Ash in Highland

I am very surprised by the low overall rating. I ate here two nights in a row - main, dessert and cocktail - as it was included in my accommodation package. The cocktails were nice, and the food and dessert tasty, and it meets my expectations for the restaurant attached to a three star hotel.

My husband and I ordered the Vegetable and Asparagus Pie, with a side mixed salad. The ‘pie’ was deconstructed - the pie crust was a cooked pastry bowl and the vegetable and asparagus came as a stew on the side. The asparagus was very overcooked and the peas were hard (like they had been dried and then undercooked). The lettuce leaves otherwise tasted metallic. There is no water for the table. The service was good but they refused to take cash because they ‘didn’t have change’ but when the cash draw opened they clearly had change / cash.

The food is horrible, if I could give a 0 star I would! Service is okay

Best creme brulee me and my husband have ever tasted! Main course was good too. Definitely worth a visit.

Fish and chips was awful. Peas were hard, fish didn’t taste fresh and batter was soggy and strange taste. For £22 I was expecting something decent

Grumpy, unprofessional manager/barman set the tone for overall poor service and experience. Do not go.

Had a very nice dinner which suited 3 of us including 1 vegetarian. Great choice & plenty of veggie options which is unusual. The food was really fresh & beautifully presented & good sized portions. Staff very helpful & attentive. Would definitely return next time in Inverness.

We ended up here as apart of our excursion and this was very disappointing. The upholstery is outdated and just feels dirty. The waitress messed our order up and they did nothing to fix it. The low rating is there for a reason. Next time we will check before relying on others.

Ate here with my sister today. She enjoyed her carbonara but veg in my Thai curry were quite hard but tasty otherwise.Downside was we weren't able to pay for our individual meals .. said they were "too busy"

Salmon salad appeared to be tinned. Beef pie - beef ok but the loose puff pastry on top disintegrated on eating. Peas horrible. We noticed 4 fellow customers left with much uneaten. We also departed with 1/2 plate untouched.

Great service (with the exception of not doing split bills). Excellent food well presented.

Felt rushed to order all our courses. Was looking forward to a chicken pie instead got chicken in a wine sauce with puff pastry put on top of it, this is not a pie and tastes nothing like a pie. After our sweet we given our bill without asking for it ,we felt we were being rushed out of the door. This was not a relaxing meal.

Unpleasant and rude staff. The initial treatment was so bad that we didn't even get to sit down. How is it possible to have people like this dealing with customers?

Terrible food, manager and vibe. Hands down the worse food and service I’ve had in Scotland during my trip. No one should eat here. Ever. The manage was rude and dismissive, the food was pitiful and the prices were insane. We wouldn’t eat our meals.

VERY RUDE MANGER. DO NOT EAT HERE. Food was average at best. I ordered a chicken mushroom pie and my wife ordered a vegetable pie, when the plates came out neither of them were pies at all! When we had eaten a few bites and decided we would just pay and leave the manager came over and tried to convince us that it was a “scrambled pie”. Thats not was on the menu and thats not what we ordered. By far this was the worst meal and service I have had in Scotland.

I have mixed feelings about this place. Never chosen it to eat, it was a part of a deal of the Royal Highland Hotel, 2 nights for 2 with 1 dinner for two. It worked out cheaper that 1 night for 1 person B&B basis. On the first night we came for a dinner, and the food is…, well I would say well below average. I am happy I didn’t had to pay for it, because the prices in the menu I found well above the average for that quality of the meal. Fried Dishes been soggy,full of oil, not edible looks like the oil wasn’t hot enough. There was 6 of us, we took quite a few dishes and all of them been just passable, positive side- no one had food poisoning. My personal opinion is to stay away from there. Location have huge potential, but owners don’t know how to do it- or maybe are just orientated for coach groups which are staying in next door hotel.

This restaurant has terrible service. The food is okay, but the poor service completely overshadows the food. Our experience was exactly as others have described it. The bartenders are rude ( we had the same experience with two different bartenders), the pints have a weird foam that doesn’t dissipate (what the heck?). We were staying at the hotel and went to the restaurant twice. Our first experience was for dinner. We asked for a larger table, and were ordered to sit at the small one. There were no additional drinks offered, no one checked to see if our meal was okay, there was no dessert or coffee offered after the meal. They plunked the food on the table and never looked back. The bill didn’t arrive. We eventually went to the bar and requested to pay. They took our money without so much as a thank you or a smile. The next evening we went to the bar area for a beer. We were told to “go sit in the hotel lobby to drink the beer”. It was an odd directive since the bar area of the restaurant was empty but we did as told. As we drank our drinks, without warning they quietly closed the restaurant leaving a number of people who were having a drink in the lobby, (as directed to) with no access to toilet facilities because bizarrely enough the hotel’s toilets next to the lobby were locked. The polite thing would have been to advise the patrons ahead of closing so people weren’t left stranded. Lucky for us we were staying at the hotel and could go to our room. Other people had no where to go. To Janice Smith, the person providing the canned responses from management, saying you will “look into it and rectify the situation” isnt having much of an impact on the service provided.

Ordered a pint of Caledonian best, the geezer behind the bar was rude and extremely unprofessional. The pint was poor , very poor! It legitimately looked like he had frothed from his own mouth over it. Totally gross!

Staff is on the move quickly. Friendliness still leaves a lot to be desired. Everything was very hectic rather than calm and serene. My main course ribeye steak was a flop. Tough and taste-free. A delicious herb butter for steak or a salad sauce - none! My partner's starter, potato sticks, were good. The sauces with it tasted good. My partner's Indian main course was also good. However, I would not visit this restaurant again. What is missing is the beautiful ambience and quality. You can eat better in the rustic pubs. We had a voucher from the hotel for two meals and a high-quality drink (beer or wine.)

What a great place in the hotel. We had lunch here and everything was fantastic. The food was large, we'll cooked, and the cheapest price in town. The value here is great. Thai green curry, salmon salad meal, each at £9 is great. Creme Brulee and coffee were a perfect end. Service was excellent as it has been our entire stay.

Lovely hotel restaurant. The staff were welcoming, my salad was well prepared and my cocktails were tasty. Ignore the low aggregate score, they appear to have been review bombed by people who had never even visited.

Trigger warning! Zero stars!! Don’t step foot in this establishment. I went in to get a coffee and some food before my train and I was told I could choose a seat. I went to the toilet and went to sit down but the same man who said I could choose a seat, changed his mind last min and said I couldn’t sit there. So I tried to sit down somewhere else but was stopped a second time. He demanded I have to order at the bar but I wanted to sit down and look at the menu. The man hounded me to order, stood blaring at me with malice while I looked at the menu giving me nasty looks and he made me feel extremely uncomfortable. So I said “I’m just going to think about it thankyou.” Then he says “yeah after you use the toilet” and sneered at me! Where do you get off talking to a woman this way and being so abusive? You are absolutely out of order. Is this how you treat potential customers? Where in the world did you get this kind of customer service training? There are a lot of nicer places in Inverness to use the toilet, your toilet stinks like sewage. Listen pal, it’s no Balmoral Lol I told him he was very rude and could have said more but I’m an educated well mannered lady. Well, we’ll just say I had to leave as he was beginning to shout at me! I’ll be filing a complaint and taking this further. Glad I didn’t spend my money in there. The customer service is horrendous don’t put yourself through it. Shame on you Ash management. Get better people working in there that don’t shout abuse at customers and try to intimidate women. This happened 20 march around 4:30pm so look into this. 👍

Absolutely terrible service. Bald guy (bar manager?) at the bar was staring at my wife and I the whole time. He was gabbing to his younger assistant who couldn’t be bothered to notice we were trying to get his attention to refill our drinks. Good yet very expensive food. Horrible service. Bar manager needs to not be creeping out guests and serving as a distraction to his waiter.

I was here a while ago. Very rare to see soor service on all levels. The building and hotel looks nice, Very unfriendly vibe from the staff, nor competent. Maybe working in a nice place has gone to their heads but that ain't how you work things. Ordered tea, they didn't understand I wanted something with it, cakes or scones... Ice cream was suggested. About 25 minutes later I got tired waiting so asked to cancel. I was told it's being made. Quality was yuck. Epic fail. Maybe if you stay in the hotel you get treated better since they ask you before you are seated if your staying in the hotel.

Didn’t stay long enough to eat. Restaurant manager was working the bar, he managed to be rude on 3 separate occasions then got my father in laws order wrong, and rudely told him off too. Shocking hospitality, it’s no wonder the restaurant was empty

Food was a delight. Well cooked, superb presentation, wonderful sauce on the Chicken Balmoral. Pleasant staff. Good service. Recommended!

Food here is good, not too fancy but not just basic either. The place is quite pleasant, but the service and price are a real let-down. We'd read reviews of the staff not understanding English well, and that was borne out. We asked for cocktails, one single and one sharer: we had to poke them to get them after we'd finished our starters, and they only brought two singles. Attempts to rectify this met with the language barrier: the wait staff couldn't quite understand the problem, though they were very willing to try and help. The speed of service was very good, but it felt disorganised. The bill was also pretty hefty, about 30% over what seemed reasonable. If you have money to burn and just want good food by the station then this is the place to go, but I won't be going back.

Was staying in hotel, staff were odd, trying to take away food before even finished! Hellishly overpriced and under par food, ordered a vegetable pie and came with some abomination of pastry that looked like a medium sized loaf of bread as the pie top that splintered as soon as cut the vegetables were not cooked and in what appeared to be done sort of congealed tomato soup as the sauce. Wine was ok but it was overpriced too, more like a £7 bottle from a low end supermarket not what they were charging! At the end of the day it’s an ok hotel to stay in but are we reaching for the stars if they lowered their prices considerably and stopped doing food they clearly cannot do and stuck to ‘basics’ might be more of a good fit!

We wanted an early meal before taking the sleeper train to London and this was convenient: food choice was at best "traditional" but the quality was below mediocre. I chose North Sea Haddock (really!?) and chips to be safe: nothing good to say about it. More than £80 for 2 including a very ordinary screw top Pinot Grigio: we have better ways of spending our money! Our expectations were not particularly high but we even failed to meet these

Came here for dinner as guests in the hotel. We’ve never had a more uncomfortable dining experience. First, the manager was extremely rude and when we asked for a table for two he asked “do you have a booking?” And when I said no, he snapped, “you have to book to eat here,” but proceeded to seat us anyway. I felt like we did something wrong from the start. Then the waiters came to take our orders two seconds after we sat down and before we even had a chance to look at the menus. My companion ordered a whiskey and I ordered a water, to which the waiters laughed and said “of course you want water, with ice right?,” implying that because I was American and looked young, I of course would want just water with ice. I requested no ice to which both of the waiters and the manager behind the bar laughed at me and whispered about me while getting our drinks. It was very rude and uncomfortable. Our food came out within minutes (likely because it had been sitting in the back in a warming pan all afternoon rather than cooked fresh). The food was fine but definitely not worth the price. The waiters and manager continued to creepily leer at us throughout the meal. Overall, I have never seen a wait staff so confused about how to wait tables and interact with people. They spoke very little English and I wasn’t sure they had ever waited a table before in their lives. It was an uncomfortable experience overall and I will not be returning. We also discovered that the same wait staff worked the breakfast service in the hotel, so we decided to eat out instead.

Tuvimos una buena experiencia en ambas visitas. El hombre de traje no se comunica con mucho tacto en inglés, pero los garzones son muy amables. No es un lugar barato, pero los platos son contundentes! Especialmente el sirloin. Y muy recomendado el salmón también.

Åt en god och prisvärd lunch i skön atmosfär. Soft musik, mjuka mattor, korrekt personal. En vilsam stund på väg till tåget.

Lovely steak pie with huge puff pastry topping, staff were very pleasant, we were there after the lunchtime rush so it was quiet.

The Chicken Balmoral was not good, no taste and weird texture of something frozen then not heated properly. Cannot recommend. The staff was nice though.

Si je pouvais mettre 0 je le ferais. Service horrible, nourriture abominable, une honte !!!! Des légumes bouillis sans saveur, des crevettes surgelés. Une bouteille de prosecco posé sur la table et aucun service... Et le summum, la facture salée, 60€ pour 2 plats. A ce prix là mieux vaut aller chez macdo, on y mange mieux.

Wir sind rundherum zufrieden. Das Personal war freundlich und zuvorkommend und das Essen (Haggis, Beeps & Tatties und Glenmorangie Chicken) hat uns sehr gut geschmeckt. Der Raum ist modern und ansprechend eingerichtet, es war lediglich ein wenig kühl. Dank Gutschein vom Hotel waren lediglich die Getränke zu zahlen. Ohne Gutschein wäre es mir für das angebotene Essen wohl auch zu teuer gewesen. Die sehr schlechten Bewertungen hier kann ich nicht nachvollziehen.

Everywhere else was busy but this place was quiet. It's usually a warning but we had a wee hungry child. The service was excellent, high chair and a table for 6 provided. The delicious food was served promptly by a pleasant and helpful waiter. For a proper restaurant, not fast food, prices were reasonable. I can't understand why the reviews are not good. Give it a try. It's lovely with an extremely good range of menu options. The Thai green curry and haggis, tatties and neeps were excellent

Just ducked into this establishment during a heavy rain storm and without checking the previous reviews for this place. That was our mistake. I don't often post poor reviews...but considering what we experienced in our short stay, I will this time. Basically, the other reviews are correct. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. The "gentleman" in the suit (owner or manager - I hope not) who took our order, however, started off by complaining that the waitress should never have seated us because lunch was over. There was no sign that said so...and we looked before coming inside. He was short and curt, we felt rushed as we ordered, and when we finished ordering, he made a point of saying, "No dessert"...not as a question, but as a statement. The food was actually pretty good (hence the two-star review, not one), but we felt rushed to finish. If the OWNER or the HOTEL MANAGEMENT to which this restaurant is attached to is reading this, the best thing you can do is put the WAITRESSES in charge of the whole establishment. Once this happens, I think you'll find the reviews will start to improve.

We ordered something to drink whilst staying at the attached Royal Highland hotel and it was just terrible. The waiter behind the bar was incredibly rude. There are 2 sides at the bar but you could order only on one side. Fair enough, but he clearly saw us on the wrong side. Instead of saying something he just ignored us. Then when we realized only the other side was open, he just didn't have the vibe, like at all. Also, the prices of the beers are rather high and more importantly, they don't match the menu...

Right by the train station, you'll have reasonably priced elegance. Very friendly staff.

The man behind the bar in the suit was incredibly rude and thought it funny to hand me the menu after i asked for it twice and then ‘play’ with me by taking it away before i could take it from him. I walked out and said ‘no thanks’ and as i did he creepily watched me walk out. Maybe because I’m Asian, or maybe not but this horrible staffer is a disgrace to all bar staff on earth.

Please go eat somewhere else! Came in spontaneously after a long trip, nothing against the people who served us but oh well the prices almost £5 for a lemonade?!? Just a pub food at ridiculous prices! And the food had a very strange and sickening taste still feel sick please don't waste your money.

Unglaublich elegante und köstliche Variante von Haggis, Neeps and Tatties!!! Das Beste was ich in Schottland gegessen habe. Bei Ash gilt es als Vorspeise aber ich war wirklich drauf und dran es einfach 2-3 mal zu bestellen, als Hauptspeise! 🤭 Stattdessen gab es noch den Scotch Beef and Cheese Burger und für meinen Mann Chicken Balmoral (mit haggis und der leckeren Soße 🤩). Wirklich köstlich und für uns eins der unvergesslichen Erlebnisse in Inverness. Empfehlung hoch zehn!

No atmosphere, unhelpful service , felt like a conveyor belt experience. Drinks silly expensive. Food was OK. We leave near Inverness and are regular visitors to get lunch, but won't go back there again.

Ok, my meal was lovely but my husband wanted a well done burger and was told a flat ‘NO’. Kind of felt rude. The atmosphere was nothing special.

Comme je l'ai lu dans un autre avis, effectivement on dirait que le service est un gag, avec des personnages tout droit sortis d'un film de Tim Burton peut-être ? J'ai cherché la caméra cachée lol! Nourriture correcte mais pas de quoi casser 3 pattes à un canard (pauvre canard !).... on a presque dû se carapater parce qu'il était trop tard de toute façon pour demander un dessert qui ne nous faisait de toute façon pas envie au vu de la prestation.... pour une dernière soirée en Écosse et après plusieurs soirées à devoir faire des queues interminables pour espérer manger dans un restaurant à portree, vraiment quelle déception !

Excellent service, food, and atmosphere. We had a voucher from our hotel reservation for two courses, and were able to get most everything on the menu! Well worth your time checking out.

Food was oke, but too bad they overcharged us for 4 dubble espressos when we had just two. Found out too late ... so check the bill before you pay it

Great meal, very friendly maitre d. We where seated immediately and offered drinks that came in minutes, we are staying in the hotel on a dinner included for the Friday night so just a couple of items where extra but the rest is included. A very friendly guy from Hull took our order and the food arrived promptly and was piping hot and delicious. It is a little pricey if paying for a meal, starters around £10, mains around £20 for pie and chips and dessert £9. Over all nice hotel restaurant

The manager Ismael was terrible at his job. I was given a complimentary dinner when I booked 3 rooms st The Royal Highland Hotel. However after leaving, he accused me of not settling the bill. After realising he made a mistake, he reluctantly made an apology while also telling me, I should have told him about this complimentary dinner in the first place. After realising once again it was his staff that was at fault, he went on to say he was a great manager and this has never happened to him before. Ismael is terrible at his job and we were also racially profiled. I would suggest skipping this restaurant altogether because of this utterly disrespectful Ismael, who claims to be the best manager on TripAdvisor but in reality is terrible at his job.

We were put off from eating here by the sour faced and pompous concierge. We might have just laughed him off had the prices been more reasonable but with our first round of two drinks coming in at £17 and a meal of fish and chips costing £20, we decided to cut our losses and look elsewhere for and evening meal. Nevertheless, an hour or so later as we were marshalling our luggage in the Caledonian Sleeper Club lounge, one of us noticed that we had lost a Fitbit. She retraced her steps and discovered that it had been found and stored in lost property at the Ash, which by then was completely full of diners. All of them appeared to be enjoying excellent cuisine.

Restaurant staff were rude, unaccommodating and dismissive. Prices were average. We won't be going back because of staff attitude alone Didn't get to eat as we were told to book even though there were tables clearly available

The waiting staff were incredibly pushy and rude throughout the entire experience, especially the main staff member wearing a suit jacket. The food was passable at best and wasn't a good portion size. The whole experience overall was rough and I wouldn't recommend it to someone that had killed my sainted mother, pass this restaurant off as a small and overall awful experience that you can avoid entirely.

Cheap pub food, but at restaurant prices. I was also served a beer that smelt and tasted off / weird - that said they did change that without any issue. All in all I wouldn't go back, many better places.

Personeel doet echt wel zijn best denk ik, en is vriendelijk. Eten was helaas niet echt goed, ik had een pie besteld maar dit was niet echt een pie te noemen, saus met kip en champignon met een los deeg erbij. Voorgerecht was wel lekker.

We went in for lunch between Christmas and New year. I had the salmon salad my wife had a cheese and pickle toasted sandwich. The salmon salad was disappointing, to be fair there was a decent portion of salmon but the salad was a bag of florette with a couple of cherry tomatoes, a blob of olive tapanade sat atop the salmon, no other dressing. My wife's cheese and pickle toasted sandwich arrived as a cheese and onion toasted sandwich so went back to be changed. I ordered orange squash with soda but got fresh orange and lemonade. I tried to order an orange squash and soda again but it never arrived. Overall I thought it was a bit expensive for the quality, soft drinks were really over priced and the service was quite poor.

I would have enjoyed my meal at this restaurant a lot more if the staff didn't smell of cigarette smoke. 🤢🤢

Arrived to ask to eat, although we hadn't booked .Reception was frosty and unfriendly. Rushing to take order not long after sitting down . Cutlery was dirty. Fish and chips was a measly portion, and not fresh. Staff obviously were more interested in hotel guests than regular customers. Very expensive for what we got. Won't be back .

The food was good. The menu was affordable. The wait time was lengthy and our water never came back. We had to go to the bar to pay and they were upset with us for seeking out someone to get some service. Wasted over an hour and a half trying to leave and pay.

They didn't want to give us a table, told us should have made a reservation beforehand. nearly no-one there, and looked like they were waiting a long time for their food to be served. After seeing the reviews I'm glad I didn't spend my evening there.

Bad food. Bad service. Bad staff. I understand why you get a "free" dinnercard when booking a room at the hotel, noone would ever pay for this willingly. Do yourself a favor, eat at another restaurant.

Slow service from the start, tasteless and over priced food ! Wouldn’t recommend to the homeless man sat outside

This was disappointing. After a long day of traveling we just wanted some good Scottish food. We were absolutely DISAPPOINTED. We were first greeted by a rude waiter who seemed confused that we wanted to eat. There were 4 women! We wanted to leave but gave it a chance anyway. Next waiter was extremely rude as well and seemed annoyed by our presence. We were still hesitant but ordered anyway. Literally a fee seconds after we order one lady needed to change the meal because what she had order was incorrect. They REFUSED! THE MEAL: The food came out and we were greeted with frozen peas, flavorless fish, and steak pie (without the pie). The creme brule was filled with berries & runny (not a normal filling.) This meal could have been $10/pounds and it would have been too much. There was one nice gentlemen but too little too late. Please do not waste you money or time here. You will be disappointed!

Food was great but took awhile to get served.

Zum Mittagessen kann man hier gut hingehen. Die Preise sind vernünftig und die Gerichte schmecken sehr gut. Im Haggis fehlt ein bisschen Pfeffer, aber den kann man ja nachträglich dazu geben.

The service was fantastic with a nice drink selection and mellow atmosphere. The Mushroom Carbonara was quite good as well. The Ribye steak was cooked just right at medium rare as requested however, the steak itself had very little flavor and the onion rings were mushy and bland. Great restaurant but I would not recommend the steak.

They changed the age for beer from 18 to 21 when i was ordering my second beer so i was not allowed

Nous avons mangé dans le cadre d’une promotion hôtel + repas. C’était mangeable mais pas plus. A la carte, le rapport qualité / prix est proche de zéro. Service inégal. Un moment on pensait que c’était un gag, mais non ! Juste un service «  décalé ».

We ate here as part of our room deal when staying at the hotel. We had two courses included with the room but was was pleased to see there was an option to upgrade for specialty menu items. The restaurant is really modern, clean and we were welcomed very promptly on arrival. It was nice to see all the staff formally dressed and all looked really smart. Gave the place a nice traditional feel which we felt was in keeping with the hotel. Waiters were very polite and gave plenty of time but not too much to review the menus before taking our order. Menu isn’t huge but a nice range of choices available. We had chicken pakora and potato skins as our starters, both of which were absolutely delicious. For our mains I upgraded for a sirloin steak with chips and husband had a chicken and mushroom pie. My steak was beautiful and cooked perfectly. The pie was huge and again tasted great. Crispy pasty top and deep filled with no scrimping on the portion sizes. We can’t fault the meal here, we really enjoyed it and will definitely be going back.

Everyone that works here is confused. Tried to take my menu away when I hadn’t ordered yet. Couldn’t make a hot toddy, gave me packets of sugar on the side instead of honey. Didn’t under the request of salad instead of fries or onion rings… and the food itself was very poor quality.

Poor. Waited half an hour just to get drinks, and only as we waved a waiter over. 4 young staff hanging around without a clue. We asked to order food and they had to get one of the older staff to do it. We asked one of the young girls to get food and she disappeared and never came back. Burger with bacon and blue cheese was tasty enough to be fair. A bit haphazard but food was OK. A bit of training wouldn't go a miss.

We had the Glenmorangie Chicken and the Salmon Fillet. Both taste pretty good. We came with Taste Card so it was 2 for 1 but if I were to pay £20-22 a dish I think that's too much. The managers seem very slow and checked my Taste Card several times. The waitress was very attentive and friendly.

Ordered the chicken balmoral and it was clearly microwaved, the whiskey sauce although ok didn’t taste of whiskey. Wouldn’t recommend

I loved the dessert and the decorations of the restaurant. I gave it 4 as the waiter wasn’t nice when I entered the password of my card wrong😏
