Smiths Chippy in South Tyneside

Ordered fish and chips which was never delivered! Please avoid and now I have to contact bank for a refund. It has new ownership and clearly has no clue how to run a chippy!

Ordered a delivery which never came! About to call banks next as they aren't even answering phone calls. The new owners has really ruined this chippy now which has been around for years and years.

Just walked past and saw notice on the window that Smiths Chippy has ceased trading. Didn't take long for the new owners to trample it's good name into the ground. What a shame a brilliant Chippy that's been around for years and years has now gone to the grave by 2 people that hadn't a clue how to run a Chippy.

Would have given no stars if that was an option! Used to love this family run business when it was under the original owner. Tried it when it was first taken over and wasn’t impressed by either the food or the service. After seeing lots of good reviews, we decided to give it a second chance. All I can say is I don’t believe the good reviews were genuine as you can’t be so unlucky to get them on a bad day twice. Very underwhelmed by the attitude of staff and the level of service. The food was worse than the first time we tried it. The fish was almost none existent within the overcooked batter and the bottom nearly fell out of the box there was so much grease. We definitely won’t be giving them a third chance.

Chips were caked in grease. They had been fried multiple times, and were tasteless. Guy serving was stood outside habing a cigarette when I arrived and he come back in to the shop and did not was his hands. Had to ask for fresh chips as they.were drowning in vinager when I asked for Salt and Vinager.

Ordered online to collect a hour later, get there to collect and no order as the machine had been unplugged. Got a refund when they said they could cook the food in a couple of minutes. Terrible service, won't bother again.

Just been in for fish and chips and went to the beach. The fish was just perfect as it was by the previous owners. The chips were crunchy and not greasy at all. Maintaining the same standards. Will be back soon😃

Absolutely disgusting waited over an hour for hard inedible stale chips, battered sausage that was layered in thick grease, strange tasting curry sauce, and thick custard like garlic. Then got told would send more food...waited another hour for it not to arrive. Used to be one ov the best chip shops in shields, I dunno what's happens...Will not be going back that'd for sure

Always loved this chippy but did not realise that it now has new owners. Longest wait & very expensive. The chips were thick and greasy as was the fish. The box was falling apart and soaked in grease and paid nearly £20 for it all to be binned and actually felt quite sick after. Won’t be returning again. So sad to see this once fantastic fish & chip shop go so downhill.

Expensive and really quite unpleasant. Thick greasy chips, box falling apart from the amount oil. Fish was just ok, most of it went in the bin. Used to be really good but has new owners and they clearly have some lessons to learn. Wouldn't recommend and won't return.

Specifically wrote in the notes section requesting salt and vinegar and batter. Didn’t get any.

Has gone drastically downhill. I’ve always gone to Smiths (rather than its more well known neighbour) and the food has always been great and good value for money. I called in today to get some chips and was absolutely shocked at the small portion size, it was literally half of what a Large portion used to be and they weren’t even well cooked. I’m guessing that it must have new owners but unfortunately the food and portion was so poor that I won’t be going back there again.

Usedto be one of my favourite chip shops , obviously Asian people have took it over and it’s gone down hill , Food is yucky now , shame .It’s also strange how all these positive reviews are from Asian people . New Owners putting positive reviews on . And yous defo are , i can tell by the amount of good grammer and why would they know the name of the owner / staff ?

CLEAR FAKE REVIEWS CHECK TRIP ADVISOR THEY CANT GIVE FAKE REVIEWS THEMSELVES AS EASY Please check all recent reviews.. The new owner who is Asian is clearly getting either people who he knows or fake accounts to counter the genuine negative reviews the company is receiving(all of recent positive reviews have only 1 review on there account coincidentally this 1 business?). The 5 star reviews over last 2 month if you check only have 1 review which is his own business apart from 1 which clearly states the person has never stepped foot in the shop. NEGATIVE REVIEWS LEFT RECENTLY ARE FROM REAL PEOPLE NOT LIKE THE POSITIVE REVIEWS CLEARLY LEFT BY THE NEW OWNERS .... NOTHING SHORT OF FRAUDULENT CHECK THE VOCABULARY USED FOR ALL RECENT POSITIVE REVIEWS, THIS IS CLEARLY THE SAME PERSON OVER AGAIN ON DIFFERENT ACCOUNTS ITS SO OBVIOUS. Best fish and chips by far super tasty & plenty!

Food was late, which would have been fine if it had been any good but the chips were black and disgusting, fish was rank and they forgot the drink with the kids meal. Worst visit to date, won't be using again.

Really pleasant owner, Sushant, couldn't have been nicer. Lovely freshly cooked fish and chips. Will definitely return. Reasonably priced too.

Had lovely fish and chips last night. Cooked fresh. With the chunkiest chips ever. The fish baer was crispy and light. The owner Sushant was polite and cheerful.

I’ve always gone to Smiths Chippy and it used to be a good value for money alternative to the more well known shop a few doors down. I went in today and sadly it’s gone downhill massively. I ordered a Large portion of chips and was shocked at what I was given, it was less than half the size it was before and they weren’t even very well cooked. I think it must have had a change of ownership since I visited it last year but it was so poor now that I won’t be going back there

Visited the chip shop recently to place an order of 4 fish and chips and use the loyalty cards which had accrued 14 stamps although this was just a fraction of food purchased over the past 9 years. Disappointing that keeping to the tradition that is inferred on the website and LinkedIn of the loyalty scheme which entitled a fish and chips for every nine previously purchased doesn’t extend to the customers now who have supported the business over the years or that they couldn’t have informed me when they last stamped the card as to when they would no longer accept the loyalty card.

Great service and food still as good as the previous owners. Best fish and chips in town. 👍

chips were black but the fish was lovely.

Some of the worst chippy chips I’ve ever had. Either completely overdone and brown or basically raw potato. The burger was ok but somehow one half hot and one half stone cold. Fish cake I’m told was basically just mash potato. No curry sauce and very slow service despite them phoning to say it was ready and they wanted to close soon.

Food fresh and hot. delivered early and was able to track it which was excellent, which was a bonus as was starving!

Very late, food piping hot though. The delivery driver left the front door wide open after asking on the instructions to leave in the porch. Will still order again in the future, maybe not on a bank holiday as know it will be busy.

Went in for Fish & chips this evening, Good Friday so knew fine well there would be a wait- staff were very apologetic total wait was only 30 minutes which for a bank holiday is understandable, food was delicious- some negativity when I was in from some customers regarding the wait , give the staff a break who were working very hard to serve as quickly as possible- will go back and recommend

Absolutely diabolical service. Staff seem not to know what they are doing. Too many staff getting in each others way doing very little. Very disorganised service with lots of unhappy people waiting in the queue. If you've been to Smith's in the past this is definitely not it, only by name. Will not come back again and don't recommend

Fresh fish and chips.chips were crispy.

Used this place many times. It's now a new ownership. Ordered fish and chips and when I got home I found the food to be processed frozen food! Both chips and fish were the frozen variety. This is supposed to be a fish amd chip shop and they are charging 10 pounds for frozen food. It was very poor quality. Totally unacceptable.

I ordered large chips with a smokey and battered sausage. The chips portion was tiny and they weren't cooked properly, actually tasted a bit stale and the smokey was burnt

Meal was nice and hot quick delivery

Gave a great review to this chippie a few weeks ago as very happy. Had been recently taken over and was very happy with my experience under new owners. 2nd time was not as good but acceptable. Today bought Cod and chips and extremely disappointed. Batter soggy. Chips undercooked and soggy. Obviously using oil not hot enough. And I can see thst even though not even a chef. Threw large part in bin. Probably won't use again and sad as first impressions few weeks ago so positive. Hope they get sorted and realise the issues.

Used Smiths for years but not for last few months, £7 for a fish about 5 inches long. The batter was thick and greasy. 1 2 inch by 1 inch pot of peas, same for garlic sauce Chip butty was a tiny bread bun. Long wait after spending nearly £30. Never again 😱

Took my money and then made me wait over 25 mins for a bag of chips. Then when I gave up, they short changed me. This isn't the same chippy under its new owners. Gone wildly downhill

It was lovely, great quality/taste. Defo happy but ever do slightly disappointed in portion size of large chips. Not put off however and defo try again like I say food itself tasted good.

I have tried fish and chips with peas, it’s best combination. The fish was good and the chips was crunchy.

The crispy chips were delicious honestly, and with the curry, it was just the right combination. Not too oily not too dry, just the right mix.

Never realised it had been taken over,ordered fish and chips and sausage and chips online.Ordered for 17.45 got an email saying delayed until 18.00.Arrived at 17.50 my order was waiting in the warmer.Got home to find order lukewarm at best, gone downhill since it was taken over Won't be going back.

This used to be our favourite chippy, hadn’t been in a while and now sadly, I don’t think we’ll bother going back. Service is efficient, everything cooked to order so hot and fresh. The bread buns are now tiny, not the fluffy stottie you used to get, and the buns aren’t even buttered so really dry. My cheese patty was a potato’patty - opened it to have a look and there appeared to be about 2 piece of grated cheese mixed in. Hence why you can’t taste cheese - you can’t taste what isn’t there. Disappointing

Have used this chippie before and others nearby that I preferred. Must say today best experience. Staff seemed new. Fish and chips were amazing tonight. Chips perfect. Plenty fish and light crispy batter. Even batter scraps lovely. Reason did this review as seemed hugely better than previous experiences. Well done staff!

I’ve had fish & chips here in the past & it was good value, but not today, the chips were great, as where the peas & curry sauce, but the fish was very poor value for money,?thete was more batter than fish, for £9.50 it was very poor, I won’t be returning

Awful, waited 40 mins for fish bites and chips and battered sausage and chips. The chip shop was not even that busy. I placed my order and had to wait twice for chips to be cooked. Crazy experience the woman serving apologising constantly. Its not rocket science but you should clearly know whos in the queue and whos order is next. Absolute chaos, I watched x3 just eat drivers leave the shop as orders were not ready. I get that food is ordered as they go but waiting for chips to run out then ask for them to be replaced once they have ran out surely when you have people in the shop you keep ontop of the basics. Why is it coming down to handfuls of chips to be ran down before replacing them twice on a gamble that the chips are going to get wasted? I can honestly say I wont return after years of going. The amount of fish in the fish bites was disgraceful, felt like I was just eating batter. Curry was cold and the chips were awful. I once classed Smith's as one of the best Chippys in Shields and compared to over chippys more expensive so did not mind paying a bit more as it was the nicest but my god it hsd seriously gone down hill and after todays episode I will not be returning. Would also like to add if you are making this an online business for Just Eat etc then you have enough staff to manage the orders coming in online as well as serving customers in the shop as this could clearly not be managed and was evident the two members of staff could not keep up with basic orders within the shop nevermind online orders coming through to.

The fish was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, paired with thick, golden fries that were just as delightful. The flavors were spot-on, and the portion size was generous. A true taste of classic British goodness!"

Visited today, 1st time for a couple of months. Not as good as previous visits, seems to be going down hill.

Vile , avoid !! Went half hour ago to collect Cold when we got back I understand that , microwave at the ready , however was told half an hour , still waiting my partner said it’s all fresh in the fryer , so thought good ! Came back it’s rife , do you change your oil ? Chips were the worst I’ve ever had green and black , the fish ! One under done with a slimy underside and one overdone the batter was black , and the battered sausage in my sons meal needed resuscitating , simply awful in the bin , cheers .by the way zero

Hate to be bearer bad news but this is not smiths as ive known it most my life it has new owners and simply is not the same quality has nose dived and they simply try and compensate this by piling your box high but again its simply not quality at all , cant knock there effort but its a big no from me ill not be going back , watching the staff get a beanie out a freezer defrost it in microwave then deep fry it was rank and them squabble over wether the cremated chips should be left in the box or not is not what a customer wants to see

Fish and chips are the best and the staff is also very friendly. Must try chicken nuggets and their special sauces. I recommend everyone to visit there.

Never been but i own a photo and possible documents about the place from the 1930s including this photo (53 ocean rd, south sheildd John H Dean Taylors) a woman named Hilda Riche had this then gave it to my neighbour (my nan Carole) to me, thought il share it ❤️

Popped in here for a cheeky fish and chips dinner. Great entertaining service by the effervescent hebburn lass behind the counter. Large chunky chips, excellent battered fish. Great value for money. Better than Colmans.

Expensive for what you get. Sausage had obviously been sitting for a while and was dry and overdone.

I know you're not meant to say it, but I'll stick my neck out and say better than Colmans. They also don't act like they're doing you a favour allowing you to eat their chips.

Even the driver admitted how bad Justeat are with late deliveries. He said that's why so many people are moving to Uber. I want my money back !!!!!

Looked at me like I was mad when I asked if they did pineapple rings, had never heard of them apparently. No salt and vinegar, despite asking and being told it had been put on, mushy peas more like pea soup. Thought I’d try somewhere else because I don’t like Colman’s curry, but this place doesn’t do proper chip shop curry either. Large chips are anything but. Won’t be going back. I probably wouldn’t have said anything, but what’s the point of chip shop chips without salt and vinegar, complete waste of money.

Worst fish I’ve had in years. Chips burnt and mostly slivers of potato. Smiths has definitely went down hill since been taken over.

Went here as normal haunt of Colemans down the road was heaving on a sunny Bank Holiday Monday. Wasn't disappointed - less pricey than Colemans too!

Normally get good good from here. Don't know what happened this time. Maybe because we ordered as they were opening at 4pm. Fish was dry on the inside but batter (if you could call it batter) was soggy and practically burnt. (Like it had been cooked previously and heated through in a microwave). Chips were the same, reheated and soggy. Shame coz we do like this place for fish and chips.

Great food the chips were brilliant. Some of the best I have tasted in South Shields. Definitely recommend to anyone.
