The Jam Jar Rowhedge is a really welcoming community hub where local people meet daily as well as people from outside of the village. There is cosy seating inside and an enclosed outside dog friendly space with heating. Tables in the courtyard also. Good food served all day by lovely staff and the best cup of coffee in Essex.

Popped in here for a coffee and piece of cake after a walk along the riverside walk from Colchester. Seems to be a good meeting place for locals, with the café, excellent recycling area and various craft workshops, as well as interesting potted history of the café and the surrounding streets. Not a massive choice but nice to sit in their outside covered area and down a cappuccino with a slice of flapjack. Good homemade fare.

My 5 friends and I were out walking today to Rowhedge with the intention of stopping for lunch at a pub along the riverside. As we walked towards a pub, one of our Ladies saw the sign for the Cafe 'Jam Jar', which is tucked away in a side street, so we decided to go there instead, and we were so glad that we did. We were not disappointed. The staff were absolutely lovely, nothing was too much trouble. As for the food, we all agreed that it was delicious. (I can personally recommend the Bacon and Brie sandwich which was served with Mango Chutney instead of the usual cranberry sauce, and as promised, the combo did work !!) Excellent pots of Tea and cups of coffee as well. On top of this, we found it excellent value for money. We sat outside in a pleasant little courtyard, in the sunshine enjoying our meals, it was lovely. Even before we left, we all agreed that we would be going back to this gem of a Cafe. 'Jam Jar' you definitely get our vote 👍👍.

The Jam Jar cafe is a sweet little place, its very small and although it was December we preferred to sit in the courtyard. I know it sounds silly but I was very impressed by the outside but ultra clean toilets which are big enough if you need to take a buggy inside for nappy changing. We often walk from Colchester to Rowhedge and its great to have somewhere to have a cuppa at the end of the walk. My only slight quibble was that there were no gluten free offerings at all. The cakes on offer looked amazing but I couldn't have any of them so had to watch my companions eating while I just had a cup of tea. It's great to hear that the cafe is now selling a few essential groceries while the local store is out of action.

Stayed on Mersea Island for a few days with friends for birthday celebration and was looking for somewhere to go for afternoon tea. Found The Gilt Rooms on Tripadvisor and decided to give it a go. We had to book for the afternoon tea but wow so worth it. Everything from the freshly made sandwiches to the warm fresh out of the oven scones and home bakes cakes (chocolate eclair, victoria sandwich, lemon drizzle and choc brownie were amazing. All washed down with a perfectly chilled glass of prosecco and lashings of tea or coffee. It was the absolute best afternoon tea I've ever had and have had a few. Will definitely visit again when there.
