My go to fish and chip shop when in Lee. And the chips are gluten free

Looked through window to see a big sign saying cash only, went and got cash and went in to see a sign saying card only! Apparently one till is card and 1 cash, but confusing nonetheless. Possibly the worst chips I’ve had, lukewarm and all the end bits and pieces. Clearly been blanched and refried as all chewy, like deep fried cardboard. They went in the bin. In fairness the fish was nice, but that’s because it had to be freshly cooked in front of us. £19 for large chips, 1 fish, and cod bites, seemed pricey. Only went here because Karen’s Place was shut, will just go without next time.

First time visitor here. Greeted by friendly staff. Prices are what you’d expect these days. Both fish & chips were very tasty, with decent portion sizes. Happy to recommend.

Worst experience ever. I ordered 2 reg cod and reg chips. The fish was super oily and greasy with no taste or flavour as if you are eating fried battered unsalted butter. The chips were too salty even though I asked for less salt. For any mayo or ketchup sachet, you need to pay 50p. I asked for some after I got my order and I only had card and the guy said we do not do card for less than 5 quid and never even out of courtesy as I spent 20 quid already offered any for my kid. Worst than all of this, my family and I had stomach bug after eating this rubbish. Not recommended at allllllllll

The food is of an acceptable quality but at over £7 for regular cod which is in fact small, you can decide for yourself if that is value for money.

Best Fish and Chips in Lee on the Solent.

Have been a regular here for both dine-in and takeaway, however our last takeaway was disappointing. Standard portion of fish was half the previous size, cardboard box swimming in oil even the chips were an incredibly small portion. Will not be returning.

Worst chip shop I think I’ve probably ever been to, swimming in grease battered sausage more like soggy sausage, 🤢🤮 avoid! put me off chip shops altogether

Very disappointed, had 2 cod and one large chips The fish was lovely, the chips under cooked and cold, I'm sure you could do better When getting home you expect everything to be acceptable and enjoyable We usually use Karen's,where we haven't been disappointed

Service was good, I ordered large chips for two to share half with salt and vinegar and half without which they kindly separated into two boxes. Unfortunately the food wasn't great, chips were very dry and stale and the fish batter was soggy and mushy?? Not seen that before on fish. Disappointing

Just ordered and taken home 2 Reg cods, 6 chicken nuggets and a large portion of chips for £21.15 after standing in the high street and seeing the 2 chippys open. After looking at reviews I chose this shop based on the slightly higher reviews. I didn’t wait too long for the food and the service was ok. However I was handed 4 boxes without a bag. Little did I know all the food was swimming in grease in the boxes which saturated my daughter’s trousers on the way home. I’ve had to fairy liquid the two giant grease circles on each leg where the grease has run out the boxes on to her lap. Hoping that being quick and putting them in the wash will save them. The cod was lovely and cooked well but the batter was thick, the most greasy and soggy batter I’ve ever had (see the below photo of a complete box full of the batter off the 2 cod’s). Completely inedible- the chips were mediocre at best- very soggy, wafer thin and just not particularly enjoyable the chicken nuggets were reconstituted chicken bodies. Not breast chunks or like anything we’ve had from other shops. Completely disappointing and totally not worth the drive or money. Such a shame. Sadly I will not visit this place again and anyone wondering which shop to visit. Honestly I wouldn’t know as not tried Karen’s but will most definitely try them next time and hope the experience will be much better.

Took some of the residents from our care home for a walk along the beach and then to On the water for lunch. As it was 1145 they were unable to serve food so we made our way for fish and chips and found Smarts where the staff here were brilliant. Despite the sit down restaurant part not being open, they opened it for us and the food was excellent. They could not do enough for us.

Myself and my elderly client thought the fish and chips was absolutely delicious. Great size to share.

Best fish & chips etc for miles around. We travel 6 miles regularly to enjoy thier wonderful food on the beach with our Grandchildren Extensive menu and service with a smile.

Good phone service when I order gluten free food, good value and prompt service would recommend to everyone.

Smarts fish bar is in easy walking distance from the beach carpark. We were there in July 2021, parked at the western end where we ate our takeaways on the grassy area above the beach. Very nice fish and chips on that day from Smarts but had to pay cash so a search for an ATM needed. Sadly appears to have become variable with quality and service since, judging by other reviews. Never a good sign with so many great chippies around these days.

The very few actual edible chips (among the mass of grey and wafer thin dry slivers of what were once pieces of potatoes) were stone cold and not entirely fully cooked so really not very enjoyable at all. However, the fish was delicious and the batter was just perfect so this was definitely a meal of two-halves. This was my first visit to this chippy and sadly, no matter how good the fish itself was, the chips have ensured it will also be my last.

portion sizes for the price are an absolute joke

Went in restaurant bit around 5ish. Only people in there. It was absolutely freezing, no heating on! Told time to come take orders. Owners' children were there and were little nosiy. The food was good. Went to pay and asked for cash, so had to go and get some from Tesco, which was annoying

Had oap fish and chips today, fish was awful soggy cardboard box. chips ok but lots of bits. Found it very expensive compared to other places.

It's probably alright if you eat on the spot, but I had just a 10 minute drive home and the cod and chips had gone soft and soggy, although the fish itself was OK. Scampi was more like a white fish croquette with a little bit of scampi in it - not wholetail, which isn't acceptable if you call it "scampi" and charge £9! Calamari was nothing special - just bog standard processed, frozen rings. The owners from Madeira would never eat squid like that I bet! You're literally on the seafront so why not do it properly? It's not like squid is rare or expensive - I want tentacles LOL! A wedge of lemon wouldn't go amiss with everything either, for the cost. Pricey because of the location. Stick to the fish and chips and eat immediately is my recommendation.

Really disappointed with how much this chippy has deteriorated. Small portions, really greasy. I had an eyebrow lash and a hair in my chips, both jet black. My hair is auburn. Will not be returning

We ate in the restaurant bit. Noisy due to extraction fan. Then some toddlers arrived too!

We use the restaurant in the back although that is not always open. The food is quite good and reasonably priced by today's standards. Like a lot of chip shops, they could control part of the cost by reducing the portion of chips which is enormous.

We decided to eat in. Although they were very busy at the front of the shop, we didn't have to wait long before our order was taken by a friendly staff member. Not too long before our meal turned up either-a delicious plate of fish & chips, not greasy, just yummy.

Went there this evening and asked if the restaurant section was open. It wasn't but they turned on the lights, sat us down and we had a fantastic meal. The food was superb and the staff just couldn't have been friendlier. This is by far and away the best fish and chip shop in the area.

A real hidden gem. At Smarts they serve a variety of fish dishes and other meals at a fair price.

Spending the day at Lee on Solent as was so sunny and fancied fish and chips sitting on the sea front. Our gluten intolerant daughter said she’d just have a portion of chips as she can’t have the batter. What a surprise to see they had gluten free on the menu, and at virtually the same cost. Had to wait a little longer for it, but well worth it. Portions were enormous and quality was excellent! Some of the best fish and chips we’ve ever had! 😄

The best fish and chips shop around Lee on the Solent area. Always freshly fried fish with very thin, light and crisp batter.. very generous portions.. they make most delicious house salads.. Very clean and tidy place.. Staff is so polite, nice, attentive and professional. Simply I can not speak highly enough about this place, their service and first class food..

Very busy evening, no problem always happy to wait but - paid more for separate chips, paid for large cod & large sausage. Got a regular size cod (have been here a number of times before). Chips were underneath fish & not many even tho paid for separate chips so we could share. When I questioned it, she huffed & put the fish in a different box & gave it back. She didn’t add any chips & just said that’s it. I could’ve saved £1 straight away by ordering the fish & chips together then another £1 odd by sticking to regular fish. Feeling very disappointed by my £12 spend this evening :-(

Ordered fish and chips at midday today with high expectations, the fish was lovely however the chips were clearly reheated from yesterday, given the time of day there was no way they were cooked today. In any event we all know what reheated chips look and taste like. The whole experience was disappointing to say the least and as a result I actually feel cheated, I’m in no way a fussy eater and I seldom go on line to review anything, but there comes a time…..

We had stopped using Smarts as the quality didn’t seem to meet their usual standard. However, at lunchtime today they have proved that they are back to the high quality and standard as before. So glad our favourite chippy is back on top form.

We chose to have fish & chips here during the 2022 'Lea Beacon' which was probably the busiest day they had experienced for a very long while, if not ever. Whilst there was a short wait for our order to be cooked, the hard-working staff dealt with the numbers efficiently by using an call-order system. This worked well and we took our meal down to the (crowded) beach and thoroughly enjoyed it.

A real treat, having delicious fish and chips whilst gazing out over the Solent whilst having a few days away from our home in Leicestershire.

We have used this chippie for six years and have reviewed a d raved to friends and family about it. However, we have noticed the quality of the chips have slipped in the last couple of years. The final straw for us though was when we placed a large phone order for 8 members of the family.. Upon returning home we discovered that the order was quite wrong. The assistant had argued with our son, who collected, that we had ordered the Xtra large portion of chips and then found we had been charged for and received an extra portion of cod bites. This came to over £10. I think it's worse as we have been customers for so long. I have waited a few weeks to see if my annoyance would fade. But feel we were taken advantage of and will not use again.

Fish and chips great, shame stopped putting it in bags, you have to pay for one. Carrying hot food especially if mirecthman one portion not right. Should be part of service.

Ordered a small fish and chips, and a small portion of chips. And was greeted with a £10 bill, extortion at its finest. Not to mention the restaurant charges for everything under the sun, a sachet of ketchup is 20p, bag 10p, cheese £1.30.. Avoid at all costs, there are plenty of options nearby which won’t leave a dent in your wallet and provide sanitary food.. TLDR: DO NOT VISIT!

2nd time visiting Smarts fish and chip shop. Have to say they have the best cod and chips 😋 Not greasy, burnt, shrivelled up or hard. Soft and fluffy on the inside and just the right amount of crispness on the outside. The cod is of equal light crispness. Quite the opposite of the normal heavily battered fish. Definitely worth a visit ☺ Grab a bench to sit on and relax while watching the world go by at the seaside. Whilst munching on a delicious 🐡 n 🍿 n 🧋 😁👍

Visited yesterday for Gluten Free Fish and Chips. They were absolutely delicious and will be using them again. So good to find GF locally. Fresh cooked and then to the seafront to eat as the sun went down. How much better could it get!

I’ve been coming to Smart Fish Bar roughly monthly for the last 8 years. Initially it was a real find, great portions and quality fish with friendly service. However, in the last 5 or so visits they have got our order wrong 3 times, which due to the collection process, is not noticed until home. Not the end of the world and minor mistakes… but we’re only a family of 4, so shouldn’t be too difficult really?! This week though, was a new low, order wrong again but the piece of Cod was awful… tasted very strongly (never a good sign with fish!) and had some very disturbing dark bits; suffice to say and fortunately, it wasn’t finished! The chip portion was also 50% ‘bits’. For me this was the final straw. We look forward to our occasional Fish & Chip nights and have lost all confidence in Smart Bar… farewell! We’ll not be back….

I've been here several times recently and each time my fish cake and chips has been very enjoyable. Good portion sizes too .

We bought our tea from here and we were so very pleased we did so. My husband had fish and chips and I had a pea fritter(the best I've ever had ). The food was excellent value for money, it was cooked just right and tasted lovely. The staff were wearing masks and only one person was allowed in the shop at a time, which made us feel very safe in these uncertain times and they were friendly and helpful.

Portion size of chips a bit small, strange tasting vinager and the batter around the sausage was greasy.

Used to be so good but last week was quite disappointed ! I think owner or chef had been changed ;( shame (fish was so greasy) never happened before .

Lovely huge sausage and chips.. It was a very busy chippy. You put order in and go outside and wait to be called to collect your order. They also did batter less fish For my mate and sister who were with me..

On a day trip to Lee On Solent I popped in here for a take-away lunch. I have to say how lovely it was. Great value and freshly cooked by friendly staff.

Quick and efficient service, very good chips and quality fish. Staff are friendly and smile too, which is always a bonus!

Always so friendly, very quick service! Fantastic gluten free options available all week & at a very reasonable price for GF. The regular food is also lovely, it's never greasy (which many chippies are), and the family always really enjoys it. Highly recommend.

When I am always in lee-on-solent I use smarts fish bar great fish and chips are out of this world and not many fish and chips shops do the fish I like so I give them 10/10 keep it up

Just had fish and chips take away. Amazing!! chips were freshly cooked as was the fish. Not greasy at all. The curry sauce is by far the best I've had in a long time. This place is now out favourite by far👌

Stopped by for lunch here today, thinking they only did takeaway, but they have a few tables in the rear, all well spaced out and covid friendly. Not only that but the best cod, chips and mushy peas I have had in a long time. Excellent chippy!

Quality has plummeted to rock frozen, unfresh, over greasy and tasteless bottom. Change of staff or the current excuse of Covid aside, there are plenty of superior alternatives in Lee On The Solent.
