The period between xmas and new year and fancied fish, chips and mushy peas. Queue wasn’t too big, plenty of chips but slightly disappointed with the thinness of the 2 pieces of fish. Not the best we’ve had.

Food and service are great, good prices. Serving hours are very limited though, hence 4*

I have used this Fish shop since being young and lived in the area. I now live further away in South Shields but have never changed my regular shop. Over the years these fish and chips have never wavered and are still as great as they ever were. I put these as best I have ever had

…. Down at the beach with the dog, thoughts turned to chips, so we stopped off at Green Lane fisheries (open 11am to 3pm Saturdays). Thinking of the dog and his love for fish we ended up with freshly cooked chips and 2 pieces of cod. Obviously people had similar ideas as the small shop was busy, with great service. No ‘batter’ was available but our meal for two plus one dog was lovely.

Staff are amazing and food is to die for. The fresh prawns and lobster are the best I've tasted, costing me a fortune! 🤣

First time I’ve been and it will be the last, two small fillets asked for large cod. Fillets batter was soft and stodgy, threw half in the bin - £8.80 wasted

This has been my local fish and chip spot for decades... in fact, it's been that way for as long as I can remember. It's kind of a tragedy that this isn't often mentioned in those "Best Fish and Chips of South Shields" lists, and rather it's overpriced and underwhelming places such as Colman's and the like that seem to get the limelight. Now, I'm not trying to slate Colman's at all here, I'm simply saying that I find Green Lane far superior to anywhere else I know of when it comes to fish and chips. I remember going here as a child with my parents (I'm in my mid-thirties now) and the place has never changed. It's old-fashioned, traditional, clean, warm and friendly. I visited recently and the manager handed a can of pop to a kid waiting in line just in front of me, which brought back fond memories of when he did the same to me back when I was a young'un. (I tried not to take offence that he no longer saw any such youthful charm behind my eyes, and thus I'd have to pay for my pop like normal.) That's the kind of stuff you don't see anymore, the warm and special treatment of what seems to be a bygone era. That really is great to see. In my experience, their food is always lovely, the portions are very generous, the value is unbeatable, and the staff are always friendly and actually look happy to be there. This, to me, comes as quite a shock to the system when you go to a lower standard place in the town centre, for comparison, perhaps to end a night of ale, and you see the pale, grim beings behind the counter, shovelling toenail clipping-style chips into paper with one hand while they roll a cigarette with the other, often shouting at each other in a type of undecipherable chippy code. Green Lane has it down pat, knowing what's best and keeping things the way they work best too. They're not fixing what isn't broken, they're not begging for followers on Instagram or for you to add them on Snapchat for 10% off your next order. They're just doing it right. I'm going to keep going back here when I want fish and chips, and if you're reading this, I advise you do the same! Well done everyone there for keeping it fresh and real all the time. All the best!

First time I've been in and always wanted to try and we did today and got to say the staff were excellent very friendly and like to have a laugh and the fish and chips were unreal thanks guys thoroughly enjoyed it

Stumbled across this chip shop from a clients recommendation, and I’ve got to say wow! The staff are extremely polite, friendly and great at what they do! The food is delicious! The fish and the chips both have great flavours! And you can tell how fresh the fish is! The prices are extremely reasonable! And amazing sized portions! Would strongly recommend if your in the area!

Quality still, a lovely way to warm up after a seafront walk (it’s not near the sea mind you). Fish and chips, batter and battered sausage. Hot, ready to eat, lovely. Covid rules in place so may have to queue outside if busy.

Glad the chippy is open during lockdown but we were unable to make a purchase as it is cash only. Why is it cash only? Seems suspicious in this day and age , and an unnecessary risk for me and my family.

I'm really fussy about takeaway and more often than not disappoint but not here. The BEST fish and chips I've had for a very long time. Beautifully cooked with fantastic fresh ingredients and a huge portion. Mushy peas and curry sauce to go with them served by lovely friendly staff. Cant wait to return!

Been a long time since I visited my old stomping ground in shields . Amazingly the staff recognised me !!! Don’t know if that was good or bad for the waistline 😂 Amazing haddock just as I remembered lovely chips and fantastic friendly service . I’ll be back and hopefully not be another 10 years .

I’ve always considered this place one of the greatest chippies in the north east, and last time I went I was massively disappointed, the fish was dry and the chips just weren’t up to normal standard, I took it on the chin and put it down to an “off” day.Visited again today and got the sausage and chips, the sausage was a little overdone and the chips again were over greasy and again well below their standard.Sadly, I’ll not return.

The manager, his wife and staff always take time to welcome you no matter how busy the fish shop is. This is an old fashioned shop with fishing memorabilia and art all over the walls. If you want something other than cod they will always try and get it for you. Couldn’t fault our supper tonight, fish bites and chips, cheese Pattie and chips and gravy and the obligatory ‘batter’.

Quality fish and chip are to be had here. There are various options apatr from the traditional fish and chips but you would need to check for availability as some are weather dependant. Portions are really generous . The staff are first class and the owner and his son always have a chat with you in the queue.Definitely worth a visit.

This fish shop is amazing the owners run it in a truly professional way and are totally hand's on and very friendly. The staff are imaculate dressed uniform and serve efficently and make a great team There is always a good selection of different fish which is freshly cooked. My personal favourite is Skate or Lemon Sole and is quality and always beautifully Cooked and presented

We are so lucky to have 2 of the best chip shops within a few miles of each other. I can't decide which is best between green lane and Daniella's in east boldon.The staff here are so friendly, polite and welcoming and if I go in with my daughter they always give her a free bottle or can of pop.The portions are very large even if you ask for a small and the food is very nice. Top marks!

I have used Green And Chippy now on and off for over 30 years. Brian and David are always welcoming and the staff are very good . You can not beat there standards always excellent. There are other Chippy in South Shields but none as good as here in my opinion.

As a lifetime commercial fisherman in the North Sea I do know quality fish and this is exactly what you get here at a reasonable price. If this shop was in the town centre you would. Not get near.Too many of our fish and chip shops use skinned Icelandic frozen cod for convenience and call it fresh local fish which it is definitely not. I do know this shop buys its fish from North Shields fish Quay which is one of our premier fresh fish ports on the North east coast . We use this shop as a family at least once a week

Go to this fish shop a lot it is nice and clean and the staff are nice some times there is a queue because it is always busy

Great service, excellent choices of different fish, great value portions and the tastiest batter combine to make this the best in South Shields. Forget the sea front chip shops, although decent they can't touch this place (or should that be plaice). Legendary in the town don't miss out.

Excellent fish and chip shop. Very friendly service and superb fish. I recommend the sweet William. They also do skate as well as the lemon sole, cod and haddock. A portion of fish often consists of two or even three fillets.

For years this has been a favourite of the whole family for a treat. The shop is small and covered with fishing memorabilia and Nik naks and the staff and owners are always smiling and welcoming. The fish of which you can choose many different types is always fresh and delicious along with chips and batter. Curry sauce, mushy peas and gravy are also available along with the likes of fish cakes, cheese patties, sausage, chicken nuggets etc. It is always warm and cheers us up despite the weather outside.

I was introduced to this fish and chip shop by friends who live in the area and have to say that I agree with them, it is hands down the best fish and chip shop. The staff are very friendly, portions generous and prices very reasonable. If you go on Good Friday, the queue is out of the door and a fair way down the street so don't think I'm the only one to have been told about this fantastic place. It really lives up to its' reputation.

After having an absolute nightmare last night on my way back from work the staff were absolutely amazing to make sure I didn't get in trouble with the Mrs! I placed an order for 2 lots of fish and chips to be collected 10 minutes before closing time, due to traffic from work I arrived just after closing time, however, the staff still kept my fish and chips to one side and helped me out massively due to being an absolute donut!As always, the fish and chips was amazing and lovely and piping hot!Really nice chippy!

chips very thin and greasey, service poor not very good parking faciliteys yellow lines out side shop makes it hard to get to .also you get very thin and small fish which I cannot abide. the fish seems as if it,s been out of the hot fat and standing a while they do not put the fish in for you when you order like a lot of good fish shops do
