South Causey Inn in County Durham

We went to South Causey for afternoon tea, with friends, our dog and 6 month old baby. We have been to South Causey before and had a nice time. We love that it’s dog friendly too! The afternoon tea is great value for money! We got loads so obviously took some home! A down side to the afternoon tea is that it is brought out on mini picnic tables (which is cute) but the table we were given was not big enough for the four of us with cups and our afternoon tea. I feel we should have been given a bigger table seeing as their afternoon tea setup is so large. Also we were not offered a high chair for our baby (yes we could have asked for one), but not once were we asked if we wanted one and I would have expected one waiting at our table seeing as I informed them at booking that we would have a baby with us.

Always a lovely warm and welcoming visit. Food always delicious and the staff are so lovely can’t do enough for you. Special thanks to Bruno for looking after us x

This is the first time we've been here. First class service. Friendly professional staff. Lovely inside and outdoors. We dined in a pod but we walked through the restaurant area and it was very nice. Food and drinks were all lovely. We will definitely come back and bring family. Dog friendly too.

We visited on a very very cold wet blustery day 26 1 2025 we had a pod for our grandsons birthday l can not fault the young staff looking after us they were soaked to the skin but still had a smile on their face and nothing was to much trouble this with a lovely Sunday dinner cake and ice cream made our little boys day we have visited many times and will continue to l highly recommend a visit

Spent weekend in Old Stable hot tub suite with mum & sister. Had a fabulous time. Booked spa treatments in the spa, back massage the best ever. Hot tub was lovely.

Amazing service from wait staff and our outside pod was made as comfortable as it could be given it was 0 degrees outside. Food was good but we were slightly disappointed by the roast. The portions were huge, meat was tasty as were the Yorkshire puddings and gravy. However, the veg was quantity over quality - overdone yellow peas and hard carrots, boiled cauliflower with a drizzle of cheese sauce, mushy brocoli. It would've been much nicer, and in keeping with the quality of the rest of the meal, to have less vegetables cooked more with care. The setting is lovely and the pods are done out in a really nice way.

Portion sizes are massive!! Very fast orders & service + great food.

Amazing place to stay, great staff, venue and food

Recently come in with my full family and one of the family members is vegetarian. It said on the menu vegetarian. It was literally a Sunday dinner without the meat no nut roast. Nothing at all just vegetables and the Yorkshire pudding Was very underwhelming considering it said on the menu Vegan roast So we paid full price for a vegan or vegetarian Sunday dinner which consisted of vegetables mash and a Yorkshire pudding nothing to substitute the meat So blatantly does vegetables and a Yorkshire pudding We’ve been going there for years one of our favourite places even at the wedding there as a family stayed in the hotel This was very upsetting for us as one of our family members Felt very upset

Celebrating my 40th tonight at the South causey. Had a brilliant night. Food was great but must say the service was excellent from Charlie who was very attentive who made sure we had everything we needed. Thanks very much 😁

Wasn't our first choice today but came as other place was closed and been here before in past . Was busy not many car parking spaces and it was muddy .food we had was nice enough, the burger was a tad salty. Nice place and will be back and definitely recommend it .

Wonderful every Tuesday market and food after

Fantastic indoor market on Tuesdays. Extra special atmosphere at the Christmas Market. The Durham Suite is a lovely place to sit and have a coffee in among the market stalls after browsing or buying from the vendors. Can't praise it highly enough.

I was there for a works Christmas Do. I didn't stay, & it was dark, so I can only say, it was a very enjoyable evening, lovely staff & food delicious. Thank you!

Attended the Santa Sunday on 15-12-2024 with family and friends had an amazing afternoon the food was delicious, staff were very friendly and welcoming and it’s fair to say the magician and balloon artist were a big hit with the kids I would recommend this afternoon to anyone looking for a family day out absolutely fantastic

Joined a private party in one of the Pods. Interesting concept with lovely atmosphere and good service. Excellent quality food and drink. Didn't stay so cannot comment on hotel facilities.

We loved this venue - staff & service was brilliant - but the food... although it looked great & was served timely it wasn't really very good at all, which is a real shame.. 😞

Afternoon tea in the farmhouse. Absolute mountain of food for one, how on earth do people eat all this 😂, we left with almost one complete serving in boxes Great location and lovely room, even had Santa in attendance.

I went to the South Causey Inn for afternoon tea,which was amazing.I also stayed there for a wedding celebration.The room was lovely and cosy and had everything I needed.There were complimentary toiletries to use in the bathroom.I would certainly go back.

Went to the Christmas market, the decorations outside the south causeway inn were absolutely beautiful. Lovely free to enter market with some lovely stalls. Had a cheese scone and a lovely pot of tea for two, couldn't eat all the scones, so asked if we could take them home. Ended up having the other half of our scones with salad for our tea. Staff were so friendly and welcoming. Will definitely be visiting again very soon ❤️

We had the most wonderful stay to celebrate my husband's birthday. We were made to feel like royalty.

This is not the cheapest of places, but 10/10 for quality food and service staff were brilliant will be back soon.

My wife and I didn't stay at the South Causey Inn, we were there for a baby shower. The service was and the food was fabulous, I couldn't fault it in any way. The grounds are lovely to look at and well kept. I would definitely recommend this place, a bit pricey but you get what you pay for.

I hosted a yoga event at the south causey on a Friday night. About 20 mins into the class, a kareoke started in the next room and the music was horrendously loud that none of my class could concentrate or hear me teach. It ruined the whole atmosphere and needless to say I paid enough to rent the room! No warning at all about the kareoke being on that night. I have complained via email a month ago and received no response and not even an apology. Do not use the south causey to host events.

Absolutely beautiful hotel. The Forge was the nicest hotel room we've ever stayed in and the hot tub was divine. The staff were all so friendly and attentive and the pet experience was the best £15 I've ever spent! We will definitely be back!!

Great customer service, but we ordered jam and cream scones and ended up with rock cakes instead, nice but not what we were expecting, the coffee was cold to.

Location is lovely. Went for a walk to Causey Arch before heading to the Inn for food (we didn’t have a booking). Food was good; large portions, tasty & reasonably priced for what you got. Staff were great; very friendly & welcoming. Will be going back.

I think I’m the only one who finds the South Causey completely over rated. Now, don’t get me wrong, the venue is gorgeous and the staff are good, however, the food is very average and expensive. We came for a family birthday night and as a 4 person family ordered 1 starter, 2 kids meals, 2 mains, 3 soft drinks and 1 pint, which came to an eye watering £85. We go out for meal regular so know the price of things nowadays but i just felt completely underwhelmed by the “ok” food which cost a fortune. I just feel that it is quantity over quality. Just my opinion.

Best breakfast I’ve ever had. The quality of the food was second to none. The staff were all lovely and couldn’t do enough to help, especially Sue and Danielle. I will be back without a doubt.

Stayed overnight after a beautiful wedding in the Durham suite. South causey inn is a great and beautiful spot, it has so many things to offer whilst you're here. Definitely recommend even if it was just for a meal in the restaurant

We stayed in the courtyard double room the beginning of October the room was immaculate and so much value for money love the south causey inn wouldn’t use another hotel 100% recommend as the staff are lovely and friendly the foods amazing what’s not to love ❤️

Went for a meal this evening and couldn't fault anything. The food was amazing and the portion sizes are huge. We were served by Bruno and were looked after very well and felt truly valued. Thanks for the great experience. Will definitely be back .

Had a brilliant nights sleep. Comfy beds, spacious room. Booked through Pets Pyjamas and so our dog was also well looked after, with a bed, treats and bowls supplied. Fantastic Sunday roast yesterday and gorgeous breakfast cooked to order. And to top it all off, feeding the alpacas and sheep this morning was such a perfect way to top off the last day of our holiday. Oh and not forgetting, all the people working there were so friendly and helpful 🥰 highly recommend you visit 👌

Attended a friend’s wedding and not disappointed. The whole team from welcome drinks, ceremony and catering/bar staff at the reception were excellent. The venue and setting was beautiful and the whole event was faultless. There was a medical emergency prior to the ceremony and the staff were so sympathetic and attentive, thank you. The food at the reception was wonderful and plentiful. Would highly recommend this venue for a wedding event.

We attended here recently for my sisters wedding. The venue is stunning with gorgeous surroundings. The room my sister had the ceremony in was gorgeous, it had a rustic feel and was coordinated perfectly. The gardens were the perfect area for photographs and a few drinks. Andrew - the master of ceremonies was amazing. He was on hand for everyone's needs without having to be asked. The food served was delicious and the portion sizes were generous. We didn't stay but I looked at the room my mum was staying in and they are decorated beautifully. Stephanie, the wedding manager has been attentive and it is clear from correspondence with her that they strive for absolute perfection for each wedding they host. I would love to attach photos but the bride and groom have requested we wait until they receive the official photos from their photographer.

After speaking to someone on the phone 2 weeks prior I was advised that fish & chips were on the menu on the bank holiday!!!! After looking at menus at other restaurants/ pubs we said we would all love to visit south causey. Mam loves her fish & chips so we decided on this venue. Also we were thinking of going on the Sunday but unfortunately they only had a Sunday menu on. Mam was taking us all out so it was a special day for her and family!!! So what a let down!!!! Especially after not being able to go anywhere else at that time. Unfortunately all fully booked. Mam ended up eating scampi wish she didn't really like. Complete waste of a day & get together.

We had Sunday roast dinner and it was delicious. The selection of meat was good and you can choose between one meat or more. The gammon was exceptionally good. The selection was Beef,chicken,pork and gammon. Yorkshire puddings and all the vegetables, mash and roast potatoes were in plenty. The gravy is to die for and you can have more if you ask. A good thing is you can take home what you can't eat. The tapas during the week are also lovely with a good selection. It may feel a bit pricey but it is worth it. The service is always very good and nothing is a bother. Very friendly staff and lovely atmosphere. We will be back soon!

We visited here for a friends function at the Hot Spot bar - lovely covered outdoor area with heaters and excellent bar staff, loads of seating! We chose to just have a standard room due to knowing we wouldn’t be spending much time in it, cosy comfortable room with all the amenities you’d need. Excellent shower! Breakfast is really great and a good selection. Would absolutely visit again!

We booked for 2 nights; the first for our anniversary and the second for a family wedding. Bit disappointed we had to take the twin room due to price as we were quoted £900 for a double and could not afford that. Nevertheless, it was an amazing stay. The staff at the front desk were very welcoming, as were all staff. Our room was cosy with a lovely big shower and air con, which was a god send. Breakfast was delicious and served quickly with croissants while we waited. The wedding was very well orchestrated and ran very smoothly and is a beautiful venue

Went for a meal with friends, got the Chilli beef nachos to start which where the best I'd had for a long time,the burger was equally as good ❤️

The rooms are very comfortable and stylish the service is fantastic a bit of the better track but u still get there but bus and the food isvto die for the portions are plenty and delicious and try there scorers I buy them every time I go to takeaway u het cheece fruit and cream perfect for tea

Got married here on the 14th of July at the Old Barn. Couldn't have been more of a perfect fairytale of a day. The staff were incredible, the food was delectable and our coordinator Lauren was outstanding! Looking forward to our anniversary stay, you really pulled out all the stops and made our special day, magical and what will be the fondest moment of our lives. We attended a wedding and stayed in the Causey cottage. Check in was quick and easy and we were shown to our room. The room was clean and exactly what we were after. The kids even had a fruit shoot and a snack on their beds which was a lovely touch. The bed was comfy and the private hot tub a really nice addition. We even watched a euros football match in the jacuzzi bath with the TV on the wall opposite. EV charging was also really easy using the podpoint app and was just opposite our room.

Lovely venue and very nice food ,but we did find the drinks to be a little bit pricey.

Nice, quirky rooms. The food was excellent. The staff were excellent and went the extra mile to ensure the guests were looked after. The venue is well worth a a visit, ideal for special private events.

Stayed here whilst on business for 2 nights - a warm welcome from all staff - room was spotless and well equipped. Breakfast and dinner was amazing. Nothing was too much trouble.

South Causey Inn. 2 adults plus grandson. Vegan roast was vegan sausages. Hot bap (14.95!!!) was cold meat and warm gravy. Kids meal - now I know what dirty fries are. So many grey eyes in them. All fairly unpalatable. Wine wasn’t overpriced. Everything else was.

We stayed here in our Motorhome to visit Beamish Museum . We pre booked dinner for a sitting at 19.00 on a Thursday night The setting was lovely and we were allowed to bring our dogs with us into a dog friendly area in one of the dining areas The service was brilliant and quite quick Chloe, the girl in charge of looking after us was outstanding with her professionalism and friendliness and is a credit to this establishment The food was excellent. A starter of delicious meatballs from the light bites menu followed by the best meat feast Pizza I have ever had. The amount of quality toppings was unbelievable and whoever cooked it to perfection deserves the highest praise Unfortunately it was that big and well topped I wasn’t able to finish it All in all this place is brilliant and I would so highly recommend it Top marks all round

Always a warm welcome, with excellent attentive staff along with great food and an excellent, extensive menu, that ensures there is “just the thing” you fancy. Always a pleasant experience and a consistency that is now seldom found. Well done everyone.

No food option for someone on a low cal diet.

Amazing restaraunt, staff members are very nice and the food comes very quickly. Although the portions are extremely large. Instead of just a slice of cheesecake for dessert around half of a cheesecake was received and instead of a brownie there were 2 brownies and ice cream and jam. The main meal was the same price as the dessert, but overall I really enjoyed it. Just a little bit too much to handle, if you would like a dessert, I recommend getting a kids main, they are a usual adults portion whilst the adult portions are doubled. Pricing was high £120 for 4 lemonade, 2 pints, 2 large glasses of wine, a kids pizza, fish and chips, cheesy pasta, chicken and bacon burger and mango cheesecake, cookie and cream sandwhich and chocolate brownie.

Had corned beef pie and the pastry was soft and mushy. The filling was dark brown and stodgy. Not the best for the price. It definitely was cooked fresh.

Had a wonderful day at my sons wedding.

Went for a wedding and meal afterwards, the venue for the wedding was lovely and the wedding breakfast was delicious. Only let down was the fact that some of us were gluten and dairy intolerant and we kind of had to edit dishes to meet our needs.

When we arrived we were checked in by Ross on reception who was so friendly and patient while answering all of our questions! (Also provided very speedy prosecco to the room!) Thank you for being so welcoming! Lee on the bar constantly had us covered with a steady supply of drinks to keep us going throughout the day! Excellent service and very friendly! Thank you for looking after us and our guests! We would also like to thank the waiting staff who served everyones meals quickly and smoothly! And of course, helped Lee to keep everyone's glasses full! We can't forget to mention the chefs and kitchen team for our delicious food through the day! Last but certainly not least - we would like to thank our wonderful wedding coordinator Lauren! She did an amazing job of keeping us calm and ensuring everything on the day ran smoothly! She completely took all the stress out of the day for us by ensuring we were where we needed to be at the right times and was only a message away if we needed anything else. She even loaned me her coat to go out and get photos as it was so cold and rainy! Nothing felt too much to ask! Thank you for everything Lauren! Thanks again to everyone - we would highly recommend the venue to anyone for a meal or a wedding! Beautiful setup, amazing service & tasty food! We will be back soon!

Ordered a 10oz sirloin steak was bang average. Added the garlic & chilly prawns as a side. £8.95. Told the waitress they didnt even have any taste and was told theirs nothing they can do about it. £4.95 for peppercorn sauce too which again is average. £50 for a meal only worth £30. Definitely not worth the money and definitely need to up the standards of food.

Love going here for a meal, have stayed previously and the room was lovely

Went to celebrate our sister/sister in law's 80th birthday for afternoon tea, couldn't fault, we were in a pod, which was really spacious and warm, food and service excellent, as I have tolerance to gluten it was a fantastic afternoon tea.

We went for afternoon tea. Lovely food, nice staff. Had to ask for a takeaway box as we couldn't eat it all.

Fabulous afternoon tea today with my daughter to celebrate my birthday. Must admit we both came away with doggie boxes and were happily full. Great selection and definitely worth having as a treat.

Lovely rural location. The restaurant has a great atmosphere. Very friendly staff. The food was excellent. Delivery of drinks service was not as fabulous as the food, but this is of no complaint as the variety of drinks available (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) was impressive. The restaurant is spacious and full of character. The style suits the location. There are many vegan options on the menu, and the restaurant caters for allergens very well. I will recommend anyone. I will definitely be taking my friends and family there 😊

Faultless service, great food - plentiful portions, loads of choice, good value.

Me and my mam visited last week and had a tapas tower we really enjoyed the selection of items and was served by Amiee she was amazing and was so informative on items they have due to me being a vegetarian, overall a beautiful place

We only visited the restaurant. We visited as a date night, but can safely say we’d never come back. My mam got married here a few years ago and it was lovely but it was so disappointing to see how downhill it has gone. Ordered chicken strips as a starter- no taste to the chicken, just incredibly dry. Ordered lasagna and a bolognaise pizza. Would appreciate having the fact both dishes came with huge chunks of peppers in noted on the menu. The lasagne was mush- there was no taste to anything. I tried a bite and almost had to spit it out. The bolognaise pizza was almost the same- no taste. The dough was undercooked and chewy, the mince had no taste. The staff were constantly over our shoulders but when it came time to pay, it took 5mins for someone to come and get the bill for us. I felt like I was being punished for not eating the whole pizza. We boxed the remaining slices of pizza up and took it to my brother who also couldn’t eat anymore than 1 slice because it was so bland. £50 for the privilege of tasteless mush, never again!
