Sonali Spice in East Riding of Yorkshire

We spent some time looking at various reviews for other Indian restaurants in the area and we decided on Sonali. We certainly weren’t disappointed. We asked for a table last minute and they squeezed us in. The restaurant was busy which is always a good sign. The staff were lovely and the food was piping hot and delicious. I would most definitely recommend Sonali and well worth a visit if you’re in the area. We will definitely be back.

Visited 8pm on a Saturday night and restaurant was busy as usual. Always a good sign; we booked late afternoon to secure our table, which was ready for us to be seated on arrival. Waiter quickly brought over our drinks. As much time as we needed to choose from the extensive menu. Wanted to try something new and waiter very knowledgeable about the meals, nothing too much trouble. Food came quickly and didnt disappoint. Absolutely fabulous. There are three Indian restaurants in Hornsea and having tried them all, feel this is by far the best.

Ordered a takeaway from this place sat and waited 30 mins no problem. Ordered onion bhaji starter, butter chicken ,chips chapati and poperdom with pickles, drove home ten mins then found out no onion bhagi in bag so informed restaurant, started my main meal chicken and the only thing it fed was the bin,thier was no chicken mainly sauce and that was disgusting its was a shame that I covered my chips in the sauce ,I would not recommend this place to anybody And before anyone says anything I lived in India for four years , that's nearly thirty pounds I will not see again

Came here for son in laws birthday meal ,we have been a few times .always made welcome and food is always good .we all enjoyed our meals ,we will be back .

Without doubt the best Indian restaurant in the East Riding Of Yorkshire. Food always perfect as is the service.

The food was over cooked, no taste & not worth the money the amount I got Didn't taste like chicken, tasted cheap & nasty. Won't go again

Super meal last night at Sonali Spice, Hornsea. Excellent choice, great value, helpful and friendly staff. Will definitely be eating there again.

My wife and children had an outstanding meal here with service that matched the excellent quality of food. Jay, the waiter, made us all very welcome and as I could not decide what to order, he asked a few questions about what sorts of dishes I like before making a recommendation which was spot on. It wasn't our first visit here and certainly won't be our last.

Absolutely superb as usual. All the 4 chef’s specials we had were terrific. This really is a gem, never disappoints. Plenty of cold lager available too! Service as ever, excellent.

Once again, really tasty meal, friendly service and relaxed atmosphere. Good to eat out for a change as we usually get a takeaway from here. Delicious food.

This has got to be the worst Indian food ever! Sonali spice used to be nice got a takeaway tonight and it was disgusting couldn't even eat it ! Chicken jalfrezi which was inedible thick sauce which mostly is onions horrible taste the garlic naan was so uncooked also couldn't eat it and the chips were rubbish will not be ever ordering from this place again !

Great evening , great meal, friendly staff good service and tasty good value food in nice atmosphere our first visit but we will be back again soon

The most bland food I have had.I think all the spice is in the restaurant name .The food had no flavor whatsoever?

When we arrived the waiter was very attentive pulling out the table for us to sit down and pouring our drinks We ordered onion bhaji and mixed kebab starters They arrived at the table and the onion bhaji looked like it had been fried and fried and fried again and was rock hard The mixed kebab was a small portion but was so so salty not nice tasting at all We didn’t complain I also felt like the waiters were laughing about us and talking in their language and staring Our main meal came next which was chicken tikka which was salty again and a lamb curry that tasted like a gravy Also a Sonali special curry that tasted exactly the same as the lamb curry The garlic naan was okay and the chips were okay but wouldn’t go here again We were asked at the end if we enjoyed it we said no and told them our gripes but nothing more was said and for £74 would not go there again

Ordered a take out for collection - told it would be half an hour and just as I arrived 30 mins later it was coming out of the kitchen for collection - perfect - food was very tasty , great Chicken Tikka and Chicken Madras - lovely onion bhajis - all very good - NB check if you need to pay cash as their card machine is sometimes down.

An easy 5 star eatery! The service is great, the food absolutely delicious. I’ve lived in Hornsea 20 years, but only recently started eating Indian food, so it’s my first visit to Sonali Spice. I can’t recommend this wonderful place enough! The decor inside is gorgeous. A really lovely meal out, and we will definitely be back!

Booked the sonali spice because we had been several times before covid. It was a farewell.meal as out daughter was to leave for a tour of duty with the RAF and we wouldnt be seeing her for a while. We booked and yes all covid procedures were in place, screens etc. We ordered, of course poppadoms first, read the menu but wanted to chat to our daughter as we had not seen her for a while bout things etc. After about 5mins of getting the pickle tray, we were asked to order mains, my husband was quite put annoyed with this and asked the waiter to come back as we were rudely interrupted. About 15mins had passed the place was getting busy and we ordered mains. We ordered three seperate meals to share, it was v bland but cooked, wasnt really what we had expected as when previously eaten there it was exceptional. We were not asked if we required desert or coffee efc, our bill came but was not totalled up. To end I know covid has had a massive impact on society but this review is not helping sonali spice at all. We were rushed, there was no interaction with staff, they were running arpund like headless chickens tryjng to get people served and moved on, it could have been so much different.

Only had their takeaways but all good, the last 10 or so! Wife loves their saag dish. Both mixed starters are also excellent. Great choice of naan and rice.

Went here to celebrate our 48th wedding anniversary. The staff were fabulous and attentive. They made sure out night was memorable Food was gorgeous. Excellent atmosphere Certainly worth a return visit Can’t praise them enough

Longstanding Indian restaurant, still as good as ever ,perfect food , friendly staff we will go again

All my friends just rave about this place, and it was packed, ordered a takeaway which again was incorrect, and really cold, its not cheap and really disappointing when its not what you wanted, and in the past have complained, asked them to check,but in these times now who wants to moan about missing mint sauces and wrong dishes and another journey out?

Never had a bad meal from Sonali Spice either as a take away or sat in the restaurant. Newly refurbished, the atmosphere is great, authentic and the staff look after you very well. My last visit was with some friends and we all had a great night. Very tasty, filling, reasonable and nothing too much trouble. The menu is huge, all questions answered and recommendations made. Looking forward to returning

4 of us went here and our waiter directed us to a table in between two unoccupied ones, he took our details and made us feel welcome. I explained what type of veggie curry that I liked and he went through a couple of options. We all had popadoms and the pickles tray, and all of our main courses were very substantial. The food was excellent with my curry being perfectly spiced, and the accompanying coconut rice was divine. A great place to visit.

Lovely take out tonight, starters, rice, Nan's main courses, poppadoms and pickles all delicious. Only here on holiday but if lived here would definitely indulge again.

After having heard glowing reports from my friends I decided to try a takeaway as earlier experiences were not great. Well it has changed, it is worse than before. From arriving to collect and being greeted by someone behind the bar area who was obviously having a bad day, his face showed it as did his manner- unwelcoming and abrupt. I had ordered meat samoses- greasy. extremely thin pastry and a monotone flavoured mince filling - a Reshmi kebab , not too bad but greasy. Main courses straight out of 1970's Indian recipe book, Tandoori butter chicken - one flavour throughout ,boring. Sonali Spice Special ( on advice from whoever's took the booking) - bland thin basic curry sauce , very little content very disappointing- Pilau rice and Nan bread ok. So overall another rubbish experience after years last tried. Suggest you come into the 2020 world of asian food, exciting, tasty and complex other restaurants are doing it not far from you.

Tried to book table for 5.15 on a Thursday. He asked me how old my children were, I replied 5 and 2. He rudely replied no children allowed in the restaurant under 5. This is not the way to run a restaurant. Very disappointed and very annoyed.

Visited here on a whim after venturing out for a drink. Waited 45 minutes for a table but the bar a few doors away had space so didn’t mind waiting plus (or it would have been a takeaway) it was early evening so expected a wait. Once we arrived we was asked to provide info for track and trace and noticed all tables were adequately spaced out with hand sanitizer available. Toilets were also clean with sanitizer and wipes available. Ordered our drinks and food and had a good bit of banter with the staff, as I don’t like coriander much so asked for my dish with little/no coriander so they said well extra chilli then I politely declined. This was accommodated for me no problem. I ordered the lamb tikka jalfrezi and it certainly didn’t disappoint. I couldn’t finish my meal so asked for a takeaway carton so I could take it home to eat later and this wasn’t an issue at all. Altogether an off the cuff visit to Hornsea ended well with nice food & drinks and the staff were great and you could have a laugh with them too. Despite what anyone else might say about the food being good etc, it all becomes meaningless when you see a waiter actually SITTING on a food trolley at the rear of the restaurant, and a few minutes later you see the same waiter delivering a trolley full of food to a table using the very same trolley. This is abysmal!

Came for ‘eat out to help out’ so obviously expecting it to be busy. Was our first visit so wasn’t sure what the food would be like. Was thoroughly impressed. Our waiter kept apologising for a delay but he didn’t have to because there really wasn’t much of one and we went expecting one. The food was exceptional. We all (5) had different meals and all were lovely. The chicken was very well cooked and just melted in your mouth. They were very accommodating for our youngest and kept her amused despite being busy. Loved the touch of personal service along with excellent food. Thankyou

We ate here recently. The food was really nice. Garlic naans were a little thicker than I’m used to but they were nice. The portions are really big. We ordered six rice between 7 of us and left at least half!I think this restaurant should ask people not to smoke near the door as like other reviewers have mentioned there was a frequent smell of smoke in the restaurant probably from people smoking near the main door.If I was reviewing purely on the food I would have given this place 4.5 stars but the waiter who took our order was so unfriendly (small, very slim man). He seemed completely agitated when taking our order, never smiled once. He absolutely stank of smoke which was really off putting. The other staff were much friendlier. I would happily eat here again (and hope the waiter was in a better mood)!

A really good example of an Indian restaurant, there is a good choice on the menu and a well-stocked bar .The staff are friendly and attentive ,recommended

If I could give a zero rating I would. Walked in and asked if on the off chance they had a table for 3, we were ignored for 5 minutes before being ordered to sit in the waiting area. 5 minutes later we were waved toward a table and then left to browse the menu, 20 minutes later and still no drink order had been taken. A couple who came in later than us had their order taken first by the rude waiter. Then when asked by some regulars where the younger ones were who did the running around he slagged the owner off to the full restaurant stating his boss was too tight. We promptly left and will not be going back!

This has to have been the worst Ever Takeaway I’ve ever had !!The chicken pakora did not !! Resemble chicken never mind pakora!! Like a flat breaded mc Donald’s chicken nugget!!The okra vegetable curry was really quite disgusting !! Yuk !! The chapatti was microwaved & reheated!! I’ve eaten Indian /Bangladesh food For over 40 years this gets -10 out of 10!! What a waste of £9 !!On my treat!! Such a shame that this establishment feel that they need to put out such disgusting food!!Even in the current climate!Really do you need to rip off your customers? Or is this usual standard? If I’m sick later ... as they’d how o feel now on way home I will call the Environmental Health tomorrow!!

Ordered over the phone which was answered in a polite manner. Popped into Hornsea and collected the order at the specified time, 45 mins after ordering. My order had just come out of the kitchen - paid and came home - just as we had ordered , really nice food - made a great change in these strange times.

Sonali takeaway is outstanding quality food, we had Balti special, naan breads etc, the food was superb

Booked a table for four and turned up on time, restaurant was obviously over booked and we were kept stood for a full hour.3 off the meals were enjoyed but the fourth one was not as ordered and tasted as though it had been smothered in pepper and literally inedible,dissappointed as previous visits had been good.

After using this restaurant since it opened ,I have yet to have a bad meal !Lovely decore ,friendly staff,and discreet music all add to the appeal ,I will continue to use and enjoy !!

After much consideration I decided on Sonil Spice to spend our NYE 2019. I invited friends and booked for 9.30pm.There were about 4 other tables in at the time but there was no atmosphere considering it was NYE? At one point I made small talk with one of the waiters about NY and he replied saying "we all have families too!?" clearly implying he didn't want to be there... However as customers we had chosen to spend our hard earn't cash supporting their business. The whole evening felt rushed and EVERYONE was out of the door for 10.30-11pm and the CLOSED sign was on the window (we were not told this would be the case on booking.) It is a good job we hadn't planned to stay for midnight and we had alternative arrangements.This is a real shame and disappointing as we considered other restaurants in Hornsea and chose this one and it wasn't a great reflection of a good night in Hornsea for our guests.

Recommend by a friend so we decided to try it and it was a definite five out of ten from me . Dont sit anywhere near the door as you get lots of folk nipping out for a fag and most have never been shown how a door works or more to the point closes . Food was all well cooked but we found it bland and a bit tasteless the guys serving where all very friendly , as like most people nowadays we have eaten lots of Indian food and as the title says it was ok would we venture back .. probably ... maybe

We greeted graciously and seated immediately. Our orders came promptly and the food was of a high standard. The Cobra beer on draught was especially welcome and very tasty as were the meals. The stuffed paratha was particularly delicious. A filling and very reasonably priced meal. The complimentary Baileys was a great touch and a satisfying end to a most enjoyable meal. A place to return to for sure.

Me and the wife was on a cheap week away when we spotted this place. Food was good but not as good as my local takeaway. I didn't like the Garlic Rice.

Great food and service. Will definitely return. Hidden treasure in Hornsea when you fancy a change from fish and chips. Would highly recommend a visit if you're in the area.

Phoned take away order in for pick up in 45 min, had to wait another 20 min before order was ready. The waiter gave us 2 popadom as a sorry. When we got home the popadom was soft andno pickel tray so thrown them away, Onion bhaji starters was tough , fries was missing from the order ,the curry was average, the Peshawar nan had very little filling , the standards have slipped as we have used this on a number of occasions, Is it time to use the new Indian restaurant in Hornsea ?

Admittedly we'd been driving for ages before we got to Hornsea so by the time we got round to this place we were starving. But I'll be honest we both thought the food was bloody lovely. Excellent service as well, including a genuinely funny waiter, and we left feeling very lucky to have stumbled across it. I almost went back the next night as well it was so good. Definitely check this place out.

We went to the east coast to have a relaxing weekend away. This restaurant was recommended to us by friends who live in the area.

Husband and I fancied a curry tonight. The food to be fair was ok although garlic nan was far to much garlic. but service was very very poor. Felt very very rushed, no chat and wasn’t asked if food was ok, dirty table cloth, felt very uncomfortable all night. Won’t be returning.

This is a first class place to take family for a birthday meal. We have been going now for many years and the food along with the first class excellant service has never wained. Highly reccomend.

We Hadn’t booked a table, but after being told to be seated in the waiting area for a short time, we were seated very quickly. The service was excellent and very generous portions of the food we ordered. The Naan bread was huge! Full credit to the staff there for their efficiency and helpfulness.

Went for a meal one evening, whilst holidaying in Hornsea. Chose the restaurant for it's convenient location and good reviews on trip advisor. We were not disappointed. The restaurant was clean and comfortable. All the staff were friendly, attentive and helpful. Above all the food was very enjoyable. I would heartily recommend.

Just visited this place for first time whilst staying over for one night nearby. We have been eating curries for over 40years and this is one of my all time favourites. Service superb....ambience superb...food 5 star plus! Well done guys what a fantastic place to eat!

We rang our order through. When we got it home, it was very disappointing to open up the containers. The korma sauce was no thicker than water with no more taste than water too. Authentic Indian?. I love Indian food and have visited many takeaways and restaurants. Sonali spice is by far the worst for flavour.

We have visited a number of times and every time we have enjoyed a really delicious meal. The staff are very polite and accommodating and will always try and fit you in even if you book at last minute. Always been very busy at weekends so would recommend booking. Tried many and varied dishes from the menu all were fantastic.

We booked a table for two at 7.30. We had Fish Pangnag and Sonali special biryani which were both outstanding. We were well looked after and the staff were very pleasant and finished off with a liqueur. 10/10

Once again another gorgeous takeaway although the staff need to lighten up a bit they’re loosing their usual friendly approach. Tried the newly opened Indian Maa first for a change but bit frantic in there so left and went to trusty Sonali

We often go here when we are staying on a local campsite & Sonali spice have never disappointed us however : when we decided to go this weekend we thought we were in a different restaurant : when we arrived about 7-30 it was extremely busy but we were seated straight away : we were left for about 15mins without been given a menu or asked about a drink , I had to ask if we could order some drinks & then a waiter walked past an chucked 2 menus on the table without a word to us , the place was so noisy you couldn’t hear yourself think I was in 2 minds as to leave or not but decided to stick it out as the food has always been really good in the past , well tonight it wasn’t so good both our dishes were lacking in meat an the sauce was very watery an thin vey disappointing - when we had finished our meal the waiter cleared our table without a word spoken to us to then return an again just chuck two hot wipes at us we decided to just go & pay an leave as we felt we weren’t wanted in there so after visiting many many times in the past I’m not sure I will be rushing back again so thankfully there is going to be a new Indian opening soon in Hornsea maybe they will welcome customers with an hello a thankyou and finally a goodbye sorry sonali spice you didn’t meet the standards tonight !

Visited on a quiet Friday night - the team were welcoming, funny and attentive. Really nice food - promptly served.

After a 4 hour drive to Hornsea, we wanted some quick, easy, delicious food. We rang up Sonali Spice, they were very helpful and gave us directions to the restaurant. When we arrived, the food was prepared quickly and the staff were friendly and took a genuine interest in us. The food was wonderful! Would 100% recommend!

Really great place seen the light on and asked for a takeaway and they said they had just closed but checked in the kitchen if they could do a quick takeaway and they did not let me down. Absolutely excellent service!

Great Staff and People in the restaurant and would really recommend going there. Was for my birthday and they also bought an Ice Cream with a candle out for me and also knocked 15% of my bill thank you so much :) Charlie

Visited recently for the third time and was disappointed with the service - ignored at the entrance when asked for a table - eventually was seated then it seemed like they wanted us out as they were obviously over booked - food was average also - took my partners plate of food away whilst she was at the toilet - you could obviously see she had not finished - won’t be going again

Our friend took us to Sonali as he had visited the previous week and said it was very good. I had the Tandoori chicken on the bone with Peshwari naan and lemon rice. We ordered onion bhajiis which were the highlight of the meal. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. We will be going back. The only down side was the ladies toilet though very clean was also untidy. The table we were taken to had had a family with children at it and we were surrounded by pieces of poppadom!!

Visited this restaurant last night to pick up a takeaway as a birthday treat for my daughters fiancé the staff are amazing so friendly! Opened the door for us, very welcoming. The food is cooked while you wait and was worth the short wait. Can recommend to anyone wanting a Bangladeshi takeaway or eat in. The food is cooked to perfection and even though we took it home it was delicious thank you sonali spice ! Be visiting again very soon .

We were visiting the area for a special birthday and booked a table going off previous reviews. We were not disappointed. The staff are unbelievably nice and welcoming. They couldn't do enough to help us. We were a mixture of ages and tastes and everybody found something they liked. Would definitely come back here if we are in the area again.

We live nearby and eat at Sonali on a regular basis. The food is very good quality, by far the best Indian in the Hull area. Always consistent and tasty. We have never been disappointed.

As always you get what you pay for here, staff brilliant, quick service fantastic food and at a very good value for money price love this little gold mine food is of high quality, hoping to book for Xmas day

Had takeaway meals from here before, but not been in restaurant, before; from entering the restaurant staff made us all feel welcome. Very good service for our 20 month old granddaughter; catering for her needs,nothing was too much trouble; food was lovely, better than our local restaurant. Would recommend a visit

My husband took me for a meal here for my birthday on the recommendation of a friend and we were not disappointed. Good service, great food and a very enjoyable evening. We had a chicken chaat and pakora (generous portions) after poppadoms and pickle tray. Then the mixed tandoori grill with a keema naan and a sonali spice with chicken, mushroom and prawn with pilau rice. All delicious, spicy enough, big portions all washed down with Cobra beer - a great meal. We will be back!

We love this restaurant and it’s a great favourite. The Pakora starters are particularly good. You definitely need to book a table if you want to go at the weekend.

Service was a bit up and down but they were very busy. Couldn’t fault the food. Very very good. Took some home also as generous portions.

Just had another excellent meal here again tonight . This Indian restaurant is always our first choice when we want a good Indian meal . We are slowly working our way through the mains on the menu but I always have to start with the onion bhajis they are just the best ever

Really liked the food here.....fantastic value too! We went midweek and it was busy....not sure if you can book. Do NOT be put off by the decor....which is a bit tired......but the food more than compensates. Staff were excellent......food was delicious!

Have been getting a takeaway from here for a few weeks and can’t fault it, the service is fantastic. We have garlic chilli chicken tikka masala and naga chilli chicken and they are amazing, you can taste the spices, it’s full of flavour and the heat we both like, the pilau rice is as it should be and the mushroom rice is even delicious the next day cold. Would highly recommend this restaurant/takeaway nothing is too much trouble, very friendly and helpful staff. We spend every weekend in Hornsea and now know our Saturday treat is well worth it.

Came to sonali spice for my boyfriend’s dad’s and my dad’s birthday. Couldn’t recommend it more! Food was amazing and the service was beyond what you’d expect from a restaurant. Very humorous and lovey staff from start to finish! I can’t wait to come back, just for the banter!

Having read the negative comments, we were contemplating whether to go amongst the other options in the Hornsea area. Having been here a few years ago and recently moved back into the area we thought we’d give it a try, and we were not disappointed. Every negative point we read on here didn’t exist. The service was fast, efficient and friendly, and the curries were genuinely one of the tastiest I’ve had in a long time. We had starters, 2 mains, rice, naans, drinks and it came to £31 in total. Amazing value for amazing food. We will return.

We decided to have set menu for 2. WOW food was very good and plenty of it, service was excellent and place was lovely and clean.

Just love it here! We own a holiday home and come here most Saturday evenings when visiting.

After reading a few of the latest reviews, we were a little concerned what the experience would be.

We had been meaning to get a takeaway from Sonali Spice for a long time and after reading reviews on TripAdvisor thought we would try it. We read reviews here that it is the best Indian some users have ever tasted but unfortunately either they have not eaten in a decent Indian restaurant or need to seek medical advice for their taste buds! This is without doubt the worst Indian we have ever tasted. Notwithstanding we had ordered an egg rice with our main dish and instead got two extra onion bhaji's that basically were inedible tough and burnt. The chicken korma had 6 small pieces of chicken in a sauce that was mostly disposed of in the bin. This was not a good experience and could not honestly recommend.

I have tried to attend the restaurant tonight at 2300 and all the signs and menus say the place closes at 0000. But they were closed and were cleaning up. Very disappointed. We asked if we could have take away but no chance.

My wife and I visited this small but pleasant restaurant one Thursday night and we wasn’t disappointed, the onion barji starter was delicious and fluffy. The main course was tasty too and we would highly recommend this place
