The Granary Restaurant in Colchester

One of our favourite places to eat when we visit Mersea Island. The food is fantastic and the staff are always helpful and pleasant. My mother is in a wheelchair and gets very apprehensive going out but the access here is perfect and the tables are really spacious.

Over priced bland food. I don't know why everyone raves about a £16 roast. I could cook a better one for a family of 5 for that price. Had fish and chips today and the tartar sauce was that rank stuff out of a packet, not even home made. Too many kids running around and people with their phones constantly pinging.

A real gem. Nice traditional food, good value for money and lovely staff. I wish there were a place like that in London……

Quite possibly the best food I've eaten in long time! Reasonably priced, great service too! The chef here has a real gift!

This restaurant is absolutely amazing like a 5 star restaurant. Food best I've tasted and people are so nice and friendly. Wish I came here more during my stay. Highly recommend is a must to eat there !!!

Sunday roast was good- being honest- it tasted better that it looked from first impressions, we came to West Mersea for the afternoon.

We often use the Granary Restaurant at Waldergraves as the quality of the food is of high quality. They also have a good range of choices on their menu. The restaurant is well laid out and suitable for wheelchair users. It has a good size disabled loo, which is easy access. They have a reasonable amount of staff which are attentive. Although they offer fresh salad options, my only request would be to add fresh vegetables to the menu. Overall they do a fantastic job and I always enjoy visiting!

I had the most delicious cottage pie with cabbage and beans. It was one of the specials on the board. I have to say it was the best cottage pie I've eaten. Would definitely recommend 👌

We like the granary we go there quite often the food is always reasonably good. The only problem I have is my favourite beer is only sold in the clubhouse over the road so I have to go over there and carry it back to the restaurant

Just spent a family evening celebrating my mums 90th birthday. The food was excellent, great value and portion sizes and welcoming friendly staff, will defo return when in the area again.

(Big Breakfast) Piping hot. Perfectly cooked. Great service. Great price. Couldn't finish it all. Felt ashamed. 🤣

Had a family dinner here on a Saturday night. Service was great, food was good, the setting is lovely. I had the fish basket which was nice but would have preferred fewer chips, one less fish item (which I had to take away with me) and perhaps some salad or peas.

We visited this place after recommendation and we were not disappointed. First visit was breakfast which was amazing and second visit for a roast dinner. Breakfast was very reasonably priced and you got an amazing meal. The roast dinner was off the charts. You can have small, medium or large and again so reasonable on their pricing compared to other places. I had a large roast and it was fantastic! Can’t believe haven’t been here before or heard about it. It’s located on a holiday park so maybe that’s why it’s not that well known. The place itself is lovely and welcoming and the staff are friendly. Can’t recommend highly enough. Will be back for sure.

Just visited today for the first time on recommendation. Excellent all round, faultless! Atmosphere is lovely, warm and welcoming, staff were excellent and friendly. Breakfast was second to none and price was very good for the quality and quantity. The roast dinner is on another level! Highly recommended. Can’t believe we haven’t found this place before. We will be back very soon.

Fantastic service food amazing knocks the food out the ball park to most restaurants I have eaten in colchester and surrounding areas can't fault the food all home made non of this fast frozen food warmed up amazing atmosphere nothing to much trouble for the waiters kind professional . Prices very reasonable and portions very generous and food piping hot when served to you. This is definitely a place you should visit without any doubt very highly recommended. Kathleen George

We have just had a family Sunday lunch for eleven people at the Granary. The impression is of a very well managed restaurant. The service was excellent, with friendly, efficient and helpful staff, and food came promptly. Huge brownie points for offering the Sunday roast in three size portions, small, medium and large, we wish more restaurants did this. Other menu choices did not have this option and mostly were just too big, and that wasn't just our appetites, other people have said the same. Shame there is no roast chicken for the non red meat eaters, however, I had the chicken curry and it was absolutely delicious. A good cocktail and drinks menu and a very reasonable bill at the end. So overall a very good experience with everyone keen to go again.

Lovely food , especially Sunday roast it’s just like you would cook at home, sometimes the veg can be a bit hard, Breakfast is amazing too, friendly staff, Lovely and clean, and nice modern decor, Evening meals are a must too,, I would definitely recommend the Granary 5 stars

During our stay at Waldegraves we had a breakfast and an evening meal in the Granary.... quality and portion size was good and we had excellent service, the team there are really friendly.

Great food great service cany really say no wasn't staying there but food worth a visit well only one down side but had the pie which was great buy the mash did let it down not homemade shame that's the only down side

What excellent service. The chef came to answer questions about the dish, and the service was extremely courteous and friendly. Wow!!!! This is how we imagine hospitality! And the food - very tasteful and great. Great value for money - actually too cheap!

What an awful meal Ordered our food two starters it came out 20 mins later it was not worth £8 per starter then our food come out another 25 mins later they got the order wrong Started eating there was no taste whatsoever so bland,then I found a little black hair in my food that was it I didn’t complain but i would never go there again If you are going to mersea got to the victory or get a takeaway much better food.

Love the refit. This was always a good place to go for a meal but now the decor matches the great food and friendly staff. The colour coordination, the links to the local area is brilliant. Well done.

Food was general pub style food. Very tasty though, and portion sizes were fairly big. Good value for the prices I thought. Decor bit random but just my opinion.

Very disappointed we booked for table of 10 for 16th birthday when we arrived had 2 tables separated from each other were told they could not move the tables so had to sit separately which ruined the whole experience

Nice friendly staff, only had a bacon sandwich and a cuppa but it was nice, price was good.

We've been here many times in the past and enjoyed well cooked food in a pleasant atmosphere. However our visit on Sunday was different. There appeared a complete change of staff who were very friendly and helpful but the food was still plentiful but the quality was not as good. The roast seemed to be burnt in places. My wife and I had lasagne and chips. The lasagne was sub standard and the chips under cooked. My prawn cocktail was just salad with prawns on thrown in a bowl. Yuk Wont be returning

Visited recently while staying at waldegraves. The staff were lovely. Really helpful and friendly. The food is great. Just your basic pub grub, but the portion sizes are huge, and the prices are competitive. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

We stayed on the site for just a week end .We had dinner plus breakfast the next day at the Granary and the food was superb! , good value and cooked great .The staff were friendly , helpfull and welcoming. Really can't think of anything bad to say about the whole experience , will be back . Thank you guys ....👍

A great restaurant, very handy for the campsite. We had lunch here and the staff were super friendly. The food was nice and reasonably priced too. They do get busy in the evening and booking is advisable.

Staff very rude , booked a table with huffs and puffs ? Seemed like we were an inconvenience, changed our mind and went off site ?

Staff were very friendly & welcoming, However, the tables felt sticky and like they needed a good clean. Food wasn’t anything special, chips were cheap and frozen, my child’s pizza come out burnt. I ended up poorly with food poisoning from the food I ate here!!! Will never go here again. The best bit about this was the bottled Coke Zero 👍🏻

Tried to book on several occasions but fully booked which i think was more due to staff shortage, but when we did get a table both food and service was great, so will be going back soon. So worth booking in advance. Portion size hugh, especially fish and chips ✔️

Evening meal was very pleasant, only drawback and having to book which we hadn't expected so had an hours wait for a table. Breakfast was excellent value for money.

Fish and chips was ok had better

The past few weeks I've been attending breakfast at The Granary trying two different meals, they were divine much better than my visits months prior. The only noticeable flaw was the lack of staff.

Lovely place. Had a roast beef dinner which comes in three sizes!! Staff very friendly and helpful. The service was 10/10. Will definitely be back.

I will not say, "The food is great" because to other people they may think the food is terrible. But, what I will say is,.... Sue an I have not had a bad meal at The Granary in all the years we have frequented the establisment, which is around about the last 10 years.

My Nan has been pestering me to come here for years and it did not disappoint!! great value for money , very generous on there portions, and the churros are to die for , will definitely be returning , and such a shame it’s a little far out as I’d be here daily lol

Visited for Sunday Roast, great service, didn't have to wait long to be served or for food to come out. I ordered my toddlers meal when we arrived and that came out nice and quickly so be wasn't waiting around. Huge portions, great value for money. Food well presented and very tasty

I visited with my boyfriend, Nan and family friend today. My boyfriend was diagnosed a few months ago with Coeliac disease.. we struggle all the time to find lovely places to eat without making my boyfriend feel excluded.. I was so impressed with their gluten free menu, so many choices. My boyfriend went for the fish and chips as he hasn’t been able to have it since his diagnosis, he was so happy & said it tasted absolutely amazing!!! Everything we ate was yummy but wanted to highlight how brilliant their GF is as it’s so hard to find that!!!

Use to come here every day for dinner and sometime lunch to when we were on holiday but this year only used a couple of times as the menu is very limited compared to other years also the food was not as great as it use to be such a shame as use to love eating here.

Never had anything like it service was slow but food was really good value for money maybe the girls could have been a bit smarter instead of looking like they just come from the gym but very good food

Really pleased we finally booked and had a meal here. Friendly staff, delicious food and plenty of it. A good choice and very well priced. The wine choice was good too. Will definitely go again. We had the normal sized Sunday roast. Very good roast potatoes, cauli cheese, cabbage, parsnips, carrots, Yorkshire, loads of meat and good gravy.

We called in here after a walkabout, It was lovely,staff were welcoming,food was excellent and filling.would definitely return when on holiday again

I used to come here about once a month for take away fish & chips or Sunday lunch or breakfast. The food was always tasty & home cooked. Unfortunately the standard has dropped in the past year-sorry Granary. I have had fish & chips 3 times in the past 6 months & each time it has been swimming in grease. I had a Sunday lunch last week which was very mediocre. The lamb was tasteless, the vegetables over cooked & the roast potatoes were hard. What a shame

Very middle of the road, perfectly reasonable but not amazing. Burger and chips was average and onion rings came out of a bag. Service was polite but nothing more.
