Seafood platter was lovely, shared between two people. I will definitely be returning.

Lovely food, especially the oysters. Would definitely go back. Service was good & staff were extremely attentive & polite & friendly. The portions are generous too, we couldn’t eat all our mains .

We have been many times and service and food always excellent. While they can't currently cater for gluten free they were very professional and understanding at our most recent visit when they apologised for not being able to guarantee that one of our parties meal would be free from gluten. We erred on the side of caution and decided to go elsewhere however the staff could not have been more helpful.

Best fish and chips in South Shields

Lovely fresh fish dishes, and great fish and chips. The view and staff are great.

Ask for large fish look at photo this is a average fish not large poor value for money chips average better in North shields by a country mile

Went with a couple of friends. Food was delicious, a little pricey for fish and chips but worth the extra money in my opinion. Food was cooked perfectly, service was quick and polite. A place I plan to visit again

Visit us after making a reservation. Although it is a seafood restaurant, the smell was unpleasant at first. In Japan, it's the smell of the seafood section at the supermarket. The floor is oily and slippery so be careful. All the dishes are delicious and the portions are enough to satisfy even men. Even though I had made a reservation and it wasn't closing time, I felt a strong urge to leave early and left early.

I hope the management read their reviews? It's the second time I've been disappointed. The fish was covered in greasy soft batter that tasted awful. Either stop what you're doing or change your staff. £48.00 for two.

Fabulous food and location especially on a sunny day or early evening as the view out to sea is lovely. The staff were all very friendly and the service was excellent. The only minor issue is that the sound quality is not good. Think it could be because of the shape of the building. This would definitely not put me off going again

We dined here on Saturday and while the food was really good, there were a few issues. Overall the food and service were good, except that it felt very, very rushed. We were repeatedly asked if we were finished with our food, so that even if you put your cutlery down for a second to rest they were jumping on you wanting to clear away. I ended up just letting them take my main away when I wasn't finished - not great when spending £30 on a main! My wine was also taken away before I was finished and desert was taken about five minutes after it was served. We spent over £100 on a meal for two and were in and out in about 90 minutes, just not what you want for a special date night. Like I say food was great, staff were friendly but the fact we felt so rushed just put a bit of a downer on our evening so we wouldn't rush back. Can't fault the food, but being rushed out just doesn't make you feel like a valued customer but more like you're on a conveyor belt and they just want the next person in!

*A Religious Experience: Colman’s Seafood Temple, South Shields* I decided to set off on pilgrimage over to South Shields recently. My previous experience of this seaside town was the biblical flooding post-Great North Run of 2023 AD. Little did I know it was also the Mecca of Fish & Chips. I was warmly welcomed by the apostles of seafood, otherwise known as staff. As a fundamentalist, I opted for the cod supper, with mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce (none of the heathen stuff out of the squeezie packet). Cooked to order, and shortly after being anointed with salt and vinegar, I had my sustenance in hand within 8 minutes. The cod was like heavenly manna, chunky and caressed around angelic batter. The chips were sublime, comprising an unearthly inner softness encased within a crispy halo. The mushy peas completed the trinity; vitality emanating from their green hue. The refreshing homemade tartar sauce lifted the whole experience to ethereal heights. Bright and beautiful; the balance of mayonnaise, chopped capers, pickles, lemon and herbs was utterly divine. A real revelation for my taste buds, and no greater testament to a higher being. Amen to that.

Nice ambience. Good view. Friendly stall. I ordered half lobster. I had a quarter flesh, not impressed as it was pricey. My other half had fish curry that was well presented and was delicious.

Haddock and chips with a carton of curry sauce was once again delicous. Consistently good quality, staff are effecient and very friendly.

We had Cod, Scampi , Salmon, and Muscles, and it was delicious. Will definitely be back.

Had Fish and Chips and Traditional taco for lunch, my third visit and was lovely again today.

The food is absolutely delicious! We decided to get the hot seafood platter, and it did not disappoint! The view of the sea from the inside is beautiful. The service was all around great. I would highly recommend this place for a nice dinner!

Fabulous fresh fish, mollusc allergy ruled out a lot of menu, due to sauces and shared frier, but grilled prawns & grilled fish were superb.

Been here many times now, probably the best fish and chips I've ever had and everything else on the menu is excellent. In a great location and atmospheric building. Good service and friendly staff as well. Just remember that tips can only be paid in cash.

We just had a sneaky portion of chips to take away whilst a the beach for a walk. Nicest I've had in a long time, not greasy but not at all dry. We'll be back.

Lovely place to celebrate a birthday.

We arrived at just after half past 7 for my birthday meal. From the outset it was obvious that the staff did not want us to stay long - we were told we would need to order immediately after arriving. The food was lovely but I'd recommend going on a weekend in Summer when they might be more accommodating! I would highly recommend the scallops and suggest that you don't need sides as the mains are a very good size!

Having been brought up in the Mediterranean and in Africa areas, I reckon I know about seafood, but my first, and defnitely NOT my last, visit to Colmans seafood Temple, resrored my belief that all in NOT lost in this country seafood-wise, and that there ARE restaurants worthy of the name....unfortunately, exceptionally few... Along with exemplary service, patient and helpful advice, and a generally friendly, relaxed atmosphere, comes the tour-de-force of their fabulous, mouth-wateringly tasty menu! And what a veritable feast it was! Had an important family get-together to celebrate my grand-daughter's graduation, and the whole experience was absolutely superb and memorable. Thank you!...Will most assuredly try to find more events to celebrate in this way! A BIG BRAVO to all involved!

Qwolity not there for the second time

Sat outside on the benches which was lovely, be warned if you do this you’ll have some birds who make friends with you looking for scraps. Had fish and chips which was cooked to perfection.

Had large cod×chips portion was reasonable but not what i would call large more regular in my opinion could not fault service or quality nice white chunks of tasty fish chips crisp and tasty mushy peas were spot on

Fresh Oysters with a dressing of your choice are followed by the classic Battered Cod and chips with mushy peas. Beware, as it is a Temple, it can get quite echoey. The Colman difference is fresh fish cooked simply and possibly some secret ingredients in their batter.

ordered a hot seafood platter for 3, a prawn taco and mussels. The prawn taco is great. The mussels, i found a few undercooked mussels. On the seafood platter, most are good but again there are a few more of the undercooked mussels and one i have to spit out because of a bad smell. I mentioned this to a waiter who came to clear out table at the end. For over £110 food, well I don't think i will be back anytime soon.

Lovely setting and great food. Staff were very friendly and accommodating with the children. We had Mussels which were great, and humongous! Malaysian fish curry was really tasty too with a nice kick.

Takeaway fish and chips - perhaps not the cheapest, but delicious! Fast service.

First visit with family. Nice venue, food all fresh and well cooked. The seafood platter was filling and tasty. Good service. Only thing missing on the platter would be a couple of dipping sauces. Will be back again

Fresh Sea Foods and Good Sea Views

My wife and I had the most amazing anniversary lunch here. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and they had all signed a card which was a really nice touch. Fish a chips are the best I have ever had and the views were perfect. Overall all a very classy place, wonderful experience, and excellent food. We will definitely be coming back again. I would highly recommend.

We arrived yesterday hadn't booked a table but we were shown to a table in the bar. My son is in a wheelchair and facilities are very good lift to restaurant which was very accessible. The staff were all very nice and service was very good not long to wait . We will definitely return

Having a gluten intolerance l opted for baked sea bass and new potatoes l found service first class!

No need for blasting music at us, suggest a more relaxing theme would suit the clientele. My option of going for the scampi was definitely a mistake, I've tasted much better from Aldi and Lidl, should have stuck with the cod fish.

We had a take away. Queues were massive (we joined 4th from the front and they just got bigger and bigger behind us) and it did take a long time to get served but the food was definitely worth it.

Really good seafood restaurant right off the beach. Food quality very good, as is the service. A bit pricey but it's nice food in a prime location. May advise to book ahead as the restaurant area was full, but they were able to seat us in the bar.

Couldn't fault the place at all?! food was lovely, 1/2 lobster n chips 20 quid was very reasonable, only have 4 stars for atmosphere as well were In the bar( which was quiet) as no tables free ! I will be back for more of the menu !

Started with Souffle Arnold Bennett with Gruyere cheese and Parmisan, absolutely out of this world. Then small portion of fish and chips, the fish was sooo fresh and the batter was gorgeous. Then shared Minchellas 3 x ice cream. Car Parking was bad and restaurant was very loud. I didn't care as the meal was delicious and of course my lovely companions x

Amazing sea food, I had lobster as you don't often get the chance, it was good, we saw dolphins swimming in the bay as well, it was pretty lovely. Staff very accommodating, about what you would expect to pay in a restaurant of this standard. Parking can be difficult to get a space outside so we just go straight to the overflow. This place is beautiful!! We've been looking for a good, local seafood restaurant for a while now, and Colmans did not disappoint!! Wow!! Exquisite seafood served with the backdrop of the sea! Who could ask for more?! 5 stars all round!!

Great staff and fantastic food and cocktails. Very smart and modern location with great views and handy council car park near by. Spotlessly clean. An all round great experience. When booking on line double check the have received your booking as we have had problems a couple of times. Update 16/9/23; all the above comments about food & staff remain relevant. Staff are brilliant & there's a great bar/cocktail area too. Great atmosphere but it can get a bit noisy at times, probably due to the modern hard surface decor bouncing sound around & a/c can be a bit too cool sometimes. Highly recommended this place for a special occasion or just for an everyday eat out opportunity. But, it is popular so either book or be prepared to wait - more than worth a wait, and there is always that cocktail bar!! UPDATE; 23/02/2024, All of the above remains true & accurate. Another shout out to the staff who are amazing & food is of the highest standard.

My 2nd visit. Fresh catch of the day are amazing- had 1/2 lobster and roast seabass. Chils delish. Great views of the sea (not all tables), recommend the sticky toff pud. Could do with more choices of draft beer- only had Moretti. Book early!

What more can you say about Colman's that hasn't already been said. Outstanding traditional fish and chips (battered cod) but also do a great cod in garlic butter with capers along with many other fantastic fish dishes. It's won many national awards for good reason.

Got a takeaway of fish and chips, mushy peas and curry sauce. You'll be hard pushed to find better fish and chips than Colemans. Absolutely delicious. The curry sauce is fabulous as well. If you're in South Shields you must visit. There's another Colemans on Ocean Road which is the original restaurant.

Lovely seafood restaurant. Lobster was perfect, mussels were lovely, crab salad was fresh. Sea bream was tasty. Lad at the circular bar was very friendly. Our wine came in an ice bucket, very nice.

Proper English seaside fish restaurant. Beautifully designed with excellent staff that friendly, helpful and smile (memo to young serving staff everywhere!) We had fish, chips and a beer. Top class! Recommended, don’t forget to book; this place gets busy.

Service and food outstanding, however desperately needs some sound deadening to soften the hubbub on busier days. The noise levels spoil what could be fantastic.

Had the takeout fish and chips. I've eaten here a couple of times and easily the best I've had outside of the north Yorkshire coastline. Fish batter is very crispy, and chops cooked perfectly. Same with the scampi. I recommend trying the mushy pea fritters too 👌

This is for the chip shop under the restaurant, chips poor waited 40 minutes in a queue but had had the chips a few weeks earlier and were lovely so crispy probably best we had had! so didn’t mind waiting. Chips limp greasy not enough salt and vinegar as they don’t let you put your own on. Sausage average, fish was nice I was told. Cans of drink warm . Very disappointing.

Graduation lunch yesterday. The food was fantastic, and lots of choices of beautiful fresh fish and shellfish. Varied and different ways of cooking a variety of different fish, as well as the traditional haddock, Cod and Scampi. The prices were extremely competitive given the beautiful location and ambience of the restaurant. The staff were professional, attentive and informative about the different items on the menu. If you’re in South Shields, this is a fantastic choice for seafood fans!

We visited on a midweek afternoon did not book but they managed to fit us in, first impression the place looks very nice great location with excellent views. We ordered fish and chips for two we probably waited about 30 minutes for our food to arrive it was nice but if I am honest nothing special the fish in my opinion was quite thin (Cod ) but nice, what you do notice is due to the design on the building it is quite noisy. Would I return, not sure possibly, would I recommend yes it's a nice place if only for the location.

Excellent service. Fish beautiful. Chips leave a lot to be desired. My first couple of visits they weren't good,then they improved. The last couple of visits the were dry and Lots of marks on them.

1st time here, the waitress who served was polite and informed us that the curry sauce we ordered was large and one would do both of us but we decided on ordering two and she said if we didn't Finnish the curry she could pack it up for us to take home which we did
