We came for a birthday dinner for my husband but sadly we were both underwhelmed by the food. The snacks to start were delicious but not all dishes that followed were as successful. Some of the flavours of the dishes were a little jarring but two of the dishes were actually difficult to eat. My Cornish bluefin tuna, rather than being melt in the mouth, was tough to cut through and the white tendon was still in place which wasn’t chewable so I had to spit it out. It was also served with small discs of radish which were raw, so the whole dish was off, even though the ponzu dressing was tasty. Ordinarily this would have been my favourite. The main course was squab pigeon but was served with the wing, including foot and claws, so was a bit too much reality for me and made us feel sad about the food rather than joyful. The waitress weirdly made a point of highlighting which bit was the heart as ‘she’d like to know what she was eating,’ so I don’t even think she was on board with this dish. To be fair to the restaurant we were given the chance to review the menu when having pre dinner drinks and we were asked if we had any comments. I can’t recall however whether this detail was in there. The wine flight however was really good with some really interesting selections such as the dessert wine with rose water. The sommelier at least had a bit of personality. Overall due to us not enjoying a couple of dishes and not bowled over by the rest, we came away feeling disappointed and not value for money. Sadly the foot is all I can think about!!

Unfortunately not recommendable for vegans. I was excited to choose from the vegan menu and picked the Jersey Royal fricassee. What I received were a few potatoes with green peas and green leaves, no sauce, barely a trace of seasoning. For £21, I can imagine that his dish has a great profit margin. I was hoping my partner would be more satisfied with his steak in pepper sauce (£27), but he was disappointed too. The service was great and the interior looked very nice, I just wish the food matched those standards. I would recommend visiting a place with more vegan cooking experience.

It’s very difficult to understand anybody finding The Arkle Tasting Menu a disappointment. We used some vouchers we had been given some time ago to enjoy an evening in this excellent restaurant. The food was outstanding and together with the Wine Flight, which was a great match for all the different courses, we had a very enjoyable evening. All the staff were a credit to the hotel, they were patient, cheerful and happy to help. The whole experience is a very special treat, no it’s not the price of a meal out with friends in the pub or a trip to a chain restaurant, but you know that when you book. It isn’t something you’d probably do every week either, but as a chance to be treated to something delicious, that’s been produced beautifully into a meal you’d be very unlikely to replicate yourself, even if you’re a good home cook, if ever you get the chance to go to The Arkle, you should take up the opportunity. Thank you to those in the kitchen as well as the front of house, you are a great team. We hope you enjoy working at The Grosvenor and continue to offer such exceptional quality for many more years to come.

We go to La Brasserie at the Chester Grosvenor quite a lot because their food is just supurb and along with their Silver Service and attention to detail you couldn't want for a more convivial place to eat. No wonder there are always queues to get in if you haven't pre-booked. It isn't expensive either. Just having "afternoon tea" is such a treat, not to be missed :-)

Continental is included in all stays at the hotel - we decided to eat elsewhere for most of our trip but ate here on our last morning. You have to book your slot with reception the day before. It is table service so no help yourself buffet. The service is really great across the hotel & everyone is very attentive. My partner had the porridge which he found was quite watery. I had the fruit salad & yoghurt and we shared the selection of pastries which was lovely! The coffee was good, much better than the machine coffee you get at some hotels.

Ate here last week to celebrate 2 big birthdays with friends. Excellent 7 course tasting menu and my friends enjoyed the wine flight. The young staff were excellent especially the sommelier. I thought it was good value for money given that I've paid much more for Michelin starred dining, and this was close. As we were specifically asked if we were celebrating something and said 2 big birthdays, I did think that my friends might have been offered a glass of something or some other extra - I've had this in similar level restaurants. Bill for 4 including 3 wine flights and aperitifs was £850 Highly recommended.

I was probably underdressed in my track suit, but they do allow casual dress in the daytime. It’s comfortable in my wheelchair. Access from the car park is maze like with ramps and lifts and long corridors. Sandwiches are twee, but very nice. Scones are tiny, but light. You can request sandwiches top up but not the scones. Champagne good. Teapot allowed my second cuppa to go cold. I had to go use the facilities. The accessible WC is tiny and hard to enter as the door doesn’t fully open.

This is not just fine dining this is an exquisite dining experience. From entering the Arkle you are simply immersed in a sophisticated environment which is complimented by superb staff and food. Canapés, served in the lounge bar area, are a prelude to a tasting menu which reflects the brilliance and passion of the executive chef, Elliot Hill, who ought, in our opinion, be awarded a Michelin Star. Our wines were selected by Boris, the Sommelier, whose knowledge is second to none. The high altitude Argentinian Malbec was outstanding as was the Chilean Sauvignon. The “floor” is managed by Piotr who orchestrates superb service which is attentive without being intrusive. It’s undoubtedly formal dining, the best in the region.

It’s clear Arkle are aiming for a Michelin star and there were some excellent dishes such as the brill and roast almond mousse of Michelin standard. The bread selection was amazing although showing loaves on the trolley table side as was done previously would be more theatrical. The wine list of just 5 red and whites was disappointing. There were some service errors - forgot a glass of red wine (although put on the house), dropped the pre dessert and served shellfish to my wife who had an allergy meaning I had to eat the fish course alone whilst it was recooked. The price point is very high given no star. The canapés were bland and lacked any punch. The mushroom custard dish was unusual and we both left parts of it. Overall a nice dining experience but still falls short of a Michelin standard and at that price point I would not return.

The food here is in one word stunning! I have dined in a number of Michelin starred restaurants and Arkle is right up there. It feels cosy and intimate, and the staff make you feel very special. Considering the sheer quality of the food it is also very reasonable re the bill. You start the evening in what I would describe as a cosy bar and then move to the restaurant seating which is limited and exquisitely decorated. Two menus options re courses and we went for the smaller one, the dishes seems petite but by the time you have finished all you feel very happy and full. The attention to detail and presentation is sublime, each dish is a work of culinary art and the complexity of tastes are incredible. Great staff can transform a restaurant and everyone we met here was passionate about the restaurant and food. They were also really well trained, attentive, but not overbearing and always ready to assist. It was my partners birthday and they married the occasion and very kindly all signed a card with the menu for a lovely memory. Probably one of the nicest places I have visited and we will definately be back!

We visited Arkle as part of a 2 night stay at the Grosvenor for our anniversary & it was a fabulous experience from start to finish. They have a separate bar area, which, like the actual restaurant , was spacious and relaxing and very comfy. We started with a complimentary glass of Tattinger while looking at our menu & enjoying some delicious canapés. We were taken into the restaurant for our tasting menu, and also opted to have the wine flight. Everything was beautifully made and tasted wonderful. I had a pescatarian version & my favourite dish was the graffiti aubergine, which was beautifully presented and tasted wonderful. Hubby’s favourite was also his main, dry aged sirloin. Barry’s bread & cultured butter is also worth a mention but we had to resist eating too much of it, which was hard as it was so delicious. All the staff were friendly & knowledgable & our wine flight was a great accompaniment with some unexpected surprises, well presented by Boris. It was a delightful evening from start to finish, nicely rounded off by a couple more drinks in the bar.

Sadly this was one of the worst restaurant experiences I have had in many a year. What should have been a lovely anniversary meal for 4 was a disaster. I can only assume it was a staff training day but the manager did her best to rectify the admitted mistakes. We had to ask multiple times for the wine list and water for the table( which was plonked unceremoniously and unopened) Our starter orders were fine and tasty, the mains were another matter altogether. Steaks were cooked incorrectly with wrong sides, the halibut when it arrived was cold and tiny. It did not arrive back in time to eat before we had finished our mains(we took as long as we could ) It may sound like I'm being fussy but believe me that's not the case. Completely prepared to put it down as a one off but I always like to give an honest review. Again I have to praise the manager who did her very best to redeem the situation and am hoping for much better on our next visit.

This was the first time visiting the Arkle restaurant since Simon Radley had left. On arrival we were given the drinks menu & were quite disappointed that there were only 4 cocktails listed. Maybe we could have asked for a different cocktail but I found the server to be quite abrupt so felt awkward asking. My husband had a Wirral gin (just tasted of ginger) & I had a spicy Margarita. The Margarita was quite spicy, it came in a tumbler (not the usual Martini shaped glass) with the most enormous block of ice but with no salt or even a slither of lime. Very disappointing. The canapes served were extremely delicious. Considering the dining room had been revamped, it didn't look much different from before, but the chandelier is beautiful. The chairs were not as comfortable as they were previously. Service: Quite slow & disjointed at times. The sommelier kept disappearing & not topping our glasses regularly. When our mineral water was finished, he automatically replaced it without asking if we wanted another bottle! As another reviewer pointed out, the staff don't interact with the diners & seem quite stiff. The only personable person was the young guy who offered the bread & was very pleasant but even he needs a bit more guidance & training on which side of the table to lay cutlery. Food: Out of the seven courses, I only can rate 5 as being absolutely delicious. The main course was a choice of either Sirloin steak or duck. Firstly, I thought using a Sirloin cut was not a good idea, should have been fillet at least. When it arrived, the steak was the size & thickness of a biscuit & I had to leave some of it because of a grisly piece running through it which is not good considering the size of it to start with! My husband found the duck to be quite chewy too. The waiter whisked our plates away without asking me if there was a problem with the steak. The dessert course was definitely not to my taste. The meadowsweet herb used in the clotted cream completely overpowered the whole dish with a horrible antiseptic taste. At the end of the meal we were asked if everything had been ok. I did complain about the steak & was told the chef would be informed. A bit late in my opinion. On the whole I can see why they have not regained the Michelin star. The majority of Michelin chefs take pride in using locally sourced ingredients. This menu came from Orkney, Salisbury, Cornwall, West Country, Herefordshire & Lancashire! The wine list is poor too, a choice of four White & five Red. Sadly, for £365 to be disappointed we will not be returning.

The food here really is beautiful - as soon as the canapes are put down you know you are in for something special. Too many wonderful things to mention them all but the duck with miso aubergine and chicory was probably the biggest surprise for me - it was probably the course I was least looking forward to but I actually started laughing at how good it was. The staff were lovely and attentive without being overbearing. I really liked how despite this being fine dining it didn't feel stuffy or full of self-regard, you genuinely felt everyone wanted you to enjoy the evening. It's expensive, but it's the first time I've had a tasting menu and felt properly full afterwards so it felt like good value to me, particularly when you think of how much work must go into making food like this and serving eight courses seamlessly on a busy night. Overall I can't remember having a better meal or being more impressed with a restaurant.

Brought the experience to life as every dish was bursting with flavour . Staff within the Arkle are very professional and quietly float delivering each dish with aplomb on those wonderful silver serving platters . This is the best fine dining restaurant we have found to date in the North West. The dishes were divine, the service attentive, and the ambience all that one would expect from such a top venue. We were treated to a 7-course tasting menu with accompanying wine flight selected by Boris, their sommelier. The restaurant should really have a couple of Michelin stars, but their existing one departed with the last chef recently, and their new chef is aiming to replace it asap! I suggest you book quickly before that happens... Cost was in line with such a meal, around £500 for two including tip. Our overnight bed and continental breakfast was another £125 on top.

I had lunch with my friends on a weekday. The 12% tip will be included, so we were looking forward to receiving the great customer service, but there was none. We arrived at the restaurant on time of the reservation but no one took us to a table. It was not busy at all, and we had eye contact with some waiters and waitress, but they just ignored us, so we stood there for over 5 minutes. Other customers were served fine, so we felt racism. (We are Asian) After we got the table, we asked a few questions about some wine, but the waitress had no knowledge of it and couldn't answer anything. We were surprised to see the cheap quality water bottle which we can buy it from Wilko in the fine restaurant. We hoped that at least the food would be amazing, but the main plaice dish was very sweet. Even more sweet than the egg tart, which had no flavour at all. The champagne, the starter, and the coffee were nice. The restaurant is beautiful, so it was so shame that service and food weren't. I can't recommend this restaurant to my Asian friends because I don't want them to experience discrimination.

Was rather disappointed on our recent visit. The quality of the steak was not good and had a lot of inedible sinews in it. The service was also not up to the standard you would expect of such an illustrious hotel. Ordered a glass of red wine to accompany my main course which never arrived, yet they didn't hesitate to try and charge me for it along with a presumptuous service charge that I politely requested to be removed.

We booked for our anniversary and this time stayed at the hotel too, just as well as the mean took over three hours, but it was worth every minute. We started in the bar and chose our wine, an excellent Barossa valley which was decanted...

Disappointing experience. The service was non existent and staff were no where to be seen. It took over 20 mins to take our order and quite a while for drinks to be served. We were waiting so long for someone to come by the table to ask for the bill, we ended up having to walk around the restaurant to find one of the non-existent staff. Once the bill arrived, we again waited 15-20 mins for staff to come to collect payment with a card machine. We eventually gave up and paid on the way out, making sure to remove the 12.5% service charge from the total out of principle as I felt totally ignored. This is a place that charges £15-17 for a glass of Prosecco and £9.50 for a standard glass of wine in what is supposed to be the top hotel in Chester. I would get consistently better service in a Wetherspoons. The prices and service are totally mismatched and I wouldn’t care to return.

This place was somewhere we always wanted to stay at. Been a few times in the past, but this was a treat for both of us. Had breakfast and snacks previously but we ate our dinner here. Excellent cuisine, perfectly cooked and presented. Friendly staff and very knowledgeable about all the dishes.

Rude waiter, rude manager. What a disappointing experience, waited over an hour for mains, staff seemed embarrassed when asked what the delay was but didn't give any indication of the issue , our curries were brought to the table with the advice that the rice was just heating in the microwave, curries weren't very hot, feedback about our experience was not welcomed in any way, talked over and down to and dismissed with such rudeness, to watch the waiter and manager rant about our feedback loudly in front of other diners was appalling, a large volume of takeaway orders left the restaurant whilst we were there but apparently over an hours wait is standard, the food although luke warm was the best part of a very disappointing experience 🙄

We went here as we had Tesco vouchers which I think a lot of people had and this may explain the prices for the food you get. You had to pick off the a la carte menu, I had Beef Bourguignon for £18.35 which contained two pieces of beef and a large amount of beefy mushrooms on a bed of mash. It looked very meaty but only two pieces. The King Prawn starter was nice at nearly ten pounds. There was quite a wait to be served as there seemed to be a changeover from the breakfast to the lunch sitting and someone from the kitchen staff ended up running out with the starters. If I did not have the Tesco vouchers I would not have been very happy at the prices charged, but the restraunt is still getting those full prices for the vouchers used I presume. The thing is you would never visit again based on the price for the mushroom Bourguignon and also the Cesar salad which was about £14 and you had to pay extra for chicken.
