Mediocre food. I’ve had chicken chasseur and my sister got sea bass. Chicken sauce tasted off (sour) and sea bass was too salty. Vegetable plate that came for the table had uncooked broccoli. Desserts were so so too. The texture of my Baileys cheesecake wasn’t right, it was like a gummy bear. Overall, it was below average experience. Staff added service charge to the bill without asking (this is not ok, especially when they can’t get basics right i.e food). I don’t recommend this place. I don’t know where all those 5-star reviews are coming from.

I came to Chez Jules with a group for a Christmas lunch. We had two large tables. The food is very good. I had vegetable and lentil soup, turkey with stuffing, and chocolate torte for dessert. It was so noisy you could hardly hear yourself speak. This restaurant is very busy. We took a long time to be seated and the food took a long time to be served. This restaurant could do with improvement.

We had a rather disappointing and unpleasant experience here and I really cannot recommend a visit while Chester has so many nice and charming restaurants to choose from. We'd booked a late Friday afternoon table here to take advantage of the festive menu, but upon seating told the festive menu didn't start until the Monday; this was never advertised on the website at the time I'd booked. No bother, we went for the day menu. Chez Jules boasts everything is cooked fresh and to order, but when I asked if I could have the Tartiflette without bacon, I was told it was all batch cooked and this couldn't be done. There were no vegetarian starters besides a salad, so I asked if I could have the French Onion soup, which was still cheaper than most of the Day Menu starters. I was told I could, but would have a £2 surcharge (a figure plucked out of thin air), which felt a bit of a kick. The starters were pleasant, although nothing special. My wife went to the toilet immediately after the starter, but within minutes of taking our plates away the mains were served; she wasn't sat at the table. We couldn't have been seated any nearer to the kitchen, so the staff were well aware we weren't ready for the mains. When arriving, I had asked if we could sit at by the window, since the restaurant was almost empty. We were told we'd have to give a one and a half hour limit, but thinking we were in for a nice and relaxed service we decided not to be rushed. If I had known they were happy to try and rush us out I'd have taken them up on this. My wife returned to cooling food, and when we asked why the rush, we weren't given any sort of sensible answer. The mains were again fine, albeit nothing remarkable, and a bit small on the mains and dauphinoise and padded out with vegetables, when we were looking forward to the former. We didn't bother with desserts. We had been looking forward to this meal as our first meal out in months (we're new parents) but the whole experience felt disappointing and I wish we hadn't bothered. Do not go here; there are plenty of nice restaurants throughout Chester. There are some fantastic Spanish, Italian and Japanese cuisines out there, with a better ambiance, service and quality than here.

We had an excellent meal here recently. We had their Christmas menu which was very reasonably priced. I had the mussels which were super sweet and delicious. I then had the cod in lobster bisque sauce which was incredible. The only slight issue was that the cod was overcooked, but it didn't detract from a delicious dish. Highly recommended

I have eaten here just with my husband and it has always been wonderful. Was nervous about them replicating this for a large group for our Christmas family meal but everything was fabulous. The food, the service, the environment were all exceptional. 10 people ate and nothing was less than perfect. In the run up the organisation and communication were excellent. We were not rushed and after we'd paid the bill we all stayed for cocktails and the staff were just as attentive.

Great menu and value for money dishes with somewhat of a French emphasis. Table service was 5* but 0* for the guy who answered the phone on reservation who cut me off when he said there were no tables for my preferred time. We tried a walk-in at the same time and got the last table so no worries. I suspect it was the same guy / owner / head waiter who could not wait to get us away from the table to get another larger group sat down. Because of that I was unable to give the table staff an additional 10% tip.

Tuesday is perfect for value! The food was exceptional, a true treat for my taste buds. I highly recommend booking, especially on a Tuesday. For £36 per person, you get two courses and a bottle of wine, which is fantastic value. My family and I, however, opted for the three-course meal at £26.95 per person, and it was worth every penny given the outstanding quality of food and service. If you haven’t tried this place, you’re missing out! The Tartiflette, recommended by my partner, was absolutely delicious. For the main course, I would strongly suggest the pork belly with mixed vegetables—it was flawless. Everything about the meal was delightful.

Outstanding food. Every morsel was an absolute delight to my taste buds. I would recommend you book and even better do so on a Tuesday. Two courses and a bottle of wine £36 pp. However my partner, son & myself opted for the three courses which was £26.95 pp and for the quality of food & service was well worth it. If you don’t at least try this once you’ll be doing yourself a disservice…My partner recommended the Tartiflette & after trying a piece I would agree. Main I would recommend the belly of pork with mixed vegetables. Everything was a delight.

Have eaten here a few times and both times have been great. First time I came here was for dinner and I loved the selection of food they had to offer. I went with frogs for starters and then got their pork for my main and then a cheesecake for my dessert. I came back here a couple weeks later as I was going out for Sunday lunch with my family and my Nan and I got the set menu for my lunch and it tasted really good. I got the chicken patte for my starter and then I got roasted beef, Yorkshire pudding and potatoes and then I got the cheesecake again because I loved it so much last time. Called in yesterday for lunch. Never been before. Nice to see the place so full with a great "buzzy" atmosphere. Found a table by Emily who was extremely warm, welcoming and professional. My wife had the chicken part of the 2 courses for £19 deal... Exceptional value for money. I had the rack of lamb. Both were cooked to perfection as were the side vegetable dish. Portion sizes were generous. Service from Emily was excellent... She is an asset to the restaurant and gave exceptional customer service throughout the meal. All in all, lunch was a delight and we would certainly be more than happy to eat here again. Thankyou to all involved, including the chefs. Very highly recommended. It was special offer night, so very busy. 5,7,9pm slots 2 hours allowed. Service and quality of food exceptional. Only 4 star for food as frogs legs and whole plaice were literally in a bath of butter and the fish had a huge pile of capers on top. Both meats were overpowered - they're very delicately flavoured and should have been the hero on the plate. A bit disappointed, a gentler hand needed. Duck was also a little tough, not sure why Tarte au citron was delicious

When we asked for a window seat, we were told they had a better one and showed us a table next to the toilet!!!! We then got given the choice of a booth table which in the absent of a window table sufficed. All through our 3 course meal, the window table was unused. The Web site show the menu, but the restaurant showed another one, (apparently tined escargot is seasonal) according to the waitress. The food is OK and the value for money is not the best. The food was very good, so it was worth a visit once you knew what to expect.

47 years married today so my better halfs choice was here, table booked and it was pouring with rain ,got off the bus and my brolly gave up the ghost when getting off so not the best start to the evening. Glad we booked as it was extremely busy but then it normally is ,opted for the Tuesday night wine deal which consisted of two courses and two bottles of wine, both courses were of decent quality even if I have had better steaks but I have never seen so many waiting staff which considering the amount of diners there they needed but service was probably the best we,ve had and couldn't be faulted, two bottles of wine was a bit of a struggle and we ended up bringing half a bottle home with us, waste not want not as the saying goes . Garlic bread starter was very dry and unimaginative. Mains were tasty, but big variations in presentation (eg sea bass beautifully arranged, beef bourgignon just ladelled into a bowl with no attempt at garnish or presentation. Vegetables as always were great. Desserts though were the biggest let down - cheesecake, for example was simply a marsbar sized slice served on a bare plate with no attempt at any presentation or additional colour, like berries or coulis swirls, or just something to lift it up what was a very bland dessert not worth the £8 I’d paid for it.

All starters and desserts are pre-prepared slices of whatever from the fridge. The ‘terrine’ ie patè was served at fridge temperature, with some fancy leaves thrown onto it. The blond waitress - mentioned in many reviews - was a downer. Cheeky, hard faced, not thinking of the customers whatsoever. She lost her temper openly. I could go on and on, but long story short - why is she still working there? I ordered a glass of “champagne” from the paper menu that was handed to us - this one was not on the online menu. I cannot remember the same, but it was £8.99 per glass, the name started with a D. I do not believe this was real champagne. It was served, much like the beaujolais, from the back of the restaurant - no bottle opened or to be seen. The colour of this supposed champagne was slightly orange - which we mostly see with cheap acidic cavas. The bubbles were not behaving like the natural fine bubbles in champagne, that float to the top gently. These were large and aggressive, definitely bottled gas - a cremant de bourgogne or alsace possibly, or even worse, a new world fizz. The main meal was nice, lamb and the usual veg that they serve with everything - but you can get this in any pub in the country, what’s the French spin on this?! Nothing. We decided to go for a dessert and a decent fizz to Piccolino, and they saved our night from the doom and gloom of this night in Chez Jules. Chez Jules is terribly over-rated, but are these reviews genuine? The bad reviews are a more accurate reflection of this poorly run restaurant. We shall not return.

We booked out the top floor of the restaurant one Saturday afternoon for my dad's 80th lunch. We had about 45 people there and fitted in comfortably. It's a nice private space for that number. The food and the service were really good and the staff could not have been more helpful, both in the run up to event and on the day itself. My dad was thrilled with how it went and everyone we invited was very impressed. Can thoroughly recommend them.

We went here as we had Tesco vouchers which I think a lot of people had and this may explain the prices for the food you get. You had to pick off the a la carte menu, I had Beef Bourguignon for £18.35 which contained two pieces of beef and a large amount of beefy mushrooms on a bed of mash. It looked very meaty but only two pieces. The King Prawn starter was nice at nearly ten pounds. There was quite a wait to be served as there seemed to be a changeover from the breakfast to the lunch sitting and someone from the kitchen staff ended up running out with the starters. If I did not have the Tesco vouchers I would not have been very happy at the prices charged, but the restraunt is still getting those full prices for the vouchers used I presume. The thing is you would never visit again based on the price for the mushroom Bourguignon and also the Cesar salad which was about £14 and you had to pay extra for chicken.

Booked for a special anniversary. Stunning food but didn’t feel special when there were people in jeans, polo shirts and trainers. If you’re spending £292 just on food and service charge and then another £140 on drinks and coffee then I would have expected some sort of dress code. The reservation states “smart - casual attire is required” but I wouldn’t consider trainers, denim and a golf shirt to be smart/casual. Would not return for that reason.
