This is a handy spot for a break on the way to Inverness. Quite basic but not too bad. Plenty car parking. Not far from the main road. Could do with a Saltire or two. Also a bit of information about the town and the local and Scottish drink and food they serve. Not sure why it is listed as a British and not a Scottish cafe.

As usual, our regular stop today - either heading North West to Fort William to our static caravan or South for home. Oriana as welcoming as ever and lovely atmosphere with the big log burner blazing and making the place homely. Both of us had gorgeous home made soup and shared some fries. Had to have the fries to let the soup cool slightly lol. Lovely Caber coffee too. This lass works so hard given its just her and hubby who operate this large restaurant with occasional help from the lovely lad Charlie. Well worth a stop. Well done to a brilliant team🌼🌸🌹

We had previously visited this lovely cafe a few years ago whilst on holiday in the area so were pleased to be able to go again. Unfortunately our experience was not as good as last time. There were staff shortages which is quite understandable due to the remoteness of the premises but it did take a little too long. Staff were friendly and the food was tasty and reasonably priced.

Young girl with reddish hair served us. Clearly didn't want to be there. Very abrupt, and not at all accommodating. There was no fish on the menu so we were left with Mac & Cheese or a burger. We asked for a burger without mayonnaise (as Aunt is allergic to egg). She was told "You get it as it comes as we're under staffed" at this point it was nearly empty and only 2 tables waiting for food. Portion sizes were okay. Macaroni cheese was pretty flavourless and out of a tin. Decor was clean and pleasant, very traditional with a lovely wood burner stove (don't let young kids out of your sight though as not enclosed) Male staff member was heard to be much more friendly and agree to changes to menu items.

Wear your coat inside, drink and eat as quick as possible as your food and drink WILL go cold, if it even arrives warm. The whole place is freezing, toilets are in terrible condition, one working toilet for the ladies that had no lights working. The floor was so so slippery. Hardly anything available on the menu. One girl on the front taking orders and giving out food from the kitchen. Food is very cheap and not tasty. Save your money and drive onto the next stop for food.

My husband and myself stopped here for a breakfast on our way up from Falkirk. We did not eat everything on the breakfast so asked for items to be removed. We got told that the chef woukd kick off because of this, the girl said to the other one you can give it to him (our order) as he won't be happy. I asked if there was going to be a problem and the lady said the chef will kick off. I said to her it doesn't matter we will leave it and have a coffee. The lady came back and said i spoke with the chef and your in luck he is in a good mood and will do it for you. My response was no thanks. It's such a shame as we have been here before and it was beautiful, so disappointed with the service we got and don't think we will return.

The Snack Shack is far more than a snack place and is nothing like a shack. We've stopped here several times this year as it is on our route up to, or back from, Fort William. Sometimes we just grab a coffee and go, and sometimes sit in and eat. It is a comfortable and welcoming place. Last time was late in the evening and we enjoyed sitting by the wood-burning stove. The food and drinks are always excellent, as is the service. Highly recommended.

The Good Restaurant Staff helpful and friendly. Food hot and delicious. The Bad Another guest had to show me how to lock the door, turn a knob on the inside and lock from outside. Make sure you don't lock keys inside the room. My room was absolutely baltic, I used 2 duvets to try to keep warm. Towel rail broken. Soap diah on shower rail which had been broken from previous visits had a sharp broken edge to it, careful not to cut your back in the shower on it. The Ugly The shower had not been cleaned from the previous occupant. Used shampoo bottle on top of shower unit and previous persons body hair ontop of shower unit. I left my number for the manager when he came in to ring me after I had left, I explained to the waitress and left a note of the above. These issues can easily be resolved but like another reviewer has said the rooms really need investment. As i said at the top the staff were friendly and helpful and the food is nice.

I was travelling with 4 Americans and had tried to stop at the Lochside tearoom at Pitlochry which had closed down. Rather than go back into Pitlochry I suggested we continue North and stop further on. We followed the "Cafe" sign into Dalwhinnie and arrived at the Hotel / Snack Shack. To be honest I was a bit wary but the interior was bright and welcoming. The Americans ordered a variety of burgers and fries plus a sharing plate of fries and chilli. I opted for a roast beef roll. The food was delicious, everyone enjoyed it and the staff were excellent, service was slick and professional. Very impressed and well worth stopping by.

Stopped by this snack shack today, judging by the look of the outside, we were dubious, as the ancient building needs a lot of TLC. Paint peeling off, overgrown etc However, went for the takeaway coffee, tea and two bacon rolls and was very pleasantly surprised on entering. Inside has a nice open feel, recently redecorated, new carpets and a nice log burning stove. Plenty of room, staff were pleasant, covid measures were in place. Our drinks were hot and large. This was the only place in the area I could find that could reserve a table for five during the Eat Out To Help Out initiative, on the way back to Kenmore after a day at the Highland Safari Park. Now I know why.Incidentally, we booked a table at the Loch Ericht Hotel Restaurant - it's the same place as in all these pics, but the other reviews call it the Snack Shack. There is a takeaway next door by that name, but the impression we had from the website was that we'd be eating in a proper hotel restaurant. The lounge reminded me of an 80s ski lodge - tall, vaulted ceilings, balcony, long, well stocked bar. Untidy but comfortable. Its age made us wonder about its cleanliness, but the only staff member we saw on duty (behind the bar and waitressing) wore PPS and we saw her disinfect the table so thought it would be OK. She was very pleasant, couldn't fault her at all. The place was, as others have said, quirky and in other circumstances I wouldn't have minded staying there. But the food was TERRIBLE. It started off well enough. Starters were all deep fried - garlic mushrooms and brie wedges and were tasty enough - certainly presented very nicely. But then out came the main courses. Our three children had macaroni cheese and all three said it was tasteless and wouldn't eat more than a few mouthfuls, one saying that the stringy cheese reminded her of microwaved cheese slices. I had crispy chilli beef with rice - beef was so rubbery and chewy I could barely break it down to swallow it. Chilli coating was BBQ sauce, rice was the blandest I've ever tasted (how on earth do you spoil rice?) carrots and other veg were soggy and overcooked. The only bright spot was my partner's steak pie, which was quite tasty - although again the veg was overcooked and tasteless. We didn't even finish dinner, just got up and left. Not even a coffee. It's difficult to know how to react to this, given how hard times are for these places at the moment, but even at half price we paid too much. We're not restaurant snobs - we're happy anywhere providing the food tastes good but this fell far short of any reasonable expectations. It just felt like a badly-cooked meal of the cheapest quality ingredients. Or perhaps the ingredients had been sitting in freezers right through lockdown and were now approaching the end of their viability - in fact, when my daughter opened a sachet of vinegar for her chips, she found the ingredients had separated and the caramel had congealed, leaving a dribble of something clear and unappetising. Says it all, really.

It was easy to find. It's a spacious place to snack. It was a cold day and the cafe had not had much time to warm up. Also, being a main Scottish Holiday there were not many people about. The lady at the counter was very welcoming and after taking our order at the counter, suggested where we would be warm and comfortable. She made sure that we were in direct line to one of a number of heaters. While we waited for our order we took time to enjoy the lovely view. The lady explained about the particular wild life that was playing in the running water. We had a traditional breakfast/brunch (egg and bacon) in a good-sized bun with a side of baked beans. Not greasy and nice and hot. There are split levels to negotiate at the snack shack. The toilet facilities are shared by the hotel attached to the Snack Shack.Though a bit dated, the toilets and wash area were all very clean and fresh. We were happy with our visit. It's not every day you get a knowledgeable talk on wildlife when you stop off for refreshments!

Dropped in here for lunch with family for lunch and a cuppa. Friendly, not rushed, affordable and tasty. When having sandwiches at other places such as House of Bruar and Hettie's of Pitlochry they have been pricey, overly creamy and heavy but the roast beef, horseradish and salad sandwich was the best of the bunch. We also had a ham and cheese toastie, tuna and cheese toastie and a chicken burger. Everyone fully enjoyed. Fresh, crisp salad which were well presented on each plate. Lovely chicken fillet. I really don't understand how anyone can be negative about the price here, as I find many coffee shops in the Highlands quite pricey for what you get. Lovely, relaxed, informal lunch. You get exactly what you pay for. It was lovely to meet a smiley, lovely waitress from our home of Gateshead enjoying Highland life.

For the town a large restaurant of maybe 15 tables. Order at the counter and they bring your food to you. Not really table service. The food was ok. The cost was mid priced. There were a few choices on the menu, and daily specials. This restaurant primarily serves the hotel guests.

Stopped here just off the A9. The place is clean, staff are friendly and there is a selection of quick snacks. Outside there’s a pony, goat and lots of ducks to watch. Would stop again.

We had to eat here because there’s barely anywhere to eat in Dalwhinnie. However, we were pleasantly surprised - the food was tasty and the vibe was friendly. The review is only 3 star because there were a lot of flies buzzing around the hot drinks machines, which no one really wants to see!

We were driving down from the Eilean Donan Castle at Dornie to Edinburgh (a 193 mile drive) and were badly in need of a cafe for a quick break. Just before connecting to the A9 route, we found this place. Very friendly staff, great locales, and food that was comforting to all types of diets.

Went there for lunch. We were treated extremely badly by one of the male waiters - DG! He was rude to our group right from the time we entered the restaurant.

The sandwiches were pre-made and sort of soggy. The atmosphere was plain. The men's restroom was dirty. The latte I had was good, but I truly wish there were somewhere nearby for better lunch fare, as we wanted to eat before we went to Dalwhinnie Distillery (which was definitely worth touring).

We stopped here on route to the wildlife park for coffee and cake and were not disappointed. The coffee was great and the cake sizes were huge. all at a reasonable price. Good menu of breakfast, lunch and snack items and it was reasonably busy. Friendly staff too

The food here is lovely. I can highly recommend the full cooked breakfast. I'm sorry to say it beat me on a couple of occasions but I will keep trying. I have had breakfast, lunch and dinner here and am yet to have a bad meal. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Called in to this restaurant while waiting for people to do the distillery tour. Friendly and welcoming man at the counter but as far as the main attraction, the food, distinctly average. Large choice of menu but went for the fish and chips. As is often the case in these type of establishments the plate was an uninspiring site of the cheapest of frozen chips which taste of nothing, a spoonful of frozen peas and two fried fillets of, yes again, frozen fish! Cannot complain that it did not fill a hungry belly however it did not inspire me to either return or send others their way. Quite pricey at £11 as well! If only a little more love was shown to the preparation and delivery of food in such establishments then maybe Scotland’s culinary reputation might match that of the surrounding scenery. Less choice on the menu, less deep fried frozen food and more actual cooking = success and reputation. Granted it may be hard work but only a suggestion??

Ideally placed close to a petrol station. Group of 16 of us arrived and we had lunch quickly served, not much else about and was a welcome stop on a long Day’s riding

Stopped for a snack on the way north. Excellent facility and very popular as it was busy. Ordered our food and drink and it was delivered to our table quickly.

Très agréable situation entre 2 ballades, service très prévenant. Des plats typiques, abordables. Le top après une journée de tourisme.

After poor experiences in Oban and Fort William this place restored our faith in a Scottish breakfast and hospitality. Great service, even better breakfast made with quality ingredients.

The Fish and Chip Shop is in our experience is without a doubt the BEST IN CAITHNESS AND SUTHERLAND! The fish was white and flakes. fried in beautiful crispy batter and the chips were perfect. We have experienced other Chip Shops in Wick,Thurso and Helmsdale, plus Mobile Chip Vans in Lybsterand Dunbeath and this has been the best so far too. We travelled around 30 miles to eat here and would do so again. THANK YOU.
