Stayed on Mersea Island for a few days with friends for birthday celebration and was looking for somewhere to go for afternoon tea. Found The Gilt Rooms on Tripadvisor and decided to give it a go. We had to book for the afternoon tea but wow so worth it. Everything from the freshly made sandwiches to the warm fresh out of the oven scones and home bakes cakes (chocolate eclair, victoria sandwich, lemon drizzle and choc brownie were amazing. All washed down with a perfectly chilled glass of prosecco and lashings of tea or coffee. It was the absolute best afternoon tea I've ever had and have had a few. Will definitely visit again when there.

The Gilt Rooms was superb. We hosted a large birthday party of 50 there in early May, it could not have been a better venue. The food was of the highest quality, range vast for all different tastes, birthday boxes for children a great hit, food presentation was first rate, the service always attentive, the accommodation just right. It was excellent value and would have cost a lot more had it been held elsewhere. Highly recommended for a birthday party or similar event. Always good for lunch. Food again of the highest order and freshly prepared with care and attention. Lot of detail given so a a first rate lunch, and morning or afternoon venue. Highly recommended and written by one that has eaten extensively locally and elsewhere.

Expensive for what you get, wasn’t that impressed. Disappointed with the service.used to be good. Won’t go again

Family members threw me a wonderful baby shower. Marvellous place to celebrate the occasion! Excellent staff and service as well as quality food and drinks.

Popped in for a coffee , sat in the rear garden with our dog had two nice cups of coffee , and cake to take away . Lovely atmosphere and quiet out back , the gardens small but lovely little sun trap .

Beautiful little place to grab a bite to eat! The menu was great (love the American pancake options!). Dogs are allowed in the back courtyard which is decorated beautifully and was nice and peaceful away from the main road! Service was amazing - the ladies working there today were so lovely! Food was incredible and all cooked fresh on site which you could taste the difference! Perfect after a nice walk from the beach in to town..make the effort to head to these guys! Will be back to try more of this amazing menu and cake options 💗

A wonderful friends themed afternoon. The food definitely beats some of the what the large hotels offer in the area, it was truly spectacular and so well thought through in relation to the friends theme. The service was excellent, the young lady did a brilliant job of explaining the afternoon tea and what we had. She was also perfectly attentive.

We had Mother’s Day afternoon tea here and had a very disappointing experience with the service. As soon as we were arrived and shown to our table the young lady said we had from 2:30 and had to leave for 4pm for the next booking , she then reiterated this to us a few minutes later to us. Throughout our time here we were made to feel rushed for what is supposed to be a relaxing afternoon tea for our Mother’s Day :( The waitress kept checking if we were finished! It was also disappointing how when making the reservation I was told it would be £35 a person and this included a glass of Prosecco , however when we arrived we were told the Prosecco would be £5 a glass extra, the waitress checked with the manager and said that is the price and not sure who told you that, I tried to say to the waitress I was disappointed as this wasn’t what I was told and she just turned her back and cleared a table. The waitress also tried to move tables around us for a booking that was due after us then decided to wait until we were gone. When ordering our drinks I ordered a hot chocolate and originally got told this would cost extra but then they said I could have 1 included as I don’t drink tea or coffee , I’ve never had this problem at any other afternoon tea. The food was nice although just could have had a description for the opera cake as this was a coffee flavour which I didn’t realise until tasting and It’s not something I like. & the scones are the smallest I’ve ever had on an afternoon tea but the food was lovely overall. We expressed our dissatisfaction with the service to another staff member who was lovely and apologetic and gave us a voucher to use towards a future visit. Definitely would not recommend for Mother’s Day afternoon tea if your looking for a relaxing experience and lovely service!

We visited today and I can honestly say we had one of the nicest afternoon teas. The young girl who served us was very attentive and informative of what we were having. We had a room to ourselves which was very cosy and warm. The scones were gorgeous as too were all the cakes. I couldn’t manage all of mine and was able to take it home. Would definitely recommend.

Such a shame, no atmosphere, the room was very cold. £7 for a bacon and egg sandwich, for that price you would expect much more bacon and for it to be cooked how you requested it to be, also not a crappy catering sauce sachet. Disappointed would not recommend and won’t be returning

I’ve visited The Gilt Rooms on numerous occasions and when trying to think of a location for my dads 90th afternoon tea it was top of the list. We were able to have it as a private hire event and it was perfect. The afternoon tea that was provided was spectacular. The sandwiches were so fresh and the individual cakes beyond tasty. The mini scones with individual jam & cream were warm and amazing. Everyone that came commented that the sausage rolls were the best they had ever tasted! Tea & fresh coffee was regularly refreshed and served with the most gorgeous vintage crockery. All of the girls couldn’t do enough for us and no request was too much trouble (& trust me my mum is very particular about what she likes!) I can’t recommend The Gilt Rooms enough and now I’ve had the opportunity to have a private party here, it will be top of my list for any future little get togethers.

What an absolutely amazing Afternoon Tea delivered to our front door by the lovely Rosie. The quality of the food was exceptional along with some of the best scones I’ve ever tasted. Great value for money and can highly recommend during lockdown.

Just moved to mersea, hadn't had a chance to visit the place before lockdown, found out they did home delivery, great, from a phone call to Rosie to delivery was handled superbly.The food was excellent and more then enough for 2 people. We had the Sunday roast, meat tender and flavorful, even managed to offer GF for the wife.Would highly recommend and can't wait until we can actually visit the place.Carry on with the good work.

Wow! Such friendly staff and made to feel very welcome. We had a table in a room to ourselves which suited us brilliantly, so no worries about distancing. The room was beautiful, very well decorated. It was a chilly day and an oil radiator was plugged in next to us in case we got cold.Menu choice was great, lunch or breakfast at 1pm. We opted for toasted sandwiches which came with coleslaw, salad and crisps. Lovely! In fact we both left some so we had room to try the delightful cakes on display, and again, were not let down. We loved our first visit. We had the best customer service and such an amazing breakfast of pancakes and French toast with a lovely cappuccino!! The portions are huge and they are the most generous with the maple syrup. They have outside seating in the front or the back garden(super cute) perfect if you have a dog like us. We were also offered a dog bowl for our Newton. Really happy with everything especially with the food that tasted fresh and so yummy!!

Wanted a full English breakfast in the Colchester area so we had a quick look on Trip Advisor for one that fitted the bill. This one met our requirements so we made a quick booking. Breakfast served until 11:30 which was perfect. Staff were very friendly and attentive despite a couple of larger groups in. A choice of white or granary toast and how you want your eggs. The breakfast was exactly what we had wanted, perfectly cooked and very tasty. Will definitely be back again.

Having a static caravan in East Mersea, we are always on the lookout for somewhere to eat, with breakfast being our favourite meal outDoing some shopping in Tesco we spotted The Gilt Rooms across the roadWe phoned ahead and booked a table for the following morning, and when we arrived slightly early our table was already set up and readyWe both ordered the full English breakfast however there are a number of really lovely choices on the menu, enough to suit most palates without being overwhelmingThe food was freshly prepared, and came out piping hot, and looked amazingMy wife's bacon was slightly overdone, but that's how she likes it, so no complaints however the server came over halfway through and gave us 2 more slices, saying that they realised it was slightly over cooked so they thought they'd bring some more out All in all, a lovely meal, friendly and efficient service, would highly recommend and will definitely return the next time we are at our caravan

Not sure if we just hit the Gilt Rooms on a bad day.First the good- the staff were really friendly and welcoming. It’s a really nice space - we sat outside at the back. The food was good.However, it took an awfully long time to arrive. They didn’t seem to be overly busy and we were warned the food might take 30 mins - in reality this turned out to be 45 mins - way too long to wait for a couple of skewers and chips.

Come here often and service and food are always fab! They can’t do enough for you. So glad they are back open, best Full English on Mersea!

Excellent food and service. My family and I have been for breakfast a number of times now at the gilt rooms, food and service has always been at the top of the game. We are not local to the area but when we do get a chance to come to Mersea we always make an effort to stop off at this hidden gem.

We have just had our Covid 19 delivery of lamb moussaka and it was scrummalicious. Thank you do much for a delicious treat. We now have the lamb tagine to look forward to which is in the freezer.

We went to use a groupon voucherfor breakfast and prosecco and found the whole experience to be brilliant.The Chef is very attentitive and friendly, the food was excellent and locally sourced and the restuarant is light and airy.We both had the English breakfast and it was superb! Only thing I would have liked was plum tomatoes, but thats just me!All in all, I would thoroughly recommend this and will be returning.....I spied the cakes (which are all homemade and are huge )

Had the Prosecco afternoon tea and it was well worth the money. Sandwiches had tons of filling, good ingredients and the cakes and scones were lovely. Very friendly waitress that took the time to explain what cakes and sandwiches we had. Yum!

We visited about 3.30pm on a Saturday..(note, despite stating on trip advisor that this tea room is open until 5.30pm it actually closes at 4.30pm) ...on the basis of the reviews, I admit I had high expectations of the food & the service; unfortunately the Gilt Rooms failed to deliver .. the service wasn’t friendly (may be it was late on in the day & they just wanted to close up & go home)? ... we were not made to feel particularly welcome .. initially it felt more like we were an inconvenience :( ... would it have killed them to smile ... the food was nice enough & quite expensive given the portion sizes were small .. disappointing :(

Lovely afternoon tea with with hubby. Cute venue with friendly staff . The room where afternoon tea was served was quite small but would be lovely for intimate baby shower / birthday tea of up to about 8 people , however there were people having tea in the main cafe . Paid 30 pounds for 2 on group on for a Prosecco afternoon which was reasonable , would definitely not be worth the full price of 25 pounds per person . Plus points the best lemon drizzle cake and macaroons I’ve tasted in a while and you were able to substitute the glass of Prosecco with a soft drink alternative Could improve the sandwiches by getting bakers bread . Now I must confess I am fussy with regards to afternoon tea, all in all a pleasant trip. definitely worth a visit if you are local .

What a friendly place, I’d booked for afternoon tea the day before and on arrival we were promised a treat. The ladies weren’t lying, from the initial here’s your seat to our departure they were help itself.The food was brilliant, the cakes are to die for and the choice of teas was staggering, I had the mint chocolate rooibos and liked it so much bought a pack to take home.We couldn’t finish everything so they put what was left in a box.Can not recommend The Gilt Rooms highly enough and we’ll certainly be back.

I booked the Bottomless Prosecco brunch as a treat for the beginning of my daughters 40th birthday celebrations. From the minute we walked in to the Gilt Rooms we were impressed with the decor & the friendliness of the staff. The pastries were delicious and the ones we didn’t eat were wrapped up to take home. The freshly cooked brunch was excellent and our glasses were kept topped up. I would highly recommend The Gilt Rooms & I have booked the cream tea as it looked fantastic.

We were made to feel very welcome and shown to a room with about 5 tables, all set out with bone China cups and saucers and flowers on the table. Our large (free refills) cafetière of coffee arrived with our large flutes of very nice Prosecco, followed by a table display with a variety of sandwiches and cakes. We had two cream cakes each along with a very, very tasty lemon drizzle cake. It was melt-in-the mouth delicious. There was another small, interesting cake and two scones with jam and cream arrived just as we felt we were full to bursting. Any uneaten items are boxed up for you to take home but I can proudly say we ate everything! There was a huge variety of teas on offer too. I tried the mint and chocolate one. It was a delightful experience and I would recommend it highly!

Came to this wonderful little tea room with my boyfriend on a sunny Friday afternoon and had the “halfternoon” tea which was plentiful and so delicious. We had a choice from the menu of a sandwich, cake and tea which was served beautifully on a two tiered stand. For our sandwiches we had smoked salmon and cream cheese and Brie and cranberry, for our cakes we had a Victoria sponge and a coffee and walnut. Everything was homemade but the best of all were the freshly made scones!! They were to die for!! Service was warm, welcoming and friendly. Would 100% recommend this place to anyone who is visiting mersea island.

A luscious afternoon tea , great choice of sandwiches and cakes presented with flair on a two teered serving tray. Good service and helpful owner served us and was very chatty and full of local knowledge. Good choice of teas to try. Scones and cream delicious and with a glass of proseco what great value for money.

I made two visits here within a week, once with my sister-in-law, and then with my son and family - visiting from the Netherlands - and our 'Mersea family.' My daughter-in-law is a wheelchair user, and we also had our granddaughter's pushchair. Access was very good, and we were all able to enjoy the lovely courtyard garden at the back. The food was excellent, including the children's 'picnic bags', and very reasonably priced. VERY friendly staff, including Rosie, the owner. Nicely laid out garden furniture outside, and comfortable inside also. Definitely a place to visit often.

Me and my friend went here with a groupon voucher. Parking outside. Walked very regal and beautifully done. Weather was nice so went outside. We had bubbly bit neithe of us drink so we got offered a soft drink instead. And I'm not a tea drinker so got a coffee also. The selection of cakes and sandwiches come out. Egg mayo ham mustard cheese and pickle and a cream cheese and cucumber sandwich. Sponge cake . Lemon drizzle. chocolate éclair. And a macaroon. All sparkly and beautiful. When yiu think your full they bring out the scones. Well played well layed out. Beautiful would go again x

Went with an elderly friend for afternoon tea, after a journey that took forever thanks to sat-nav. We could have walked there quicker, but it is very pretty countryside. So we were 30 minutes late for our booking, no problem, we were made welcome and showed to our seat. They even sorted out my parking space! The actual tea was lovely, a selection of finger sandwiches and cakes enough to satisfy the greediest diner. Plus a scone with jam, cream and butter for those who aren’t fans of cream. There is a bottomless teapot pot and one of the house specialties is a huge selection of teas. Now I know where it is and how to get there I shall go again.

Me and my sister bought a sparkling afternoon tea voucher for our mum and her mother-in-law for Mother's Day. We eventually got round to using it last weekend. We have done all the top afternoon teas in London so we know a good afternoon tea when we see one!

My husband and I were lucky to be given an sparkling afternoon tea at the Gilt Rooms as a gift and we visited on 7.5.19. It was a wonderful afternoon, from the beautiful vintage china to the scrumptious cakes we can not fault it. I am a vegetarian and the veggie sandwiches were the best fillings I have ever had. The service was warm and friendly and the portion sizes just right, not too much but left us feeling nicely full. I stumbled upon this beautiful tea room as we were driving through. It looks lovely from the outside but when you get inside's even better. Clean, tidy, lovely atmosphere. A pleasant young lady served us. Nicely attentive and informative. Then I went to the bathroom and wow. Even that was beautifully deorated. How can a decorative loo be so inviting!!!!

We had a voucher from Groupon £30 for Sparkling Afternoon Rea. We booked for Tuesday 16th April in the afternoon. The staff are very friendly and polite. Nothing is too much bother. We asked to change table and hubby wanted a beer instead of Prosecco, no problem. The food is so beautifully presented and the vintage chinaware makes it all feel so special. All home made and you know it’s not been sitting around for ages. Delicious. Gorgeous selection. Allow about 2 hours to really enjoy the experience. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wonderful tea room. Spotlessly clean. Tea was scrummy. The young lady proprietor is a true inspiration. The young lady who greeted us was so so polite. Huge congrats. We will definitely be back.

as i said i've been serching for the name of this place for some time now and finerly found it as me and my boyfriend viseted here last year and nethe one of us bothered to look at the name of the place but we were looking for a nice place to grab a tea and a coffe i think i ended up haveing a caramel latay of sorts and as we came in we saw the lovely cakes and just had to have one we chose a orange chockolat cake and it was so good was just perfect on a rainy day staff where very welcoming and perlight i recal bring the cups and plate back to the counter and the women working at the time apolergised and i said no need as servis was grate and explained that it a bit of a habbit as my mum used to work in a cafe in my hometown and that it;s a bit of a sign of thanks if we ever viset agine would deffently pop in

Afternoon tea with Prosecco at The Gilt Rooms was something else. What a spread for my daughter and I from the moment we arrived we were spoiled. The Presecco was in a class of its own even nicer than champagne. We didnt stick with the usual tea and had a Latte and Hot chocolate with cream, along with sandwiches so fresh with scrumptious fillings, egg, cheese, ham unlike any we had tasted before. I have been to the gilt rooms before i was diagnosed with coeliac's and wondered what there would be on offer for me now i am gluten free. Rosie and her chef went out of their way to tell me would i could have and if there was nothing i fancied they would try and rustle up something. I had the ploughman's with gluten free bread. My daughter had th potatoe and leak soup which i tasted and that was also gluten free. It was terrific. They even had gluten free cake on offer. The chef who is gluten free gave me a few tips on the different types of food i could try at home. The experience was great. Would definetly go again.

Had an afternoon tea here with friends. Such a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and amazing food with bottomless tea or coffee & a very generous glass of fizz. Will definitely be visiting again!

I visited again just after the New Year. We were a party of 8. We were offered the OAP menu even though it wasn't one of the designated days. The menu was a choice of two, chicken curry or fish pie, both home cooked. Both dishes came hot and were delicious. Some of the sweets, I think, were left over from the holiday but were still ok. For the price £10 for two courses with coffee (in china cups) was great value. The only down side was the room was cold meaning that some of us put our coats back on. I shall be happy to go again.

Booked in for Afternoon Tea here last Friday. Food is seriously tasty. I’ve done Afternoon Tea at The Ritz and The Goring and this was tastier than either. Highly recommend

You could never fault this lovely place!

On Friday 14th December we went to the Gilt Room with friends and had the wonderful Christmas Menu, lovely atmosphere with christmas music, decorations and crackers. The food and service was excellent, we all had a fantastic time, Rosie and Heidi looked after our every need. Great venue for family parties as the do private hire, we had the restaurant to ourselves. We highly recommend The Guilt Room and look forward to our next visit. Thanks very much Rosie and Heidi for all your hard work.

This is the second year we have had our team meal at the Gilt Rooms, West Mersea.
