Limited choice and choices quite expensive for what you got. Party included a lady with mobility issues as well as a wheelchair user. When we arrived, despite seeing 3 empty tables we were told no tables available on inside and offered tables outside in high winds. We came back three times and on 3rd time it started raining. At that point the staff offered an inside table. One staff member was quite kind but we seemed an inconvenience to the others. Went to the shop and staff there very helpful and friendly. So mixed experiences. On the plus side, although rather pricey, bread rolls were fresh daily and so was the food. Quite a strong smell coming from butchery, which was connected to the Sparrow Cafe. Lady serving food was very cheery and should be on reception. Would I come again? Probably not for the food but perhaps for the bird of prey centre.

Plot was to charge the ev and eat. Chargers were full and way off finishing but as it was a trial run and had enough to get home we went to the cafe anyway. Wow, great food and great service. The pork belly and black pudding rosti was fab as was the open steak sandwich. Think this will be a regular stop off to the Midlands, regardless of needing a charge

My partner and I popped in as we fancied somewhere nice for lunch while we were visiting the outskirts of Shrewsbury. I saw the Battlefield recommend on Google so thought we would give it a try. We were pleasantly surprised by the decor and the amazing homemade cakes beautifully presented as you walk in. The lady on the door asked to seat us but as they were so busy the only available seat was by the door. She seemed concerned with us having this seat (we have a small baby) so she asks if she can seat us somewhere further in the restaurant, out of the door draught, once a table becomes available. We agreed and once one did, she kindly helped us carry our belongings over. We were delighted with the food, I had the steak and ale pie and my partner had the burger. Both of us really enjoyed our meals, they were full of flavour and made with quality ingredients. The waitress asked if she could get us any cakes but unfortunately I am having to go dairy free (baby has a cows milk allergy) I wasn’t able to have any of the fresh cakes. She could see that I was a bit disappointed so she asked if she could see if see if the farm shop had anything suitable - which they did. I was really surprised with how helpful she was as she really went above and beyond to make sure we were catered for. Overall I highly recommend visiting and we will definitely be back when we are in the area! Thank you!

Our lunch at Sparrows was one of those happy accidents resulting from an un-planned visit to the farm shop, but fore-warned is fore-armed so (at peak times) get your name on the list for a table first, and then browse the shop whilst waiting. But the wait is worthwhile. The standard menu is good, wholesome food prepared on site - and don't miss out on the daily specials. But you may have to wait a while for your order to arrive. And it is worth waiting for - although standards can occasionally drop a bit when it gets very busy. My spiced, slow-cooked lamb panini (although really tasty and well filled) was somewhat spoilt by three large chunks of inedible gristle. The "Oh dear" response from the waitress when I pointed this out to her was rather less than expected or appropriate,But it didn't put us off trying to return a couple of weeks later. Unfortunately flooded roads made this impossible, but we will try again if we are back in the area. Prices are reasonable with wine (limited to a "house" red, white and rose) available at under £14 a bottle.

My husband enjoyed his Sunday roast and our daughter her spaghetti bolognaise. Sadly there was no vegetarian roast. I opted for a tart and was disappointed when it arrived as it was a quiche. The food was ok but not as nice as others had described. As we were paying, a waiter with a beard walked behind us laden with plates and narrowly missed my 4 year old daughter who was standing next to me (not playing). When he saw her he made a big song and dance about it and shouted ‘Jeez’ at the top of his voice. No apology. If you’re going to be carrying heavy, hot food, make sure you can see a path ahead.

Often come here for the shop. Lovely eggs, sausages, meat etc. Have previously used Sparrows cafe for a cup of tea and cake in pleasant surroundings. Visited with family this Sunday, for breakfast. 2 of us had the breakfast option and my granddaughter, the kids breakfast. I opted for the mushroom s on toast.Well I definitely had food envy. The breakfast looked delicious, mainly due to the excellent produce. I had a megre portion of mushrooms on a small slither of sourdough toast and poached egg, covered in a forest of incredibly tough peashoots and a large slither of black plastic. Certainly not worth the £5.50 costThe kids breakfast was missing the bacon. I think I will limit myself to coffee and cake from now on, although, as already mentioned in other reviews, avoid the scones, they tend to be dry and tasteless

Called in here for a light lunch on Sunday around 3pm - it was still heaving with people having Sunday dinners. Ordered soup, cake and tea. The tea and cake arrived quickly - the soup some 20 minutes later so nearly ended up eating cake then soup to save time. I think it suffers from trying to do too much - too wide a menu and when busy all a bit confusing and disjointed service. The soup and cake were very nice (not together obviously) but seriously disappointed with the tea - one and half very small cups per person in a pot for 2 people. Lovely building though and interesting shop & deli.

I hear about the large portions on other reviews but this wasn’t this case when we visited. Two £8.25 fish and chips came out and they were tiny. They were actually served on a side plate. We were told it was the printer’s fault and the menu should have read ‘mini’ fish and chips. No apology or offer to fix it. We had two courses and left hungry. The head waitress just said that the portions can be small sometimes and big other times. Doesn’t really help us does it?! No concession on the meal price or offer of anything else. We told them we were leaving hungry and we just got a shrug. This cafe is not what it used to be. Very disappointing. BTW We’re two small females. We don’t exactly overeat and it wasn’t enough for us.

Have to say that we've been here a few times now and every time the food has been superb! Large portions and quality ingredients. It also seems that there's been a change to the way we were sat down too, which meant service was much faster than before and there was always a member of staff nearby willing to help. The only gripe I have is that the coleslaw is very heavy! It's far too thick for my personal taste, but that's nit picking. Will return!

Excellent Sunday lunch. Very busy, but despite this the service was quick and cheerful and food arrived within 10 mins of the waitress taking our order. Roast beef done to perfection and plenty of it, accompanied by plenty of properly cooked veg including a very good cauliflower cheese and the biggest Yorkshires this side of the Pennines. Our 16 year old son, who like most teenage boys, can eat for his country, ordered the burger and only just managed to finish it before declining a pudding as he was too full. No mean feat! 3 meals including drinks for £36.00.As you'd expect for a farm enterprise, they are very committed to local sourcing and reducing food miles, so you can eat well, safe in the knowledge that you're doing your bit for the planet whilst supporting a local independent business.

I enjoyed a lovely Sunday meal with friends after a social dog walk around Battelfield. We just managed to catch the breakfast menu before the lunchtime changeover. I had smoked salmon with scrambled eggs and two slices of granary toast and butter (a huge portion). My friends had mushrooms on toast. We all enjoyed our savouries. My dessert of choice was a fruit crumble with custard ... again a large portion and very yummy. My friends had cold desserts which thye alos enjoyed. The chai tea I chose was a beautiful flavour. I was so full that I did the walk round the Battlefield once more! What a lovely way to spend a Sunday. I'll do it again. I would also like to mention the staff who were very friendly and helpful. Arriving a few minutes after opening we ordered breakfasts. The food was served quite quickly. The food however looked dry and over cooked . The sausage was rather dark . The bacon hard and rather tough to chew. Fried egg and beans however were fine. Mushrooms were dried out and rather shrivled. The black pudding was strangely hard on one side. The fried potatoes were almost black. The toast was hard and dry and not at all nice. Two members of staff asked how the breakfast was and I answered honestly to both about how bad it was, neither made any attempts to remedy the situation. I won't ever return here as their high price is only justified for freshly cooked premium produce . I cannot recommend this place in any way.

I’ve been to this restaurant many times before so hoping this morning was just a blip. I ordered a sausage breakfast roll with tomato relish which has previously been delicious. Sadly although the sausages were as lovely as ever the bread roll was small and tasted stale. The tomato relish was watery and tasted bitter. My friend had eggs benedict which tasted fine but were only lukewarm. The same applies to the coffee. No one asked us if the food was okay and whilst the staff were mostly friendly enough the room was cold. Such a shame if standards have slipped.

We visited the cafe at Battlefield after a recommendation from a friend. We arrived and initially were a little confused whether to wait or sit down and the lady making drinks ignored us, but a waitress eventually pointed at a table upstairs and explained where to sit and that someone would take our order. The menu had a great variety to choose from and we both decided to go for one of the jacket potatos. When the waiter arrived he was great, very friendly and a wonderful smile. He took our food and drink order and it didn't take too long to arrive. The quality of food was very good and almost justified the high prices, however it was still a touch on the pricey side for my liking. Once we had eaten we both agreed that the cakes sounded lovely and decided that we'd have a second drink and cake. Unfortunately we didn't realise how long we'd have to wait to see a member of staff again. We waited half an hour and not one member of staff came upstairs, had we known you pay as you leave we would have left but we didn't think we could as we were waiting for somebody to at least bring the bill. Eventually a waitress arrived and we still ordered cake, although we were very disappointes by the cakes. The strawberry and cream cake sounded like a fresh cream cake with strawberries, but it was more of a sponge with plain icing and half a strawberry on top, and the coffee and walnut marble cake was not marbled, was dry, and was more of a coffee hint flavoured sponge with walnuts on top. Luckily the main meal and service from the man who took our orders made up for the minor problems and I would visit again. Hopefully next time there will be staff available upstairs and the cake descriptions will be more accurate.

Toda la comida que vimos que se trajo parecía muy buena, estamos muy tentado a aventurarse volver pero sólo aquí por unos días, así que no tengo el tiempo. Visited here a couple of days ago, the farm shop was lovely full of locally grown produce and home made delicious foods. The cafe is very light an airy with overly views from upstairs. The food was delicious, very fresh and large portions. Would definitely recommend a visit here

we have visited on a number of occasions, ranging from Sunday Lunch to coffee & cake. we have never been disappointed. The local cooked meats are of a very high quality - steak pie is amazing. It can get very busy & noisy, but staff are helpful & accommodating. Great walks, excellent farm shop & visitor centre.Well worth a visit.

Decided on the spur of the moment to follow the brown sign and found ourselves driving up a wide concreted farm drive. There was ample parking and the theme of the place was immediately obvious .. Archers dressed in mediaeval costume were teaching visitors to shoot at targets. The farmyard contained a small but interesting museum of mediaeval artefacts both discovered locally and more general in nature. A limited but very high quality mainly food shop formed the next side of the yard. The restaurant was next. Bright clean and airy, it was a converted barn. The menu looked good and the vegetarian choices were pleasantly different. It was about half full which might have been a factor but the service was quick and efficient. The food was good. The only drawback was that a scone that we ordered was so dry as to be unswallowable and its replacement was as bad. The staff was friendly and an adjustment to the bill was quickly arranged. The last side of the yard included a small shop selling wooden items of moderate interest. In summary, worth popping in if you are passing but probably not worth making a long trip solely to this destination.

This is one of our family favourite places to eat out especially for Sunday Lunch. The cafe's menu has a good wide selection which can cater for vegetarians, pescatarians and meat lovers alike. All have been satisfied with their meals which is a rarity these days, as there is usually someone that disappoint with their food. The staff are very friendly & efficient. So much so on our last visit the meal arrived before our drinks. We have always found the meat on the roast dinners to be succulent and juicy everytime & this must be the benefit of being next to a farmshop. Only one slight grumble is that sometimed the side vegetables with the roast dinners can be more on the crunchy side of al dente & are just a couple more minutes away from perfection just like the main. So if I could this really would be 4.5 out of 5.

I found the breakfast it's self pretty much spot on only sticking point was rock hard butter on slightly cooled toast hard to spread bother than that I couldn't fault the food the service however as a chef myself who was grabbing a quick bite to eat before a 12 hour shift I turned up in a hoodie and fealt looked down upon by a very blunt waitress who was perfectly pleasant to the lady and gentlemen behind me yet I didn't seem to get the same quality of service made me feel unwanted there and unsure weather id return I I'll try again soon and see if it's any different next time Footnote I fealt one small blip didn't deserve a bad review hence the 4 the food was spot on after all

We weren't expecting our guests so we went out for lunch. Sparrows did themselves proud. We all ordered the "hunters board" which is a delightful selection of cold meats, cheese, scotch egg, pork pie and salad. Everything was of the highest standard, such tasty quality food made from locally sourced produce, just perfect. Washed down with tea and coffee, served by lovely ladies. Thank you all.

Love the fact this place is practically on my doorstep, always a firm favourite in our family for a spot of light lunch or a cheeky cake with a cup of tea. Love the fact that its all locally made and produced, food is always good, lots of interesting cakes and gluten free options available. Only down side is that it can get very busy and noisy.

It was a last minute decision to call here for lunch and we were very glad we did. It was busy but helpful staff drew two recently vacated tables together to suit our foursome. Our choices were one pea and stilton rissotto, two game puddings and one "burger of the week". This was very good food, nothing left and the chips were homemade as well as everything else!

There was a waiting list for a table but our turn came round fairly quickly. The waitress gave the table a cursory wipe and took our order. The food portions were very generous. The sample board of local meats, pork pie, cheeses, chutneys, pickles and scotch egg was very filling. The beef pie deeply filled and served with home made chips. Unfortunately the roasted vegetables were pale, greasy and consisted of swede and turnip; not very appetising. Overall a nice meal and good value.

Had lunch and a coffee here. Vegetarian choice was pleasantly different and the menu generally had some interesting choices but could make a lot more of local vegetables instead of just meat. This isn't a restaurant so don't expect cuisine, but I think it is definitely better than a cafe. The food was enjoyable but would have looked a lot better on a plate instead of a board. Like some places insist serving food on a roof slate. Some bonkers 'celebrity' chef idea I suppose.Despite the '5 scores on the doors' for food hygiene, I do wonder how they clean the boards. Do they use separate ones for meat and vegetarian dishes? It was very busy, which is a good sign, so if you want a quiet meal, avoid peak times.Breakfast served until 12.00.Everywhere was very clean with some interesting 'factoids' written on the walls.Parking is good but only just adequate when busy.Attached is the 1403 Battle of Shrewsbury [Henry IV, part I] exhibition as the farm now stands on the old battlefield. Well worth a visit in its own right.

You are able to adjust items on menu. Cakes are gorgeous, on a warmer day you can sit outside and let the world go by. I revommend this place to everyone. Suitable for wheelchair users. When finished your lovely food pop into the farm shop. Or a walk around the falconry.

A late Sunday lunchtime visit with tradition Sunday roast on my mind! A nice table was quickly found in the basic but adequate dining area. My starter was the very enjoyable Smoked Salmon which was very promptly served. There was a fairly long wait for the main course of Battlefield roast beef but it was well worth the wait and I would highly recommend the beef which appears to be their speciality.

I had roast turkey dinner, and asked to swap potatoes for extra veg, to keep the carbs down. This request was handled with very good grace, but the extra veg failed to appear, so we had to chase for them. Sadly, they were overcooked and drying out, and clearly precooked and microwaved. Our plates weren't cleared for over half an hour, until I asked for them to be taken, which wasn't great, but the pudding was incredible, and totally made us forgive the not-so-great service, and the decaf cappuccino was yum. My advice is to go for coffee and pud, but forget the rest.

Make sure the waitress / waiters know you have arrived and sat down at a table or you can get overlooked. Its nice to sit outside in the warm weather and eat alfresco.

We booked a table for eight on a Sunday lunchtime recently. 2 had lamb dinners, one had beef dinner, two child meals (sausage and fish fingers), haddock fish cakes, soup with bread, and pate with gluten free roll. All was as described, we asked for the gravy to be served separately for the Sunday dinners and this was done. The veg was lovely and fresh and not overcooked. The child meals were good quality sausage and homemade fish fingers. Would have been nice to have 2 rolls with the pate as one was not really enough. Good choice of soft drinks, nice on a warm day. The only dessert tried was chocolate brownie with vanilla ice-cream and it was delicious, very generous portion too. We also visited the owl and hawk centre, £12.50 for a family ticket. Luckily, archery was available to try, think it was £2 for 6 arrows. There was also battle re-enactments in the afternoon to watch, all in all a great family day. This is not a cheap place to eat but the food is good quality so well worth it.

We visited the farm shop cafe on 21 July just for a quick afternoon tea and cake. The cakes are fab - no question, but I have to say the service could be better. I found myself having to politely nudge one of the staff that my tea and cake were sitting on the counter 'ready to go' (and had been for a while). I had watched 3 or 4 staff walk past without noticing to pick it up and deliver to the table - I was drooling! It was quite comical really. The staff member who I troubled seemed rather put out.Very easy to improve things I would say with a smile and a bit of courtesy for good measure to customers - cost nothing for that.

Visited on a Monday lunchtime and it was very busy. Maybe this is why service was slow. The waitress seemed a bit stressed and when she eventually took our order for a sausage and caramelised onion roll she offered it on granary bread but when it came it was on a wholemeal roll as described on the menu. Whilst the bread was nice It was overall disappointing especially as it cost £6.25. The roll was small and only had two sausages. Half the roll had been "shown" the butter knife but the other half was dry. The sausages had obviously been cooked a long time before and reheated as they were hard and dry. The plate was then filled up with a massive amount of unwanted salad garnish and a dollop of coleslaw which then overpowered the very small amount of caramelised onion in the roll.Teapot only allowed for 1.5 cups of tea and milk was in an espresso cup as they had run out of jugs! Not easy to pour. My husbands black coffee was fine! Maybe better to just have a coffee here after looking around the well stocked farm shop.

Four of us went for Sunday lunch......Our drinks order & meal were ordered about 10 minutes after arriving, but then we had a another 10 minutes or so for our drinks to come! 3 bottled soft drinks & 1 cup of tea.! The 3 lamb meals were extremely good when they came, though the veg portions were stingy, served in one small dish for all four of us,& no extra gravy. We did ask for mint sauce,& horseradish for the one beef dinner, both came in small jam jars, but with no spoons.?! The beef meal was started but too tough to eat, which was kindly replaced, but no veg came back with it, (as it was all taken away on the first plate, hardly touched),so,after a request,a portion of veg came for the beef dinner. The second portion that came wasn't any better,so we were not charged for this. After our main course,we waited& waited,& waited ! So, I took upon myself to go and ask at the till if we could order desserts! They came, minus the 'cream' as advertised on menu,so again, had to go & find someone! The food was ok,but only come if you have bags of time to spare! There is definately no hurry here!

Visited this lovely country pub following recommendations from neighbours. The menu is small but full of home made dishes. As a group of 4 we enjoyed chicken and Stilton pie and vegetables, gammon, sweetcorn, chips and pineapple, chilli con carne and a really meaty pork chop, chips and peas. Really good home cooked food so much better than the normal pub grub. It also means the menu changes regularly. Sensibly priced making eating out a pleasure. Desserts just had to be tried. The whisky bread and butter pudding was suitably named and the apple crumble with custard was a winner too. The Sunday roast advertised at £9.30 will have to be tried another weekend. Delicious home cooked food is always so much better than bought in dishes. We praised the chef and June for a lovely warm welcome and a great meal.

I must echo the views of others. A really lovely restaurant spoiled by sparrows landing on the the table where cakes are being cut and on uncleared tables. Very unhygienic - there must be a way to stop them coming into the tearooms. Never encountered it anywhere else. Health and safety would have a field day!
