stomach cramps, followed by diarrhoea. Both myself and the dog were up all night. He was ok by mid Monday, but sadly I was not. I was so severely ill that I was unable to leave the house at all, and 3 days later I had lost 9 lbs. At this point, I informed the MacDonald Aviemore Resort, as I was concerned for the well being of others who may have eaten the same as myself. I couldn't work all week, and by the 7th day, I had lost a total of 14 lbs, which was very frightening and traumatic. I never fully recovered for nearly a month after this incident. I clearly pointed out the fact that I felt the cucumber was to blame, possibly touched by someone who hadn't washed their hands after going to the toilet or touching their nose. And clearly the reason why my dog became ill before I did, as he ate most of the salad. I pointed out that I didn't wish to make a complaint, but just would like it investigated for others safety. Had anyone with a health problem had food poisoning to the extent I did, they would have certainly been admitted to hospital. They promised to investigate it and get back to me. Five weeks later, I sent an e-mail to MAR, asking for a copy of the report on the food poisoning incident. I copied in head office. I received a message from head office about an hour later, who promised to investigate it - having never been informed of it before - mAR had done NOTHING ! I have all this as written proof in e-mails from them, should MAR wish to poo poo (as it were) that any of this be true. Very kind of me not to make a fuss, considering I lost hundreds of pounds in business that week. A couple of weeks later, I received a letter by e-mail. It told me that it wasn't possible to get food poisoning in less than 1-3 days (I'm a nurse and can tell you that this is WRONG !). That the fact I had ingested other food in the previous week meant that that was probably the cause. The fact I had a pet dog (remember that he got food poisoning before me from eating the same thing - and I don't eat dog food). That they never got a stool sample or that I went to the Drs - I was severely ill and completely housebound ! They said they has no other issues with the ham (I said I thought it was the cucumber). They were run off their feet that day, waiters carrying in 20 or more dirty plates at a time, a wedding fair was on and most chefs were preparing food for it, there was only one chef for the whole restaurant - the place was utter chaos ! I am utterly ashamed of the way that MAR initially lied to me, did not investigate it 'til I informed head office, then blamed ME ! I'm only thankful I ate the sandwich - had my friend who has kidney problems ate it, it's likely it would have lead to a hospital admission or much, much worse. Shame on you MacDonald Aviemore Resort ! I have listed a 'terrible rating', not for the taste of the food, but the appalling way my complaint was ignored - hoping I would go away !

Very pleased with the fantastic service that we received at the carvery today. We couldn't fault anything. The restaurant was clean and staff, chef included, were very friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and we will definitely be back. The waiter was very efficient but we were certainly not rushed in any way, able to relax and enjoy the large helpings. We were a large family group with a vegetarian and several children in the party and we were well catered for. The children were delighted with their combinations of sausages, macaroni, chicken nuggets and chips while the pasta bake and salmon were great for vegetarian options. My husband didn't want a large meal and was able to have a panini and salad. I had the roast with three large slices of pork with apple sauce, Yorkshire pudding, lovely roast potatoes and fresh vegetables. Everything was hot and freshly cooked. After lunch we had a great time sledging in the grounds followed by a session in the soft play area. A fantastic place to meet up with all the family.

Was staying the weekend in Aviemore, not here thankfully, but on walking up to the resort, saw a huge billboard, advertising the Atrium Restaurant, which were doing a special offer, on a 'Traditional Roast Carvery'. Brilliant, we thought, as the offer was buy one and get the other one free. On the sign there was a picture of a huge roast joint of beef or pork, with fluffy yorkshire puddings at the side. Great, we thought, so popped into the restaurant and confirmed with the supervisor, that this was indeed the deal, and it would be available on Sunday, and told us there was no need to book. Excellent, we said, and went away, looking forward to this feast. Sunday morning, had a wander around this lovely area, skipping a large breakfast, in anticipation of our 'Traditional Roast Carvery'. As this offer was only available from 12pm till 12.30pm, we arrived at 11.45am and thought we would have a drink in the bar. The barmaid said 'will be back in a minute', and that was the very last we saw of her!!! While my husband was standing at an empty bar, I had a look at the drinks list, to see what wine was available, Well, I was so glad I did, as the prices were RIDICULOUS !! A glass of rose' was between £7.50 and £8.00 ! WHAT!!!!and a can of coke was £2.85. So, as there was no-one there anyway, thought we might skip this. The 'CARVERY' opened at 12.00pm and we went up to the counter, wondering where it was??? The chef appeared from through the back, with a big carving knife, still confused, we asked him what there was?? 'This is it' he said, and pointed to a joint of BACON !!!!!!!! and a jug of gravy?? and some mashed potato, roast potato and carrots and red cabbage, completely free of garnish or indeed flavour !! I pointed out that I had bacon for breakfast and didnt want it again, so he said, well you can have that then, and pointed to a dish of lasagne, curried vegetables or sweet and sour something !! I would have walked out at this point, but my husband was starving, so went along with it, and had the lasagne and roast potato, Dry and tastless, as expected. My husand went for the bacon, also tastless along with everything on his plate. He THEN asked me why I hadnt walked out !!! I complained to the supervisor, who didnt really care, as she was busy putting our money in her till. !!! I dont know in what country this is a 'Traditional Roast' but it certainly isnt Scotland, as we have a sunday roast every week and I have never had BACON !!! The fact that there was only 3 couples having lunch sort of explained a lot. The big advertising board at the bottom of the road, was a total mis-representation of what was ACTUALLY on offer. We were furious, as we could have gone to a proper restaurant in the village, and had an ACTUAL roast dinner cooked properly. There are many lovely places to eat in Aviemore, but this is NOT one of them. Sort of spoiled our weekend away, as we spent a long time looking forward to a Sunday roast that we havnt had to cook ourselves. It is about time the Macdonald Resort got a grip, and stopped treating their customers with the indifference that they do, they are not THAT exclusive, like they think they are, people can go elsewhere, and we certainly will in future !!!

I purchased a platinum card for a day at this resort for myself, wife & 2 grandchildren. I was hinted not to leave from the pool to late as we wished to see a movie which started at 2-30 and we were having lunch in between. We enjoyed the pool in the morning and were looking forward to our meal. The place was in chaos with no staff manning the carvery, the manager was clearing tables, there was no advice as to what was available to eat. Bar staff were nowhere either. Several customers were upset at the delays and lack of food and the subsequent time to deliver it. The managers, manager came in and looked around and talked to the manager. None of the staff or managers' asked if any customers were enjoying the dining experience. A lack of good staff training is evident around the resort as there were several occasions when an answer had to be sought from another person. Use the "Steak House" restaurant or "The Cairngorm Hotel as the staff there are more professional.

I am very surprised by the low overall rating. I ate here two nights in a row - main, dessert and cocktail - as it was included in my accommodation package. The cocktails were nice, and the food and dessert tasty, and it meets my expectations for the restaurant attached to a three star hotel.
