Ocean Pearl in South Tyneside

Ordered a crispy beef and it was horrific, massive congealed bits of lumps of beef, in a weird sauce. Worst I've ever had. In fairness to them, other meals I've had from there have been good.

Been going to Ocean Pearl for what must be 20 years or so now. Outstanding food every time with great portion sizes. Brain is a legend.

My partner Linda picked us a meal up last night. Disgusting she's gone there for over 40 years and never been disappointed. Chicken curry with chips and mushrooms. The mushrooms were none existent and the chips weren't fresh they had been warmed up God knows how long they had them but no wonder they gave us so many just to get rid of them. All went in the bin if we could have been bothered we would have took the whole sorry mess back. Total waste of money but a good customer gone who will never go back or recommend.

We had heard about great reviews about this takeaway, but sadly we were disappointed with our food as it lacked taste and frankly poor food. We had the special menu for 2 and threw most of it in the bin.

First and last time all went in bin discusting

If you’ve never been here, it’s a must. Brian’s ran this shop for years. Always a smile waiting for you when you come in the shop. Knows everyone by name even new customers, food is made to order. Not salty like other restaurants close by, reasonably priced too and the portions are massive!

My go to dish has always been Singapore fried Vermicelli, I had one here tonight for the first time. I was shocked, heavily salted to the point of not able to taste enything else, no spice no vegetables. Quite frankly the worst I have had in over 30 years. My wife could not eat hers, and had to cook something else.

It seems like their fried rice was overcooked and old - the rice was all bunched up and looked a bit orange although the egg seemed fine. Ribs were alright although I feel they were a bit too hard to bite into and had a higher ratio of bone-meat than most Chinese takeaways do, such as MasterChef.

Curry was appalling way too spicy and not enjoyable at all. i woke up this morning with explosive diarrhoea and this was the only thing that could of caused it. the chicken was hardly cooked at all and was pink in the middle and too hard on the outside.

The food is amazing, you can tell it’s top quality and they staff are very friendly and love to chat to you. I would highly recommend this place to everyone local.

Sorry to say this place has gone downhill terribly Brian is still the star but whoever is cooking needs the sack went last nite chips were terrible seemed like they were warmed up and my Singapore noodles had some very dodgy meat in it fat and chewy and awful my partner’s special chow mien just as bad never go back again tasty duck Stanhope road 10 times better sorry Brian sort it out m8

The food at the Ocean Pearl is excellent, but lets get on thing straight, It is NOT a restaurant, it is the best Chinese Take Away in south shields you will be very disappointed if you expect to have a sit in.

Seen a tiny red termite on the sheets of white paper just over the counter when I looked and it's put me off. Not been in about a yr now It's still about the best Chinese in town though just I don't eat it anymore

For those who don’t know, Brian, the owner of Ocean Pearl is a local legend. He runs the takeaway that is arguably the best in the town, including restaurants. When our son is home from Uni, or Christmas Eve treat, or any reason in between then we’ll turn to the Ocean Pearl. Tonight wasn’t a special occasion but we wanted the best, and despite me forgetting the extra mushrooms both the beef curry with extra curry sauce and the chicken salt and chilli pepper were excellent.

Brian offers a level of service 2nd to none. A true legend. No drop in standards since last review. We are never disappointed love it here and will keep returning to this local favourite. Everybody knows Brian and Brian knows everybody.

Always a friendly welcome .and always a very good meal. Highly recommended and wouldn't go anywhere else

I phoned for a take-away. I explained I didn't have a menu. I started by ordering a Wan Tun soup. He didn't understand what I was saying so I repeated it several times. Then I gave up and asked for a Hot and Sour Soup. He didn't understand that and told me to "come down" to the takeaway shop. Then he just hung up. So I phoned the Gold Lion takeaway. They were really helpful. The food arrived quickly and was delicious. It couldn't have been a more different experience to the Ocean Pearl.

Not visited in about 5 years… quality of food not what it used to be… honey/chilli beef could put ya nanas windows oot and make a honey bee puke and salt/chilli chips were suffering severe anaemia…And where the hell was Brian!?

Brian is The Man and his food has never been poor. Ever. It's cash only and no delivery but we come back cos we know he and the staff get it done without skimping anywhere.

Visiting from Scotland and Brian gave the most friendliest welcome into his shop. Knew all his customers by name even on the phone . Food was delicious and plentiful . If your in South Shields give Brian a visit you won’t be disappointed. 5 star

Our favourite place for Chinese cuisine, the food is lovely and Brian is so friendly😊. I do wish that they would add aromatic crispy duck to the menu though 😋

Ocean Peal is the best chinese in the northeast!!! Their food is absolutely gorgeous and always red hot!! Brian listens and you get exactly what you ask for!!! Items are never missed from your order!!! ocean pearl don’t deliver so if you want nice food you have to pick it up!!!! We always call to place our order and Brian's timing is perfect, he told me 10 mins and it was ready when i got there. Wow, no decent Chinese takeaway in Hebburn. Used to come here 20 years ago so travelled to give it a go. The food is amazing, fresh hot, had salt and pepper chicken, sweet and sour, ribs, curry sauce, rice, chips and prawn crackers. Unreal. Service really good, pre ordered and collected. They don’t accept debit or credit cards just cash 👌 👌👌

Having moved from down South to Jarrow i was struggling to find a Chinese Takeaway that both my wife and i both enjoyed , till i come across OceanPearl . Read several reviews and thought give it a try, well from quality to quantity it was spot on. My first visit it was pouring with rain and there was a Q, but that told me it would be worth the wait and it was. Meeting Brian was a bonus kind of old school with a modern twist. Thanks to you and your staff for a lovely meal.

Bit of a wait, but always busy at the weekend, excellent food

Despite having to queue in the rain for ages (covid rules) Brian’s iconic Ocean Pearl it was worth the wait. Never had a reason to complain about the meals or service here ever. Two Salt and chicken, noodles and chips with Chinese gravys and curry sauces. Been looking forward to it all day. Didn’t disappoint

Absolutely great food! This has been my local chinese takeaway for 25 years!! Everytime I buy a meal, whatever it may be, it tastes and looks the same. It may be a little bit more expensive than some, but the ingredients used are top quality and you get good portiom sizes......worth every penny. With these dishes, you know exactly what your getting. Find one you love and you'll not be disappointed. If there's an ingredient you want taking out/swapping, for example your allergic to something i.e. chicken instead of prawns, no problem, just ask. Brian, who takes the orders is a proper character! He's a brilliant person who will welcome you with a smile and his usual sense of humour. The regular customers, like myself, he knows by their 1st names and I've tried ALL the other local takeaways, but no-one has the same quality or consistent taste like Ocean Pearl Chinese Takeaway. Give it a try, I'd be surprised if you didn't like it!

What can I say about here? From owner and local legend Brian to the amazing food the place can not be faulted. Wouldn't go anywhere else

The food is outstanding. Brian makes one up for me that’s not on the menu. The size of the spare rib starters is massive you don’t need a main course. Even though it’s not close to us it’s well worth a drive and always service with a smile

I've used a Chinese in sunderland for over 20 year then tried here, lovely bloke, food is the best I've had, its safe to say this is my new local. Ps try the chicken in oyster sauce on crispy noodles 👌 they are to die for.

For many years we have had food from Ocean Pear. It never varies, consistently good and it is worth going just to see Brian organise the orders. Fabulous King prawn in batter with Sweet and Sour with fried rice and portion of fried noodles. 10 out of 10.

When they don't deliver and the place is still busy you know that everyone is going there because the standard of the food, you also could not meet a more nicer person than Brian. Five star just isn't enough.

Absolutely excellent take-away. Food is fantastic and the owner, Brian is an iconic leader in the field of customer service. Will DEFINITELY be back. What a great experience.......

Brian is a legend and still knew my name after about 5 years of not going I work in a Chinese takeaway myself (why I haven't been for so long) and sorry to say nothing was as good as where I work 😣 sorry but this place is over rated and if the main man ever leaves it will lose trade very quick far better out there and expensive

Our favourite Chinese take away. Brian the owner knows every regular customer by name. If you go more than twice he will remember your name even if you phone. They don't deliver but service is excellent and the food is great.
