We arrived at Bishops Castle on a Wednesday, the first day of our walking/hiking holiday. Not many things were open on Wednesday between lunch and dinner, but The Six Bells was open and the perfect place for an afternoon beer or cider with lots of outdoor seating. The weather was beautiful and it was a lovely way to enjoy the outdoors with a drink.

I loved the fact there was live music. I know some don’t like this but sadly it is only on to about 8 o clock. It is annoying when I see complaints about the music as if you move by a pub you should know what to expect. This pub is great and if they lost live music because of small minded people it would be a travesty

This establishment plays music too loudly in a residential area, affecting the mental and physical health of the residents who are neighbours. The manager has been spoken to about this, but does not care. Making money is not more important than the residents’ legal right to a quiet and peaceful environment in their own home.

We did like this pub and they stock very good beers, but they seemed to shut quite early or not be open even though they were supposed to be, so you never knew when you could go. We intended to eat one evening but found they were shut (at 8PM!). We did eat there one lunchtime and it was very nice/

We love this pub it's a nice place to visit, proper good local pub. Only lager on tap is Carlsberg or Carlsberg export so be aware. Nice ales on though. Really disappointed with the burger and fries though. The burger I found was bland and tasteless. Served with fries and cheese sauce which was OK. For £12.50 it may of just been a bad choice as my partner had the sea bass which she said was tasty. Worth another try having something different. We did find it overpriced though

Booked the curry night a fortnight in advance, acceding to their request to arrive at 7.15 rather than 7. Upon arrival were informed that they no longer do food and that the person who took the booking shouldn't have done so, despite it being advertised on their website and the request for us to arrive at a different time to the one we suggested. Smirking behaviour of the barmaid didn't help. I assume it's changed hands since previous reviews. Shame - let's hope decent management take it over before another lovely old pub disappears.

The food from the next door cafe is also great, particularly the salad with sandwiches and incredibly reasonable. I loved this pub. Its how they should be. People who criticise this pub don't understand what they should be and that is about the beer and the people. The Six Bells has both these in spades. The beer is very tasty and there should be a strength and style to suit most pallets. The people are very friendly and the size and layout of the bar assists complete strangers to get to know each other - surely that is one of the main points of a pub. Go its brilliant !

A lovely little pub that I have visited quite a few times over the years. It's a warm cheerful spot with a nice blend of folks. First a major plus - the food here has massively improved since I last visited: My chicken a mushroom pie was delicious and my wife's fish a chips superb. Well done. The bar-tenders were a couple of very pleasant Polish girls: attentive and fast. Now for the tiny gripes: On the last couple of visits we have been served by a girl called Abbie - a nicer bartender you couldn't wish to meet. A delightfully humorous girl who always remembered our names and our preferred drinks. Sadly I heard she had been 'let go' - a shame. Other tiny gripe - The best beer they produce is the ZEN. However, it is not always on. It should be. A great pint and that slight bit different than their other admittedly excellent brews.

Fantastic pub, one of my favourites in the UK. The Six Bells has a great and totally unique atmosphere - quirky like Bishops Castle but also friendly and very welcoming. The choice and quality of the beers is excellent. They don't do much in terms of food. A few sandwich options. Whilst this might be a negative I don't see it this way. The Six Bells doesn't claim to serve gourmet food and not doing this means it can concentrate on what it excels in - brewing (in its micro brewery) and serving beer in a great place. Would definitely recommend.

We always try to visit the Six Bells at least once a year. When Big Nev sold up 2-3 years ago we worried that someone might come in and change the character of the pub. Fortunately the new owners have kept up the good work and the pub is still one the best you will visit. The bar is just what a proper pub should be. Cosy and unprententious and above all, full of friendly folk. We have never come into this pub and not struck up a conversation with someone. The landlord is very friendly too :-)Now to the main event, the beer! All of the beer is brewed just yards away in the adjacent brewey. Spikey Blonde was my wifes' prefered choice and it was very good but my favourite was Sutra. I think this might be one of their seasonal brews though as some the beers change throughout the year.We didn't eat on this visit, so I can't comment on the food but I hear it is good. Trip Advisor seems focused on hotels or restuarants rather than pubs but my review is based on this being a first class boozer! If like me you like good beer then you can't go wrong here. The traditional and unspoilt bar along with the local friendly faces might be seen as a bonus but it makes this place special. My tip would be to start your BC beer drinking adventure here and make your way up the hill drinking in various pubs as you go and end up in the Three Tuns or Castle Hotel bar.

We were in Shropshire escaping the 'Christmas Experience' in our home city of Bath, Somerset. We wanted peace & quiet, nothing commercial, minimal frill and fuss and did we ever pick the perfect spot here. This is a pub from another age and is the tap for the Six Bells Brewery on site - and on a site stinking of history (as is most of the village) As a pub it goes back to the mid 1700's and is now a Grade II listed building of the traditional two room layout, with a public bar and lounge - the lounge doubling as a dining area, tastefully decorated in cottage style. The name is taken from the nearby church of St John the Baptist (also worth a visit) whose tower does indeed host 6 bells.Formerly a coaching inn, the Six Bells serviced coaches and horses travelling the Kerry Ridge-way, the ancient main route from London to mid Wales. The bar is very traditional, with its low beams, copper-work and exposed stone walls. There is no jukebox, piped musak or fruit machines here, but instead settles, arranged so people can actually talk to each other (quite a novel innovation) The landlord was affable and garrulous and explained some interesting aspects about the history of the establishment and brewery. Recommending The Spikey Blonde (abv 4%) was a good choice of tipple – especially as I had one with me. Deservedly winning area Pub of the Year in 2015, and currently in the 2017 Good Beer Guide, the beers are excellent.

The food was of a good pub standard, veg was over done a bit for my own liking, but there was a lot of older people in that day,, so maybe they were catering for the toothless more so, the beef was fair,, by no means the worst i have had, and over all we all came out feeling full and happy. We dropped into the Six Bells one quiet Tuesday lunchtime, having enjoyed a long romp with three dogs in the nearby fields. We were warmly welcomed by Sue who presides over the bar. Two charming young ladies came and offered the dogs treats from their hands, which went down well with my two who aren't always the best behaved. This was their first ever visit to a pub so it was great for it to be associated with a pleasant experience for them. My friend had a bowl of delicious, spicy carrot soup (which I ate most of) followed by equally delicious baguettes with prawns and salad. Washed down with two or three glasses of their own brewed Spiky Blond beer, it was a treat. I could not resist a slice of Sue's home made cake, it was a big slab of Victoria sponge and exactly as Victoria sponge should be. Served with a big pot of Earl Grey, what could be nicer? The traditional interior and welcoming homely atmosphere make this a delightful venue and I hope to visit frequently in the future, ideally when my dog has learned to be less barky with the other canine denizens.

We visited the Six Bells on the Bishops Castle Real Ale Trail which is held every July and not to be missed if you love real ale. Bishops Castle has six pubs and 2016 was the 20th Real Ale Trail, its fantastic. The pub has its own brewery, one of two in this small town and there are a good range of home grown beers to be had but during the real ale trail there is massive choice of guest beers brought in from all over the country. When we visited on Real Ale Trail Saturday the courtyard was packed with revellers enjoying the beers and local bands, a traction engine entertained with rides for the very brave. The pub itself is at the bottom of the town and is quite small with two old fashioned rooms and is usually occupied with regulars and walkers who use the town as a base for hiking the Shropshire hills. Visit during the real ale trail weekend however and you will be having fun with hundreds of like minded souls in town for a tour of the six pubs which often begins or ends at the Six Bells.Definitely recommended at any time but especially during Real Ale Trail weekend.

Popped in mid-week afternoon to try the beers- not disappointed! 6 on draft, all brewed on the site and a range from pale to porter. Bar maid was very welcoming and we got chatting to a couple of locals. Didn't eat so can't comment. Would definitely recommend if you are on the beer trail. Much quieter than some of the pub's in Bishops Castle.

We came in on spec to find out whether they could fit us in on a Saturday night, and were surprised to find the dining room completely empty, particularly as we'd seen several reserved tables when we'd dropped in for a drink the previous night. Then we found out that the pub has recently changed hands and the new chef is in the middle of revamping the menu. We were given menus, which turned out to bear little relationship to what was actually available. There was no vegetarian dish listed, although the website had said they offered vegetarian options, so we queried this, and after checking with the chef, the barperson told us there were four options available: two kinds of curry, veggie sausages, or veggie lasagne, though on further enquiry it turned out they'd run out of veggie lasagne. My partner chose veggie sausages, I chose the smoked mackerel starter from the menu so I could have room left for the home-made crumble, then it turned out they'd run out of smoked mackerel too. But yes, they would do me some prawns with bread and salad instead, and the chef came out to ask how I would like them cooked – I accepted his offer of chilli/garlic/ginger with lemon and parsley, which was very nice though I think another time I'd ask him to hold the ginger as it muddied the flavour a little. The bar was busy with locals, the real ale from their micro-brewery was excellent, the wine average, and the pub cat endearing. The food was also excellent. My partner so enjoyed his veggie sausages, with mash and veg and a tasty buttery mustard sauce, that he argued I should give five stars for this review. But I'm writing it, not him, and in my judgement it wasn't a five-star experience, though it definitely has five-star potential, and I expect it will realise that potential soon. I loved my prawns, which were served in their spicy dressing with thick-sliced white toast, butter on the side, and a tasty side salad with sliced cucumber, very thinly sliced carrot, halved cherry tomatoes, and good quality mixed leaves including radicchio (and no red onion, hurrah!) in a light balsamic dressing. There were two options for home-made crumble, apple and rhubarb or apple and whinberry, I'd never met the latter so enquired and discovered they are a kind of wild blueberry which are locally foraged from the Long Mynd, so I had to try that, and I was glad I did. They're sourer and more tangy than the cultivated blueberry, and there were lots of them in the crumble, giving a pleasing dark purple sauce which contrasted well with the custard, and a great flavour. The crumble topping was standard flour/butter/sugar, the portion generous, and I enjoyed it very much. They source as many of their ingredients locally as they can. This is never going to be a slick place with highly trained front-of-house staff, but if you're after really good food in a friendly atmosphere, you'll find it here.

Good range of beer and a nice menu of homemade pub grub. Good roast dinner at weekends. Food service can be a bit slow, but quality is good. Staff are cheerful and friendly.

Cracking little pub in the market town of Bishops Castle. Totally unpretentious and a warm welcome assured. Fantastic selection of real ales, all brewed on the premises, together with very good and reasonably priced food. If you are impressed by plush decor and furnishings this won't be the place for you, if, on the other hand, you appreciate a real old fashioned friendly pub you will love it here.

Go out of your way to visit this traditional inn! A wide range of fabulous ales on offer, friendly staff, old building with lots of character and live music on a Thursday.....can't remember the band names but they were talented and popular judging by the number of people there. The bands play outside on a stage area of sorts behind the inn. A memorable evening was had.

Great pub with its own brewery attached. Statndards are every bit as good here after the recent change in ownership. Beer still first class.

Lovely friendly traditional pub which produces its own beer and also offers a range of traditional country wines. Lovely wood burner in the winter.

Great little pub with some very entertaining locals. Good ales from its own microbrewery. Dog friendly. Rated it 'very good' but the meals could be better.

Eugh, why can’t places just do basic things well?! The atmosphere and decor is absolutely spot on, got our drinks quickly, all fine, but then the sunder dinners arrived and although they looked beautiful it was the driest thing I’ve had in a long time. The beef was chewy and inedible, and I could’ve choked on the turkey it was bone dry. Roast potatoes were ok but not crispy at all. The veg was so weird, orange cheese on the cauliflower but it didn’t say on the menu anything about cheese so my husband couldn’t eat the veg as he doesn’t like cheese. Weird red tomato sauce on the sugar snaps and red cabbage. I would’ve expected carrots, broccoli maybe peas. Not enough gravy. My son had a burger which he couldn’t eat as it was soggy. He said the texture was like tuna. Vile. My niece had a kids chicken burger which she really didn’t like either. We didn’t complain as it was my dad’s birthday and we didn’t want to spoil the vibe. I also don’t think they gave us the meal deal price for a Sunday despite having 4 roasts and 3 desserts.
