Our usual place we go for breakfast was closed. So, we decided to try some where new? Going to the Small talk Tea Room was our first time for me, my daughter & a friend. We were impressed with the lovely old Victorian photos, which we were told they had been donated by some family members. The whole decor was of victorian quaintness with lots of ornaments & cabinets with China. There was all size tables with old fastioned table cloths and different sizes chairs. And a relaxing atmosphere. Looking at the menu I was surprised there was a nice selection of breakfasts, but I was disappointed there was no fried bread or plum tomatoes. My daughter & me had full English breakfast and our friend had Benindict eggs with ham. I found my food warm and so did my daughter. The eggs were hard, a teaspoon of bake beans, a tea spoon of mushrooms, the hash brown undercooked, the one sausage was hard & felt like it was cooked the day before!! Bacon was fine and some of the toast wasn't toasted both sides. For £9.99 each was over priced. Our friend enjoyed his breakfast & couldn't fault it. I won't go back for breakfast nor will my daughter. The table server was friendly and spoke to us, but she was on her own and it got very busy. I do want to try the afternoon tea next & I will leave a honest review on that.

Well were to start we came in on 16th August hoping for a lovely, fresh & enjoyable meal and experience like we used to have in 2022 when we came often but instead what we got i wouldn’t serve to my pigs. We had a simple sandwich and a full english, the bread was stale and the sandwich filling tasted at least a week old, very vinegary, my friends full english was the worst full english i have seen, the eggs looked raw and burnt(how is that possible), beans luke warm and claggy, less than a spoonful of mushrooms and i can’t even say whether the bacon had touched a grill or pan! We thought about complaining but if a so called “chef” can mess up something as easy as a full english again and again then what is the point. It is such a shame that the food quality has become such a disaster as when we came previously in February the food was average but we gave them the benefit of the doubt, the waitresses were lovely and quick with the drinks and attentive, just a shame the food was a SHAMBLES! The only way we would ever return would be for a coffee or a cold drink or if there is a new lead chef.

We've visited a couple of times recently and found this place to be very good. It's larger than it appears and on one occasion we weren't surprised to see people queuing for the table. Decorated in the style of grandma's dining room, it offers more light, colour and personality than some other period venues. It's worth going to a more unfashionable part of Colchester to eat here. A good selection from the menu, plenty of teas and other beverages to choose from. Chelsea has been excellent in serving us, attentive, polite and charming. It may not suit some people that dishes aren't piled high with food - maybe the concentration is on better quality and if they need to do that to survive then it's fine by us - we don't always want to have supersized portions during the day. We will return if you'll have us.

Me and my partner are regular visitors to this hidden gem in the town centre, the decor makes me smile every time i walk through the doors and the staff are lovely and friendly. We tend to come on a monday afternoon and are trying to work our way through the menu as everything we have had has been superb, but this time we came on a wednesday afternoon around 1ish and the food was the complete opposite of what we are used too, my partners poached eggs were very undercooked and not pleasant to look at and as for my half english, the bacon looked unappealing and the hash browns were very soggy, not sure what happened to the beans as they were piled on top of everything else and the toast was burnt on one side, this visit hasn’t put us off returning to small talk but if a first time visitor was served that i don’t see them returning which would be a great shame. I highly recommend visiting on a monday as the food has always been of the highest calibre, maybe a wednesday is the usual chefs day off or training day for new staff. (If you love tea then you HAVE to visit)

I visited the cafe on Wednesday 11th Jan for a full english breakfast after being recommended by a friend and the food was much to be desired, the hash browns were soggy, eggs overdone, toast burnt and beans were slopped on top of everything, however i gave the cafe the benefit of the doubt as my friend wanted to go today 21st Jan and wow what a difference, crisp hash browns, perfectly cooked eggs, everything nicely presented on a warm plate. The only thing i can think is different chefs work different days?

Nice decor, friendly staff and nice well presented food. We had afternoon tea and were offered a complimentary drink on our arrival. We questioned this and were told that the tea was complimentary and the drinks we were offered were additional 😡

I popped into this tearoom with a friend for morning breakfast before shopping, and it was lovely. It is a nice quiet atmosphere, ideal interior for a tea room and the food was lovely. The staff were welcoming and the food was delivered quite quickly which was surprising. My sausage in my English breakfast was slightly pink, and out of precaution I did not eat it but the rest was delicious and my friend's breakfast which was eggs benedict looked lovely! A great place for a Saturday or Sunday breakfast if you want a calm atmosphere.

We have made this our go to cafe for tea since lockdowns shut our old haunt. To be honest, over all the time it's been here, I never realised that the place was so large because you can't see much through the windows because of the lace curtains and the china doll in the window was always a little off-putting. It is however friendly (though being greeted by staff wearing spit-shields isn't great PR - who are they afraid will be spitting?) The decor is cosy, the room is nicely spaced out. The range of teas is sizeable and very tasty and have some interesting names. We have enjoyed 'tea' foods and cakes but were disappointed by the bland, slightly undercooked sausage sandwiches. I recommend the 'Tears of the Dragon' and 'Madame Butterfly' teas - lovely!

Making our way to another cafe in Colchester there we were in Eld Lane and noticed somewhere we had not seen before despite being Colchester residents!Wasn’t that a fruit and veg business ..indeed we were told later that indeed it was , but the cafe had been there for sometime!!!Inside it seemed packed at just before 2.00 pm but upon entry the words from a smiling face says a table is being cleaned for you.She had charm , the place had charm , the menu was good, the wait for food was minimal given the number attending.A word to be said , quite often in cafes English tea can be, not warm enough let alone not hot enough .. the contents of our tea pot with its tea cosy was excellent. The light bite food of Turkey Cranberry Brie Baguette and Egg Mayo and Cress sandwiches were delightful .Congratulations to all involved and to our waitress Izabella.

My wife and I stopped off in Colchester on the way back from Southend-on-Sea, and as soon as we parked up we began looking for somewhere to have breakfast. We came across this tearoom as we were wandering around the back alleys of the town, and as soon as we looked in we knew that this was the place for us – it just looks so quaint and inviting that you want to go in to sample what was on offer. We were shown to a table immediately we walked through the front door by a charming waitress who had collected menus as she came to the door to greet us. The breakfast menu was quite extensive, as was the range of teas on offer, so it took us quite a while to choose, but this was absolutely no problem to the waitress that came to take our order. Once ordered both the teas and breakfasts were soon delivered to our table. The food and teas were both perfect and we were so glad that we had chosen to eat here. We went to take a selfie and immediately one of the waitresses came over to offer her services to take the photo for us – really nothing is too much trouble for the staff at this tearoom. Finally before we left we availed ourselves of the toilet, which was immaculate, so again full marks for that. I would highly recommend this place, and if you are ever in Colchester you really should pay it a visit, as the food and teas are awesome, and the prices are very fair.

The small talk probably refers to staff rather than the customers... Staff members from the kitchen kept coming upstairs and talking loudly with the waiting staff. The waiting staff themselves were unfriendly and inattentive to customer needs. They were very efficient cleaning up, to the point of disposing of a drink and food whilst the customer was using the bathroom. Moreover, the iced americano was sub standard. No frothed milk, just a milky coffee with some ice thrown in. Staff just plonked it on the table and left without enquiring about the order or checking if it was right. They also checked on or spoke to any customer to check their satisfaction with the drink or food quality. The sanitiser at the entrance had also run out and the dispenser broken...

Lovely tea room, surprisingly larger inside than it appears from the outside. Spacious table layout - unlike other cafes where the tables are shoe-horned in, there was plenty of room around each & every table. The food was great (we had a mix of toasties, baguettes & sandwiches between us and couldn't fault the meals- hot & tasty). Friendly & attentive staff. When we arrived, although the cafe was busy (always a good sign!), the staff member quickly cleared a table for us (next time will definitely book a table as it's so popular). Waited 15 minutes to be served, finally approached by an abrupt waitress who seemed annoyed that my friend wanted to change a couple of items on her breakfast. I ordered fish finger sandwich, expecting them to be homemade. Unfortunately when it turned up I could see immediately that they were frozen birdseye fish fingers. Not impressed by this, £5.50 for 3 and a half frozen fish fingers and no sign of the salad you're supposed to get with it. Stale crisps too. My friend's poached eggs were severely undercooked, the white was really clear and snotty. The waitress was very rude and kept slamming around when delivering our cutlery and when taking our plates, also couldn't get rid of us fast enough, she snatched our plates away as soon as we'd put the cutlery down. Not happy about the lack of service or the mediocre food.

We ambled into this tea room on a very hot morning. The interior is very traditional and quaint and I was anticipating a very good experience. however a few things let the experience down. We were told we could make up our own vegetarian breakfast. The lady left to service other people rather than wait on us and complete our order. We didnt eat eggs so we asked that to be replaced with avocado which it was nice they did as its rare for places to have this, as a substitute. They also offered gluten free toast which was a positive. The breakfast was their regular vegetarian set breakfast but we asked for avocado in place of the eggs - The rest came as was i.e. a vegetarian sausage which was not quorn but a wish mash of veg like bubble and squeak, 2 hash browns, beans, half a tomato and mushrooms and a pot of tea.

Set on one of the shopping lanes in Colchester this is a lovely old fashioned tea room with great food and lovely setting. The venue itself is decorated deintly with old fashioned table decor, pictures and ornaments. There is access for those with prams or wheel chairs and is suitable for all who want to enjoy a relaxing bite to eat whilst out and about. There is a fair amount of tables however it does get busy on weekends so pre book a table. During the week you are more likely to be able to get a table of you just walk in.

What a delightful place to relax and enjoy delicious food. We had a toasted bacon brie and cranberry sandwich which was served by very pleasant staff. We enjoyed the background music and the ambiance of a nostalgic bygone age. The place was spotless especially the toilets. Will recommend this gen to our friends.

Not far from our hotel so ideal for breakfast or lunch. A warm welcome awaits. We loved the ambiance, it took us back some years to the time when tea came in a teapot complete with cozy. Plenty to pick from the menu, all well prepared and very tasty. I recommend the steak and kidney pie. Treat yourself.

A wonderful discovery. Please go and support. Atmosphere, space, service, food all perfect. Well done to staff and the owner. Wish I had discovered earlier although the outside window disguises how big it is inside!

A traditional Tea Rooms, with table service, excellent choice of cakes, (well remembered by my waitress), plenty of drinks to choose from too. The setting is very good, a traditional location and a pleasure to visit. Prompt and efficient service.

We go here purely for the all day breakfast (Although I have had other stuff which is just as good). The quality of the food is 1st class, the quantity is spot on, and the staff are always chatty and lovely.

My friends and myself meet here every Friday and love the atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and work hard. Yes they get busy and you may have to wait but the food is made to order and is very good. Love the homemade soup especially in the winter

We went for lunch on Saturday and both opted for the ploughman’s. I’ve had bigger for a lower price but I understand they have to make a profit. Food was nice, lovely decor inside but the only downside was the service. The plates were delivered but with no cutlery of which the waitress said she’d come back with some. 10 minutes later we were still without cutlery. A young waitress served a table next to ours and as she walked away, gave a momentary glance to which I waved frantically but she walked back to her 3 workmates behind the counter and continued with their chatter. I then got up and walked to the counter to ask for cutlery which we received with no apology which I found not nice. After we had finished the ploughman’s each we fancied some of the lovely cakes they had on offer. To our dismay no one came to take our order so once again I had to get up to ask for service.

Found this tearoom and my word it’s like stepping back into your grandmothers living room. It was fascinating looking at all the old ornaments and decor that you saw as a child. We ordered sandwiches and I have to say they were excellent, I had Prawn and my friends had chicken. We had one fussy eater in our party and they were more than accommodating. The service is excellent, can’t wait to try the afternoon tea on our next visit as the cakes looked delicious

We stopped at the crown on our way back from Colchester for a drink asked on the off chance if there was a table for two available which there was sat outside in the sun and had a drink until service started the staff and waitresses were all very helpful and friendly. We both had the chicken livers in masala cream sauce to start followed by the Dover sole and a trio of lamb which were all excellent and not expensive well worth a visit.

Stayed on Mersea Island for a few days with friends for birthday celebration and was looking for somewhere to go for afternoon tea. Found The Gilt Rooms on Tripadvisor and decided to give it a go. We had to book for the afternoon tea but wow so worth it. Everything from the freshly made sandwiches to the warm fresh out of the oven scones and home bakes cakes (chocolate eclair, victoria sandwich, lemon drizzle and choc brownie were amazing. All washed down with a perfectly chilled glass of prosecco and lashings of tea or coffee. It was the absolute best afternoon tea I've ever had and have had a few. Will definitely visit again when there.
