Smugglers Fish and Chips in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Been visiting here for many years whilst staying near the lizard. Unfortunately, both their portion sizes and quality have reduced. The vegetable burger was over cooked and rubbery and the skin on chips were also overcooked. My son enjoyed the chicken strips and the cod (albeit small portion) was delicious. Overall, disappointed after spending £40. The staff were extremely friendly and therefore we will try again on our next visit.

We always go to Smugglers when we go to The Lizard, unfortunately this time the batter on our 2 Cod was soggy and the Mushy Peas were more like runny Peas. What a shame!

The best fish and chips I’ve had in years! Crispy, light batter, a good chunky piece of perfectly cooked fish and plenty fabulous chips. And the homemade tartare sauce was a great finishing touch. Also great that they support local fisherman and have different options available depending on what’s been landed that day. We had the option of locally caught haddock and hake as well as cod. Will definitely be back!

Staying in the area this was recommended. Cod and chips how it should be with crispy batter and tasty chips. Some chips were tiny but probably the potatoes used.

We came here after 5 miles on the coast path. All of my party were hungry and well up for fish and chips. Fast service, good quality and well cooked. Overall, decent and not excessive portions at a fair price.

Didn’t intend to have fish and chips but saw people eating them and the smell was wafting out as we passed the shop so was going in to just get some chips. Looked at the price list and saw that they did a small cod so went for it and had that with chips………… I was not disappointed as they were the best fish and chips I’ve had for ages. The chips were really crispy and a good size piece of fish which I shared with my husband!

Excellent food and service. The vegetarian options were excellent and the chips were perfectly fried being fluffy on the inside and just the right side of crispy on the outside. Would recommend to anyone looking for really good food.

Stopped for fish and chips after spending the day on the beach. Served by a lovely, polite young man. The fish and chips were delicious, couldn't fault them. Good portions and fresh, just what you want!

We’ve ordered from here many times and the food is excellent, but this time all the chips were missing from our adults fish and chips. We didn’t realise this until we’d driven back to our campsite and we kicked ourselves as this isn’t the first time they’ve got the order wrong. Check before you leave, as once you’ve gone they don’t care and won’t do anything about it.

We’ve been bid fans of Smugglers over the years and had great fish & chips. However, on this occasion we were extremely disappointed as the fish, chips & mushy peas weren’t up to the usual standard. The fish was obviously fresh and delicious, but the batter was thick and soggy. The chips were well done bordering on burnt and the mushy peas were tasty but far too runny especially when trying to scoop them up with a small wooden fork. The staff were helpful and friendly, it’s just a shame about the food!

When is a fish and chip shop not a fish and chip shop?When they don't sell fish! Recently visited the area,and after arriving earlier in the day,which was a Saturday kept note of the fish and chip shop,thinking we'd be enjoying fish and chips for our dinner that night.Sadly no.We visited the shop at 7pm,small queue ahead of us at the counter.Server was informing customers there was no longer ANY fish available,just the odd couple of sausages,nuggets and chicken strips.These were slowly going down in numbers in the queue until the person in front of us asked for sausages?None available...Nuggets?Again none available.Ok chicken strips?None available either! By the time we got to the counter all that was available was chips.Thats it! You would assume that being in this part of Cornwall,fish would be plentiful and available.Not at this fish and chip shop! ( Don't ask for curry sauce either,another customer asked for it?You guessed it! None available! Whoever does the ordering...you need to do a better job! Felt sorry for the server having to deal with disappointed customers.He needs a pay rise!

Outstanding fresh fish and beautifully cooked chips. I'm a hull boy and so am used to deliciously fresh haddock and chips and am always apprehensive going anywhere to have fish and chips even on the coast as it simply can't compete. I also never usually veer away from Haddock, however when we went there was only catch of the day on offer (Hake and Skate). I tentatively bought 1 Hake and chips for my son and wife and I to share fearing disappointment as I had tried 'fresh' hake in menorca before and was unimpressed. However this was one of the most delicious subtlest flavoured but clearly freshest fish that I had ever tasted. So nice I immediately went back for another portion. Would highly recommend.

We always Visit Smugglers when we visit The Lizard and as always the Hake & Chips were delicious. The hake was fresh with crispy batter and the chips were cooked to perfection.

Ordered cod and chips to feed a family of four, food arrived within a few minutes, hot, fresh and absolutely top notch. Crispy batter, flakey fish, decent portion sizes and yummy chips. The best bit... the best chippy curry sauce I've ever had!

Ordered Hake & Chips with mushy peas and they were delicious, the hake was deliciously fresh and was cooked to perfection in crispy batter. The chips piping hot with lots of crispy bits! Definitely a 5* experience!

We were very much looking forward to a nice fresh Cornish fish and chips. What we had was a greasy (well used oil, and I really mean well used oil dark yellow colour) battered cod and an ultra greasy frozen chips. We couldn’t eat it...

Have bought fish and chips here many times before but won't be buying them again. Paid £29 for two portions of haddock and chips. Weren't the tastiest of meals. Fish had too much better and chips were dry and unpalatable. Still, lesson learned.

We were back at the Smugglers for the first time this year, Cod and chips were excellent. Chunky fillet and beautiful chips golden and full of flavour.

First of all the positives, really nice fish and chips, beautifully cooked. The only downside was the cost. I get that things are getting expensive these days. But £24 for fish and chips for 2 people was a bit much.

Chips were good but the battered cod was burnt, actually black underneath and tasted rancid. Maybe Bruce should stop messing about with the blonde girl and pay attention to the fish he’s cooking. Chips and curry sauce were good though.

We visit the Lizard a couple of times a year and usually eat fish and chips. We bought 4 large cod, chips and 2 kids meals for about forty quid. The fish was appalling, tiny pieces covered by hard batter but sloppy on the inside....

The smugglers has risen to the challenge of covid brilliantly, still delivering great service and wonderful fish and chips. After a fabulous day on the Lizard, we finished it off with a great meal on the Green. Thanks guys!

This USED to be a decent chippy (I visit Lizard regularly), but i just paid £5 for a piece of fish barely 6 inches long with soggy under-cooked batter. The chips are tasteless; save your money and buy some Walkers ready-salted crisps instead, they're far tastier.

Staying at Parkdean Lizard Point worth the drive from the on site.Exceptional quality of food and great customer service. We knew about from previous visits.Look up and call in order to save waiting both times during week all was waiting. Great food, staff. Worth a visit.

First fish and chips in Cornwall and after the walk to Kynance from Lizard Point and back again we were really looking forward to it. I had the fish wrap but they had run out of lettuce and the fish wasn't battered. It can only be described as a breaded piece of fish that you would buy from a supermarket. The chips were very greasy and far too crunchy. My husband and son liked their battered fish but agreed with me on the chips. My daughter enjoyed her burger. All round mediocre and won't go there again next year.

We always make a visit to Smugglers when in Cornwall. Even if we aren’t staying close to the Lizard. This visit was as good as ever. Love Smugglers and we will see you again!

We never miss a chance of fish and chips from Smugglers when we visit the Lizard. Efficient telephone ordering service. We enjoyed excellent cod and chips again, really crispy batter on the fish ( and still crispy when we got back to our holiday accommodation), freshly cooked chips all supplied with salt and vinegar sachets and wooden cutlery.

In the present Covid conditions the ordering and collection system was brilliant - efficient and well organised. We took our order to Lizard Point and ate overlooking the sea. The fish was delicious, as were the chips. Highly recommended!

They are operating telephone orders from the door from 6pm weekdays and 5 pm weekend.order after 4 pm when the catch from the boats are in.I had hake one night an£ monkfish another,ate it on the picnic tables that are dotted around.They are good portions.If you turn up without a pre order they will fit you in,but you may have to wait longer and queue often long with holiday makers,it’s popular.

Amazing chippy! Fish was lovely and crispy and not too greasy and chips cooked perfectly. Good value for money as well. Family of five fed for £23 which is excellent.

Very good fish and chips - chips excellent, fish portion fine, batter was crisp and not greasy. If Tripadvisor allowed a 9 out of 10 we’d have given it. Service excellent - and as an aside (nothing to do with restaurant) we were able to eat at a nearby public bench without being harassed by seagulls.

We ordered a decent selection from the menu, cod, scampi, chips, peas, curry, halloumi sticks. All of it was delicious. We sat and ate it on the benches just outside the shop. Fish was delicious and flaky and the scampi was juicy and sweet.

Once again while holidaying in the Lizard village we brought a fish and chip tea from Smugglers. Again we were not disappointed. They were great. The staff are friendly and nice. Even invited our dog into the shop, which is always a + in my books. So if you are down in the Lizard village give them a try. You will not regret it.

As we were in Cornwall for 2 weeks, we went here three times and no problems whatsoever. If you go try and go earlier if you can, as there is more choice of fish, as when it's gone it's gone as it's fresh fish bought in daily. Over the years we have tried all sorts of fish and loved all of it. So be daring and try something different. I think pollock is our favourite. The chips can be a bit hit and miss depending on the time of year, but this year they were fantastic, A must if your in the area.

Get your order in early for the locally caught fish so you don't miss out if you want to eat later. Had the pleasure of eating from here twice in a week... decadence or what?

We ordered 3 cod and chips which was quick and easy to do, the fish was well cooked and was nice and flakey and the batter was lightly golden.The chips were nice and crispy and were fluffy inside,The staff were quick to serve us and were very friendly. I would highly recommend you visit.

I haven't had fish and chips for so long (and don't eat much fast food!) so was a bit apprehensive. However, service was quick, fish was delicious and chips were super tasty. I had a mini cod and small chips - perfect for people who don't want a huge portion!

It’s always reassuring to see a list of the fresh fish to choose from. Choice of the day was cod so that’s what we opted for. It was simply delicious - the whitest fish cooked beautifully. The batter was crispy and not too thick and the chips were crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy within. Great value for money too. We drove down to the lighthouse car park and enjoyed ours with a view of the sea. Simply perfect!

One of the best fish and chips we've ever had in the most southerly F&C shops in the land, who would believe it. Tasty and well cooked, portion size perfect and reasonably priced.

We live in Helston but the best fish and chips by far are found at the Smugglers on the Lizard, last night we had a lovely piece of fresh haddock cooked to order served with a large portion of chips straight out of the fryer and a generous serving of their very tasty curry sauce. Parked up on the green in our motor home it was the perfect end to a lovely day. We have been going there for years and still the same people always great service and a bit of banter. Above all I like their sustainable principles both to the environment and the fish they source. Great value for money and great taste too.

If you’re staying on or near the Lizard this is worth a visit. Five of us all had the Haddock, as it was one of the locally caught fish on the menu. Everyone agreed it was very good. Batter was light and crispy, and the fish was well cooked and fresh, but the biggest surprise was the chips, really lovely fluffy potato and crispy on the outside! We all would have gone back again but just ran out of time on our holiday.

Really good fish and chips, best for a long time, good value, not overpriced considering the location. Serving staff were very friendly. Was very impressed that although they were very busy (Bank Holiday weekend), the lady serving took time to explain an item on the menu to a young lad until he was happy. Would go back again during another visit.

The fish was lovely and although a mini fish and chips was really mini it wasn’t too badly priced, however we ordered two portions of scampi & we got 7 pieces per portion for £5.50 each!!! We thought that was ridiculous as it was clearly not freshly sourced and was out of a packet

We had fish and chips elsewhere and there was no comparison! This place (no pun intended!) is amazing! We had to queue as it was clearly popular but it was worth the wait. Absolutely delicious fish and chips that were piping hot and really fresh.

Wow what an amazing place! It’s so popular they queue out the door, saying that they are so organised and continually cooking you don’t have to wait long to be served. Huge choice of fish including local catch of the day. We sat in the car and ate them and they were yummy. The fish was beautiful and the chips best I have had. If you are in the area and looking for fish and chips, this is the place to go. It is great value for money and the food was absolutely delicious. We had 3 portions of chips and 2 big pieces of cod for £16! The fish is fresh and locally caught and the chips are amazing. We ended up buying another 2 portions of chips another day and again, they didn't disappoint! Would definitely recommend this fish and chip shop.

Back to the lizard again this year. And smugglers is still as good as ever. The fish and chips here are so good and reasonably priced. I would go as far as saying it’s the best fish and chips I’ve ever had.

We always come here when we’re in Cornwall. The fish and chips are amazing and the portions are very generous. Yes you have to wait when it’s busy, but it’s worth it!

Busy but very well organised and absolutely worth the wait. The best fish I’ve tasted for ages, fresh from the local area. Chips were excellent too. Absolutely recommend especially on a warm summers night.

The Haddock and chips was beautiful.... glad we shared between two as more than enough for us both. So glad we called in here. The next time we are there I’ll return and try the other specials.

The chips are cooked to order as is the fish very nice fresh and tasty what more can you ask for. We would all definitely recommend.

Our food was lovely - me and the kids had fish and chips/sausage and chips and it was very fresh. My husband had a vegetarian spring roll and chips. The vegetarian menu is really limited though but it's to be expected in such a small place.

They were closed until 4 o'clock on a Friday in mid June when the place was full of tourists wanting lunch!

Visited lizard point. Chips and batter were nice and crispy, cod was perfectly cooked. The curry sauce was nice and not too hot. Well done smugglers! £15 for cod and chips twice and curry sauce! Great value!
